Category discussion warning

Friden Flexowriter has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hallo Howcheng, why did you remove the category Satellite pictures of Hawaii? The image shows the whole island and not only the erupting Kilauea. I thought that this "over categorizing" is allowed. Warm regards --Ras67 (talk) 21:19, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ras67: This is not the type of over-categorization that OVERCAT discusses. If, for example, there was a smaller island off the coast of Hawaii and was included in the picture, then you could also put it in Category:Satellite pictures of Hawaii as well. Does that make sense? howcheng {chat} 03:43, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Daily gallery updater has failed on User:Howcheng/Recent uploads/Hawaii[edit]

Hello. This message is to inform you that a daily gallery in your userspace, User:Howcheng/Recent uploads/Hawaii, has failed. Due to software limitations, the bot has a hard upper-limit of about 6000 files per day (including overflow galleries), while your gallery had 19444 files.

This usually happens because a gallery is too broad, encompassing too many subcategories. Please review the logs here and request that a subcategory be excluded, or narrow your category choice(s).

Please make your request for removal within 4 days, or your gallery will be subject to removal.

ommons:Deletion requests/File:Interview 16 October 1957 of Dale Whittaker and Wesley B. Harding re Sputnik-1 observations with recording of the satellite.wav[edit]

Clearly I am not a wikipedia power user. I just want this historical interview to be available. I've reached out to KATL for permission/a license/whatever I need. I would appreciate a clue about how one would obtain and document a license from a third party. I've looked at the CC page and figure that the Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International. But, if I do get their agreement, how do I satisfy you that I really have it? Do I need to have them sign a printed copy of the license and put up a scan? Seriously, after reading for about an hour, I really don't know how to (formally) get a license and how to document it on the link/file. thank you Ben — Preceding unsigned comment added by Volga89 (talk • contribs) 17:36, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Aloha, The image you flagged was a image I took with my cell phone. Yes, it is the same image all over the web - because we cleared it for them to use. I have the original on my cell phone. Pls advise. Allanbcool (talk) 11:10, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Allanbcool: OK, from my end I can't tell the difference between you having the image on your phone and you downloading it from the Internet (especially because you are a new user), so sorry about that. Is it possible for you to upload the full-size version? That way it will be larger than anything else available on the Internet. Also, please go to https://tools.wmflabs.org/relgen/ and you can declare yourself as the copyright holder of the image. I've never used the tool myself, but it's supposed to be pretty easy. Reinstating Images[edit]

Moved here from User talk:Howcheng/Archive2.Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:54, 10 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I received a notification from you that several images I uploaded last month were removed due to copyright policy violations. I work for a company that has several clients in the vacation rental industry and they have given us permission to upload those images that they provided and credit them for it. Is there any way to get them re-added to wikimedia commons? Would I need to get declarations from our clients? If our clients somehow provided copyrighted material without our knowledge, please let me know.

I added the file names below for the sake of reference:

File:Rocks by the Ocean.jpg File:Scenic Maui Beach.jpg File:Bay pool in Hawaii.jpg File:Pool and flowers.jpg File:Iron Boardwalk in Hawaii.jpg File:Jamaican Ocean View.jpg File:Jamaica Shoreline.jpg File:Jamaica Sea.jpg File:Jamaican Water.jpg File:Torrey pines view.jpg File:Sunset over California.jpg File:San Diego Sunset.jpg File:Surfer kid.jpg File:USS Midway in Harbor.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by BizWitwiki (talk • contribs) 00:55, 10 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@BizWitwiki: Hi, they have to agree to allow anyone to use these images for any purpose (including commercial ones): please read https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0 for details. If that's acceptable to them, then you may upload the images again, and then they need to go to https://tools.wmflabs.org/relgen/, which will log their permissions. Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Hi again. Sorry for disturbing. I just uploaded a couple of those vinyl labels. But i'm not sure if some of them now are acceptable. For example (i can see now, that the Maverick's logo could be a problem) and others with more details: 1, 2, 3 or this that I noted its a CD after all. If they have copyright you could delete it, or you can let me know what I can do . Sincerely, --Chrishonduras (talk) 04:53, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Stonewall Inn 1969.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons![edit]

Dear Howcheng

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC[edit]

Hello Howcheng,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

PD-US no notice[edit]

Hi

When you say "PD-US no notice" is not applicable to some photos, what do you mean exactly? What should be the evidence that a picture is published with no copyright notice tag in United States? What should be the reason to believe a photo is published with "PD-US no notice"?

