Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user’s Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world’s best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Photo challenge translations[edit]

Hello FRacco,
I just noticed that you translated the photo challenge watchlist notice. Would you be interested in helping to translate the challenge pages, too?
Pottercomuneo has done the Italian translations during the last months, but as we are often very late in preparing the pages, it would be better to have more than one person helping for each language (I had no time to do the German translation myself this month, so I'm glad there were others to help out).
Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 11:12, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello FRacco,
I forgot to {{ping}} you when I asked what you ment with the "skip to". Improvement are always welcome but in this case I don't know what you mean… could you give an example (e.g. link a page where it’s used)?
Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 18:16, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

April photo challenges ready for translation[edit]

Hello FRacco,
the April challenges are hopefully ready for translation! Here are the links:

I'm preparing the new watchlist message in HelenOnline’s sandbox – as always… Thanks for your help, Anna reg (talk) 07:47, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your help with the templates for winners/etc! -- Colin (talk) 14:13, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

Commons:Photo challenge translation – May[edit]

Hello FRacco,
perhaps you already noticed – the challenge themes for May are ready for translation:

I also created Template:Photo challenge theme/i18n/Mother Nature Strikes Back and Template:Photo challenge theme/i18n/Panoramas – hopefully without making any mistakes ;->.
Best wishes and thanks for your help!

Translation of Template:Photo challenge layout[edit]

Hi! I noticed that you translated {{Photo challenge layout}} to Italian, but you forgot to translate the header. I ported it to the Translate extension in the meanwhile, so you can finish the translation here. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 11:04, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

@Tacsipacsi: Thank you very much! I edited the template, so now all the header (first and second part) can be translated. I don't now how to update translation page. Please, can you help me? Thanks in advance. --FRacco (talk) 00:08, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
I moved back {{#switch}} to layout template to keep as many code there as we can. How to update the translation page: find a translation administrator like me (other cases: you might try the translators’ noticeboard), so I marked it for translation. Unfortunately it may take even hours to be able to translate (here on Commons). --Tacsipacsi (talk) 07:05, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
@Tacsipacsi: Thanks! (1), thanks! (2) and thanks again (3)⁈(1) – Now I can understand: we put all the code into /layout subpage, and we use the translation page like a dictionary with as many parameters as we need. Great! – (2) – I had already translated some pages in the past, but this is the first time I try to edit one. Thanks for translation update instructions. – (3) – Well, another question, please! I would like to move the introduction sentence (the first langswitch) from Commons:Photo challenge/Voting directly into Commons:Photo challenge. So Commons:Photo challenge/Voting and Commons:Photo challenge/Submitting contain only the current challenges links, easy to update! I put the code in Commons:Photo challenge#voting (as hidden text). Can you check it? Thanks in advance. --FRacco (talk) 09:59, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
(3) ✓ Done --Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:34, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

I've applied the Photo Challenge Gold/Silver/Bronze templates to the March winners. But I notice (in English) that the header box says "Photo Challenge {{{header-place-1}}}". Can you investigate? Thanks. -- Colin (talk) 19:32, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

@Colin: Thanks for the error report! It was the Translate extension’s error and should be fixed now. (It didn’t appear in other languages.) --Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:57, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! -- Colin (talk) 22:13, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
@Colin, Tacsipacsi: Thanks!

Commons:Photo challenge translation – June[edit]

Hello FRacco,
we are really late this month (I didn't have much time), but the challenge pages for June are:

The new templates are therefore {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Collections, Collecting and Collectables}} and {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Eyes}}. Oh, and the challenges are both restricted to June and 4 pictures per user – the sentence is added after the {{Photo challenge rules}}-template.
Best wishes and once again thanks for helping!
--Anna reg (talk) 23:05, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Commons:Photo challenge translations – July[edit]

Hello FRacco,
the pages for July are finally, finally ready for translation:

The title translations are therefore {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Food production and processing}} and {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Unfamiliar Vehicles}}.
I removed the time restriction from last months restriction (time and pictures per user) – please check that I didn't delete anything wrong…
Best wishes and once again thanks for helping!

Template:Photo challenge watchlist notice[edit]

How does this work? Is there scope to provide translations for challenge names? Or are they always English? See User:HelenOnline/sandbox/Photo challenge template. How do we set up August? -- Colin (talk) 09:22, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Hello Fracco,
do you think you could help me to include the possibility of a third theme in the template (I'd like to have a third two-month challenge this month…)? I can try to change the template but I'm not sure I understand the code well enough…
Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 10:03, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

Commons:Photo challenge translations – September[edit]

Hello FRacco,
I didn't manage to do any notifications for August (I hardly participated in the challenge preparation), but I have some news for September:
The new challenges are

The title translations can be found under {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Fossils}}, {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Fountains and wells}} and {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/100 years later}}.
Oh, and we have a time restriction for September for Fountains and wells – please check the text!
Best wishes, --Anna reg (talk) 00:42, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
