First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Kategorisering[edit]

Som framgår av historiken för File:Surahammars Bruk 3.jpg, har du fått lite hjälp av kategoriseringen av Cucumber och LX. Jag tog även upp detta på Commons:Bybrunnen#Tekniska museet. Jag tror det är bra att varje bruk och sågverk får en egen kategori. De bör nog ha samma namnformer som artiklarna i Wikipedia, alltså "Surahammars bruk" med litet b, inte stort. Can you please make shore that our photos not are deleted and please make our work with contributing to Wikipedia easier by not stopping the photos.

Hi Emilie,
as this was our first contact, I have no idea whether you were invited by a Wikipedian (who should have provided some information) or you were acting on your own initiative and received no "instruction".
Anyway, as we are not able to identify and verify any on-wiki claims, we have our permission system OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org), which allows rightsholders to send a permission by email, which is treated confidentially and evaluated by our volunteers.
I will use File:JOBE 2009 A02985 1.jpg as example what we need from you:
This image is credited to "Jonas Berggren", who seems to be the photographer. So, you need to provide his permission, as he is assumed to be the rights holder. If he has transferred all his copyright to Tekniska museet, then you need to provide a permission from the legal department of Tekniska museet which confirm this transfer.
Furthermore, the EXIF data for this image state "Får inte användas i andra sammanhang än där Tekniska Museets verksamhet omnämns. Får ej lämnas till tredje part." and "Bilderna får inte ändras eller upplåtas/överlåtas till tredje part.". (transl. by Google: "Not to be used in contexts other than where the Technical Museum's activities are mentioned. Do not be provided to third parties." and "The images may not be altered or leased / transferred to third parties.") These are typical restrictions of press photos, which are not acceptable on Commons and which are also in direct contradiction of the CC-BY license, which you have choosen. So, for your own good, you or your legal department should first obtain an expressed permission from the photographer, that he agrees to the distribution of his images under a CC-BY license which allows anybody to use them for any purpose, including commercial uses. If he agrees to that, you should re-upload a version of this image which does not have these restrictions mentioned in the EXIF data.
