First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Sourcing[edit]

Hi Mayabhai7868. I noticed that you changed the source information at File:DPIFF logo.png and File:DPIFF trophy.png from {{Own work}} to "Website" in these two edits: [1] [2]. Simply putting "Website" as a source is not enough information to allow other editors to verify that these images are released under a CC BY-SA 4.0 license, which is what you claim they are released under. Sorry Lord for own work i thought i have taken from the website so they must be own which I didn't consider and got misunderstood. Thanks for the reply. For future reference, you should only mark content as your own work if you have created it yourself. Whenever you upload content from an online source, you should provide the specific URL where you got the content from in the source field. The author field is for the person or organization who created the content (in this case DPIFF). Notice that at the bottom of http://www.dpiff.in/about/ there is is a copyright notice: "© 2019 DPIFF All rights reserved". This means the images you have uploaded from the page are ineligible for Wikimedia Commons, which only accepts free content. Images that you find online are almost always ineligible for Wikimedia Commons, unless they are explicitly released under a free license. Hi Lord okay I got the point so if someone authorised from DPIFF tells me to use this content for Wikipedia then it will work right or if I add author and other details as their name it can work right? --Mayabhai7868 (talk)

If DPIFF agrees to release these images under a free license, they must send evidence of this permission through Wikimedia Common's Open-source Ticket Request System so it can be verified by other editors. We can't just take your word that they have given you permission. If you plan to ask DPIFF for permission to use these images, I would recommend using one of our standard email templates to ensure that all necessary formalities are fulfilled. No Lord I'm not associated with them in any way but as this is prestigious award for Indian Celebrity and I read about it in newspaper I googled it and searched for Wikipedia but there was no article so I wrote about it. --Mayabhai7868 (talk)
