Birth (maiden) name to married name

I just moved a page on Wikipedia from a woman's birth name to her new married name. Her article uses three Commons files and all three have her maiden name in their titles. Since the titles also contain years during which she was still using her birth name, my gut feeling is to leave them alone. I checked the archives and could find nothing on this. Am I wrong and should the three files be moved?  OUR Wikipedia (not "mine")! Paine  10:01, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

Also just noticed there is a Commons category that uses the subject's birth name. I see no problem renaming the category; however, is it customary in these cases to delete the old category or redirect it?  OUR Wikipedia (not "mine")! Paine  10:27, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

I'd say don't rename the files, and it wouldn't fit any of the file renaming criteria anyway. Redirect the category instead of deleting it, since it's easy to imagine someone searching for the old name, or a link to the category existing somewhere. Uploading Image Files Created by Someone Else

I have two jpeg files I want to upload then insert in a Wikipedia article. They're photos of the subject taken by his father, and I'm sure he's okay with letting them be public domain. Who does he have to notify by email that it's okay for me to upload the files? @Bwisok: Hello, you need to ask permission from the copyright holder (the subject's father) to release their photos under a free license (like CC-BY-SA-4.0). They can do that by sending an email to the OTRS. Thanks, ★ Poké95 03:04, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

Library of Congress images?

Can I upload the photograph of a deceased government official that has been digitized by the Library of Congress (http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/ggb2006005600/ ) and reported by the Library of Congress on its webpage for the image as having "no known restrictions on publication"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RuprechtOfTheRhine (talk • contribs)

Copyright violation?

Hello, this image File:T-90 saa aleppo.jpg is from an strange source, twitter user, facebook link broken or shutted down... I am not sure if this is a copyright violation, can somebody tell? Advising Utah Historical society on how to upload a photo

Hi, I'm advising the Utah Historical society on how to upload this photo to the commons. I've gone over the CC-BY-SA license so they know what they are getting into! They own the copyright of the scan and the photo, which was taken in 1943. Let's assume they're fine with making a 300dpi version of the file free for everyone on the commons. How should they indicate the copyright of a photo when they upload it (i.e., basically that they are publishing it under much laxer license and it's the original copyright holders)? Why do they think that they own the copyright? Was the photo made by a photographer hired by the society? I have grave doubts about this claim. They likely own the physical photo but not the copyright. Ruslik (talk) 20:34, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Copyright Violation

I uploaded a photo (Mike Fleck.jpg) that was just marked as a copyright violation. It is a personal photo (not taken from the web) and is free to use. I can't look at the Commons file, because it's deleted, but the deletion note by the Commons administrator refers to this webpage, where the contents are claimed to be under the copyright of "The Pennsylvania Youth Congress Education Fund". if it's the same photo and if it's in the same resolution, then their claim of copyright benefits from the advantage of chronology, because apparently they published it in 2014, whereas your upload to Commons was in 2016. Given their chronological advantage, the burden then falls upon you to present evidence that the photo is yours. It might be done by showing that you are in possession of the original photograph, for example by uploading to Commons the photo in a better resolution or a less cropped version than the image published on the other website. If the file deleted from Commons was already a better version, you could draw the deleting admin's attention to that fact and ask him if he would accept to restore the file. You could also sort out the situation with The Pennsylvania Youth Congress Education Fund. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:44, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

  • If the logo is copyrighted (which it will be, unless it is very old or very simple) it is not acceptable on Commons without explicit license from the copyright holder. Older wikipedia articles

Hello. In the last couple of days, have i translated a article from english to my language, and i only need the pictures. I just thought i could copy-paste some of the pictures from the english article to mine, as stupid as i am, but the pictures was deleted instantly.

Now to my question. How to i use pictures from other wikipedia articles, in mine article?

  • There is no universal answer to that, because of different restrictions on different images. If the images are hosted here on Commons, then there should never be any problem. However, if they are in the English-language Wikipedia on a "fair use" basis, then they may not be acceptable in other Wikipedias which may each have different policies about "fair use". It would help a lot if you would indicate what article you are talking about and what language you are translating to. - Jmabel ! talk 16:14, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

Danish Wikipedia does not allow direct uploads and instead supports only uploads to Wikimedia Commons, that's why you arrived here. Wikimedia Commons allows only images that are free to use by everyone, for every purpose. Album covers are usually copyrighted and may not be uploaded here. The articles will have to make do without these images. --rimshottalk 21:02, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

all categories removed from file

For example in this file - Ronaldinho y Khedira (5098210694).jpg - users removed all categories. Thus that file can't be found easily. Is that what is intended? Will a bot repair that by marking it uncategorized? --Xykoojy52 (talk) 18:00, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

