File:University-of-Pittsburgh-Seal-2020.svg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

@Connormah, these logos were uploaded by the university for the sole purpose of being used. You can see them all here available for public use and upload. https://www.brand.pitt.edu/visual-identity/unit-formal-marks Richinstead (talk) 13:53, 10 February 2020 (UTC) Richinstead (talk) 13:55, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Notification about possible deletion[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

I simply replaced the outdated logos that were there. Why were those official logos allowed to be upload then? Those logos came from the same site, The university just outdated the files in 2019 and made them available for public use. We should offer the most updated information possible. That's all that I'm doing. Please explain why this user was able to upload the CMU seal from the brand standards: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Carnegie_Mellon_University_seal.svg. The University of Pittsburgh has given permission to use (not modify) the logos and can be reached here 412-624-4147 | ucomm@pitt.edu. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Richinstead (talk • contribs) 19:03, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- The difference has to do with copyright law. Simple shapes like letters and typefaces are not copyrightable under US copyright law. Therefore wordmarks, such as the previous logos or "Pitt" are not copyrightable although they can serve as trademarks. The new logos with the crest rise to the level of copyright protection because the crest meets the threshold of originality because, to put it simply, it represents something other than a simple shape (see Copyright law in the US). Therefore, the university has to either release this image to the public domain (meaning give up all claims of copyright, which it will not do) or proper rationale must be ascribed for the use such copyrighted non-free media (see fair use). Proper rationale is not "the copyright owner says it is ok". The burden is on the uploader to justify the inclusion of non-free media, and how that should not jeopardize the policies (such as all material on Wikipedia is free) and legal standing of Wikipedia, not the other way around. See your own example of non-free rationale used for the CMU seal. Crazypaco (talk) 05:48, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Deleted content[edit]
File:University-of-Pittsburgh-at-Greensburg.svg
- use in any work, regardless of content
- creation of derivative works
- commercial use
- free distribution
See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions. And also:
