First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

アイコンの作成について[edit]

  • 1. 西武池袋線に使われていた「鉄道路線ロゴマーク」ですが、これは駅ナンバリング等のような路線固有のものではなく、ただのピクトグラムですよね。Wikipediaの記事は案内（ガイドブック）として存在するわけではないので、ピクトグラムの配慮は必要ありませんし、固有のものでないなら対象を理解するために必要なものとも言えず、過剰な装飾ではないでしょうか。
  • 2. File:Subway TokyoMarunouchi.png等についてですが、実際の記事で使われるサイズ（だいたい20px以下）では文字が小さすぎで見辛くなる弊害を回避するために、あえて公式画像に似せる事よりも視認性を優先している、と初版作成者は述べています。昨今の駅番号の文字列からの画像化にも言える事ですが、画像になった事で字が小さくなりかえって見辛くなっていませんか。

今後も同種のアイコンを作成、反映する予定と思いますが、過剰な装飾ではないかという点、正確性と視認性のどちらを採るべきかという点について、ケースバイケースで検討をお願いします。--ButuCC (talk) 18:10, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

デタラメなファイル名でアップロードしないで[edit]

Wikipedia日本語版で活躍しています Licsak と申します。私は先ほど社名入りの芝山鉄道のロゴファイルの名前を変更するよう依頼いたしました。あなたは有用なロゴファイルを多数、アップロードされている労苦に感謝したいものの、過去にアップロードされたファイルの中には暫定的な名前と思しきファイル名がちらほら見受けられることにあえて苦言を呈したいと存じます。キーボードを適当に叩いて生成したメディアと関連の無いファイルは他のユーザーの再利用性を損ねます。Commons:ファイルの命名方法にあるとおり、ファイル名にはふさわしい名前が必要であり、それに合致しないものはCommons:ファイルの改名の要求ができ、管理者やファイル移動者、スチュワードによって要求が適切であると判断された場合は改名されます。

もし「部品」画像をアップロードされる場合でも、部品として使ってもらえるよう、ちゃんとした名前付けをしてもらえると助かるのにな、と思いました。個人的なファイル名の命名に機械翻訳を援用することも可能でしょうから、ぜひ他の方に『使っていただける』ファイルを上げていただくと助かります。なおウィキメディア・コモンズは『私的な』な画像置き場ではありません。念のため。--Licsak (talk) 13:42, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