Thanks a lot! However, in cases like this, no bot seems to mark files as uncategorised and therefore it appears to be necessary that someone has to come across accidentally and categorize it manually. I wonder how many files are without any category.--Xykoojy52 (talk) 06:37, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Came in here by accident, and I do not consider me a football expert. Jmabel, it’s even worse: Compare the given source, and you find, the file was wrong categorized (I fixed this) and, more important, we do not see Ronaldinho and Sami Khedira on this image, but Karim Benzema and Mario Suárez (also fixed in description and categories), cf. this image: File:Ronaldinho and Khedira.jpg. I do not know, how this could happen. Because you are an admin, could you, please, rename the file without redirecting (it was only recently uploaded here)? My suggestion in analogy to the other files in Category:Real Madrid v Atlético Madrid, 7 November 2010 (all got their names from their Flickr title, as far as I see): “Benzema por arriba (5156470194).jpg”. Something odd with the Creator template

A short question: Why does File:Calle de Bruselas de Jorge Letelier Nuñez.jpg appear in Category:Bad use of creator template - option? very strange row of edits related to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Alleppey.jpg, ask for intervention by Wikimedia Commons administratorship

Hi, just remarked that very strange row of edits by User:87.123.63.223 related to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Alleppey.jpg: File:Ad Astra Aero - BFW-M-18-d (CH191).jpg was imho vandalized by the new User:Divyacskn1289 (deletion request) as in fact 'reaction' on two DR started by me yesterday, obviously (see User contributions [1]+[2]) related to File:Alleppey.jpg. User:Divyacskn1289's imho harassment was 'undone' by User:87.123.63.223, but no reverted, commenting Rm deletion template. Adding this template is not what the user wanted to do.

So far, strange but not a serious problem, but then this was also commented on my user talk Fix wrong message; fix misleading header and add text by Divyacskn1289 here, which had been added somewhere on the Support Desk, and next, she/he answered at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Alleppey.jpg, and even closed that DR which was started just 16 hours ago.
Finally, File talk:Alleppey.jpg was created by adding {Kept} one minute later...

Honestly, I don't have any problems that a DR request started by my will denied, but not like that one. I kindly ask for intervention, and to make a "kept" decision by a Wikimedia Commons administrator, thx and kindly regards, Roland zh (talk) 18:51, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

I would not go so far as to claim User:Divyacskn1289 would be a "vandal". I think he is a new user, who does not yet know, what and when to do exactly. Noting this fact himself, he asked for help - if this is, then a fact in favor of User:Divyacskn1289.
Thanks for agreeing that File:Alleppey.jpg should be kept. It is true that in the absence of a deletion reason the file cannot be removed. In my eyes, the whole DR was superfluous, but so be it. --87.123.12.36 20:09, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests is grounds for closure of this deletion request: Deletion requests are not the place to attempt to change Commons policy, nor may requests be made simply to make a point. Any such requests may be speedily closed - this is the rule I implemented. Please use the Village Pump or the policy talk page if you wish to propose a change in policy.

Since no valid reason for deletion has been given, there is no reason to keep this request open. Your try to institute additional requirements for image uploads, which are not backed up by the according rules - at least not by the rules in their current form -, is out of scope to the deletion request. Commons:Deletion requests makes it very clear: Deletion requests are not the place to attempt to change Commons policy. Any such requests may be speedily closed. I do not have a problem granting you the additional six or what it is days, but in the absence of a valid deletion reason I do not see use in leaving the request open. It's not up to you to "not have a problem granting you the additional six days". Some deletions stay open for months while the research is done and an administrator can make a decision. Leaving this image here until the research can be done and a decision made is not a problem, it's a matter of consensus from the community. Also as a Commons user, you do not implement rules. You might reference a guideline or a policy to help the closing administrator, but the rules here are not individually created or enforced. Please be kinder to your fellow volunteers and assume good faith as outlined on COM:AGF. There are over 6,000 images in the backlog for Deletion Nominations, this one will be closed when it gets closed. Excessive admin-shopping and trying to push a WP:POINT, are not advised. Cheers! Portrait Picture paid by my Grandfather

