First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Coincidence[edit]

I just sat down to begin reading "nothing sacred" by douglas rushkoff. I then went to the Commons, and decided to review new files, and saw File:Open Source Judaism Logo.png there. i then went to the article its associated with, and saw 2 things: one, the term is associated with rushkoff. two, the logo further down the page File:The Open Siddur Project logo.jpg, for the open siddur project. Your logo is the one of the few times where a 12 color rainbow is in use. now, why is that a coincidence? because i myself created and posted the only other 12 color rainbows (not as well done as yours), at File:12 color rainbow flag.png and File:12 color rainbow flag triangle.png. perhaps this is more than coincidence. its certainly good to feel like im a part of something bigger...Mercurywoodrose (talk) 05:13, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

w00t! double 12 color rainbow serendipitous coincidence! I've been strangely driven over the last couple days to get that page improved. It's strange since I've been working in open source and my Open Siddur Project for the last five years and only a couple days ago did I find that page and realize I needed to do something about it. Siddur Torah Ohr images resolution[edit]

First of all, thank you so much for the scan of the Siddur! It is a wonderful resource!

In transcribing it, I have encountered some parts (examples are Nekudot at some places, and small instructional/footnote text) that are difficult to decipher due to lack of image resolution. Therefore I ask you:

Do you have a scan with a higher resolution, by any chance? If you do not, do you have the original Siddur of which this is a scan, in which case perhaps it can be rescanned in higher resolution? If you do not have an original, then do you know if/how it is possible to get a similar Sefer from this printing (or another which is in the public domain)?

By the way, an update :-) Figured out a while ago, but forgot to update here. The images (JPEG iirc) themselves in the PDF are (quite a bit) higher resolution than what the MediaWiki viewer displays. Using software which extracts the images, it can be seen that the images themselves are much clearer and much higher resolution. That effectively solves the problem I was having and answers my query.
I also uploaded an older printing of Siddur Torah Ohr here: File:SiddurTorahOhr5656-Chelek1.pdf. Although it displays in higher resolution in MediaWiki, it is similar quality scans to the source images in your scans. I prefer to use the images from your copy, since it is closer to the Nusach that Chabad uses today iirc.

File:Heckert GNU white.svg is tri-licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0/FAL/GFDL 1.3-only of choice. CC0 is not a compatible license with any of these. Whether this work exceeds a threshold of originality and if CC0 could be applicable is… tricky, to say the least.

Author's rights to redistribute this work:

  1. Under CC BY-SA 2.0 have been automatically terminated per section 7(a) indefinitely.
  2. Under FAL license have been terminated per section 8 indefinitely.
  3. Under GFDL 1.3-only has been automatically terminated per section 9, and would usually provide an option to reinstate rights automatically.

For #1 or #2, Commons needs Commons:OTRS permission from Aurelio A. Heckert to reinstate copyright and redistribution. #3 isn't so certain, because CC0 is an irrevocable license and GFDL 1.3 terminates automatically if attempting to sublicense. OTRS permission is needed for all of these, it seems…
