Extracting images from pdf files[edit]

Hi Clay,

You can extract images from pdf files with LibreOffice Draw. A right click on it > Save and it'll save it in the original format and size. The RedBurn (talk) 19:01, 11 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

File:Alondra Nelson, OSTP Acting Director.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Red links[edit]

It's not usually useful to replace a category that exists with one that doesn't. Are you planning to create this category? If so, fine, please do so. If not, then this change should be reverted. - Jmabel ! talk 16:18, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I am planning to create it. I have been creating these categories over the last two days and plan to continue for a few more. Clay (talk) 16:20, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

From, of, and in have different meanings[edit]

In this edit which you describe as "updating", instead radically changes the meaning of the category and makes much of the media in the category falsely categorized. I strongly object. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 15:32, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Infrogmation: I disagree with of/from being functionally different on Commons because that is just not the case on Commons in my experience. I can tell you have some strong feelings about it though, so the category Category:Writers of New Orleans can continue to be the only writers category with an "of" instead of "from" in the title, if you wish. Bad categories[edit]

Fix it, please. Wieralee (talk) 23:08, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Got them! Thanks for catching those! Clay (talk) 23:17, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) While we're on this subject, is there a good reason why you've created so many categories in haphazard fashion AND failed to properly populate them? On the former, you're removing categories from files which were relevant to the file and not the newly-created category. Also, in case you don't follow discussions in project space, there was a recent discussion confirming that single-item categories with a poor chance of expansion are not a net positive, yet here you are creating exactly that left and right. On the latter, I've already reached my limit of desiring to follow behind you and populate categories after witnessing the pace you're setting creating those categories. Once again, be aware of a recent discussion in project space. Commons uses the same software / interface as Wikidata and Wikipedia. That's where the similarities end. Commons is not bound to mimic their conventions. Looking over your contributions, I question whether you understand this.RadioKAOS (talk) 03:21, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@RadioKAOS Well, hello to you too! Since your rant goes over quite a few points, I will separate my response out a bit:
  • I don't agree that my creation of categories is haphazard. I initially created some judge categories, and recently have gone back through and created some of the red-linked categories that are most likely to be populated by other categories/files, e.g. "People of", "Politicians of", "Military people of", and "Lawyers from" categories.
  • You seem to be applying your own set of rules in place of the actual Commons guidelines, and may need to read some discussions yourself. See the (still ongoing) village pump discussion that brings up most of the same issues you have listed. In that discussion people have stressed multiple times that there is no consensus or guidelines as to these points.
  • You are correct in that I have caught myself moving some file-specific categories from a file to a category where it is inappropriate, but I like to think I have paid more attention to that recently and made better decisions on which categories stay on a file and which can be transferred to the encompassing category's level. Please give me examples if I have done this incorrectly by your standards.
  • Your desire (or not) to follow behind me is none of my concern. It sounds like you could have saved yourself some time and effort by communicating these perceived issues sooner, however.