My Grandfather had a picture taken of himself in 1969, picture has been in the family since then, he paid a professional photographer for it who has by now died and whose company or studio no longer exists. I would like to upload it as a replacement of the terrible picture in the current Wikipedia article. While you may feel that the person who paid for a work should have the copyright to it, that is typically not the case. It depends on the jurisdiction, but generally, unless there is a written contract stating that the photograph is a work made for hire, a written employment contract, or a written copyright transfer agreement, the copyright remains with the photographer or their heirs. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:48, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Is this in the U.S.? If so, say so, and someone may be able to sort this out successfully. 1969 is before the U.S. signed the Berne Convention, there might be possibilities there. On the other hand, if the country where the photo was take was a Berne Convention signatory, the unreachable photographer or his/her heirs almost certainly have the rights. - Jmabel ! talk 23:33, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

No, Picture was taken in Spain

I took the picture of the document which is more than 100 years old and owned by a family member, the picture itself was my own work. On the subject of the picture of my grandfather its impossible to locate the heirs of the original author...

Hjälptexterna här verkar mest handla om hur man laddar upp bilder. Hur hittar man begriplig information om hur bilder på Wikimedia Commons får laddas ner och användas? Villkoren är väldigt svåra att förstå när det gäller hur man ska referera till källan, när man måste kontakta upphovspersonen osv. Finns det något exempel någonstans på hur man ska skriva en källhänvisning så att man inte bryter mot villkoren? Vid flera bilder står det t.ex. "You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States." Ska jag då skriva exempelvis PD 1923 I klammerparentes? Men var, i en källförteckning eller i en bildtext? Och vem har glädje av den informationen? Bilden är till en tryckt bok i mindre upplaga. En annan fråga är vad som menas med kommersiell i det här sammanhanget? Ses en bok som kommersiell därför att den säljs, eller är det bara reklam som är kommersiell? Hej Katarinita! Information om användning av innehåll från Commons finns på sidan Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia (som tyvärr ännu inte finns på svenska). I korta drag är allt innehåll på Commons fritt att använda i vilket syfte som helst. Oftast måste man ange vem som skapat verket, ganska ofta måste man ange att verket är fritt tillgängligt under licensen som man själv nyttjar för att kunna använda verket, och ibland måste man även släppa eventuella förändringar man gör av verket under samma licens. Information om vad som gäller finns på respektive filbeskrivningssida (och eventuellt i licenstexter som de länkar till). För verk som är i allmän ägo (public domain) finns i princip inga krav, även om det är god sed att nämna upphovsmannen. Filer som laddas upp granskas inte på något systematiskt vis, så du måste själv säkerställa att vad som anges på filbeskrivningssidan verkar stämma.
Det är inte helt uppenbart, men texten "You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States" riktar sig till den som laddat upp filen till Commons, så förutsatt att verket du vill använda är i allmän ägo i det land där du är verksam kan du lugnt bortse ifrån den texten.
Kommersiell användning är inte alltid väldefinierat i lagstiftningen, men en bok som säljs skulle i de flesta fall ses som kommersiell användning. När det gäller användning och "återanvändning" skulle jag betrakta orden som synonymer. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:40, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Author/upphovsman är och förblir den eller de som har skapat verket ifråga. Upphovsrättsinnehavare är den som innehar upphovsrätten, vilket kan förändras över tid om upphovsrätten överlåts, ärvs eller upphör. Ett fotografi av ett konstverk kan ha flera upphovsmän och/eller flera upphovsrättsinnehavare beroende på det avbildade konstverkets upphovsrättsliga situation, fotografiets originalitet och lokal lagstiftning. —LX (talk, contribs) 10:05, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

My video demonstrates a method to sink 5 feet or less in distance by creating a putting stroke that makes the putter head travel along a straight line. A standard putting stroke introduces curves into the path that the putter head travels on.

I checked with the Rule of Golf, and my method is withing the rules of golf.

After searching the internet, I can find no other mention of a similar method.

I have shared this video already on youtube and have leased my video to the public.

I have no intention of marketing my putting method for short putts.

I have tested this putting method, and it is significantly more accurate than a standard putting stroke.

As I understand it, it was nominated because someone believes wobbly video was an unsuitable format to present a series of pictures and texts (and I tend to agree). That is, they were arguing with the format, not the content. But it's no use discussing it here at the help desk. Photos in Category:Roller coasters at Parc Astérix

Hi. Is it possible to restore some photos which would have been deleted without a proper reason ?
Almost all the categories in Category:Roller coasters at Parc Astérix were emptied by Natuur12 because of DRs launched by Elisfkc. Happily, there had been a previous positive closure to the Goudurix's DR (here), so the outcome of the second DR has been positive too. But concerning the other coasters, some photos depicted only the coaster itself and were not concerned by the lack of FoP in France ; and the categories Tonnerre de Zeus, Le Vol d'Icare, OzIris and Trace du Hourra were emptied without distinction.
Now we have lost all the illustrations for the coasters' articles on WP, is it possible to recover some of them which were free ?
Some of the images are still visible on Google : Tonnerre de Zeus, OzIris, Le Vol d'Icare. If non-free buildings are visible, they are de minimis, and the coasters are utilitarian objects.

