Bad file names?

You have added the category Category:Files of New York with bad file names to several pages, but have not (a) said why they are bad, or (b) proposed something different? — Rhododendrites ^talk |  16:50, 12 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Rhododendrites, is it really necessary to say that a file named Clock 20211113 123247.jpg (for example) deserves a more precise name? Or do you know what W 43 St Nov 2021 51.jpg should mean? Do you remember the famous line from the older movie The Odd Couple: „I cannot stand little notes on my pillow! “We are all out of cornflakes, F.U.” It took me three hours to figure out F.U. was Felix Ungar.“ That's the problem with cryptic file names! --J.-H. I was speaking more about the files I uploaded, like the one linked above. It says clearly the picture shows northern shovelers, and all of my uploads have a 5-digit number at the end which helps me to keep track/find things. If it were just "northern shovelers.jpg" would they have needed a tag? I often use filenames that provide the subject and then abbreviate the location when the location is not the subject (to avoid long filenames). In this case, "in CP" for "in Central Park" because the location isn't all that important, and is there in the description. Thoughts? — Rhododendrites ^talk |  15:57, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

What's the problem to name a file New York City Central Park Northern Shovelers, New York City Central Park Spatula clypeata or Manhattan Central Park Northern Shovelers (for example)? No cryptic abbreviations and the location can be seen clearly. And, pardon me, the 5-digit numbers may be helpful for you but not for other Wikimedians. --J.-H. What's the problem to name a file New York City Central Park Northern Shovelers - we have different ideas about what's most important and how to balance filename length. "Northern shovelers" is clearly the most important element IMO, not the location where they happen to be. There is a perfectly valid argument for elaborating CP as Central Park, but to me as long as it's in the description it's worth saving the filename space. We can have that conversation, but it doesn't turn it into a "bad filename". There's always more detail that can be added -- the question is where to draw the line. What goes in the filename vs. what's in the description. Someone else may say "what's the problem to name a file New York City Central Park Northern Shovelers with a male on the left and female on the right, both facing left with water covering their feet on a November mid-afternoon.jpg".

It looks like you've added files to the "bad filenames" category just because of numbers, including the numbers that are automatically included for every single file imported from Flickr e.g. File:2 Bros Pizza (51661011334).jpg. If that were just "2 Bros Pizza.jpg", would you have added it? It's a photo of a restaurant called 2 Bros Pizza, and the filename is 2 Bros Pizza. Yes, it's possible to include more information, but not absolutely necessary.

the 5-digit numbers may be helpful for you but not for other Wikimedians - it doesn't have to be. Even while the automatic Flickr identifiers are pretty uncontroversial to remove, if any of the photographers created an account here and said they actually use that identifier for something on Commons, we would restore the numbers.

To be clear, though, many of the filenames in that category are bad. Are you familiar with the process to rename a file? It makes it much more likely they'll actually be changed if you (a) identify which criterion for renaming they meet and (b) propose a different name. — Rhododendrites ^talk |  20:49, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

I think, in Wikimedia Commons a photography's name should include the exact name of the depicted object and the location where it was taken. That makes (for example) further categorizations much easier. Cryptic abbreviations are not helpful. It is quite clear that some numbers are necessary for the data storage processes. But there are too many files with prefix digits/signs like +00000001 or 'Anas platyrhynchos' duck Mallard here. If you need specific data you can use the „unique ID of original document“ embedded in the Exif metadata of every digital photography. No, I am not familiar with the process to rename files, because I do not have the rights for doing so. --J.-H. Janßen (talk) 23:01, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

You can add this to a file page to propose renaming:

So e.g. for File:Clock 20211113 123247.jpg, {{rename|Morris-Jumel Drawing room grandfather clock 20211113 123247.jpg|2|reason=Clock is ambiguous}} (retaining the date format isn't necessary, but as above, numbers from a photographers'/uploaders' identification systems should be retained, and I'm just assuming 123247 is that) — Rhododendrites ^talk |  23:57, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2022

bald ist es soweit: Vom 1. bis zum 30. September 2022 findet zum zwölften Mal der internationale Wettbewerb Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) statt. Dabei können Bau-, Boden- und Kulturdenkmale fotografiert und die Fotos hochgeladen werden. Du hast an einem der vergangenen Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen. Deshalb laden wir dich gern wieder ein, dieses Jahr mitzumachen. Wir freuen uns auf deine Fotos!