Cheers Shkuru Afshar (talk) 08:47, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Shkuru Afshar: Here's the problem: we can't tell if there was a copyright statement printed on the back of the photo, or if it was included in a book or other publication where a copyright statement could be applied to everything in it. File:Robert Mitchum and Theresa Russell 1976.jpg is an example of how you can show that there was no copyright notice: this was a publicity photo that was distributed by itself; we have scans of both the front and back and we can see that there is no copyright notice. Something like this is required. I hope that makes sense. howcheng {chat} 07:44, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Doug Thanos.jpg[edit]

Hi, I'm confused why you closed Commons:Deletion requests/File:Doug Thanos.jpg as delete. 4 of the 5 !votes were for keep, and the argument for keep was well-supported by COM:DM. Could you explain your reasoning? –IagoQnsi (talk) 05:14, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, the votes don't count for anything if they're not supported by policy. Next, De minimis doesn't apply because the face of Thanos took up a large portion of the picture, even if it's not the primary subject of the photo. Finally, what is the purpose of the photo? To identify the subject. That being the case, the cropped version is perfectly adequate, and it doesn't contain the copyrighted character. howcheng {chat} 05:37, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion Request Buchinger_Wilhelmi_Maria_Buchinger.jpg[edit]

in the deletion request to this image you stated that TinEye doesn't find it. However, the photo was published here, 2016. On Commons it was uploaded 2019.

Hi, Howcheng. Were you able to compare the artwork with the photograph before closing the deletion request? Cheers, Genericusername57 (talk) 16:02, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The uploader is a long-time editor in good standing. We have no reason to doubt their word. holly {chat} 03:12, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you zoom in on the ear of the artwork, you can see little bits of her hair from the photograph peeking out from under the drawn lines. I think the same is true for the lower eyelashes and one of the eyebrows. Genericusername57 (talk) 12:58, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And the ochre area at the side/base of the neck has a triangular hole through which you can see a patch of skin from the original photograph. Genericusername57 (talk) 17:11, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And File:Console de travail Krita utulisée pour le Drawtober.png shows the uploader's Krita setup when creating the artwork; on the righthand side you can see that the "background" layer has a thumbnail of the original photo. Genericusername57 (talk) 22:00, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Genericusername57: Is there some reason you didn't raise these points in your deletion nomination? These probably would have made a difference, but you can't possibly expect us to check these very fine details. From a procedural standpoint, I'm afraid you'll have to renominate, because it's bad form for me to delete something based on discussion that took place on my talk page where the general public won't normally be looking. holly {chat} 07:05, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't the nominator, User:Veggies was. I didn't think it would be necessary to point out these "micro" details, given that the "macro" ones -- pose, angle, lighting -- were so obviously identical. Couldn't you reverse your close and leave it to another admin to make the final determination? Genericusername57 (talk) 22:14, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
User:Howcheng: Unbelievable what passes for administrator-level scrutiny on Commons. "The uploader is a long-time editor in good standing. We have no reason to doubt their word." I count no less than twenty files that have been nominated and deleted just based on a cursory glance at their talk page. My god. If this is what "good standing" qualifies as—and so good that admins like you don't even bother to check the nomination evidence and simply close requests based on "good standing"—I'd hate to see what an editor in bad standing looks like. You may as well start using Commons for unabashed movie piracy. Embarrassing. -- Veggies (talk) 23:23, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Veggies: Look at it from my perspective. Please understand that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of DRs waiting for action in the backlog up to five months old, so as admins we are trying to get through these as quickly as possible. I did some legwork to find out why the image was kept in the first place, and because that explanation was good enough for another admin, I was going to need something compelling to overrule them (your RFC and DR had no comments on them, either). You stated that it was difficult to follow their conversation because it was in French. I don't really read it either, but I can use Google Translate. I count no less than twenty files that have been nominated and deleted just based on a cursory glance at their talk page. Yeah, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything: files get deleted all the time for honest mistakes (I mean, just look at my talk page and archives). Not only that, but some of those nominations were done by the same admin that decided to keep this particular image, so there's not any sort of favoritism being shown. Basically, the point I'm trying to make is that when you start a DR, you can't expect anyone else to connect the dots for you: provide good evidence it will be acted upon accordingly. holly {chat} 16:56, 5 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nice find![edit]

