File:SFJazzUSPS-BBCancellation-b.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. Rationale: This image fits under the exemption category for the English Wikipedia
[edit]See Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria
This image meets all 10 of these criteria:No free equivalent.
- 1. There is no free equivalent for a US Special postal cancellation that also has pictorial elements. USPS primarily has slogans for special postal cancellations. Or it is called a pictorial cancellation. In the article Cancellation {mail) the images are pictorial cancellations, not special cancellations with pictorial elements.
- 2. Respect for commercial opportunities. The reason for the blurred image and side angle on the photo, which I took of the actual envelope that was sent through US Mail, assures that it is unlikely to be used in manner to replace the original market role.
- 3. Minimal usage:
- a. Instead of posting many images from various USPS Building Bridges Postal Cancellations, I found one that easily conveys the significant information in a blurred photograph.
- b. I used a portion of the envelope, not the entire envelope. I used low Low- rather than high-resolution/fidelity/bit rate is used. You can see that there is a slogan, but you can't read it exactly, so this serves the purpose of illustrating the slogan and pictorial elements together, without showing the full image precisely.
- 4. Previous publication. This Non-free content must be a work has been published or publicly displayed outside Wikipedia by (or with permission from) the copyright holder at [1].
- 5. Content is encyclopedic and meaningfully illustrates the article in a way that makes it clear to a reader not familiar with all the rules of USPS and why this is unusual.
- 6. Media-specific policy. This image meets the Wikipedia:Image use policy. This is a three dimensional image that I personally took a photograph of. I am also the copyright holder of the cancellation that is clearly seen in the image and the copyright holder of the photograph itself and I specifically gave permission for Wikipedia to use this photo and the cancellation that it portrays.
- 7. One-article minimum. This image has been used already in Cancellation (mail) article.
- 8. Contextual significance. This image is contextually significant because the article is discussing the difference in the US between a special cancellation and a pictorial cancellation, and this particular photo is of a unique series that has both a slogan for a specific event (like a special cancellation) and pictorial elements. It enhances the article for the reader to see the image with both the slogan, which says "80th Year of Music Recording in San Francisco" and was at a specific even and it also has pictorial elements. And although the slogan is hard to read because of the deliberate blur, it is easy to see there is a slogan. This is different than the pictorial images shown in the article on the right hand side, which are not special cancellations and were not meant to commemorate an event.
- 9. Restrictions on location This image is used in an article and meets the criteria for location.
- 10. Image description page. I believe that I have done this on the talk page. But, perhaps for this particular point, someone can guide me what an image description page should include. I has posted this at this location: Talk:USPS Building Bridges Special Postal Cancellation Series.
Since I am the copyright owner of both the photo and the Building Bridges and illustration that is shown in the photo, I am trying to figure out the best way to share this. I created this image, hoping to follow the suggestions of writer User:AngusWOOF in an earlier section on this page that she dated to be: 00:20, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Now I understand. Commons is different than Wikipedia
[edit]Oh, I understand now. Commons is only for free use images and Wikipedia can specifically use non-free content. I didn't understand that there was a difference. But, now I do. It is ok to take this image off of commons. I will upload just to wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Karen Lile (talk • contribs) 08:02, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
