Old BS DR's

There is a bunch of Bahnstrecke icons in Category:Deletion requests January 2010 that you might want to close. Regards, /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 07:24, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

As you might have noticed I already deleted 40 obsolete BSicons ... axpdeHello! 07:33, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
You seem to have gotten sidetracked (pun intended). Anyway, these cases are very simple, nominations of own work by Wiebvl. And I am informing you, because these DRs are not listed in the deletion logs. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 07:56, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Oh really? Sorry if I sound ironically, but you participated in my admin candidature where Túrelio demured I might be too focussed on BSicons, and on my user page I wrote that I did the most of my contributions here on those.
Telling me to delete some BSicons is the same as telling Lionel Messi to score some goals!
Concerning your apprehensions I might not be aware of those DR ... we have our own system to list all delete candidates! Regards axpdeHello! 16:55, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

To be deleted

All usage is suspended for these icons. Wiebevl (talk) 23:04, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Some of those icons still exist in userspace, e.g. when people are preparing new articles. I hesitate to delete those icons without warning ... hmmm ... axpdeHello! 15:24, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
And a bit tricky to update the userspace indeed, however the deletion requests are at least 2 months old for most of them. Wiebevl (talk) 16:38, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
I don't like to change those userspace trials, code is crappy and some pages probably won't ever get into article namespace. On the other hand, they didn't get any warning ... #sigh# axpdeHello! 16:52, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
Hmmm, File:BSicon vABZlf.svg is still in use, see Special:GlobalUsage/BSicon vABZlf.svg, File:BSicon vABZrg.svg as well, see Special:GlobalUsage/BSicon vABZrg.svg! axpdeHello! 23:07, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
This is strange, because when opening the page and searching the code, they can't be found. Is this caching on pages using templates? Wiebevl (talk) 23:24, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
en:OpenBVE Network West Midlands routes map doesn't even exist anymore! Weird!! axpdeHello! 23:30, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Delinker

Grüße --DieBuche (talk) 19:21, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

22:37, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
#shrug# axpdeHello! 23:03, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Autopatrol

Thanks for upgrading my user rights :-) What can I do with autopatrol? Wiebevl (talk) 19:39, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

I noticed several admins upgrading trusted users so I thought you are experienced enough as well. Please don't ask me what exactly Commons:Patrol does, it seems to differ from our German system: If on de-WP the last edit wasn't (auto-)patrolled, e.g. an IP or a rather new user, you'll get the last patrolled edit when loading that article with a little hint right on top where you can get to latest version. Here on commons I frankly see no difference between a patrolled page and one that isn't ... #shrug#
Autopatrol pretty much says all what it's about, your edits are automatically patrolled. If you want to patrol unpatrolled edits, you might want to consult Commons:Requests for rights there you can apply for rollback as well. axpdeHello! 22:30, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks :-) Wiebevl (talk) 08:17, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

On the occasion of your closing Commons:Deletion requests/Files of User:A. Wagner as delete. The only vote until now was to keep these versions. Do you actually care about consensus at all? /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 22:16, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

