Bot Help

I would like to recategorize all the image files currently in Category:Cities in Idaho to Category:Location maps of cities in Idaho. I've been doing this by hand in other city state pages. There are also many similar pages that need this treatment.

Can you do this ? Is this appropriate to ask ? Many thanks! -- Mrrxx 18:42, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Sure, please give me a list of "from" and "to" so I can do it for you. Request above is running. Cheers! Siebrand 19:52, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
✓ Done Siebrand 20:15, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
That was great! OK then, here's a list. I'm leaving off Arizona until later, otherwise this should be every US state that needs this automated treatment.
COMap*.* from Category:Cities in Colorado, move to Category:Location maps of cities in Colorado.
NMMap*.* from Category:Cities in New Mexico, move to Category:Locator maps of cities in New Mexico.
KSMap*.* from Category:Cities in Kansas, move to Category:Location maps of cities in Kansas
NEMap*.* from Category:Cities in Nebraska, move to Category:Locator maps of cities in Nebraska
NDMap*.* from Category:Cities in North Dakota, move to Category:Location maps of cities in North Dakota
MNMap*.* from Category:Cities in Minnesota, move to Category:Location maps of cities in Minnesota
OHMap*.* from Category:Cities in Ohio, move to Category:Locator maps of cities in Ohio
NCMap*.* from Category:Cities in North Carolina, move to Category:Locator maps of cities in North Carolina
LAMap*.* from Category:Cities in Louisiana, move to Category:Location maps of cities in Louisiana
MIMap*.* from Category:Cities in Michigan, move to Category:Location maps of cities in Michigan
KYMap*.* from Category:Cities in Kentucky, move to Category:Location maps of cities in Kentucky
IAMap*.* from Category:Cities in Iowa, move to Category:Location maps of cities in Iowa
GAMap*.* from Category:Cities in Georgia (U.S. state), move to Category:Location maps of cities in Georgia (U.S. state)
FLMap*.* from Category:Cities in Florida, move to Category:Location maps of cities in Florida
ARMap*.* from Category:Cities in Arkansas, move to Category:Location maps of cities in Arkansas
AKMap*.* from Category:Cities in Alaska, move to Category:Location maps of cities in Alaska
ALMap*.* from Category:Cities in Alabama, move to Category:Location maps of cities in Alabama
Note that there's some inconsistency (Locator and Location) in the category names that needs to be worked out, I'd rather not bother myself though. Thanks ! -- Mrrxx 21:04, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Wikimedia logo mosaic images deleted

Hi, please see Talk:Wikimedia_logo_mosaic#Broken_-_and_I_can.27t_fix_it.21... one or more images deleted by you are used in the mosaic. Would you please consider finding suitable replacements for them? Right now the mosaic looks not so good. ( see also STOP!!!! DO NOT DELETE THIS IMAGE TILL YOU REPLACE IT IN THE WIKIMEDIA LOGO MOSAIC which has some further hints ... did that file come up when you checked for links?) Thanks! ++Lar: t/c 03:35, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

I usually do not see links when deleting unknowns because I use BadOldOnes. That tool only shows usage numbers per wiki/namespace. I'll take a look at it later to see if I can help out. I'm not that good at graphical design, though, so I have no idea if I can find asuitable candidate. Cheers! Siebrand 05:28, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

OK. Please add that to the copyright information as this is *extremely relevant* information. Please also upload versions if possible in a higher resolution and without any overlay text. The overlay text completely ruins the image... Cheers! Siebrand 08:54, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Advice 'convert fonts to paths'

That doesn't seem like good advice in general to me -- only when MediaWiki doesn't have the right fonts installed to render the text correctly and/or specific SVg markup bugs. Since the big advantage with SVGs is their ability to be easily edited, converting fonts to paths massively reduces the ease of editability.

ps - {{Donotworry}} - heh :)

--pfctdayelise (说什么?) 09:13, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Almost all SVGs containing text fail somewhere. Fonts suck, unfortunately. They're your worst nightmare if you have some experience in publishing... :( Siebrand 09:20, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
I change it to a reference to supported fonts on meta (Meta:SVG fonts). Cheers! Siebrand 09:23, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Yes I do understand - still amazes me that folk on en wp consider they have a "high" edit count when you look at some of our deletion counts (equally "active" admins here get far more action that most en wp ones probably). More generally Vasiliev is working on putting a link to users and highlighting low ones - combination of that & Bryan's should at least mean we are able to look at "activity" better again - cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:45, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I uploaded that image here while "moving" a brunch of them from es:. What do you think of this date-stamped image ?

Hi, I asked in the Village Pump http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Date-stamped_images about date stamps and was encouraged to upload images. Still. I'm unsure. I have uploaded a single image Image:2000_0820_TowncenterDrive2.jpg and am still stressing about the use of these images. I didn't like the idea of cropping the date out, and I don't know how to retouch away the date stamp.

Then I noticed the backlog of category Category:Images with watermarks is already three months or more. It'll take forever for me to find out how it's dealt with.

I'm stressing because I have hundreds of images that are candidates for upload, all with this stamp on them. Should I tag as watermarked? Should I crop even if that's bad for the image? Should I just ignore the date and go on with life? Thanks for your opinion ! -- Mrrxx 18:14, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

If they are ready for immediate use in a project: please do upload them. Add {{Watermark}} and they will, indeed eventually, be dealt with. Something is better than nothing; retouching is possible most of the times. After that, disable the datestamp for your camera. Better even: hack the software so it will never return ;) Cheers! Siebrand 18:17, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Deletion of image Image:HoraIsraeliDance.jpg

You wrote that I had not provided sufficient source or copyright information for this picture.

The picture already exists in the Hebrew version of the Wikipedia at

http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%AA%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%A0%D7%94:Horah.jpg

with the title Hora.jpg. All the source and copyright information is written there in Hebrew.

I copied a translation of the source and copyright information to my Commons copy (I would have linked directly to the picture in the Hebrew version, but couldn't figure out how to do it). Here is (approximately) what I wrote:

source: Scanned from the booklet "GalGal" (Tel Aviv, 1948).

Copyright: According to Israeli copyright law (section 21), "The period of copyright on photographic materials is 50 years from the creation of the negative..." Consequently, this picture is now in the public domain.

In spite of this, I find that the picture has been deleted for insufficient sourcing. What more is needed?

Thank you,

--Ravpapa 11:23, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for being a nudnik, but I think I now see the problem. I should have added the tag {{PDIsrael}}, and because I didn't do that, the picture was probably deleted automatically. Can I undelete it and add the tag? Or do you have to do that? Tnx, --Ravpapa 11:29, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Hiroshima Station images

Could you please undelete Image:Hiroshima_Station_002.JPG and Image:Hiroshima Station 001.JPG. They were being used on Wikipedia, and your deletion of them (apparently for no good reason, based on your edit summary when deleting them) has caused problems. Thanks! Talk to Nihonjoe 04:43, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

The images were deleted for a valid reason: they had no license. The uploader was warned 8 days before deletion. As you are not the original uploader, I suggest that you stop making false accusations and if you still see a valid reason to request undeletion, please do so at COM:UR. Cheers! Siebrand 11:54, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
I'm not making false accusations. Your edit summary said nothing about there being no license (all they said was "In category Unknown as of 31 May 2007; not edited for 8 days" and the category link was red and therefore useless. Who uploaded them originally and maybe I can get them to reupload them with a license. Talk to Nihonjoe 05:38, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Moving categories

Hello. Your bot has moved almost all the categories of the German cities from Category: <...>, Germany to Category: <...>. However, in the German wikipedia many of the city articles still contain a template link like {{commonscat|<...>, Germany}} respectively {{commons:Category:<...>, Germany}} what now doesn't make sense since such links now lead to nowhere. Can you consider using your bot to correct these nearly 800 transclusions? Greetz, Geisterbanker 18:59, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Sure, I could do that but I am not a star at regex replacements. If you have someone that could code up the (2 or 3 lines of) code required to do this, I'll have SieBot run a full main namespace sweep on de.wp... Cheers! Siebrand 19:08, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Trying to work something out with replace.py. If it works, you'll see edits popping up. If it doesn't: not yet :). Will keep you updated. Siebrand 19:47, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