If a nail clipper and a tablecloth can have a copyright in France, surely the same applies to a coaster. Nothing has been deleted without a proper reason. Untitled

I am in the USA, I understand how I can take a photograph and release it under CC and thus use it on Wiki. However I perplexed as to how I can possibly use photos of identifiable people, in private settings, (understanding they were being photographed) and yet allow that photography to be used commercially. I would, as I understand, need get a full rights release for those people, which they may not be willing to do. I am however confident I can a rights release if it is released under a CC with commercial use restricted, but not sure if Wiki accepts those. My situation is this, I have a photography of people performing a play, in a public place, but they are regonizable, I don't think there would be any problem using it for editor use with CC, but I don't see how I could use it if it were to be sold commercially. I think we usually want to keep old versions like that around for historical reasons. You should upload the new version as a separate file (assuming it meets the "Freely Licensed" requirement: in my opinion this is {{PD-textlogo}} so it does). Speedy deletion and category “Undelete in …”

How to add speedy deleted files to the suiting undeletion category? The actual reason for asking are three recently deleted images by German photographer Franz Landgraf, cf. Category:Franz Landgraf (photographer), who died in 1953. Hence, these files could be undeleted in 2024 (If I remember correctly the license templates would have to be adapted, though). The files:

What's different about overwrite existing file and upload as a new file?

The original version is File:Taiwan the Province Government Building.JPG. Both the "Author" line and the EXIF show Vegafish as the author, but Fcuk1203 upload a new version of File:臺灣省政府大樓.jpg to overwrite the original version. Because he think that File:Taiwan the Province Government Building.JPG is too bad quality, so new version is of far more better quality. Moreover, the uploader claim he doesn't see what would violate COM:OVERWRITE here. May I ask how this one is different? It is a different photo, so the overwriting by Fcuk1203 in 2013 was contrary to com:overwrite. From what I understand from the logs, you reverted File:Taiwan the Province Government Building.JPG to the photo originally uploaded in 2006 by Vegafish. After a short revert battle, Fcuk1203 left the original photo and uploaded his 2013 photo on a separate page, File:臺灣省政府大樓.jpg. Two years later, in 2015, an administrator removed the photo by Fcuk1203 from the history of the page File:Taiwan the Province Government Building.JPG and copied it to another page, named File:Taiwan Province Government Building.jpg, thus creating a duplicate of File:臺灣省政府大樓.jpg, and left a message on the discussion page of Fcuk1203 about com:overwrite, which may not have been necessary two years after Fcuk1203 had already accepted to place his photo on a separate page. A month later, File:Taiwan Province Government Building.jpg was deleted by another administrator because the photo by Fcuk1203 was already at File:臺灣省政府大樓.jpg. Normally Id be more patient but since Ill be at Wikimania when the one month mark hits, I figure better safe than sorry. (I hope). I sent OTRS a permission letter on behalf of the Museo de Arte Popular, who emailed it to me instead of them, in reference to two videos that they produced in collaboration with Wiki Learning - Tec de Monterrey (Im the coordinator of Wiki Learning). I finally got some corrections done an both videos appear here with this message. The letter was sent 27 May. I just want to be sure there is no problem with the letter and the videos. I uploaded a scanned logo for the GEnie online service, and am having problems picking a copyright for it. It was scanned from an out-of-print magazine (II Alive) for a defunct business. There is a copyright protected photo of the Austrian right-wing extremist Norbert Hofer which is now used in several language versions of Wikipedia - Obviously there is no licence proof in the OTRS-system which clarifies the licence of this photo. Need to delete copyright protected image

Hello, I work for Bio-Rad Laboratories and have been assigned to monitor, edit and update our wikipedia page. The following link leads to a wikicommons image that the company founder and CEO want gone from our page.   • If the copyright has been clearly transferred (written transfer) and you are willing to license it appropriately, yes, you can upload it. Do be clear who the author is, add a clarifying statement in the "Permissions" part of the Information template, and I'd recommend that you send an email as described in COM:OTRS and tag the uploaded file with {{OTRS Pending}} since this is a bit unusual and it would be good to have a clear release on file. - Jmabel ! talk 16:47, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

New version of an audio file doesn't replace the outdated one

Hello, I just uploaded a new (corrected) version of the pronunciation of "Franklin Delano Roosevelt" but my newer version doesn't actually replaces the outdated version (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GT_FDR.ogg). This procedure works always fine with replacing pictures, what am I doing wrong here, I wonder? Copyright claim for something that seems clearly below US Threshold of Originality

Cartridge label here and here claims "Audiovisual concept, label and program (C) 1984 Activision Inc."