All files were tagged to speedy delete. I compared each file with its duplicate, both looked the same so I deleted them. On the very last file the duplicate target was wrong to I checked the regular deletion request:
  • One vote by User:A. Wagner (uploader!) was to delete those JPGs.
  • One vote by User:Trycatch was to delete the jpgs instead.
  • You participated in this DR but didn't vote at all.
In the end it was my decision which one to keep ... 2:1 for the jpgs, which is a consensus even though on a small base! axpdeHello! 22:26, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, if you are quick enough, it's possible to get 2:0 "consensus" in any deletion nomination. Trycatch (talk) 05:36, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
Once again: All picture were tagged speedy delete and I deleted them on the base of Commons:Deletion policy#Speedy deletion! axpdeHello! 10:32, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
  • "smaller in size but same quality (visual inspection)" JPEG is a lossy format, how do you think it's possible to compress an existing JPEG image to 30%-50% of original size without any loss in quality? Enlarge the images and you'll see that quality, in fact, differs drastically. Trycatch (talk) 05:36, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
Both sets of files had been uploaded by the same user, who explicitely asked to remove the JPG ones. I compared both at a readable size and I could read both scans! That's why I deleted as requested by the uploader! axpdeHello! 10:32, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Axpde: I had participated to ask what duplicates A.Wagner was referring to. I had not yet compared these files, but I assumed that Trycatch was right, because A.Wagner did not contest his observation. Policy is to allow at least e week for discussion. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 06:38, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
And a third time: All picture were tagged speedy delete and I deleted them on the base of Commons:Deletion policy#Speedy deletion! axpdeHello! 10:32, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
I hope that we talking about the problem (deletion of higher quality scans), not about wikilawyering stuff. Trycatch (talk) 06:38, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
As said before all jpgs are clearly readable, so I deleted as requested by the uploader. axpdeHello! 06:42, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
They are readable, but considerable lower quality: Q=50 instead of Q=90. At the same time Help:Scanning#PNG vs. JPEG recommends to "don't go under 85 or so (and keep it between 95-99 unless file size issues force you to go lower)". I've invited the uploader: User talk:A. Wagner#Commons:Deletion requests/Files of User:A. Wagner.. Trycatch (talk) 07:01, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Hmmm, unfortunaly jpegs only tell their sizes but not their qualities. And even at full size (1.965×2.595) the file looks fine ... that's why I don't understand what we are talking about at this place! axpdeHello! 07:08, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
I've used jpegdump tool (www.programmersheaven.com/download/15260/download.aspx) to get compression quality information. It's very old, and works only with short file names, but works fine. "And even at full size (1.965×2.595) the file looks fine": Magnify and you'll see numerous annoying JPEG artifacts, including blocking and ringing: [1]. Trycatch (talk) 08:07, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

I beg your pardon for the problems with my deletion requests. The reason for this is the requierement of an unitary extension of .jpg, because the majority of the files of the category Deutsches Reichsgesetzblatt 1874 have this extension. The extension .JPG is the an result of an error of my PC. I have changed this files with the extension .JPG in .jpg only in the name of the file and uploaded the same files with .jpg at the second time. This is the reason for the deletion request for the duplicate files with .JPG and i have to thank for the deletion. Greetings from Saxony from --A. Wagner (talk) 10:51, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

--The Evil IP address (talk) 22:03, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Did I hear CommonsDelinker won't process BSicons? There's massive requests on the talk page, mostly from me and another user, regarding those types of files. If not, why waste time adding them, plus the renaming job of BSicons would have been done ;). ZooFari 01:42, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I doubt it would process them - it likely works via finding File: or File: prefixes on pages. -mattbuck (Talk) 02:20, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Most occurances of BSicons are within {{BS}}-templates, instead of File:BSicon STR.svg you'll find {{BS|STR|...}} – so CD won't find the link to the icon. Therefore I'm doing those substitutions by "hand" or to be more precise by help of the filter proxy proxomitron. Regards axpdeHello! 18:01, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

File:Sudoku Logikmuster A.jpg gelöscht

"(Lösch-Logbuch) . . Axpde (Diskussion | Beiträge) hat „File:Sudoku Logikmuster A.jpg“ gelöscht (Exact or scaled down duplicate: File:Logicmuster A.svg)"

Viele Grüße --Saibo (Δ) 02:19, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Hallo Saibo,
06:05, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

There are some of "pre verbalised" templates. They can be found here. Well, I think the user needs to know how long he/she is blocked but this can easily inserted in one of the "blocked"-templates. --High Contrast (talk) 15:27, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Batch deletions of replaced, delinked unused images.