Hey, kudos for uploading File:Eddie Cameron and Wallace Wade.jpg; that's a great find. I'd been wanting a better infobox photo of Eddie Cameron for a while now. Cheers, IagoQnsi (talk) 04:58, 5 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@IagoQnsi: Thanks! I'm slowly working my way through the Los Angeles Times collection in the UCLA Digital Library and uploading anything that looks useful. holly {chat} 16:59, 5 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Holly, thanks for processing this quite old deletion request, and I don't disagree with your decision to keep the image, as I also leaned towards keeping. However, I just want to point out that your reasoning fully rests on the assumption that PD-Yugoslavia is applicable; that is, that the postcard was published in what was later Yugoslavia. Although the photographer was in Drvar, it is possible that the postcard wasn't published there but in present-day Austria, as I said in my comment. If that were the case, I don't think PD-Yugoslavia would apply, and we wouldn't have another applicable PD rationale. But certainly the likelihood of any copyright issues with this postcard is very low. Gestumblindi (talk) 18:27, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Gestumblindi: It's entirely possible that the publishing company's name is on the other side of the postcard, but we can obviously only work based on the information we have available, and I didn't think COM:PCP applied here because there wasn't any significant doubt about the PD status. holly {chat} 17:21, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I'm fine with that. Just commented because I thought your closing comment didn't quite address the full picture of potential issues, but no big deal. Gestumblindi (talk) 17:27, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for closing the DR linked above. In the comments I made I noted that one image that's tagged as being included in the DR but isn't included in the list on the DR page (File:Cameron Qatar.jpg) is not covered by Crown Copyright and is actually a Press Association image. I'm happy to nominate it for a second DR, but it might also be easier to amend your closure to delete File:Cameron Qatar.jpg while keeping the rest. —Tom Morris (talk) 12:14, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Tom Morris: Done, and thanks for letting me know. holly {chat} 16:05, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Микола Василечко: Oh, I'm sorry, I totally misread your statement! I will undelete. holly {chat} 17:10, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think, that you made a wrong decision when closing the request. At first, "we generally assume publication soon after creation" is not true, but given that this seems to be parade portrait – is in English such expression? – I am ready to accept publication soon after creation. The question is: in which country? First publication in Kyrgyzstan is not sure, it could be in Russia or Kazakhstan (Kyrgyzstan was part of Kazakhstan until 1936). Russia and Kazakhstan demand both 70 years from death, that means: the photo was not free on URAA date and USA demands 95 years from publication, which is not passed. I accept first publication in Soviet Union, because nobody knew about that guy in other countries, but without evidence I am not ready to accept Kyrgyzstan license. Taivo (talk) 09:05, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Taivo: When the author is known, then yes it's 70 years pma, but if unknown, then only Kazakhstan gives protection for 70 years after publication, so if it was Russia or Kyrgyzstan (50 years) then we would be OK, as it would have been PD before the URAA date. For that reason, I think we can keep it until someone can prove that Kazakhstan was the country of first publication. holly {chat} 16:18, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Remove watermark from video[edit]

Hi Holly!

I was wondering if you knew, or knew someone who knew, how to remove a watermark from a video? I have a dvd of Outlaw Justice that I would like to remove a small watermark from before uploading. It only appears at the start and end of the film and is only the logo of the distributor of this edition. The film itself is public domain, by my own assessment of lack of copyright renewal, so I was planning to upload it. While the watermark does fall into the COM:Watermarks acceptable range, I'd prefer to not have the watermark at all. Thank you for any help you might be able to provide!

