Please change the date it's June 30th, I uploaded them and I saw that the date changed. Thanks for the update! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dpalma01 (talk • contribs) 03:42, 1 July 2018‎‎ (UTC)

File:Son-Tinh 2018 track (cropped).png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Autopatrolled rights given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. FitIndia Talk Mail 18:14, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations, dear license reviewer[edit]

If you use the helper scripts, you will find the links next to the search box (vector) or as single tabs (monobook). They are named license+ and license-.

Hi Coffeeandcrumbs, thanks for your request for license reviewer status. The request has been closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Majora/LicenseReview.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

Important: thou shalt not review thy own uploads, nor those of anyone closely related to you!

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.freenode.net. You can also add {{User license reviewer}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! --1989 (talk) 16:46, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

2007 State of the Union Address[edit]

Hi Zhuyifei1999, I have another file with which I need your help. It is the 2007 State of the Union Address. You can find it at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NX81NNO-b_caZ5y5wvQJkdnLgnS7PazY/view. The file is 16 GB. I would appreciate your assistance in processing it. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 23:48, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ok downloaded. There a stream 'Time Code Media Handler', which from what I googled seems to be quicktime timecode information. It it important? Since if I do the transcoding normally the 'timecode information' will be lost. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 04:25, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also, next time, fell free to just post on my talk. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 04:26, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Zhuyifei1999: No problem with losing quicktime timecode. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 05:28, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok starting first pass. Target bitrate limit: 11199 kbps. Probably an overkill for this 486p video. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 09:34, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Zhuyifei1999: Is this something you could teach me how to do? Do I lack some user right that is required? --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 09:42, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You mean transcode files? The second pass has started btw. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 09:51, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I am sure I could learn to run a few Unix commands specific to this task. But are there any other requirements? Do I need any special rights to use the tools you are using? --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 09:55, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Zhuyifei1999: Basically, I am asking if I need anything more than a Linux system to do this myself? --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 10:03, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(Edit conflict) So I run transcodes using en:ffmpeg on wikitech:Nova resource:Video (it's more about better internet speeds and more CPU cores then my own computer). The more complex part is figuring out the parameters for ffmpeg, and there are way too many, sometimes outdated or conflicting, guides online. I normally do 2 pass encoding, so the general format looks like this:

ffmpeg -y -i [input file] [video parameters] -an -f webm -pass 1 /dev/null
ffmpeg -y -i [input file] [video parameters] [audio parameters] -f webm -pass 2 [output file]

video2commons uses

ffmpeg -y -i [input file] -threads 16 -row-mt 1 -qmin 19 -qmax 19 -vcodec libvpx-vp9 -tile-columns 4 -auto-alt-ref 1 -lag-in-frames 25 -f webm -ss 0 -an -pass 1 -passlogfile [pass log file] [output file]
ffmpeg -y -i [input file] -threads 16 -row-mt 1 -qmin 19 -qmax 19 -vcodec libvpx-vp9 -tile-columns 4 -auto-alt-ref 1 -lag-in-frames 25 -f webm -ss 0 -ab 128000 -ar 48000 -acodec libopus -pass 2 -passlogfile [pass log file] [output file]

It's a constant quality encoding with quantizer 19. It generally works as archival quality, (considering Wikimedia has video scalers to produce streaming quality videos after upload), but it does sometimes result in bloat.

Disecting the parameters:

-y
don't ask if output is being replaced
-i
input
-threads 16
use yup to 16 threads to encode
-row-mt 1
enable multithread encoding for tile rows
-qmin 19 -qmax 19
constant quantizer 19
-vcodec libvpx-vp9
output VP9 video codec
-tile-columns 4
2^4 = 16 tile columns
-auto-alt-ref 1
automatically change to an alternate referene frame if necessary
-lag-in-frames 25
maximize the frames (25) in which the encoder can look
-f webm
output webm contaner format
-ss 0
start at time 0
-an
don't encode audio during first pass
-ab 128000
audio constant bitrate 128kbps
-ar 48000
audio sampling rate 48kHz
-acodec libopus
output Opus audio codec
-pass 1/2
pass number
-passlogfile
a file so the first pass can keep some information needed for second pass

So this works mostly, but if the input file is large and I want to make sure the output is under 4GiB, I use constrained quality with constant rate factor, constraining the bit rate of the video up to a maximum of 4GiB / time, and this is what I use when I manually transcode (bash):

FILE=[input file]
MAXBITRTE=$((( 4 << 20 ) * 8 / $(printf %.0f $(ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration -of default=noprint_wrappers=1:nokey=1 "$FILE"))))k
ffmpeg -y -i "$FILE" -threads 8 -row-mt 1 -crf 20 -b:v $MAXBITRTE -vcodec libvpx-vp9 -tile-columns 4 -auto-alt-ref 1 -lag-in-frames 25 -f webm -ss 0 -an -pass 1 -passlogfile "$FILE".log /dev/null
ffmpeg -y -i "$FILE" -threads 8 -row-mt 1 -crf 20 -b:v $MAXBITRTE -vcodec libvpx-vp9 -tile-columns 4 -auto-alt-ref 1 -lag-in-frames 25 -f webm -ss 0 -ab 128000 -ar 48000 -acodec libopus -pass 2 -passlogfile "$FILE".log "$FILE".webm