Please enter the new text: {{commonscat|\1}}
Please enter another text that should be replaced, or press Enter to start: {{[Cc]ommons:Category:(.*?), Germany}}
Please enter the new text: {{commonscat|\1}}

Thanks a lot --Geisterbanker 21:40, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
The bot is still running and I have checked all its edits. I have moved some categories here and fixed some edits on de.wp. I'm going to bed now and check the rest of the edits tomorrow. In any case, the edits will correct more links to a correct state than it will change existing links to an incorrect state. Cheers! Siebrand 22:48, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
✓ Done (I think) I have checked all the changes (not sure how many, somehwere around 600 I think) and fixed where needed. Some categories had been renamed and already had a non-working link. There were also some references to categories that had never existed, as far as I could determine. I have left those in place, if they made sense. Cheers! Siebrand 08:06, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi,

well I`ve found this image on internet. But because of description in German language, it`s sure for me that it was taken during WWI. It`s some kind of a postcard, German soldiers were making during that time. If there are some archives to verify the author of this image that would be fine, but I think author is unknown. But if this postcards are still copyrighted (author is known) the image is to be deleted, anyway. Do you know anything about copyright status of this postcards taken during WWI? So what's the problem? --Frankie688 13:19, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

See {{Please tag images}}. We require a source, author and license at minimum. You are just dumping content on us the way you did it. Please make an effort. Cheers! Siebrand 13:20, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Sources

You wrote me that 2 images were without a source. One was Image:100 CHF 1925 681736.jpg.

The source was already specified by the copyright tag (template:CNG).

Is it not enough?

Usser blocked

Hello my friend Mr. Siebrand. My account ruben_bardales85 is already blocked with de ID #6813, However there is no valid reason spesificated, It just said: "bye bye" (how funny !), maybe i did make a foul for wikimedia commons politics, i am really sorry, i just want to know when my account will be unblocked?

Your upload of Esvastica y lineas azules.png was the reason for the ban. Siebrand 05:20, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
  • Thank you for answering.
Come on, it must be an explicit reason... just like:
The file Esvastica y lineas azules.png is violating wikimedia commnos politic's, because ...????
could you please tell me the reason?

Belissarius' images

Delete them all if you wish! This way you (we) will lose a lot of photos very important for the history of World War II! I do not care if you are so unconcerned or simply stupid. From the very begining of my Commons "adventure" I am fighting against some rules which are unrealistic or without sense. Go this way, People, and in the nearest future you will find youselves without any valuable pictures but "fair use" things. Go this way, I wish you luck. Tonight I am quitting my Commons account. Play without me in the future. belissarius 03:47, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

I am sorry to hear that you are throwing the towel in the ring. I wish you didn't. As I read between your lines, you do understand that we only do free content and that you may not agree with the policies on Wikimedia projects. Policy could be a matter of debate in f.e. COM:VP. Until policy is changed, we only do free content. I do not particularly like having content deleted, but I do fiercely defend the free content only policy that we have on Commons. Cheers! Modern sculptors

Alertheid is geboden. Groet, Siebrand 12:05, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Image:BS-57-53.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:BS-57-53.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear.

The author is known, it is written in the banner. The source is also known and written in the banner. Providing a direct link could be safe for a moment, but no more in the future. If you want to track back the picture, then you see the picture is called "BS" = "basel stadt" then it is related to the Basler fasnacht --> http://www.picswiss.ch/geo/bs.html Dake 10:10, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