Did you mean to delete this? I saw the commons delinker bot on enwiki removing links to this file, with a link to Commons:Deletion requests/File:AozI I-em1c.jpg. Based on that deletion request, it looks like both the duplicate file being nominated for deletion and the correct file have been deleted. Hog Farm (talk) 00:45, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Hog Farm: Oops! Thanks for letting me know. holly {chat} 17:00, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Holly Cheng, when the files are kept, please remove the DR from the files. --Krd 05:33, 17 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Krd: I think we need a bot to do that when people forget. Probably the same one that archives the discussions. The logic would be pretty simple: for every file link on the discussion page, if the file exists and has a deletion template on it, remove it. holly {chat} 17:38, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That it not possible. Many DR are closed as "deleted some, kept some" and a bot cannot resolve that. Krd 17:41, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't have to. The bot doesn't archive until after some time has passed, yes? So presumably, anything that should have been deleted would already have been done so (or converted to a redirect). Any remaining files therefore were kept. If those have a {{Delete}} on them, then remove them. The only use case where this fails is when an admin closes the discussion as a deletion but forgets to actually delete the file. holly {chat} 17:45, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely not. I see DRs every day where admins decided to delete but didn't delete the file for whatever reason. Krd 17:51, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah OK, as you can see in the conversation just below this one, DelReqHandler failed to delete one in a batch so the bot would have incorrectly processed it. holly {chat} 18:42, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Holly, you recently closed this DR, but the file File:Carballo & Mihanovich.jpg was not deleted. I guess it was an error on the batch job (the DR had several files). Cheers! Günther Frager (talk) 18:27, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Holly Cheng,

as I read en:War memorials (Aisne)#Images Saint-Quentin (confirmed by [1] and [2]), the memorial as such, with the parts by Albert Bartholomé and Raoul Lamourdedieu, was erected in 1926. In 1935, the top part was changed, and these four flame carriers replaced a statue by Bartholomé. The flame carriers are said to have been done by "a pupil of Lamourdedieu" without telling a name. So it's hard to tell when the French copyright for them will expire. Any photos not showing them could be restored however. --Rosenzweig τ 00:26, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Rosenzweig: Your second link says "1935 : la statue est transférée au parc Saint-Crépin en juillet, et remplacée par les oeuvres de Lamourdedieu." To me, that means the copyright for that part still belongs to Lamourdedieu as it's his design. But we can probably still restore a few of them even if the top is still visible (with de minimis). holly {chat} 08:41, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's clear that these flame carriers are from 1935, so not yet ok for Commons. The French language text says that they were ordered (by the town) from Lamourdedieu, so they may well be his design, even if a pupil of his carried out the work. I see you already decided to restore some of the files and leave the rest for undeletion in 2031. Given what we know, that's the correct decision I think. Regards --Rosenzweig τ 16:07, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Holly, please look at the mentioned diff. The nomination page the file actually points to is a closed deletion request, so that's invalid. I'm not saure about your intention, so I cannot fix it. Please check. --Krd 15:29, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Krd: The files in my DR were undeleted last year but they shouldn't have been. They aren't eligible for restoration until 2048 due to URAA. holly {chat} 18:25, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you put the delete template into tge files, please create a new DR. The current state is invalid. Krd 19:04, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ohhh! I pasted the wrong link, doh. I'll fix. Thanks! holly {chat} 19:08, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Holly, in this deletion request you decided to keep this file. But just one day later in this dr you decided the opposite way. I don't really understand this. -- Chaddy (talk) 13:35, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Chaddy: In the first DR, IIRC the map was supposedly still in use, and here on Commons we don't determine if the usage is correct. As such, the correct resolution would be to fix the map. In the second one, I didn't notice that one of the images was the same as the first one, but that DR said that all usages had been replaced by more accurate maps, so there was no real reason to keep any of them anymore. holly {chat} 17:40, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you for the explanation. -- Chaddy (talk) 18:10, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Postcards in the Boston Public Library[edit]

