First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Uploading files from wikivoyage shared[edit]

Hi.

I can help you move your files from wikivoyage to Commons. It would however be nice if you could check the files after the transfer to see if description is ok and perhaps add some categories.

Moving the files with a bot will also make sure that an original upload log is added. That is good to avoid problems later if someone notice that one of the files is used on a website before it was uploaded here on Commons. --MGA73 (talk) 21:16, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

Thank you for your offer, but I have already uploaded all (I hope) my pictures. In this moment I put to every file on shared a mark with NowCommons|<Filename>. I will have finished this process on Sunday cob. This process is even nessecary as a kind of quality check of my own transfer work. I have already located one file I miss.

So it will be more helpfull to help one of the other users. But one time more thank you for your offer and work. It is very helpfull for us to keep the community together.

Okay. But on shared you need to add "File:" in "NowCommons|File:<Filename>". I will fix that with my bot.

Have a look at the examples Image:Antalya Gewürzverkauf.JPG‎ or Image:Catal Hüyük.JPG‎ on shared. This files are already changed. Is this fine for you? Oops I did not think of that as a chance to check files... So I let my bot do it. Hope it will not make it harder for you :-(
My plan was to sort the files in http://wikivoyage-old.org/shared/Category:Files_uploaded_by_Elelicht in different categories. Files with a NowCommons, files with an Ignore and files with a KeepLocal. That should make it easy to check the files. And any files that was not moved (or tagged) should remain in the main category. It worked fast and easy for other users. Hope it can help you now that I started to "mess" with your files.

Uploading images from Wikivoyage[edit]

Please do not upload any images from Wikivoyage without including an original upload log. The fastest way to correct your incorrect uploads is to delete all of the files and redo the copying process from scratch. --Stefan4 (talk) 00:44, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for asking. It is possible to explain the difference. I know this is not easy for you, but I`m more a author on wikivoyage than a Wiki-Process Expert. I want to correct my mistakes. I took a look at other uploads and made a correction on File File:Sehzade Camii.jpg. Are you thinkthis is OK now? Then In I will correct the uploads I already made from Walter 57. Die meisten Bilder musste ich umbenennen beim Transfer von Wikivoyage Shared auf Commons. Ich habe das bisher nur in den Artikeln korrigiert. Derzeit arbeiten wir alle bei Wikivoyage auf den 15.01.2013 hin. Bis dahin sollten die meissten Migrations-Fehler aus den Artikeln geräumt sein.