{{Bild-Picswiss}}

Dake 10:10, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

I mean, there is a fundamental problem on Commons as the source is usually an URL but this URL is subject to changes and 404 errors. The source should be written everywhere in a manner similar to the Flickr banner, ie. the source was available at XXX on the 18 July 2007. Dake 10:15, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
By the way, you can delete the whole category Category:Picswiss. People who uploaded this long time ago following the official policies cannot be held responsible for the volatile changes of the definition of a "source" on Commons... Dake 10:27, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
I'm looking forward reading your answer. Cheers, Dake 13:33, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
You do not appear to be making any effort to both properly source and substantially document the images. Instead you start ranting about policy. The images have bad names, only a rough indicator of a source is present and a very small description. They have been categorised in a rough way. Many of the images are unused[5]. Especially since the images contain no EXIF data, more information is required to be able to properly determine if the current claims are correct. Cheers! Siebrand 14:26, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
The images have bad names because they have automatically been uploaded using a bot from the website called Picswiss, the bad name has nothing to do with the source, as well as the category (hey, it has two categories, one called "Picswiss" and another called "Basler Fasnacht" which cannot be more accurate, they have by no means been categorized in a "rough way"). If this is a problem, then I am ready to reupload them using a better name but that won't fix the source problem. I am sorry that Commons doesn't provide a way to easily rename a picture, but this is another issue. In fact, the filename is the one that is used on Picswiss and it makes easier to find it there (BS = Basel Stadt). You do not appear as well to be making any effort on your own side to verify that these pictures are present on Picswiss. Note that I am not willing to a provide a direct link that is subject to changes in the few next months. This assumes that Picswiss is not subject to changes, a view which is wrong on the long term. If I provide such a link, another administrator will come back in one year to tell me that the picture doesn't exist on Picswiss, simply because the URL structure has changed. And by the way, your message is wrong : in most cases link to the website where you got it.. A website is a collection of pages, hence the "website" here is http://www.picswiss.ch --- So don't expect people to put direct links if your explanation message is all but clear. I am sorry but you are mixing everything, lack of EXIF, so-called rough categories and unused pics to justify your abusive "missing sources" statements on these pictures. Dake 16:32, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Please do whatever you can do to make the content on Wikimedia Commons as accessible and usable as possible. Cheers! Siebrand 16:42, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

I found it in a website for history of Iran, they didn't mention the photographer because it is not important and no body cares, according to Iran copyright laws every image after 30 years lose its copyright status and automatically will be in public domain. Siebot has incorrect edit summaries

Siebot changed the categories on seven images of Pennsylvania Historical Markers I uploaded and none of the edit summaries were correct (though all of the changes seem to be OK). Four claimed the category was now Roller coasters (sample diff [6]) and the rest were Michigan markers (sample diff [7]) Just thought you'd want to know and thanks for all your hard work here, Ruhrfisch 20:42, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

This is a known problem with the category library of pywikipediabot that is not thread safe. It is a known issue. Please be assured that the edit the bot makes is correct. This happens if the category move bot gets multiple categories to be moved, and there are 40 or more images in a category, and more categories to be moved in the queue. All of a sudden the job changes the edit summary. Looks quite scary and confusing, but is basically harmless. Will be fixed someday... Cheers! Siebrand 20:53, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the speedy explanation -just wondering, would it be possible to have some sort of less descriptive (but less error prone) edit summary for such cases, i.e. just "changed category per CFD"? Ruhrfisch 21:14, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
I could, but I guess it would just raise more questions. Now I get the occasional question about this issue (see archive for 5-10 more). If I used a very generic message, I'd probably get wtf was the cat changed? a lot more... Cheers! Siebrand 21:17, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Makes sense - Catch 22 or damned if you do and damned if you don't. Thanks again, Ruhrfisch 22:06, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Self promotion

Good morning. Why did you delete Image:Schepenpeeters.jpg as non-encyclopedic/self promotion? The guy is encyclopedic since he is a real schepen (creating the most ridiculous self promotion article ever). He released it under the correct license didn't he? So please keep it, maybe someone else will write an article about him, or he might become more notable, and less inclined to release his picture under a free license. Could this valuable image return please? Besides, the image is in use. Thank you in advance. Zanaq 04:16, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

't Mag gewoon in het Nederlands, hoor. Gebruik buiten hoofdnaamruimte wordt trouwens niet gezien als in project scope voor dit soort dingen. O well, voeg de afbeelding ook toe aan nl:Stropdas?

