Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear Jon Roanhaus,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

Monumental Effort[edit]

St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in Marysville, Washington: one of many fine submissions by Jon Roanhaus.

Goodness gracious, Jon Roanhaus. I am blown away by the volume of photos you've already contributed this summer. Props! It seems from your talk page that Wiki Loves Monuments is kinda your thing. :-)

Please let me know if you have ideas about this year's Summer of Monuments campaign. You are so actively involved I am curious to know what you think. Cheers, Monumenteer2014 (talk) 20:21, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

One photo request[edit]

Dear Nyttend,

Thank you for your message. I am repeating a message I posted elsewhere, because I have no confidence in wikipedia as an efficient communication device.

I live in the Seattle area. I've been in the Saint Louis area several times in the past ten years, which accounts for the pics. Discovered this forum last year. I've explored East Saint Louis for the purpose of experiencing music history, of which it has a considerable amount. I do not find the city unsafe from my experience.

At the earliest opportunity, I won't be in Saint Louis again until next year. Would be happy to document the Site at that time.

Regards, Jon

I noticed that you're uploading lots of National Register photos. Thanks a lot! Would you be willing to help with a specific photo request? I got photos for all sites on en:National Register of Historic Places listings in St. Clair County, Illinois on Memorial Day, but literally just one day later, another site got designated, the en:Union Trust Bank Company Building on Collinsville Avenue in downtown East St Louis. Would you be able to photograph it? This is only two blocks off the Barack Obama Avenue exit from I-64, and you wouldn't need to worry about going through the city's really scary sections. Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 23:29, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your response! Probably the best place to leave this message was my talk page — had you responded only here, I wouldn't have seen it, but I got a prominent notice that you'd edited my talk page. I tend to agree about the safety thing (my thoughts on visiting the city), but it seems like most people are afraid even to get off at the exits, let alone go driving through various neighborhoods during the day. Indeed, I had the impression you lived in the area, but as I'm currently in Indiana and preparing to move to Pennsylvania, you're probably going to be back there a lot sooner than I will be. Nyttend (talk) 01:46, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ditto on all the above comments. Send all the St. Louis stuff that you've got! Smallbones (talk) 05:15, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Smallbones, Thank you for the feedback. I have a backlog of pics since the last contest. Enjoyed your video file on Adamstown, Pennsylvania. Been near the village but not through it. Visited every county in the Keystone State (hobby). Best wishes, Jon

Washington Hotel, Metaline Falls, WA[edit]

wrong?
Probably the right one?

Can you check File:Washington Hotel, Metaline Falls.jpg of yours from last year? Is is marked as Washington Hotel, Metaline Falls, and refnum 79002550, but based on the nom form, it doesn't seem to be the correct property. This one, File:Washington Hotel, Metaline Falls, WA.jpg seems more likely. Thanks. Generic1139 (talk) 20:55, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This message is for generic1139 from Jon Roanhaus. The Wikipedia Commaons talk process is appallingly inefficient and non-intuitive. This seems designed to make things more difficult.

Secondly, you appear to be correct about the Washington Hotel Site in Metaline Falls, Washington, USA. My pic is of a hotel or like building at Fourth & Grandview in Metaline Falls, WA USA. Please remove the pic and sorry for the error.

Corrections made. Don't worry about the error, and keep uploading. --Generic1139 (talk) 16:08, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The file is now misnamed, however, since it isn't Washington Hotel, but is instead Pend Oreille Apartments. I suggest that you request a rename, which is simpler at this point than requesting a delete because the file has been there a while. It is also faster if you, the uploader, requests it. All you need to do is edit the image description page, and add this text at the top
{{rename|File:Pend Oreille Apartments.jpg|1|reason=wrong building name used}}

and an admin will do the rename. Or at least that worked when I made an error in a file name. --Generic1139 (talk) 16:27, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

National Register of Historic Places[edit]

Hello, Jon. When you upload images of places that are on the National Register of Historic Places, would you please put them in a more specific category, and not in Category:National Register of Historic Places? It would be good to use as specific a category as possible, but if you could at least put them in the category for the state or territory they're in, that would help. Getting them in categories for the county and/or city, and for what kind of place they are, would be even better. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:05, 26 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Auntof6,

Thank you for your message. I may be unsure of your meaning. My pic uploads are done in the National Register Of Historic Places page or tab in the specific state, county, and site for each pic. This is done in the frame or box where there is an 'Upload Pic' hyperlink. Each link is specific to that site. I have uploaded more than 200 pics in this fashion. Am currently unaware of another viable method.