Just an FYI, but the duplicates are in Category:Postcards in the Boston Public Library if you care to have a look. There's still plenty of them there. Thanks for letting me know about the "duplicate" template though. I wasn't aware that was a thing. I'll be sure to use it in the future. Although it seems less then ideal where the number of duplicates is in the double digits. I'm fine using it instead of nominating the files for deletion if you think that's the better way to deal with them though. Adamant1 (talk) 18:37, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Adamant1: Deletions for exact or scaled-down duplicates are processed as speedy deletions so they'll typically be done within 24 hours. As you know, DRs can take months before someone gets around to processing them, and I'm supposed to confirm that the thing I'm deleting is actually a duplicate. We'll often create redirects to the kept files as well so that we don't break any off-wiki links. holly {chat} 18:42, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Europa stamps 1973[edit]

Just an FYI, but with stamps specifically usually if there's nothing in the copyright guideline about stamps we tend to air on the side of caution and just delete images of them. Especially in cases where there's no evidence that government works in general are public domain. But even then the images are usually deleted anyway. With stamps of Yugoslavia specifically there was a previous DR Commons:Deletion requests/File:Maia Chiburdanidze 2001 Yugoslavia stamp.jpg where the images were deleted for the essentially the same reasons I gave for why the should have been in this case. Regardless, I think the closing administrator gave a pretty good argument on their end for why Yugoslavian stamps should be deleted if you care to read over it. They have a lot of experience in the area. So there's no reason to question their rational. I'm not personally a fan of deleting things purely because of the outcomes in previous deletion requests. So I'm not going to ask that you delete the images that were kept. But it is something to consider for next time and tangentially related, but at least in my experience we can't go purely by Commons:Stamps. Since most of the entries were added years ago by a single user based on either bad or extremely outdated information. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 19:59, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Adamant1: I've got a guideline page showing that stamps are PD in the Balkan countries, so that's what I'm going with. If it's wrong, then it needs to be fixed. I just added a new topic about this on Commons talk:Stamps. holly {chat} 20:57, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't saying that you should ignore the guideline page. But the context and outcomes from previous DRs matter to. Thanks for starting the discussion though. I'm all for having something clarified when it needs to be. --Adamant1 (talk) 21:01, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Holly. This DR that you closed also contains File:RB FioravantiEurochamp Leroy 001.jpg which you missed - its buried in the text of the DR. Could you delete this please? Gbawden (talk) 07:51, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Done, thanks. holly {chat} 17:00, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Holly, the mosaic by Walter Womacka in File:Stamp Eisenhuettenstadt Womacka.jpg is, as you have written, covered by FoP. So why have you deleted the stamp? Is there anything on the stamp apart from the mosaic that could be under copyright? -- Robert Weemeyer (talk) 15:31, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Robert Weemeyer: FOP allows you to incorporate copyrighted artwork (in certain jurisdictions) in your own work when it's permanently installed in a public location. A photo of the mosaic is OK. The issue the stamp looks like it has artwork that was created specifically for the stamp. My guess it was an illustration by Womacka in preparation for making the mosaic, which means it has a copyright separate from the mosaic itself. Does that make sense? holly {chat} 17:16, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can hardly see any difference between the image of the mosaic on the stamp and the mosaic. But if I understand you correctly, you consider the image on the stamp an artwork separate from the mosaic itself. -- Robert Weemeyer (talk) 07:51, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Robert Weemeyer: Yes, that was my thinking. holly {chat} 17:11, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"I assumed that the link was to prove that the artist was alive."[edit]

Regarding COM:Deletion requests/File:NYC Sewer 20231024 115155.jpg, can you help me understand:

  1. Why would you ever interpret "2022 artwork, artist still living--see the artist's website" as "2022 artwork, (artist still living--see the artist's website)" instead of "(2022 artwork, artist still living--see the artist's website)?
  2. Why would you believe that you'd need different links to verify both the year of the artwork and that the artist is still living?
  3. Regarding your "next time, please be more explicit", can you provide example text that you would have understood? -- DanielPenfield (talk) 23:05, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DanielPenfield: As you are an active user in good standing, I didn't feel the need to verify either the date or the artist being alive. The main point of contention was that if the sculpture were just a manhole cover, then there was a good chance it didn't even qualify for copyright protection in the first place. You didn't respond to his comment until after I made mine, so I was proposing the toys exception (i.e., unlike an actual manhole cover, a sculpture is not a utilitarian object) based on the info that was in the DR itself. The fact that you didn't add anything after Infrogmation brought up that possibility indicated to me that you had no other relevant info to provide. If you had said in your original nomination, "You can see the other side of the sculpture on the artist's website" then I'm sure we totally would have checked it out. holly {chat} 23:26, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Vegetatives Wachsen (Klaus-Jürgen Luckey)[edit]