Your image-tagging

Good morning. Maybe you could be more careful next time with tagging images, which were uploaded by their photographer. The user is, well, not amused of your action there. Thank you. -- j.budissin+/- 00:54, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

It's kinda hard to imagine that Ralf Roletschek is the same as Marcela if User:Marcela doesn't even contain a hint to a real name. That's stretching it quite far. So nothing wrong with the tagging. NielsF ? (en, nl, fr, it) 01:25, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
And the box, which says "I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby publish it under the following license" doesn't give you a hint? Well, anyway I just wanted to mention, that there are users who could maybe lose their pleasure to help here if they get tags for their own pictures. Please remember this always. Thanks and Cheers, j.budissin+/- 09:20, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
You might want to refamiliarise yourself with the contents of the upload form and with the contents of {{Please tag images}}. Cheers! Siebrand 09:22, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
That's not my problem. I know them. -- j.budissin+/- 06:24, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
@NielsF - One click and the log tells you that either you have to tag most pictures uploaded by Marcela or latest Image:2006-mai-stammtisch-bln-105.JPG clarifies the situation. I know about it, I do this job at de - It is a capital sin to tag a file without controlling the remaining uploads - only this procedure will give you guarantee to find all bad files, or sometimes it is like here ... and you can stop tagging. --Btr 02:30, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
So am I a sinner or a saint? I guess neither. Uploaders have to make clear how they want to be credited as author, especially if an author name differs from a user name. On top of that, they do not state it is own work, an issue also often observed on de.wp and nl.wp, do there is really no permission. As for checking: I saw and edited about 1.000 files on Commons yesterday, the day before and the day before that. {{Sofixit}}. Cheers! Siebrand 05:51, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Between you and Siebot you have created an incredible mess with Category:Monarchs of Hawaii; all subcategories are dupes now, and the pictures are in limbo. Please fix, and turn off that silly bot. btw: categories should have the same name at the en:wiki article, remember? thanks, JdH 23:10, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

dear JdH,
Commons does not necessarily follow naming schemes from the English Wikipedia. sincerely Gryffindor 23:12, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
According to Commons:Naming categories the name of a matching English Wikipedia article will be a reference for naming a category in Commons, and I have been following that rule consistently. Following rules like this one is the best way to avoid disagreements like we are having now. Also, I believe it makes much more sense: Commons is supposed to be multilingual, and needs to be easily assessible to everybody, regardless of language. By having categories named the same as the en:wiki article makes it much easier to find the corresponding Commons category; introducing unnecessary irregularities is not particularly helpful. In case you wonder: No, I am not a native speaker of English. JdH 16:29, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
Siebrand:
Siebot has caused havoc with my newly created Category:Monarchs of Hawaii; all the subcategories are now duplicated. Furthermore, Siebot's newly created subcategories do not follow the recommended rules for Commons:Naming categories the name of a matching English Wikipedia article will be a reference for naming a category in Commons. Therefore I request that Siebot's changes be reverted, and that the subcategories be restored to the versions as I created them yesterday. thanks, JdH 16:38, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
Please chase the admin that gave the commands. (S)he created what you call a mess, not me. We do not have a policy that category names *must* be the same as on en.wp, although they can be.
Is is obviously improper for people to keep inventing their own rules as they see fit; that is an open door for inconsistencies and conflicts.
The admin that gave the command is in the history of User:CommonsDelinker/commands[8], being User:Gryffindor. I am certain (s)he will be open to discussion, as you are already having above. Cheers! Siebrand 17:37, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
All I am asking is to stop that bot from changing those subcategories until such a time that the dispute has been resolved. JdH 11:35, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Wards -> Electoral Districts

Hi, your bot changed Category:Locator maps for wards of Puerto Rico into Category:Locator maps of electoral districts of Puerto Rico (and consequently all the maps that were in the first one). I must notice you that the divisions I created are NOT electoral districts, but just wards (in spanish "barrios", in italian "circoscrioni" or "quartieri", and so on). Please consider this fact and the possibility to rollback the edits. Waiting for an answer, thanks --OliverZena 08:43, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Siebrand asked me to check his renaming list, and I replaced “ward” by “electoral district”. It was a mistake, but “ward” is not a correct translation of “barrio” neither. In fact, there is no correct translation other than “barrio”, since you can easily find this word in an English or American English dictionary.
So, I suggest to move Category:Locator maps of electoral districts of Puerto Rico to Category:Locator maps of barrios of Puerto Rico. --Juiced lemon 17:04, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