First, thanks for granting me renaming rights for my uploads. It really helps dyslexics like myself. :-). I also replaced all the poor quality images in the first volume, and I am facing the task of deleting the old de-linked and unused images. I created a list of images to be deleted and posted this in the talk page of the volume HERE. Is there a way to eliminated these, and future volumes' discards in batch mode? I am looking at a total of about 1,000 images to be replaced. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Ineuw talk page on en.ws 17:43, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

First of all, I prefer renaming files rather than uploading a new file and deleting the old one. It's no problem to replace the old file with a better scan as long as the content is exactly the same. And that's why I declined to speedy delete the old file with the textline below because this line is missing in the new version. You should rather use regular deletion request, I'd like to hear some other votes before I delete a picture I'm not familiar with ... same with multiple deletes, you may want to place a Mass deletion request! But as said before, I'd prefer replacing the old file (plus renaming if applicable). axpdeHello! 18:37, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. FYI, the images were not only renamed but they were also grayscaled and cleaned up. Otherwise they are identical. To this end, I created a table of the old and new file name relationships to demonstrate. Also, there are no other pages in the wiki universe that use these images, other than the Wikisource project and there will be no other votes, other than my own. I will also explore the mass delete request as you suggested.Ineuw talk page on en.ws 23:52, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
Sad enough if you're the only one interested in this topic :( It's just that some text lines are cropped as well and I don't want to judge whether this line might be of interest later on ... The table you mentioned above will be a good start for the mass deletion request and if you manage to asure us, that we don't lose information by deleting the old versions, it will be so ... Regards axpdeHello! 07:00, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Cropping of the texts were made at the suggestion of other editors (some of whom are also Wikisource administrators), and have a better sense for aesthetics than yours truly. The texts appeared twice because they were also proofread and inserted below the images, so there was a duplication. Initially, being unsure, I kept it for identification, but it was unnecessary because like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Please see HERE and HERE.

As of this writing, I also completed the upload of the volume 2 replacement images, and after re-linking is completed, I will place the image comparison table on the category talk page. Thanks.Ineuw talk page on en.ws 14:18, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

What do you talk about "a better sense for aesthetics"?!? That's not the topic! axpdeHello! 19:25, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

I am not sure what you mean, but the first set of images were my first attempt. They were extracted from the .djvu files and the yellow of the images were not pleasing to anyone. The new images are from the original Internet Archives .jp2 files and the resolution is much higher quality and grayscaled.Ineuw talk page on en.ws 00:55, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

You said: "... other editors ... have a better sense for aesthetics than yours truly." With this you alleged that I have no sense for aesthetics although I already said background color is not the topic!!! I criticise the cropped text lines!!! axpdeHello! 15:31, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Apology for my unclear response. I meant editors (proofreaders) at Wikisource, not you. "Yours truly" is an old style reference to myself. After all I am proofreading text of 19th life! Also, I am a lot older than you think I am. :-) Sorry again. Ineuw talk page on en.ws 18:39, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

k-type BSicons

I checked all k-type icons in the obsolete category and they have been replaced by new ones. Therefore I relocated them to the delete candidate category. Deleting replaced images

Hi Axpde. I completed the upload of new, clear images to replace my original yellowed uploads of the Wikisource Popular Science Monthly project. To help identification, I created tables in the category talk pages of Volumes 1 to 10 (There were only 10 volumes with such images.) for the images to be deleted like here: Category talk:Popular Science Monthly illustrations/Volume 1.

Could you please advise what is needed to have the old images deleted, because this would help me identify any omissions. Thanks in advance.Ineuw talk page on en.ws 15:21, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

First of all: Impressive work, congratulations!
Especially the sophisticated file names!
Many pictures are identical (aside the whitened background), so there shouldn't be any problem. But many other pictures are cropped, i.e. the text line(s) are gone, thus the pictures are not "identical". I don't feel experienced enough to judge whether those captions should be kept or not, so I suggest to start a Mass deletion request with a link to those category talk pages, main concern:
“Are those new pictures allowed to be regarded as "identical" (and thus the old ones be deleted) or not?”