It's mostly the same, with

-crf 20
constant rate factor 20
-b:v $MAXBITRTE
bitrate limit

By the way, some of the options have multiple ways to write, in case you get confused when reading online guides. For example, -c:v is the same as -vcodec, -b:a is the same as -ab. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 10:46, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you need ffmpeg if you do it locally or ssh if you want to ssh to a remote machine to do it. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 10:47, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Zhuyifei1999: Thank you! I will give it a try on my next video. Is the second pass finished? --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 11:00, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No it is still running. Currently at frame=34222 fps=7.0 q=0.0 Lsize= 627144kB time=00:19:02.15 bitrate=4498.1kbits/s speed=0.233x (And I accidentally cancelled it while trying to copy, so I have to rerun second pass... :( ). 0.233x means every 1 second spend on transcoding transcodes 0.233 seconds of video, so it takes around 3.5 hours. Also, you might find Help:Converting_video#ffmpeg helpful. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 11:09, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Coffeeandcrumbs, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Extended thanks[edit]

Thanks for voting on my DR for that Oreimo train picture! I felt like that was a case of something that had no clear precedent and thus needed discussion; my problem was whether it was a case of "the characters are unimportant; the uploader simply wanted the train" or "Kyosuke and Kuroneko are intentionally in the image". In retrospect, I should have taken this to the Village Pump. Speaking of, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this Village Pump discussion, which involves whether the image would violate any copyrights on Sesame Street characters. -BRAINULATOR9 (TALK) 23:11, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Naomi Osaka photos[edit]

Appreciate that you took the time to look at the pictures I uploaded. While I was not the photographer the photographer uploaded the pictures to flickr with an acceptable license and included the exif data to prove that he had taken the photo. I believe this meets all requirements for listing the image on commons. Here are the images: File:Naomi osaka.jpg and File:Naomi osaka profile 2020.jpg . Flickr page here https://www.flickr.com/photos/186414198@N07/49384180057/ Chawkinstennis (talk) 02:59, 19 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Chawkinstennis: I considered that but the photographer, not named "Rob Prange", has a website where these photos can be found with EXIF information included. This looks to me as a clear case of COM:Flickrwashing. Especially considering that the Flickr account only has a single upload. The actual photographer has a Flickr account at https://www.flickr.com/photos/jjtennis/.
The proper way to get permission is to contact the photographer at http://www.j48tennis.net/contact and ask them to email us through COM:OTRS. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 08:15, 19 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My Mike Norton photo[edit]

Hello. I noticed that you created a cropped version of my Mike Norton photo for the Main Page, but you changed the file name format to remove my name credit from it. May I ask why? Nightscream (talk) 21:31, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nightscream, only because I prefer simple file names? As the uploader of the cropped version, I believe I am perfectly within my right to name the file. However, I did not even realize your name was in the title because the filename is pushed together and with no spaces or punctuation. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 10:28, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A file you uploaded is on the main page!

Bodycam video[edit]

Hi C&C. What are your thoughts about my uploading more police bodycam screencaps/video to Commons while this remains open? What do you think about uploading them to Commons v. to enwiki? I still think I'm right on the substance, and normally I'd wait until discussion was closed with a result and then follow the result, but it's been 7 months now and as I'm sure you know DRs take forever here, so I was thinking of uploading another one anyway (for an article I'm working on). Maybe the new upload should be bundled with the pending DR (maybe all the items in the category should be bundled). Or maybe I should upload it to enwiki instead of here while the DR is pending here. On the other hand, if you think a new upload here or at enwiki would be gaming or disruptive, I'll hold off. No hard feeling either way, I just didn't want to surprise you with what could be seen as a dick move by uploading another one while the DR was still pending. Levivich (talk) 16:52, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Levivich, I would advise against it but that is just my opinion. I would not be offended if you did.
What state is this new image from? Maybe there are other licenses under which it qualifies.
The question of are body camera's copyrightable seems like a question that should be poised at COM:VP/C for wider discussion. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 18:48, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Colorado. OK I'll hold off at least for a while, might revisit it later. Larger discussion seems to make sense, but idk how this stuff works on Commons. (And frankly I'm not too keen on jumping into what might become Monkey Selfie Dispute Part II.) Levivich (talk) 19:05, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And thanks :-) Levivich (talk) 22:46, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
w:Arrest of Karen Garner. Does your opinion about threshold of originality differ for the bodycam video and the surveillance video (both linked in the article), or same opinion for both? (Just curious.) Levivich (talk) 05:28, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Levivich, yes. My opinion would be the same. I don't understand why fair use is not enough. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 15:56, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I mean it is enough in the sense that we could get an image on the article via fair use. But, if I'm right and these are not copyrightable, we could (and should) upload the full videos to Commons. All important police bodycam and surveillance videos. And that would be much better than enough. Non-profit Commons should supplant for-profit YouTube as the repository for police videos, IMO. Less importantly, PD would allow multiple images, or use of those images in multiple places. Levivich (talk) 16:06, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I recommend starting a discussion on COM:VP/C to gauge other people's opinions. I really do not like being your only barrier to this. If I am wrong, I want you to have the freedom to do this. In fact, I would like to upload tons of videos myself. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 16:54, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, you're not an obstacle! Quite the opposite, I value your opinion and I appreciate having someone to bounce ideas off of, especially someone who has a different opinion on the matter than I do. I hesitate to start a discussion here for a few reasons. While I think these videos are PD under US law, I have no idea about other countries, and I know Europe takes a different approach than the US when it comes to what is a mechanical reproduction and what is a creative work. Aside from that, the issue would actually be decided under Commons policy and not any jurisdiction's law, and I really know very little about Commons policy. This discussion could be had on other projects like enwiki, where I'm much more familiar with local project policies. All in all, it seems like the safest thing to do is to let the DR run its course and see where that leaves us. But I think in any event I would leave it to some other editor, more experienced at Commons, to start a project-wide policy discussion. If the DR here ends up as a delete, I was thinking of uploading it to enwiki and having a discussion there about PD v. fair use. If the consensus on enwiki is it's PD, the media can be uploaded there, and I wouldn't have to wade into any policy discussions on another project (Commons). That was my thinking anyway. Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

File:2019 World Athletics Championships logo.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!