NielsF ? (en, nl, fr, it) 15:45, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
Hi Elenasan, please add a license, like "{{self2|GFDL|cc-by-sa}}" (see Commons:Copyright tags for more information). To do this you'll need to edit the description of the image, it isn't possible to do this by uploading the image another time. NielsF ? (en, nl, fr, it) 15:45, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Harry Potter

(ps. Siebrand is afwezig) -- Bryan (talk to me) 08:59, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
Groet, -- Bryan (talk to me) 09:02, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. --Siebrand 14:19, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Image deletion

Siebrand. you write :

Recreating deleted content outside of process is not a good idea, and doing so repeatedly may be cause for you to lose the privilege of contributing here.

You repeatedly delete images where the authorship, source and copyright status are clearly stated. You even remove images created by myself and members of my family. These removals are now being accompanied by threats. If you remove any more of my images I will register a formal complaint against yourself. Izzy 16:12, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

I see the source and authorship information, but not the copyright status. Please choose a suitable license from Commons:Copyright tags and add this to the files. -- Bryan (talk to me) 16:33, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Bryan. Sure. I have added appropriate copyright tags - but my guess is that is not really the problem. Siebrand even removed my mugshot from my talkpage. Izzy 18:00, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Siebrand. As regards Image:Sunderland.JPG, I have put on a copyright tag, stated the name of the photographer and even given you the photographer's telephone number. The photographer (a close relative) has posted the image to English Wikipedia with all rights released. Is there any more I can say that might convince you?. Izzy 07:18, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

What you could (and should) have done was to use commonshelper to make sure that the information concerning this picture from the original upload at en:wikipedia was preserved. You gave the picture a different license than the original uploader had given. Further, you had not added an image description nor a category, which mean that the image would have been very difficult to find for anyone searching for illustrations of Sunderland. This has now been taken care of, and the no permission tag was removed by me. Finn Rindahl 10:14, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

As I saw, you have deleted two images I have created for a French article : Image:975.png and Image:97_superposes.png. Can I know exactly why and what mistake I make ? Bzh29 10:27, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

I moved your post from Siebrand's user page to his user talk page (where it belongs). Hey, I saw your CommonsDelinker bot's message in an image removal at Mohammad Amin al-Husayni. So as I understand it, it was deleted by Bryan here, but was recreated under a different name here, apparently with the same licensing problems, and then re-added to the Wikipedia pages that your bot trimmed it from as well. 76.178.206.25 21:48, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

If it is from the US NARA, provide proof that it is from the US NARA. "Permission for Wikipedia" is not enough, images need to be under a free license. Please do not upload images before you have read and understood Commons:Licensing. -- Bryan (talk to me) 22:00, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

We name categories in English, hence the name. Cheers! Siebrand 10:14, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
-- ArtMechanic 11:25, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
Don't hurry, within a month or so, I count to propose an alternative commons naming scheme that is less dogmatic, more workable and realistic and above all, fits better with the naming that is really used on the commons in the non-English countries. --Foroa 12:09, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
This is not about dictatorship. This is about policy. Within the category namespace, we simply use English. One day we will have transparent i18n for categories, but we do not have that yet. Until then we do as stated above. If you think you can contribute to for example integrating wikidata or OmegaWiki funtionality in Wkimedia Commons, please contact me. Cheers! Images regarding Munich tram

What exactly were the problems with my images of Munich tramcars? You had them deleted without telling me what was wrong! I gave all the necessary data. I would like you to leave my images untouched! I don't look into Wikimedia commons all the time so I don't notice if there is something wrong with them very quickly. These images were mine and I licensed them correctly. You shouldn't have deleted them! And if necessary you can leave me a message in my account in the German wikipedia where I use the same nick. But PLEASE do NOT delete my pictures just like that. I didn't upload them for nothing! They were in use! I uploaded them again and I count on them to remain online! If necessary you can also contact me via the German Wikipedia where I'm using the same nick as here. I don't look in here very often but I keep using the German Wikipedia. --MaxM 20:32, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

No images are deleted just like that. As you are not giving any examples of deleted images, I cannot give you an accurate answer. All images need to have an author, source, permission and license. If any of those fail, there is not enough information to keep an image. No images that are not obvious copyright violations are deleted just like that. Bedankt!