Sieger 2021 – Schloss Langenburg

Vergangenes Jahr hat Matthias Süßen mit einer Drohnenaufnahme von Schloss Langenburg im Morgennebel gewonnen. Welcher Fotograf wird dieses Jahr sein Nachfolger?

Nach WLM 2022 sind wieder zahlreiche neue Denkmallisten entstanden – zum Beispiel die Denkmallisten in Cloppenburg oder in Oldenburg.

Wir haben dieses Jahr unter dem Motto „Klein aber Oho“ drei Sonderpreise für Kleindenkmale ausgelobt. Damit sollen Fotos prämiert werden, die die unterschätzten Kleindenkmale wie Grenzsteine oder Bildstöcke zeigen.

Für die Suche nach Motiven gibt es bei Wikipedia zahlreiche Listen und Karten. Als Einstieg hilft diese Übersichtsseite. Weitere Informationen erhältst du auf der Mitmach-Seite.

Außerdem laden wir Dich ein, ab Anfang September 2022 an der Vorjury teilzunehmen. Diese bewertet die hochgeladenen Bilder und ermittelt so gemeinsam mit der Jury, die im Oktober tagt, die Sieger von Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Deutschland. Das Vorjurytool ist hier bald freigeschaltet. Du benötigst dafür nur deinen Benutzernamen und das Passwort.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze

Hallo J.-H. Janßen,

in Kürze ist es wieder soweit. Der nun schon traditionelle Fotowettbewerb Wiki Loves Monuments wird im September zum vierten Mal stattfinden. In ähnlicher Form hatte unlängst der Wettbewerb "Wiki Loves Earth" eine erfolgreiche Premiere. Zu allen bisherigen vier Wettbewerben haben seit 2011 gut 3000 unterschiedliche Teilnehmer (User) ihren Beitrag geleistet. Du warst dabei, und bist auch herzlich eingeladen, am bevorstehenden WLM-Wettbewerb wieder dabei zu sein.

Allein in Deutschland wurden in den letzten drei Jahren im Rahmen von WLM rund 100.000 Fotos zu den insgesamt ca. 850.000 Kulturdenkmalen bundesweit hochgeladen. Jährlich haben sich mehrere Hundert Wiki-Fotographen daran beteiligt. Auch im kommenden Denkmalmonat wird dies gewiss wieder der Fall sein. Der Tag des offenen Denkmals am 14. September bietet bundesweit vielfältige Möglichkeiten, Denkmale nicht nur von außen, sondern auch von innen zu fotografieren. Denkmallisten sind dabei ein wichtiger Orientierungspunkt und zugleich auch Ziel der Einbindung der Fotos. Auch in diesem Jahr sind wieder neue Denkmallisten hinzugekommen, die hilfreich bei der Planung von individuellen oder Gruppen-Fototouren sind und auf eine Bebilderung warten, wie z.B. zu Görlitz oder Zittau. Unter den Landeshauptstädten fehlt nur noch Stuttgart. Aber auch hier ist Licht in Sicht.

In der Mitte Deutschlands hat die Denkmallandschaft der thüringischen Landeshauptstadt Erfurt nun das Licht der Wikipedia-Welt entdeckt. Mehr als 50 Tabellen enthalten 3.700 Denkmale. Allein die wunderschön restaurierte Altstadt umfasst 1.800 Denkmale. Eine von WMDE geförderte WLM-Fototour nach Erfurt am Wochenende vom 29. – 31. August lädt herzlich ein, diese einzigartige Kulturlandschaft zu dokumentieren. Mehr Informationen findest Du auf der Projektseite.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 - Ein Wiki-Beitrag für die Denkmaltopographie

Hallo J.-H. Janßen,

vor zehn Tagen endete der vierte Fotowettbewerb Wiki Loves Monuments. Du hast daran aktiv teilgenommen und wir möchten Dir dafür herzlich danken.

Mit mehr als 35 Tausend Fotos hat Deutschland wie in den Vorjahren ein gutes Ergebnis erreicht und einen Anteil von 14 % an diesem internationalen Projekt erbracht, an dem sich 40 Länder beteiligten. Sehr erfreulich ist die hohe Zahl an 651 Teilnehmern allein in Deutschland. Schon zum Abschluss des Wettbewerbs waren rund 6000 Fotos (=17 %) in Listen und Artikel eingebunden. Einen detaillierten Überblick zu den Fotos, den Bundesländern und Teilnehmern findest du auf unserer WLM-Projektseite.