Sincerely,

Jon Roanhaus

I don't know where "Upload Pic" is. On my screen, I see an "Upload file" option in the left-hand column under "participate". Whatever you're doing, images end up in Category:National Register of Historic Places when it would be better for them to be in categories that are more specific. As far as I know, being on a specific page when you do an upload doesn't mean the images end up in that category: you have to specify the category(ies). In any case, if you don't know a way to get uploaded images into better categories when you upload, then you could change the categories after uploading. It would be much easier for you to do it because you know what you're uploading. For anyone else to do it, they have to research where the place in the image is. For an example of what I'm talking about, you can see File:AKC 2014 pics10 004.jpg, which I changed the categories on. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:14, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Auntof6,

My message was done from memory and not a view of the page that I normally use. The correct term is 'Upload Image'. No one showed me the 'correct ' method, so I used what worked. 'AKC 2014 pics10' was uploaded from a cellphone to my laptop and then to wikipedia, which accounts for the labeling. I am sorry for any inconvenience created.

Augustana Swedish Lutheran Church[edit]

I hope you don't mind, I did some geometric corrections on your File:Augustana Sweidsh Lutheran Church NRHP 88002842 Brown County, SD.jpg photo. If you don't agree with the change, just revert it back to your version. Generic1139 (talk) 18:58, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Needed changes are entirely acceptable. Would appreciate to learn of corrections needed. That Site encountered was unplanned and happened to be enrooted. Jon RoanhausJon Roanhaus (talk) 18:32, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Love those South Dakota pix[edit]

Jon,

Thanks for all the pix in SD. There aren't that many folks who get out there from Wikipedia, so we need lots more of your pix. I see from above that I mentioned something similar last year. Well keep up the good work. I also noticed that you're travelled in every county in Pennsylvania. You should take a look at a little project we're doing to get photos of every city, borough, town, and township in Pennsylvania. All 2561 of them. So far we have pix of over 2100 of them. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Nyttend/Pennsylvania for what we need, and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_municipalities_in_Pennsylvania for what we have (not updated for a while). Any help would be appreciated. Smallbones (talk) 13:28, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Smallbones, Thank you for the praise. This was a functional vacation, driving a vehicle purchase from Minnesota to the Seattle area. That would explain the uploads, plus-minus 80 Sites. Love the quest. Jon RoanhausJon Roanhaus (talk) 18:34, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, Chris -

My apologies for the lengthy delay in responding. I appear to have documented the wrong eastern Harding County location. Similar intersection.

Please remove; sorry for the error. More uploads - though not in South Dakota - pending.

Thanks for your reply. I see it is the Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church, Reva, SD Regards Chris06 (talk) 11:37, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Click on the "Move" button next to the search box, and fill out the change request information. I've misnamed a photo or two over the years and had to do it myself. Nice photo though. File:Delaney School.jpg[edit]

Can you confirm the location of this picture? It looks different than (though admittedly a bit similar to) the school located at 6138 Virginia Avenue (street view), as well as the pictures in the nomination form. kennethaw88talk 06:19, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, Kenneth. Thank you for your message. This appears to be my error. The image is of the Lindenwood School, NRHP 0500037i,3518 McCausland Avenue, St. Louis County, Miissouri, USA. My apologies. Jon Roanhaus — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jon Roanhaus (talk • contribs) 15:55, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. With all the pictures you've taken, I'm sure it's very easy to get a few of them mixed up. I've updated the file page and moved the image to reflect the correction. kennethaw88talk 05:15, 1 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,700 people contribute over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. In addition to National Register of Historic Places sites, we welcomed uploads of sites designated by state- and local-level historical institutions and societies. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate Wikipedia articles!

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States! We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret having to narrow it down to just 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other various national contests as they are announced, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 winners.

Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all participants in the United States to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 06:28, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Montana NRHP pic update[edit]

"File:B Street District NRHP 79001408 Park County, MT.jpg" was renamed to "File:Firehall Fitness Center Livingston Montana.jpg"