Am I correct in assuming that the label design (in this case) falls below the US threshold of originality as a combination of {{Pd-text}} and {{Pd-simple}} and that this claim is invalid?

FWIW, I suspect that this is boilerplate slapped onto every cart regardless of whether or not it was enforceable. I have another Activision cartridge - Kaboom - that has a definitely-copyrightable photo (and as such wasn't photographed for Commons).

  • If it's covered by FOP (not a given and you don't say what country), I would think no problem. A lot of things that are covered by FOP (or de minimis) could theoretically have some derivative work that would not have the same exemption. - Jmabel ! talk 14:01, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
    • It is covered by FoP, as stated in the question. The problem I see is that if one licenses a photo of a stained glass under a licence that permits derivative works, someone could create a graphic work or even a stained glass that uses the same design, which would clearly violate original author’s rights.   • Your friend -- FFA P-16, I assume that is you -- as the copyright-holder, is the one who must grant the license, not you. You can't upload based on vague permission to use the photos, your friend needs to grant a specific license (although you can assist by drafting an email for your friend to send). If in doubt, personally recommend CC-BY-SA as retaining as many rights as are congruent with placing a photo on Commons. Ich habe soeben ein Dokument aus einem behördlichen Vorgang von 1986 hochgeladen, welches ich über das Umweltinformationsgesetz von der NRW-Atomaufsichtsbehörde erhalten habe (THTR-1986-Heske.pdf). Es handelt sich um Details zu einem Störfall im Reaktor THTR-300 vor 30 Jahren. Auf Einsicht in das Dokument hat gemäss UIG jedermann kostenfrei Anspruch. Daher gehe ich davon aus, dass ich es auch verbreiten darf. Ist das richtig ? I'm not exactly sure what the situation is regarding copyright and licenses etc. and I'm confused by the uploading process and the instructions. I have uploaded it, but I was told it may be removed. Thanks for any help you can give.

We don't seem to have any information on what the threshold of originality required for copyright protection in Ireland is, but apparently, typographical arrangements are protected, so I'm afraid we have to err on the side of caution and assume that the logo is protected by copyright. There is no indication at the source site or at http://www.gaa.ie that the copyright holder has published the logo under a free license or released it into the public domain, which means it can't be hosted here. Please understand that grabbing other people's non-free photos from the Internet and pasting them together does not make them your own. Which is the word "四草" is correctly spelled "Sicao" or "Sihcao" in the Wikimedia Commons?

Even in official period, the status of Tongyong Pinyin in Taiwan is quiet different from Hanyu Pinyin in China. The Taiwan (official name:Republic of China) government only uses it as an romanization system of place names. However, there's currently a problem:

It has already been fully replaced with created a new category, and especially the statement of Pbdragonwang on the talk page, because the word is spelled "Sicao" are quoted from an official interpretation of this website. Therefore, he thinks the word "Sicao" is standard spelling of a Chinese name in Hanyu Pinyin, and the word "Sihcao" is spelled incorrectly!

I found some information on this in a Google search here. For guidance in Modern Chinese pinyin as required by 標準地名譯寫準則, 音譯 does not mean "Hanyu Pinyin" or "Tongyong Pinyin", it really means "Pinyin Transcription". That is to say, it means the Taiwanese Mandarin language names have been transcribed from Taiwanese Mandarin to Romanization characters and then into English. I'll let you read pages like en:Transcription (linguistics), en:Romanization of Chinese and en:Chinese language romanization in Taiwan so that you can understand it better.

In the Wikimedia Commons, should it be spelled "Sicao" in Taiwan or "四草" in the official pinyin system of Taiwan with named?--Liji (talk) 14:46, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Randmid 1308853243 boblee 1.jpg

I am not sure how to properly reference the photo of former NFL quarterback Bob Lee that I copies from the Minneapolis Star Tribute.

When I simply searched for Bob Lee NFL Quarterback, the preview on Google showed the correct Wiki page for Bob Lee but a photo of a different Bob Lee from the 1800's so I thought I would add a correct photo of Bob Lee, the former NFL player who attended my alma mater University of the Pacific.