Also, you're right, may be I must choose other words in such comment, but I was in the middle of (by moments) a hard discussion, and freaking out about such edition. Sometimes at the climax of a crosstalk it costs quite an effort to stay calm and keep an objective view, I've been into this several times. But usually it pays back to pause for a moment, breath deeply and then write something you'd agree with even if not (emotionally) involved.
It's hard to talk about a topic causing emotions rise high. At our student(!) parliament in Duisburg we had a leftist party that broke into three fractions on the question whom to support, the Israelites or the Palestinians ... although it's not up to a student parliament to discuss those topics!
My suggestion: Omit all emotions, try to stay calm and talk matter-of-fact ... Regards axpdeHello! 17:03, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Activity

The activity for the last quarter is revealing isn't it! (I try and get "all time" but it often fails). There are so many with maybe 10 actions of less. Regards --Herby talk thyme 17:25, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Well, I'm admin for some three months and my "admin actions count" is far beyond 2000. 10 admin actions is ridiculous, I'd need at most a quarter of an hour to get those ... with a tea break in between ;-) I really can't understand why people get upset about it. Maybe it's all about the "status" ... Regards axpdeHello! 17:37, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
That is certainly the way it looks to me. (& I would agree with the actions in quarter of an hour - not sure if I can manage a tea break too - I must be slower than you...:)) --Herby talk thyme 17:56, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, my computer is rather lame, but some of our top scorers delete about five files per minute! :-O And my tea breaks are quite short since I don't like tea ;-)) axpdeHello! 18:10, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Unterkats

Hallo Axpde.

17:32, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Cleaning up of duplicates

Hi Axpde. I am cleaning up duplicate images of Category:Charles Lyell and I found 3 identical images. Two were my uploads of the Wikisource Category:Popular Science Monthly illustrations from two separate volumes File:PSM V01 D242 Charles Lyell.jpg and File:PSM V20 D610 Charles Lyell.jpg from which I selected the better image and renamed it File:PSM V01 D242 and V20 D610 Charles Lyell.jpg and updated their respective links.

The third image is identical, and the poorest quality of the three File:Bolton-lyell.jpg. I would like to replace all links that reference this image with mine from the PSM project. Am I permitted to do this?Ineuw talk page on en.ws 22:31, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Deleted the first file (identical, but poor quality). The last one is a little bit different, showing his name; personally I like this file better than the cropped and sharpened version. Why not keep both files? axpdeHello! 12:57, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. Absolutely keep both images. I thought that this was Commons policy not to keep duplicates, and I am just a neat guy. :-) My question was in general as well, whether I am permitted, as a user, to redirect images in other Wikis to my copy, since the "Charles Lyell" name appears there separately below the images. The reason is the shameless promotion of the Wikisource:WikiProject Popular Science Monthly since it's a huge project (~80,000 pages, ~15-20,000 images), and will take years to complete, and additional or an occasional interested proofreader is welcome.Ineuw talk page on en.ws 14:43, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi,

I've processed all the BS icons rename requests, where target file doesn't exist. The remaining files yet to nename are here.

Could you check your rename request for File:BSicon DSTr2o.svg, as the target file already exists? --Dereckson (talk) 07:27, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Image transfer page category selection bug

Hi. There is a problem with the upload page category selection of THIS PAGE.

  1. If I select a single category, when I return to the page after an upload, everything I specified is there and this speeds up consequent uploads of related images.
  2. If I select more than one category, as it's sometimes necessary, when I return to the page after uploading an image, the information is wiped out and must re-type everything.
  3. If I paste the 2nd category in the data window, instead of using additional category selection option, then the category stays there hidden, unnoticed, and is applied to future unrelated uploads.

What I would like to know if I am doing something wrong? I tried several different upload forms and each have their own quirks. This is the best and most suitable for the type of image uploads I do (~4,000). I don't wish to take up your time and rather seek your help in pointing me to the proper group/person where I can report such anomalies as well as interested in providing some input on improvements, based on my experience as a constant daily user.--Ineuw talk page on en.ws 18:40, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Hallo! Weißt Du was davon?

12:44, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Renaming of railway icons

Hello, Axpde. You have asked for several railway icons to be renamed, but are not sure what the new names should be. In the future, I suggest that you ask Wiebevl to do the renaming for you, since he seems to know a lot about this subject. Thanks! — Cheers, JackLee talk 17:33, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

