Warning sign
This media may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:2010 tenn gub election.png, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

@Hedwig in Washington: Not sure what this is about. I created that image, and this template message is instructing me to tag it with {{Own}}. Yet it is already tagged appropriately, and I can't find any other requirements that I'm not in compliance with that would have prompted this. I assume this is a mistake, so I'm going to remove your tag from the image. Please be more careful in the future. There are plenty of actual copyvios hosted here that would be better suited to your attention. Swarm (talk) 05:39, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Don't ever remove those tags yourself. That'll get you into hot water. :-) The question is: Where did the original map come from? You didn't create the map yourself. Have a peek at Com:DW. If I can be of help, let me know! Thanks for your uploads! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 05:43, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Hedwig in Washington: Sorry about that. :P Yes, obviously I copied a generic county map and colored in the counties individually. Why does it matter? You don't need to verify its copyright status because it's intrinsically uncopyrightable. Per Com:DW#Maps, generic, unoriginal maps such as this are fundamentally not subject to copyright and may be used freely. The image is unquestionably in the public domain and there is no "original author" of a plain county map. It is merely a visualization of topographic features, something that isn't copyrightable (and the policy specifically explains why). There is no license of any kind associated with this image, nor could there legally be one. With respect, please do not tag these types of images for deletion because the rationale is faulty and does not apply to these images. Please revert the tagging of any other images in the same vein. Swarm (talk) 06:45, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, according to Com:EI all files on Commons need a source. Did you use this map? Looks like it. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:27, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I get what you're saying and I can add a source if I must, but the point of a source is to be verify the licensing information and ensure that non-free images aren't hosted. If an image is inherently and without question in the public domain, forcing uploaders to provide a "source", lest their images be deleted, seems like an unnecessary formality that goes against the point of that policy. The ultimate point is to protect copyright and ensure that only free files are being hosted, right? Applying it to generic public domain maps that use {{Own}} really doesn't seem like a good idea. Not everyone is going to be around to rectify this non-issue and it will result in public domain files being deleted for a trivial procedural reason, rather than an actual copyright concern. I disagree with that, and this is exactly why I don't contribute here. There is literally endless non-educational and improperly-licensed content that can be found hosted on this project, and you're worrying about fact-based maps that are literally uncopyrightable. File:2001 War in Afghanistan collage 3.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