Hi, thank you for contributing multiple photos of NRHP-listed places in western United States, including in Arizona and at least one in Montana. I have recently been developing Wikipedia articles on NRHPs in Montana including w:B Street District and figured out that your pic titled "B Street District NRHP 79001408 Park County, MT.jpg" showed a building which is not in fact located within that district, so I requested a rename of it. It's still a historic building and I'm glad you contributed the photo. I bet it was the only substantial- and historic-looking building on the street. But for bonus points, it would be great if you could return and take a pic of the four rather nondescript one-story small houses a block or two away at 307-317 B Street, which turn out to be the focus of the NRHP listing. :) I and others have done similarly; for example i uploaded a pic of a modern bridge on re-routed highway, having missed the historic bridge around a bend of a river. Any which way, i hope you keep up your good work! Cheers, --Doncram (talk) 17:45, 9 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You replied "Thank you for your message regarding my image of the B Street Historic District in Livingston, Montana USA. I will endeavor to be more thorough in documenting locations when in the vehicle and on the road. Made an erroneous assumption that B Street in general WAS the historic district. The uploaded image was the most significant view that I saw on said thoroughfare. I fully concur. My error. Regards, Jon Roanhaus KR, Elisa"
Hmm, i get a notification in Wikipedia where I am editing, when a note is added to my Commons talk page, great. Hey, really it was no problem. The difficulty about taking NRHP photos is that what the heck is historical is often not clear. It helps immensely if there is a Wikipedia article about the place which includes, hopefully, the original NRHP registration document, with photos, as a source. This can help us get pics of the right place, and of the most relevant details about the place, too. Currently U.S.-wide we have articles on about half of the NRHP-listed places; I and others keep going at it but it will still take years. By the way I have enjoyed working at creating articles specifically in counties where other persons were about to go on a road trip, including for example for an editor/photographer in the U.S. state of Georgia. If you have future plans, let me know and I will be happy to redirect my attention to where you might go. It is gratifying to get pics added to articles I've worked on. Cheers, --Doncram (talk) 21:29, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Lost Lake Guard Station
Thanks also for your pic recently added to w:Lost Lake Guard Station article which i had created long ago, too! --Doncram (talk) 21:34, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Doncram, Thank you for your message. This endeavor has enriched my life and defines how I want to travel. I would be happy to contribute articles regarding NRHP Sites if appropriate. I have an upcoming long-distance roadtrip that will cover northern Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota. Depending on the outcome of several events, this itinerary will likely include Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. Great Falls[edit]

I see you have been taking photos in western Montana lately. I was wondering if you might be going to be near Great Falls? If so, could you get a photo of St. Ann's Cathedral? It's a contributing property in the en:Great Falls Northside Residential Historic District. I know this is a long shot, but I thought I would ask just the same. Farragutful (talk) 13:03, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wamsley House

Hey you were serious about going on a trip in Montana/Idaho. Thanks for going and getting pic of the en:Other C. Wamsley House, an Octagon mode house in Ravalli County, Montana. I am very happy to return to en:List of octagon houses, a list-article that I and others created back in 2008(!), and add the pic to the long-existing pic-less row for the house there. Keep up your good work! Cheers, --Doncram (talk) 04:34, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, Doncram. Thank you for your message. My travels were for the month of November. I have returned to home base. Great Falls was part of the itinerary, but my visit there was 5 November. My travels included at least 120 NRHP sites, so I have more to post. The Cathedral was not one of the visited Sites. Regards, Jon

Minnesota[edit]

Season's greetings. I notice in the discussion above you had plans to visit Minnesota. Where and when? I'd be happy to help you find or identify any historic places along your route. Jonathunder (talk) 18:34, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, Jonathunder -

My travels for the year have concluded. Minnesota was part of the itinerary, but I have but one site to post in Wilkin County. The state has been well tagged by others. Am always happy to contribute and assist; please let me know what you have in mind.

Regards, Jon Roanhaus — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2601:603:2080:51E:E08C:7706:87FA:607F (talk) 18:50, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings -

I have additional site images for upload, but there appears to be a change or problem with the National Register Of Historic Places page(s). Uploaded images are not showing in the editing phase. One white image shows, but there is nothing in the field that previously showed the default item as site name. Adding this to the field doesn't produce a result.

Recently, I received a notice about a one thousandth edit, almost all of which pertain to the NRHP page. Is that an upper limit.

Sincerely, Jon Roanhaus

I've uploaded more than a thousand images and I don't think there's an upper limit. It's hard to know what's happening. Maybe try again using a different upload form and then add NRHP categories to it. Let me know if that works or you're still having problems. Jonathunder (talk) 20:46, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings - This message relates to recent problems uploading images to Wikipedia from the National Register Of Historic Places page. Problems persist on my home computer and an attempt to upload from another system produces the same result. As a test, I tried uploading the images (Bush House, NRHP 100001597, Snohomish County, WA) through the main upload page. In this case, I was able to see my uploads, but the NRHP number that is usually in the system and the description are missing. Sincerely, Jon Roanhaus

Mount Helena Historic District[edit]

As I was doing category cleanup on recent photos of NRHP sites I came across two of yours identified as being in the Mount Helena Historic District. When I checked the NRHP nomination for that district I noted that it is a park and there are no contributing buildings in the district. I looked at other historic districts in the city and the Helena Historic District has a residential area on the base of Mount Helena. Because it was nominated in the 1970s it's not exactly clear which buildings contribute to the district by looking at the nomination. However, they do appear to be similar in size, age, and location to the houses in the photos that accompany the nomination. As I haven't been to Helena since I was about 10, in the 1970s, I regret I cannot be of any practical assistance.

