Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,400 people (the most of any nation this year) contribute over 8,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate pages on various Wikimedia projects.

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States! These photos are recognized for their photographic quality, artistic merit, and their encyclopedic value as illustrations of unique historical sites. We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret only being able to formally recognize the top 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other national contests, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 winners.

If you would like to view all the photos submitted for the U.S. this year, you may do so here.

Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all U.S. participants to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!

A quick thank you to our national jury, as well as Commons editors who have helped categorize and place photos for the event. And finally, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments and helping to preserve our history through photography - we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events!

File:W H.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Notification about possible deletion

Affected:

And also:

  • File:Stuart Riverwalk in October 2017.jpg You can delete this one, I don't care
  • File:Capitolbuilding.jpg This is a fine historic picture which is primarily of the Capitol building and surrounding area from 1992
  • File:Smithsonian Air Space.jpg This is a very nice picture, primarily of very historic aircraft inside the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, taken in 1992. I'm confident that Wikipedia does NOT already have anything like this
  • File:WashingtnMonument.jpg Very nice photo from 1992, extremely primarily of Washington Monument and surrounding area and how it looked at the time
  • File:USSConstitution.jpg This file is actually of the USS Constellation from 1992, got the ships confused. This is the ONLY photo of it submitted for the national monuments contest, and probably the only one that Wikipedia has of actually on the ship. Very historic
  • File:Smithsonianbuilding.jpg This is extremely primarily of the exterior of the Smithsonian Museum in 1992, showing how it looked then. Very historic
  • File:Outside Statue of Liberty.jpg Considering how much the Statue of Liberty has been closed off in recent years, I would think there's a dearth of images of it. This is a historic image from 1992 before more recent renovation
  • File:Statue of LIberty.jpg Very historic. Taken at the top of the Statue in 1992. Notice the lack of restoration at the time. Extremely unique to this or any site I would think, especially with the Statue being closed off so much in recent years, making inside photos all the more rare
  • File:W H.jpg Photo is from 1992, so a historic look at the White House and surrounding area
  • File:WilsonDam.jpg Actually Fontana Dam, got mixed up. Only photo of it submitted for the competition, and very few photos already on here. This is a historic photo from 1992.
  • File:FortMcHenry.jpg Only photo of Fort Mchenry submitted for contest, I would think very few are on this site at all. This is historic, from 1992.

What did I ever do to you? All these (apart from the first two) are perfectly fine photos of national monuments submitted for the national monuments competition. You're the only one who has a problem with them. If it's because it contains a person, SO DO MANY OTHERS SUBMITTED FOR THE COMPETITION. I looked at every photo, I know.

I’m only going to say this once, Jessejess. Please keep a civil tongue when engaging with others or you will be blocked from any further participation. All Mitte27 has done is nominate these files for deletion. It is not a done deal. Instead of trying to disrupt the process with bad language and removing text, try to make a reasonable argument at the deletion page about why the files should not be deleted. Feel free to invoke policies e.g. COM:SCOPE or COM:NOT. You have at least a week and quite possibly several weeks before an admin can get round to processing this. Green Giant (talk) 18:48, 27 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

He has some kind of personal vendetta against me and any others (probably who have people in the photo), regardless of what the rest of the photo is like. He undoes every time I try to un-nominate them. That's the problem with Wikipedia, the jerks are allowed to poop on everyone else and they have all the power over what is or is not deleted. It's a stupid national monuments contest, it's not photos that are even meant to be put into the articles. Can't the archive of the contest remain intact at least? Jessejess (talk) 04:06, 28 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A few pointers. Firstly, this is not Wikipedia and the rules of Wikipedia don’t apply here. Secondly, you should not remove the deletion request from the file pages. Thirdly, the only place to comment on the photos is at the deletion request page. When you comment on that page, put your comments at the foot of the page and refrain from making this about vendettas - it will convince nobody here about keeping the photos. I will undo the removals from the file pages because if a file is kept or deleted we use a special script to do it quickly and the script doesn’t work if the text isn’t on the file page. Bear in mind that administrators process about 15-20,000 files every week. Green Giant (talk) 09:28, 28 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm new to this so I really don't understand. The goal both on wikipedia and here is to have as FEW pictures as possible of anything, even if that means having 0 or not having what would be good informational photos showing details not usually seen? I still say administrators are given far too much power on both and are often petty and spiteful. I've had a few blatantly insult me personally on wikipedia without good reason. Finally, tell me, WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE CONTEST? If the website is out to delete anything that didn't make the top 10, then a lot of people went to a lot of trouble for absolutely nothing. Jessejess (talk) 20:05, 28 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well I can’t speak for Wikipedia admins but I’m a Commons admin and I don’t engage in verbal abuse of anyone (quite simply because it creates the wrong kind of tension). We were all new to this wiki-thing at one time, so we understand it is confusing at first, but the thing you need here is patience. Despite what you say about the photos, we actually do want photos but they have to follow a few policies. Have a look at the main page and you will see a little note at the top - we currently have more than 43 million files, so we are not doing badly as an image repository. Most of them have either complied with our policies or we just haven’t got round to processing them. What you need to do is be patient, check the deletion page, politely reply to any comments that need a reply and base your arguments on policies/guidelines. No amount of appealing about the monument competition (it is international and not just national by the way) will have the same effect as you arguing about an image being within the project scope. It is important to keep a cool head, especially when responding to comments against you or your edits. Personal attacks and disruptive comments only escalate a situation; please keep calm and remember that action can be taken against other parties if necessary. Please try to remain civil with your comments. Thanks!

Oh yeah, COMPLETELY SCREW ME OVER, DESTROY MY HISTORY, COMPLETELY CRAP ALL OVER ME, AND then I'm not even allowed to defend myself. Both this site and Wikipedia are COMPLETELY UNFAIR AND DON'T DESERVE TO EVEN BE ONLINE. All of my pictures were of good quality, with actual national monuments in them, and some with really unique views not normally seen, like the interior ones. There's no debating that. But the powers that be don't care. They see a face and it has to be deleted. Never mind that it was for a stupid contest, and the purpose of the photos was to be in the archive for the contest, not any article. Oh never mind that. The oligarchy that is Wikipedia/Wikimedia only serves to screw over the regular pee-ons like me. What purpose is there for ANYONE to submit a photo? Especially if it has a non-famous face in it? For your sake, I hope you also deleted any other photo from the contest with a non-famous face in it. I SAW QUITE A FEW. Jessejess (talk) 16:12, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Last year you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States. Thanks to people like you it was a great success, with over 1,400 people contributing over 8,000 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information. The event runs similar to last year with some small but exciting changes: improved state guides, an interactive map, and a larger prize pool! Like last year, you'll be able to upload your photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017, and we hope to see you again in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 11:46, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