Just an FYI for the future, but my screen name is Adamant1, not Adam. I'd appreciate it if you at least fixed it in your closing comment if nothing else. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 21:00, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Noted, thanks. holly {chat} 21:03, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request closing[edit]

You closed the deletion request Commons:Deletion requests/Template:Zionist symbol. I think it would be better keep all the deletion requests related to this topic open until there is a decision on the proposal. Especially as the proposal proposes to decide over existing templates in regular deletion requests. GPSLeo (talk) 18:53, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@GPSLeo: Are there others? I haven't looked past November's backlog yet. holly {chat} 19:12, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes there are also Commons:Deletion requests/Template:Chinese sensitive content and Commons:Deletion requests/Template:LGBT symbol linked in the discussion and at the proposal. GPSLeo (talk) 19:16, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:Deletion requests/Template:Chinese sensitive content isn't included in Commons:Deletion requests/2023/11, so I'm impressed you found it. My other option is to close both of those as well, pending the outcome of the VP discussion. holly {chat} 19:31, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think it is better to keep all these requests open until there is a decision on the proposal. But it seems that the discussion of the proposal has stalled as there is neither support or opposition on the proposal. GPSLeo (talk) 19:52, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, done. holly {chat} 21:01, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, all the accounts involved in uploading images related to this case are spammers, socks and LTA trying to use pt.WP as a means for promotion. This is person is not notable by any means. Your closing means that this LTA has now approval from Commons to keep using it as a free host, and also means that we, in the Pt.WP, with likely have to deal with more socks and more promotion. I, therefore, strong disagree with your decision. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 23:43, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, you kept all of the spammer's images, claiming that they are in scope. Why are they in scope? This person is not notable per any means. They had to resort to creating socks and changing names to try to use pt.WP as a means for promotion. Even their Wikidata item created by the same user who went the distance to save these pictures doesn't have a single source. Their scholar profile doesn't have a single citation. How are these images useful to the project? Where they will be used? How are they of any educational value? Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 23:51, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kacamata: You did not really answer Geo Swan's repeated questions, and as I wrote, bad users can still make good contributions. Even if he himself is a spammer, someone can still write an article about him or use these photos. It would be different if he were a random nobody. Also, all of them look like he set the timer on his camera and put it in front of him, so there is no reason to doubt claims of "own work". holly {chat} 00:09, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
He's literally a random nobody trying to use WMF projects for self-promotion. This is not even close to be a good contribution. It's simply a spammer uploading pictures to use in promotion articles. Geo Swan is a harasser indef. blocked in en.WP for harassment and wiki hunting. His behavior is always the same, he keeps sending you messages, pinging you and asking the same questions until he gets the answer he wants. He was doing this to me, this why I stopped engaging with him, because this is what he wants. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 00:33, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Recent uploads/Hawaii[edit]

Hi Holly Cheng, recently I've noticed that you're watching uploads regarding Hawaiʻi on a regular base. Please let me know directly, if you have any observations concerning the files I uploaded or how I can improve the description page. Greetings from Berlin to California. Best, --ThT (talk) 20:13, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question about OGL (UK) license versus Flickr CC BY-NC-ND 2.0[edit]

@Holly Cheng. Please, see here: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Sheikh Hasina with David Cameron.jpg

Can this reason be used on recent photos found on that website, so they can not be deleted for the same reason?

Can a "formal" page be created or a "tag" that can be added to uploads from this UK Government source- so that DR's could be avoided in the future? Thank you, -- Ooligan (talk) 16:12, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ooligan: Sorry for the late response, I haven't been on Commons for over a week. If the Flickr account still says “All content is Crown copyright and re-usable under the Open Government Licence v3.0, except where otherwise stated,” then it should be OK. Removing the {{Flickrreview}} tag and linking to the account page with that text should be sufficient. I don't see a need to create a separate tag, but you could if you want. holly {chat} 17:01, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
