First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

deletion[edit]

Nemo has written me in polish, that this image was copied from en.wiki to pl.wiki, but on en it was deleted as copyvio.

Sorry for not informing you

--WarX 22:31, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I understand... But you see, for me there is no possible way to know whether images in wiki pl (or any other wiki for that matter) are infringing copy rights. I can only assume that they are in the public domain. Nemo5576 is quite knowledgeable about weaponry, does he have any images of the SMG in question? --Atirador 22:42, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HH-1N pics[edit]

Thanks for taking the time to add my USN HH-1N pics to the gallery...I was rushed for time when I uploaded them, and was trying to get them into the appropriate EN:wp articles before quitting for the night...just wanted you to know that your helpfulness was appreciated.... Akradecki 04:33, 29 March 2007 (UTC) (from Mojave, where it was back to sunny today!)[reply]

De nada, you're welcome. --Atirador 15:34, 29 March 2007 (UTC) (from the river Rhine)[reply]

Big Revolvers[edit]

You made a comment about my picture of a

BFT .45-70 Revolver

. Actually yes, I can fire it. ;-) It's quite fun. Because of the weight of the gun and the low-pressure load, the recoil is quite manageable. It's very similar to a Colt Python with a stout .357 load in it, if you use a stout .45-70 load. It's MUCH better about recoil than a lightweight .44 special (I know, I shot them both on Sunday). Arthurrh 17:06, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This piece surely looks awesome. Haven't touched a gun for a while (and would probably sprain my wrists with each of those). Best regards --Atirador 20:26, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you convert this image to vector, and upload it as svg? Yuval Y § Chat § 20:59, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately I cannot. I tried to open the *.svg file with Firefox but that crashed the browser (each time, dunno why). Opera works though... Anyway, I should not upload a file which might bring down your browser, that is why I exported it to *.png . What do you think? Best regards --Atirador 21:20, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you make a vector image, it's no matter how small it is - this image looks too big... Yuval Y § Chat § 21:21, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, rescale it to 1024 x Y and reload? --Atirador 21:29, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If it's a real vector image, you can resize it to 640x480, or less, and it would still look the same when resizing the image, as you can see in en:Scalable Vector Graphics Yuval Y § Chat § 00:10, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My original image IS a vector file (*.svg, made using Inkscape). I did not upload it because it crashes the Firefox browser on trying to display it. I therefore turned it into *.png pixel graphic file. People would gut me if they open a file which then shoots their browsers down. I will try to alter the vector file until it agrees with Firefox, but this might work or maybe not. Do you see the problem? --Atirador 10:13, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Finally... took me about a dozen attempts, but came up with a vector graphic which doesn't kill the browser. The pixel file may now go --Atirador 11:16, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cats for Cartridges[edit]

Thank you so much for placing my pics in their proper catagories. I know my way around Wikipedia fairly well, but Wikimedia is still new to me. Your help is appreciated! TeamZissou 03:57, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pleasure... thanks for pics --Atirador 08:07, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Savoia Marchetti[edit]

Ciao, hai fatto bene ad inserire questi aerei in questa categoria. Nenahce sapevo, in effetti, che tipo di aerei erano. Grazie. --ninetto 20:47, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have to admit that I don't have a word Italian to my name. Except Grazie which means thank you :-). May I therefore infer that the category added was correct? Greetings/Grüße --Atirador 07:14, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thx[edit]

Danke fürs Helfen, ich lade zu erst die Bilder und dann füge ich sie nach ein paar Tagen erst ein.--Sanandros 20:35, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Atirador,

Thanks for your expert work on the car categorisations. I am pretty clueless on these matters!

Regards, Benkid77

de nada, you're welcome. Well.. I'm not an expert either. As it is I'm not quite sure about the Austin-Healey, should by be a Sprite though --Atirador (talk) 21:03, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please help replace this outdated license[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license {{PD}}. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding {{PD-self}} if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

The images we would like you to check are:

Museum specimens[edit]

Hi, you have some images of animals in museums, but there is no info about which museums they are in. Could you add this? Especially for the quagga, as there is a very limited number of specimens in existence. FunkMonk (talk) 21:07, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Location?[edit]

Hi Atirador - do you have a location for File:GreenWoodpeckerSnow.JPG, please? A very nice pic, the location would make it a lot more useful. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 16:10, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

thank you for your praise... To be frank, it was right before my home (somewhere in eastern Rhineland-Palatinate, can't give the exact position for obvious reasons). Regards --Atirador (talk) 19:46, 22 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
