Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Soibangla!

Why does user want to take down the Twitter files leak story did the FBI tell him to? Seems like something they would do considering they've worked with Facebook and Twitter before to do the same thing why are you collaborating with them if you are not please indicate your reasoning why. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2600:8807:C2D4:C300:794B:1D68:C8E9:7E70 (talk) 21:39, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Carter Page FISA warrant application.pdf seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

@Magog the Ogre: When uploading, I see there is only one option: "I own this." Shouldn't there be other options, such as public domain? Cheers. Soibangla (talk) 01:19, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I just went through the wizard and it's there, clear as day. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:31, 28 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Welp, that's kinda weird, because every time I've uploaded something it's always had "I own this" as the one and only option. Soibangla (talk) 02:54, 28 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Magog the Ogre: OK, I didn't notice the paragraph highlighted in red, which I would not describe as "clear as day," whereas the "This is my own work" checkbox is clear as day. Screenshot: http://oi67.tinypic.com/2yuzhhd.jpg Soibangla (talk) 17:18, 28 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I can't see your image. Nonetheless, I believe that you've seen the option by this point so it's moot. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:01, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If there is a way I can change the existing file to public domain, I’m happy to do so Soibangla (talk) 18:07, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Screenshot-www.census.gov-2018.09.15-10-25-15.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Sources?[edit]

I suspect that most of your uploads are not your own work as you claim. For example, File:Estimated Effects of ARRA — Final Report, Congressional Budget Office — February 2015.png seems to be taken from a US government report. Can you please go through your uploads, add sources, and correct the licenses? Otherwise, they are likely to get deleted. Thanks. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 03:08, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I submit that the image uploader has a significant design flaw that I was unaware of until recently, so I previously uploaded images that were not my own work, and I have more recently become aware of this design flaw and have rectified the matter. Specifically, the uploader has a prominent default option for “this is my own work,” but a far less prominent option (a simple link down below) for “this is not my own work.” The first thing an editor should see when opening the uploader is a clear choice, side by side, between “own work” and “not own work,” and based on the choice, routed to the appropriate uploader. I suspect I am not the only editor to run afoul of this design flaw, and I will endeavor to go through proper channels to request it be fixed. If you would point out images that I long ago uploaded improperly with the former option, I am happy to upload them again with the latter option. This image, for example, which you brought to my attention, originated from the Census, which Charlotte Rampell just happened to also post on Twitter, so I didn’t use her work. I will upload it again using the “not my work” uploader as a federal government public domain document. I assure you that I was never engaged in knowing nefarious behavior. Soibangla (talk) 04:50, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've only uploaded a few images here, so I am not very familiar with the layout of the uploader. I didn't have any trouble choosing whether my uploads were my own work or someone else's but I'm sure it could be made clearer. This link will show you everything you have uploaded. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 02:39, 11 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@World's Lamest Critic: I was just about to re-upload that Census image as federal government public domain, but I see that it apparently already was. Did you happen to do that? I notice another editor renamed the file, but I don't see s/he changed its copyright status. I just wanna be clear on what's going on here. Cheers.Soibangla (talk) 18:28, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No, that was another user. Can you add a link to the source, please? Thanks. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 02:39, 11 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

File copyright status[edit]

Information icon Welcome to Wikimedia Commons. While everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the project, one or more of your file uploads had missing or false information regarding its source and copyright status. Please note that Wikimedia Commons takes copyright rules and infringement very seriously. Files may only be uploaded and included if their copyright status meets the conditions stated in our licensing policy, and if their source is clearly documented. Files that fail to meet those conditions may be deleted, and users who fail to meet them may be blocked. Please follow our first steps, if you haven't already. If you have questions, feel free to ask at the Village Pump copyright question page or on my talk page. Thank you. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 23:07, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