Die deutsche Jury hat nun die eingereichten Beiträge übernommen und ist gegenwärtig dabei, diesen wertvollen Fotobestand zu den Kulturdenkmalen zu sichten. Am nächsten Wochenende wird in Hamburg die entscheidende Jury-Sitzung stattfinden. Wir wünschen auch Dir mit Deinem Foto-Beitrag dabei viel Glück und Erfolg. Du darfst gespannt sein und all Deine Freunde bitten, Dir die Daumen zu drücken.

Die preisgekrönten 100 Gewinner-Fotos werden in der Woche ab dem 20. Oktober veröffentlicht. Auf dieser Grundlage wird auch in diesem Jahr ein Kalender-Poster für 2015 gedruckt werden.

Auf zwei Möglichkeiten einer weiteren aktiven Mitwirkung an unserem Denkmal-Projekt möchten wir bei dieser Gelegenheit hinweisen bzw. Dich dazu einladen:

• Unsere Freunde in Österreich haben mit einem gerade gestarteten Denkmal-Cup das Editieren von Denkmallisten und Denkmalartikeln in den Focus gerückt. Bis Ende des Jahres kannst Du Punkte sammeln und Preise gewinnen. Dabei geht es mit diesem Wettbewerb nicht nur um Kulturdenkmale in AT oder D, sondern generell um Denkmale in der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia, als offen für alle Länder.

• Vom 6.-8. November findet erneut die Europäische Denkmalmesse in Leipzig statt. Mit Unterstützung von Wikimedia Deutschland e.V. werden wir zum zweiten Mal die Ergebnisse von Wiki Loves Monuments im Rahmen eines Standes sowie eines Workshops vorstellen.

WLM-Aktivisten sind herzlich eingeladen, bei der Betreuung des Messestandes sowie in den Gesprächen über Möglichkeiten einer partnerschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit mit den Denkmalbehörden mitzuwirken. Die Reisekosten übernimmt für 8-10 registrierte Standbetreuer WMDE. Es muss nicht der gesamte Messezeitraum sein, auch eine Mitwirkung an 2 Tagen hilft uns, den Beitrag der Wikipedia für die Denkmaltopographie sichtbar zu machen.

Und schließlich gilt: Nach dem Wettbewerb ist vor dem Wettbewerb. Bereits jetzt kann jeder mit der Planung von Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 beginnen. Wir freuen uns auf Deine weiteren Beiträge für Wikimedia-Projekte.

Herzlichen Glückwunsch zur erfolgreichen Teilnahme an WLM-2014

Hallo J.-H. Janßen,

auf der gerade zu Ende gegangenen Europäischen Denkmal-Messe in Leipzig konnten wir sehr erfolgreich die Ergebnisse unseres vierten Fotowettbewerbs „Wiki Loves Monuments“ einem breiten Publikum und der Fachwelt vorstellen. Impressionen findest du hier. Dazu gehörten auch die Gewinnerfotos für Deutschland. Zu dem darin eingeschlossenen Wettbewerbsbeitrag von Dir möchten wir Dich herzlich beglückwünschen.

Die Jury hat bekanntlich Ende Oktober die Preisträger auf der Grundlage eines Rating-Verfahrens ermittelt und ging in diesem Jahr davon aus, die Zahl der Preise auf 3 pro Teilnehmer zu begrenzen. Insgesamt wurden 100 Preise durch WMDE gestiftet. Durch das Nachrücken ergaben sich insgesamt 132 Bilder, die auch auf dem diesjährigen WLM-Kalender für 2015 dargestellt sind. Diese wurden durch 64 Preisträger eingebracht. Im Rahmen der Denkmalmesse konnten wir bereits die ersten 11 Bildpreise und 2 Fleißpreise an vier Projektteilnehmer überreichen.

Bis Ende November werden auch die Urkunden und Preise (Büchergutscheine) für die anderen Preisträger in der Geschäftsstelle von WMDE vorbereitet; ebenso der Versand der WLM-Posterkalender, sofern du Deine Wünsche per mail übermittelt hast. Anfang Dezember und damit rechtzeitig zum Weihnachtsfest wirst du also alles erhalten.

Es würde uns sehr freuen, wenn du auch im kommenden Jahr aktiv bei WLM wieder dabei bist.