By the way, I admire your work. Thanks for all of your contributions. Farragutful (talk) 15:56, 13 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Farragutful,

Thank you for your message and your praise. It was unclear to me where the boundaries of the Mount Helena Historic District were situated. I was unable to locate a map of the District or the parameters of a boundary increase. The images submitted seemed to fit the Mount Helena District more than the Helena appellation.

Regards, Jon Roanhaus

There is a map of the district in the Helena Historic District's 1990 amendment found here. It is on the last page. It shows the original district boundaries and what was added and removed from it in the amendment. It appears the residential area is discontiguous from the more commercial area to its southeast. There are also two maps in the 1993 amendment found here. Also on the last page, however, they don't show the entire district.
The two houses photographed are not in the Mount Helena Historic District, but they may not be in the Helena Historic District either. It all depends on their location. Farragutful (talk) 15:51, 14 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Farragutful, Thanks again for providing the detailed information. Based on the documents that I reviewed, the two images that were uploaded by me are inside the exclave showing on the first map that is hyperlinked. The property listing shows the Blackstone Apartments, a block from one of my images. None of this is conclusive. The neighborhood is certainly historic. Your diligence in replying is appreciated. September 30th is the last day to upload photos for Wiki Loves Monuments! We're thrilled that the United States has almost reached 4,000 contributions so far this year. Of these images, ~370 (~9%) have already been used to help illustrate Wikipedia articles and pages on other wiki projects, which is fantastic.

If you've already made a photo contribution this year, thanks so much! If you have any last-minute photos of U.S. historical sites to upload and enter into the contest, today's the day to do it. Check out the United States event page for more information. Judging will take place throughout the month of October, after which the top-ten national finalists will be announced in early November.

If you've traveled and taken photos of monuments in non-US countries, you can see if those countries are also participating here.

As always, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:49, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Jon Roanhaus,

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2019, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 210K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 40 countries around the world.

Please fill in this short survey, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2019.

Kind regards,

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. --Didym (talk) 11:25, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

File:Old Settlers Pavilion NRHP 10000366 Nelson County, ND.jpg[edit]

This photograph of a rural scene in Nelson County, North Dakota appears to be in the location based on the coordinates used on the Wikipedia page for the NRHP properties in Nelson County. However, those coordinates are incorrect. Based on one of the references for the Old Settler's Pavilion the building is in Stump Lake Park to the north of that location. Google Earth confirms its existence. I've corrected the coordinates. You might consider having this file renamed and removing the NRHP info. Farragutful (talk) 02:44, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I tried. Drove the gravel road for twenty minutes attempting to locate the building elsewhere. Am reasonably certain the residents of the local property were curious as to the identity of the interloper. Looked in Pekin first.

Hi there! Kevin from Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States here. I know it's been a tough year for everyone, and I hope this message finds you well.

You are receiving this message as a participant in last year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in the United States. First, a recap: We concluded with over 5,200 great photos of U.S. historical sites made possible by contributors like you. If you haven't yet seen, last year's U.S. winners are viewable here, and the international winners here (including multiple from the United States!).

Second, as you may have seen from the banner notices on Wikipedia, this year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States has been running through October instead of September in consideration of the pandemic and the hectic start of the fall season. Despite the challenges of the year, we're thrilled that the United States has surpassed 5,000 photo contributions so far.

October 31st is the last day to upload photos for the U.S. competition this year. If you've already contributed, thank you so much - and it's great to have you again this year! If you haven't yet contributed but are interested in participating again, you're invited to join us during these last couple days. Check out the United States event page for more information. Remember that you are welcome to upload and submit photos of historic sites that you've taken any time in the past, not just this month.

As always, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 07:20, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2023[edit]

Hello! In 2021, you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Thanks to people like you, it was a great success with over 500 people contributing over 5,500 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. You can see the top-ten winners of the US competition here.

While the United States did not participate in Wiki Loves Monuments in 2022, I'm pleased to say that we're back for 2023 through the month of October! I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our 2023 event page for more information.

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2021, and we hope to see you again in this year's event! If you have any questions, please leave them on the event talk page.

Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 09:12, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
