In your opposition to my deletion request of File:Thule AB, Greenland, you say

I totally oppose this deletion request. Metadata has been automatically imported from Flickr. Of course it's the same as the one posted on DVIDS. Why the US Air Force would put a different metadata on Flickr and DVIDS? And why should the media would be deleted for such a reason ? Did you compare the image on Commons with the original image with that metadata that I cited? The metadata was copied from DVIDS, but the photo itself was not. Surely it is not honest to apply the wrong metadata to an image. And by the way, I would appreciate it if you would remain civil, and not characterize my deletion request as "not honest" just because you didn't understand it. --Macrakis (talk) 20:59, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

I remained civil. You started to use the term "dishonest" with the picture I uploaded, and opted for the nuclear option of deleting the file before any discussion, just because some US Air Force employees copy-pasted the same description for many pictures of the Thule Air Base photo set. It's not this particular picture but a set of many photographs. Just because some legends are the same between several pictures are not a valid reason to delete a file. I don't know why you think to use the same text between several related pictures is a crime? If you are really so upset with this small thing, why don't you just fix the legend instead of trying to delete my files? You're right, I don't understand you. vip (talk) 21:10, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
I characterized the metadata as dishonest, not you; I have no idea what the motivations of the original uploader were -- it could perfectly well be an innocent mistake. In any case, I don't see the value of a file with incorrect metadata. I can't fix the legend because I don't know what that picture actually is. The legend is not dishonest, just incomplete. The photo has been taken during the visit of General Raymond at Thule Air Base, he's simply not appearing in this particular picture. I still don't see why the fact that an U.S. Air Force employee used the same legend on DVIDS and Flickr for several photos of this album bothers you so much. Of course you can fix the legend by yourself: just take a look at all pictures of the visit of General Raymond to Thule Air Base and describe what you see on them when details need to be added. I made the effort of categorizing all pictures of this visit in the same category, so it is really easy and require no particular knowledge. One thing troubles me though: are you really implying that you are wiling to delete all files uploaded to Wikimedia Commons when a legend is not complete enough for your taste instead of fixing them? It sounds overkill and contrary to the objectives of a collaborative way to improve the contents hosted here. Please don't forget that the categories are OK and not everyone is bothered so much about legends lacking some specific details. vip (talk) 20:08, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi Don. I saw you added ESA's World Fire Atlas to the Spacemedia page. I was wondering where on the site it was indicated that these were released under a free license? Hi! I discovered Sentinel-3 World Fire Atlas Prototype after the automatic import of File:Fire hotspots detected by Sentinel-3 World Fire Atlas Prototype ESA22215822.gif released by ESA yesterday. I think it is released under typical Copernicus/Sentinel licence, but you're right is not explicitely stated. Only thing I can find is https://s3worldfireatlas.esa.int/archive stating "Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data processed by ESA on ONDA Copernicus DIAS.". I'll try to reach due@esa.int to see if they can clarify the license. vip (talk) 14:52, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I considered the standard Copernicus license, but the "modified" portion is what concerns me, because they could take that data, change the product, and potentially declare their end-result as being fully copyrighted. — Huntster (t @ c) 16:00, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
I'm not concerned so much about the "Modified" part. It just means it's not pure raw data, it's seen very often in ESA publications as soon as a legend or annotations are added. But in this case, the image is generated by two algorithms linked to a scientific publication, so there could be theorically additional restrictions. Let's see what their answer is. The release of US wildfires image make me hope that no such restriction exists. vip (talk) 16:53, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

Wow, that's a shame. It's so strange to me how organisations go through these cycles: slowly releasing more and more media, then releasing them under free licenses, then suddenly shrinking or eliminating their media databases, only to later start the cycle over again. Or some variation on that. I've seen it with NASA, with ESA, with SpaceX, and numerous others. I wish I could understand their mindsets. — Huntster (t @ c) 01:56, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
When the organization hasn't an open policy by default, these kind of projects often rely on initiatives led by a few people only (sometimes only 1 person). When these people move on another project, the old projects die / disappear in the unknown. I've seen this many times. Right now I'm in discussion with CNES (French space agency) to change the default policy to be open, at highest hierarchy level. La figure sur le déclin d'orbite est illisible

Concerne la figure Fichier:2021-035B CZ-5B R-B decay.svg Illustrant la section: fr:Longue_Marche_5#Second_vol_de_la_version_5B_(29_avril_2021)

@Don-vip: Merci pour votre figure sur le déclin d'orbite. Pourriez-vous l'améliorer pour la rendre lisible. Je ne vois de prime abord qu'un rectangle gris et quelques lignes blanches horizontales et verticales et il m'a fallu zoomer pour discerner les deux courbes en couleur. Elles sont beaucoup trop fines et sont invisibles à l'écran. Quelle est la différence entre la courbe bleue et la rouge ? Cela devrait être aussi clairement indiqué directement sur la figure ou dans sa légende. Voir également les remarques ci-dessous. N'hésitez pas à utiliser des traits nettement plus gras et un fond blanc ou transparent et à augmenter la taille des caractères sur les axes x et y. Second vol de la version 5B (29 avril 2021)

Serait-il possible de la modifier en augmentant la grosseur des traits et en supprimant le fond gris sombre qui la rend illisible. Sinon, cette figure réduite au format de vignette apparaît seulement comme un rectangle gris sans information discernable. Merci pour l'amélioration. @Don-vip: Oui, c'est nettement plus lisible comme cela avec un fond blanc. S'il était possible d'encore un peu grossir les courbes rouge et bleue en visant la taille vignette comme aperçu final, un peu comme on le fait pour une publication, ce serait parfait. Salut vip. Je me suis permis de faire un revert de ta modification sur Category:Joe Biden with politicians of Mongolia. En effet, Biden peut rencontrer des politiciens mongols aux Etats-Unis. La catégorie initiale me paraît mieux adaptée. Toutes les autres catégories "Joe Biden with politicians of ..." suivent le même modèle. Cordialement. Le concours Wiki Loves Monuments France est ouvert pour une semaine encore, jusqu'au 30 septembre. Déjà plus de 6 000 photos ont été importées cette année alors vous aussi rejoignez le concours ! Cette campagne de contribution concerne tous les monuments et objets mobiliers présents dans la base Mérimée et dans la base Palissy. De l'imposant château aux ruines industrielles, de la verrière décorative au reliquaire, c'est un impressionnant patrimoine qui attend d'être photographié et documenté. Vous pouvez dès à présent mettre en ligne autant de photos que vous le souhaitez de ces monuments et objets du patrimoine français. Nous attendons vos photos avec impatience !

Les plus belles photos seront sélectionnées par un jury national composé d'amateurs et de professionnels, de contributeurs à Wikimedia Commons et d'acteurs du patrimoine. Un jury international constituera ensuite une sélection des meilleures photographies mondiales.

Si vous avez des questions, l'équipe organisatrice se fera un plaisir d'y répondre.