I believed most flickr images were ok but there is a problem I now see with commerical use. -ahh I hate the restirctions of wikimedia!! -it makes thinks pretty difficult. I think I've wasted my time uploading them Ernst Stavro Blofeld 18:07, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I understand your frustration. However, because we believe in truely free information, all uses must be allowed. I do hope you keep on contributing free media to the Commons. Cheers! Siebrand 08:34, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

How do I settle copyright?

It is a public image provided by the French Ministry of Culture. Lord Loxley 01:23, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

You have to find a free license on a website or correspond with a copyright holder to obtain a free license... Cheers! Siebrand 08:38, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Dear Siebrand, I would appreciate it if you could explain the problem and I will try to fix it.

Thanks,

I have a permission for this picture it am also there with the Web address. Here mail to bestehtigung those are the pictures for your Site: Obacht: All pictures, which begin with pH, come from Paul Heublein paul.heublein@web.de, whom I ask you to also still ask in order permission that might however no problem be. The pictures, which begin with cb, come from Carl Bellingrodt, which cannot you any longer ask, might however normally no problem be. All other pictures has I "geknipst" cb-lobberich-01 and 02 to come from 15 May 1953 grefrath01 shows up the goods sheds in March 2000 grefrath02 is from the same date, I am however no longer reliably, where exactly the place is, it concerns a former signalman's cabin grefrath03 probably shows the BUe equal with the BF grefrath04 developed anlaeslich for a ETA Sonderfahrt over all at that time distances already shut down, I believe 1991 lobberich.jpg developed with equivalent opportunity ph-grefrath-01 shows the station Grefrath still with tracks before it, probably 1985 ph-lobberich-02 BF Lobberich around 1974 ph-lobberich-01 BF Lobberich with the outline 1977 pH-oedt all of approx.. 1980 oedt.jpg originate from the medium center sets of the Viersen, where you can get it perhaps still in better quality, meins are scanned only from a book. It probably shows the BF of the Krefelder railway should you further information need, can you gladly me contact. Please you consider expressly the rights of Paul Heublein, please sit down you with him in connection mfg to Heinz Nieveler. --Vie-mann 10:00, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Probably better to delete it as it is almost certainly within copyright, see en:Augustus FitzRoy, 3rd Duke of Grafton for more details. - FrancisTyers 16:30, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

The image was deleted because a source was missing. See Commons:Licensing for details. Cheers! Siebrand 08:42, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Siebot in holyday mood or been drinking too much ?

Siebrand, I have noticed the change: Category:Maps of Sullivan County,, Pennsylvania‎; 23:13 . . (+173) . . SieBot (Talk | contribs) (Robot: Moved from Category:Maps of Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. Authors: Ruhrfisch)

The transfer happened in the wrong direction. I think that your Siebot is taking profit of your absence: if the cat is on holiday, the mice dance on the table. --Foroa 21:27, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

OK, corrected by User talk:Gryffindor. --Foroa 08:29, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
The name says it all: it's a bot. Bots do what humans order them to do (and not what the think they order them to do :P). Cheers! Siebrand 08:43, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

I forget to licensing this pictures. Now are Ok. Thanks for your advice. --Xavigivax 12:31, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi! I have the same problem than Tony (see above) :

Your bot warned I hadn't given copyright info - but I had... at least I'd clicked on an option just the same as with previous uploads.
But it's still saying will delete in 7 days despite several goes at reuploading etc

I can't fix it :( Maybe you could help me? Thx --ELOdry 14:23, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

I fixed things for you. If you need to change the license later, you have to edit the page. Cheers! Siebrand 09:00, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

UAT

Hello! I've just seen you erased the Image:UAT-1989.jpg image, may I know why? Thanks and greetings. --EL PAPAUPA 15:07, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

