API python library

Hi, the library looks good (i had only a cursory look though :)). One comment - please make sure you add gzip compression to minimize bandwidth requirements. See the get() function of the pywiki framework that deals with zipping/unzipping http streams. Thanks! --Yurik 03:00, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia programming

so i figured i'd give this whole... wikipedia...programing...thing out. and you look like u know what you are doing. any pointers? The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.62.158.173 (talk • contribs) at 06:16, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Please give me some more detail in what you want to do and I will try to help you. -- Bryan (talk to me) 13:01, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Can you please write an intro to this category? Is it linked in the deletion menu because now these items can be deleted? And if so what should the deletion summary look like??? thanks --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:41, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

I don't think these objects should be deleted. CheckUsage is still required. Ideally all items should be tagged {{Bad name}} or {{Duplicate}} and only be deleted once CommonsDupes indicates the object is no longer in use anywhere. CommonsDelinker cannot always replace everything (especially in protected templates or more complex template structures). Some manual work can be part of the process to truely orphan an image. Image:Flag of USA.svg was and Image:European flag.svg is an example of a harder case. Both images take a few days to completely orphan and several hours of work. Cheers! Activity testing script

Greetings Bryan.

The script you wrote to test activity among admins, does it also test for MediaWiki edits? Regards, Fred J 19:10, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Ok then, please set it to also include such edits... and thank for telling me it was out of date for 25 days, it explains why Paddy was included (per Commons:Administrators/Inactivity_section#If_you_still_need_your_adminship,_sign_here). Regards, Fred J 19:39, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

CD ongelukkig

Hoi Bryan. CD is al een paar dagen erg ongelukkig en doet vrijwel niets. Kan je wat TLC geven? Groet, Siebrand 16:38, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Werkt hopelijk. Code is echter wel een grote rotzooi geworden. -- Bryan (talk to me) 19:45, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Please consider exempting me from the 6 uploads per hour limit on the Flickr upload bot. I have approximately 1800 edits to Commons, and 16,000 to the English Wikipedia. I run across group of racing related images on flickr that I upload to Commons using the very useful process. I have notified you several times that there is problems with the bot. Royalbroil 03:17, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

HermesBot is blocked?

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Blockip/HermesBot ?? ... Perhaps this issue should have been brought to the bot approvals page as I (perhaps incorrectly) just marked this bot as approved based in part on your last comment there. Sigh. Now what should we do? Feel free to revert me in that as needed. ++Lar: t/c 01:39, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Image deletion warning Image:Falash Mura1.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Persistent error

I'm trying to use the Flickr upload bot to add Image:Waterhouse memorial Yattendon, Berkshire.jpg, but it won't take for some reason. The most recent error code was 7567c0da. Thanks. -Hit bull, win steak 02:06, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm getting an error on a different image as well (code 7b95551c). Is the bot broken? -Hit bull, win steak 03:27, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
I broke something. Will be fixed soon. -- Bryan (talk to me) 13:01, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Bot changing the license O.o ??!

Hello, if I understand well :

  1. you have a bot able to change the license of serie of images ;
  2. you know how to "raise" bots !!!

I have about 1.200 images ( =.= ) in the Commons:CJK stroke order project, which need a License change (clean up), this according to... their file names . This change is need, but only doable by a bot.

Are you able and interesting to help in this task ?

(All information are in the file name. In example, a "j" in the file name means "[[Category:Japan's specific stroke order]])

--Yug (talk) 10:47, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

OK ! That's great !
3 months ago I made some draft (Template talk:SOlicense - is it clear enough ?). Otherwise, I will have to prepare some more clear examples for you. And I will have a computer only next month, ableing me to do such "2 hours" edit work summary.
The most important was to know that you may help, and this is perfect.
--Yug (talk) 04:17, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Ok, many thanks. If something is not clear, simply ask me ;) Yug 02:03, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

In my opinion your decision was a mistake. This is the coat of arms of the swiss city Arbon. Therefore it´s in the public domain after german and swiss law and because its copyright has expired. In the german article stands "Das Wappen wurde bereits im 19. Jahrhundert verwendet" (The coat of arms has been used already in the 19th century). So it should be old enough to be in the public domain. Please restore this coat of arms. Chaddy 16:27, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

After Swiss law? I thought this issue was still unsettled on the de-WP. Can you point me to the relevant decisions, please? Lupo 16:30, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
In de-WP we use coat of arms from Germany/Austria/Switzerland as "official creation". After this opinion, the coat of arms are "gemeinfrei" (comparable to public domain). Maybe, this could be problematical on commons, because we used german law as base for this opinion. Alternatively I could upload it on de-WP, but for that I need the file. Chaddy 19:06, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm not really sure about whether they are allowed on Commons. The file was without any source and just "Coat of arms are gemeinfrei " without any further evidence. I can temporarily undelete the file if you want. -- Bryan (talk to me) 19:10, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes please, then I´ll upload it to de-WP. Chaddy 19:51, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Thank you. Chaddy 19:58, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
You can delete it now again. ;) I want to upload the file with the same name in de-WP. But that´s only possible, when it´s deleted in Commons. Chaddy 20:13, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

adminship &c.

I've replied to your comment among others here, FYI. I mean no disrespect when I say that the various reasons you presumed for my opinion (that I "see adminship as a reward for 'all' [I] have done for Commons"; that I "have no interest in the community and see adminship as a status") were all entirely inaccurate. — Dan | Talk 15:47, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

I was not offended, though I appreciate your preemptive apology; I am simply pointing out, in entirely good faith, that your conclusions were mistaken. It is the same situation with "fatuous": I recognize that some people spent a lot of time thinking out that policy, but I believe it's a wrongheaded policy. I am not interested in meeting bare minimums; I could of course have deleted five nonsense pages at any point. I am interested in giving meaningful assistance to the project whenever my other obligations permit; the removal of my adminship after a busy few months seems hardly necessary when I have shown my willingness to contribute in the past and have stated (clearly, on my userpage, for many months now) my intention to do so again in the future. — Dan | Talk 20:27, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Filename prefix blacklist

Hello, I have been trying to track down someone whom can change the "Filename prefix blacklist", as stated in my post on the Village Pump. I was directed by user MichaelMaggs to try contacting you. to change Jake Gyllenhaal's picture

Hello Bryan,

We the fans of Jake Gyllenhaal, better known as Gyllenhaalics, do not like the picture used on Jake's Wiki page. There are thousands upon thousands of very good pictures of Jake, and that one is not one of them, unfortunately. As an emergency measure, I found a very recent picture of Jake that will do for now, which I was going to load myself until I saw that I have to have 50 edits at Wiki before I would be able to do that. I barely have three edits, and most of the time my edits get changed within 24 hours by trolls. So I barely hang around here at all.

Would it be possible for you to change the picture? I have put it at Flickr as is required, her is the link to it:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/14251177@N02/1450506655

here is the description of it:

Jake Gyllenhaal at the Toronto International Film Festival for the World Premiere of Director Gavin Hood's film Rendition. Starring Mr. Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep, and Peter Sarsgaard. September 7, 2007.

Thanks in advance if you are able to do this,

Sincerely,

Gretta