You seem to be pretty new in this topic and have forgot to do your homework. Let me give you a hint:
About 1500 BSicons are uploaded and named by myself. I spent uncountable hours to set up a consistent naming scheme, but of course had not enough time to care for all BSicons.
My fellow collegue User:Wiebevl carried the naming scheme over to parallel railways, so I don't want to interfere, cause IMHO there should be only one in charge of naming for a certain class of files. axpdeHello! 13:23, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
Um, I'm not trying to be rude. I just mean that you might be able to get the icons renamed faster if you refer them directly to Wiebevl. If you just tag them for renaming but don't specify new names, then there's not much filemovers like me can do with the files. — Cheers, JackLee talk 16:00, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

filemover request

Hello Axpde! I saw that you refused my filemover request because I was a "sock puppet" in German Wikipedia. My main Account on de.wikipedia is Felix König, and Felix Koenig is my second account for unsecure internet access. That shouldn't be a problem for getting filemover rights here on Commons. For Commons I used Felix Koenig because the German letter ö is a bit difficult for the other users... Maybe you rethink your decision.

Naja, egal. Gruß an alle axpdeHello! 18:08, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

This icon swap http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:BSicon_CONTl.svg&action=history breaks thousands of articles (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:WhatLinksHere/File:BSicon_CONTl.svg) through its wikpedia version, and the change doesn't show up on watchlists...

eg this is the typical effect on http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Hull_%26_Barnsley_Railway&oldid=371684819

Can you revert it? Is there a simple fix?? Thanks.Sf5xeplus (talk) 20:21, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

I appreciate your oversight in catching my Category: errors etc., but I have to question your renaming of the --WSLlle icon. Besides not making allowances for the rest of the family (loop centered and to the right of the line, through track), it seems to be opposite to the R/L convention where the PoV is at the top of the page (screen) and looking down (so when viewing the completed RDT, an --XXXr icon is to the left of the main line, and an --XXXl icon is to the right of the main line). I am working on completing the full set, so this should be resolved promptly (and Route diagram template/Catalog of pictograms/junctions#Loops updated accordingly). Useddenim (talk) 21:41, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, consistent naming does not mean to invent a name and then make a suffix out of it, but first look at the valid suffixes and then think about a valid name. Meanwhile I created and uploaded a complete set of 112 consistently named BSicons. axpdeHello! 23:27, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for finishing up the set of LOOP WSL icons. However, I am confused about l/+l/r/+r suffixes. When did that start? And where is it documented? If that's going to be the new standard, then make sure people know about it. I tried to follow the naming pattern of the existing WSL icons when I began adding the left- and right-side icons. Useddenim (talk) 14:53, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
It started September 2006 with the first BSicons created by User:Bernina, e.g. File:BSicon ABZlf.svg and File:BSicon ABZrf.svg were named facing top to bottom. When the German project was moved to commons many user didn't read/disobeyed/ignored the Commons:Icons for railway descriptions/Policies.
I started in August 2008 to adjust the errors made meanwhile, so this topic has been discussed at so many different places that I'm quite astonished that you claim you haven't noticed yet ... axpdeHello! 15:19, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Well, choose one or the other. I have beem trying to folow the original l/r convention, as
i) there seem to be more icon sets that follow it; and
ii) Wikipedia:Route diagram template/Catalog of pictograms still specifies l & r, with no mention of the "new" + convention.
(And there's a problem when something is discussed in to many places: noone sees the entire thread. Perhaps you want to gather them all up into one spot, and then try to get some overall consensus?) Useddenim (talk) 17:14, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
When I created my first BSicons back in 2007 I soon realized that the system with "f" and "g" (facing "f"orward or opposin"g") is very limited, esp. when dealing with icons facing across. That's why we introduced the "+"-suffix in the sense of "coming from", which is by now used with most sets of BSicons aside the oldest and most used ones as ABZlf. I would have exchanged them too, but just have a look at Category:Icons for railway descriptions/obsolete and Category:Icons for railway descriptions/obsolete redirect to see my schedule :(
And you're damn right, the central page Commons:Icons for railway descriptions hasn't been updated since the day it was ported from German WP ... axpdeHello! 19:20, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
One thing that I find useful for determining the l & r thing is to consider it not from "driving direction', but using the top of the page as the PoV.
And yes, there is some mention of using + to try and help clarify directions, but no good explanation (at least, in English) anywhere that I could find quickly. (Admittedly, I haven't searched all the archives...) 20:31, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