User EPO removed it as a copyright violation. If you would like to see it undeleted, please go to COM:UR. log. Cheers! Siebrand 09:01, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I'm sorry for forgotting the licence; the image was a photo from a book printed in XIX century. It is copyright free since I'm the owner of the book. See you. Torredibabele

It is not copyright free because you are the owner of the book. It is copyright free because copyright has expired. Tha nk you for fixing it. Cheers! Siebrand 09:03, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Kanji

Hello, there no problem about these characters because the en:Shinjitai characters are in UTF-8, but the en:Kyuujitai characters aren't in UTF-8. So, I used the Microsoft Paint over Shinjitai characters and modified some strokes converting as Kyuujitai, using as references two websites: http://kanji.zinbun.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~yasuoka/kanjibukuro/japan-jimmei2.html and http://kanji.zinbun.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~yasuoka/kanjibukuro/japan-jimmei3.html . So, these characters are ineligible for copyright. --Taichi 20:18, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Modern sculptors

Template:FOP was toegekend.

Geef me aub je commentaar.--Gerardus 07:33, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Poe, lastige vragen allemaal. Groet, Siebrand 09:07, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
Beste Siebrand, je antwoord stelt me teleur.

Two Images I uploaded myself on Wikimedia Commons are tagged with the (ugly) Template:FOP by admins (from NoFOP countries):

  • 1. Image:Andreas Freyer1.JPG
  • 2. Image:Leonard Wübbena Atlasring 2004.JPG

Both Images are taken in Germany (FOP country) from works by German artists (I happen to know personally) for years now in the public space. I have uploaded many Images on the subject: Modern sculptures and linked them to various categories and/or articles in local WP(s). What is exactly the purpose of this Template as NoFOP Images are deleted rapidly (as I know from experience). If not a NoFOP Image of a sculpture, it can only be categorized as FOP. So why are not all free Images tagged FOP. What is exactly the meaning of this tagging? Can another admin remove the Template or does that action needs higher authority? What is the policy behind this Template? I asked this (I thought simple) questions to Siebrand (who comes, as I do, from the Netherlands), but he showed me the way to Commons talk:Licensing. Please give me your comment--Gerardus 07:55, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Vooral stellen, dus... Groet, Siebrand 09:50, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

De tekst ziet er prima uit.

De volgende reactie ontving ik:
Seems crazy to me, copyright paranoia and overkill to avoid some known problems about images of certain French works. I have replaced it on the two images concerned by a new {{PD-FOP-DE}}. Physchim62 11:50, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Groetjes--Gerardus 12:45, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

This painting (Image:Denys Affre.jpg) belongs to the: Archives Historiques de l'Archevêché de Paris and is from the XIX century. So it is automatically in the PD. (more than 100 years old). I do not know what else do you need?

Best regards Francis --FLLL 16:20, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

I am not sure what is needed additionaly for this image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Pulpo_luiza1.jpg . I assigned licence and indicated that I made this picture. Contrary to yours statement there is no discussion of what needs to be done. Pflatau 17:15, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

The adding of a license, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-2.5}}, did the trick. Cheers! Siebrand 09:10, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing my attention to the missing authorization there. Before publishing the picture under GFDL license I got explicit permission for that by its author C.J. Martin, which I duly forwarded to "Permissions - Wikimedia Commons"; now it appears they have failed to respond for two weeks, so I am re-submitting my permission request once again. In case there was no response, I could possibly reproduce here the author's written permission (reflected also in a July 17, 2007 entry in the Guestbook of C.J. Martin). Best, Apcbg 19:15, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi Siebrand. I uploaded this image but I'm not sure that she's legit. What do you think? Gridge 19:13, 9 August 2007 (UTC).

First thing is that it is missing a source. The source link does not lead to the image itself and/or a page that contains the image ({{no source}}). Second is the license. There is no link to a license notice at the source. Because of this, the license that is currently on the image ({{PD-USGov}}) cannot be checked (aka permission). That would cause the image to be nominated as {{No permission}}. So source and permission missing: oops :) Siebrand 19:29, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
Well... that's not good, right? delete the image. Thank's anyway. Gridge 20:36, 9 August 2007 (UTC).

--Factumquintus 20:22, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
