" on File:Moje-vzpomínky-blurb.jpg. The file was deleted since it did not have clear copyright situation. Since there is a text and old photographs, you might want to use something like: {{Copyright information |photograph={{PD-heir}} |text={{cc-by-sa-4.0}} |design= }}, where you state that the photographs were taken by your family members and you inherited them (if that is the case). Let me know what you want to do. --Jarekt (talk) 13:17, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Photolis response

The Czech text says: "This image is a double page from my own photo book which I made myself using Blurb.com. I am author of that book that contains my fathers memories, my own texts and photographs from my own family archive." The memories copyright owner was my father who died in 1999, then a I inherited it. The old photographs used in the book were mostly taken by my father, some of them come from his childhood and these have unknown authors, but they all were owned by his parents, then by him and now by myself. I am sure there is no copyright violation but being a newbie in Wikipedia I would appreciate your advice how to administrate it. --Photolis (talk) 08:35, 5 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Photolis.

You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful.

This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions.

Explanation by Photolis[edit]

Hello Taivo,

I have published my first article in Czech Wikipedia just three weeks ago, on January 25, 2015, and more four then. As this Discussion page now demonstrates, I didn’t manage photograph uploading at all, as all of my uploads were deleted because of copyright violation. I studied Wikimedia Conmmons help in more detail and tried to improve my score but I am still rather confused.

I have uploaded 8 photographs in total and all were deleted. Two of them were real copyright violations, this was my fault, because of my low understanding at the beginning. I became much more careful then and I firmly believe I am the copyright owner of all six remaining images. I tried to document in detail all facts regarding the copyright ownership. But even now I have to do something wrong, because different admins still see me as a very suspicious individual.

The list of my uploads:

1 File:Moje-vzpomínky-blurb.jpg (my photograph of a double page of my own photo-book, created using Blurb.com. It contains a text fragment with memories of my father, which I have inherited and edited into a book, plus two old photographs of an unknown author, originally published in 1925)

2 File:Plicka fotokniha 1940.jpg (my fault, I shot a cover of my photographic book)

3 File:Rodinné fotoalbum.jpg (my photograph of a page from my family photo album, containing old photographs of of an unknown author, originally published in 1940 and before; my heritage)

4 File:Tvorba-fotoknihy.jpg (my fault, this was a screenshot from Adobe Lightroom)

5 File:Moje-vzpomínky.jpg (another trial of no.1)

6 File:Dry minilabs in a shop centre.jpg (explained in detail in my response to your Deletion request)

Copyright violations Last warning (sent by yourself, dated 18 February 2015)

7 File:Focus-ring.jpg (already deleted, unknown reason yet; my photograph of a focus ring on an old point-and-shoot camera)

8 File:Family-album.jpg (already deleted, unknown reason yet; another trial of no. 3, well documented from my point of view)

The next step seems inevitable – my account will be blocked. Of course, I can stop my further contribution, but if exists a way how to reverse this fateful development, I will appreciate your help.

With regards, --Photolis (talk) 15:22, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Photolis, you are afraid, that blocking your account is inevitable. It is not so. I deleted family album photos, because in collages source and license of every single image must be given. There was no author of every image used in collage. Photos with unknown author have also copyright. The copyright expires 70 years after author's death. If the photos are made in 1925, then it is possible, that they were living at 1945 and so the photos are still protected with copyright. You inherited the photo album and the photos, but you did not inherit copyright for these photos. But re-uploading the dry minilab photo with EXIF data and bigger resolution would be good. Taivo (talk) 17:49, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And I deleted photo of focus ring, because EXIF data said that author is a strange three- or four-letter acronym, not Photolis. I suspected, that you were not the photographer (name was different). Taivo (talk) 17:55, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Taivo, thank you for your comments, they really helped. Maybe I eventually even understand what is important on Commons. I have re-uploaded the Dry minilabs photo with higher resolution 1784 × 2000 plus EXIF data. I also have uploaded the Focus.ring photo with proper author name. It were my initials there before, used as a default setup in my photography workflow ('jrm' stands for my name Jaroslav Rudolf Mares). I left this photograph small, long edge 500px only, as the real ring size was 48 mm, i.e. even in this resolution the ring is displayed more than twice magnified on every monitor. I don't think such tiny subjects should be displayed in full screen size, looking unnatural and clumsy. Anyway, the original size 2576x1384 is available.
Should these both be acceptable now, the only remaining image in question is the Family-album. When my copyright troubles with Commons started, I have consulted it with some experienced Czech wikipedians and one of them advised me to use the copyright tag "Anonymous-EU", which could be the suitable solution for this case. I studied it in detail then and still suppose it's true: photographs used in the collage are individually dated on the album page, so it's obvious they were published from 1936 to 1941, i.e. they are 74+ years old now. Their authors are unknown and never disclosed their identity. So I put the Anonymous-EU tag in the "Permission" parameter of the "Information" template and explained where the images came from. What was wrong with this reasoning, please?
Best regards, --Photolis (talk) 14:08, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Anonymous-EU tag: {{Anonymous-EU}}

Thank you very much. I closed the deletion request as kept. What concerns file:Family-album.jpg, then I counted there 10 little photos, made in different years by probably different photographers, and it was difficult to believe, that authors of all 10 remained anonymous. Okay, I can even believe that. But here is another question. Photos in Commons must have educational value. This collage of 10 photos has no educational value (unless somebody in these photos is famous). Unused personal photos are out of project scope. But everybody is allowed to have some personal photos, for example for use in their user page. Where do you want to use the photo? If you want to put it in your user page, then I can restore it. If you do not know, then I better do not restore it. Taivo (talk) 19:39, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The only purpose of this image was to illustrate the Czech version of "Photograph album" article ("Fotografické album" in Czech language). Its first section explains how a Traditional family album looks like. Such family albums usually show people and mostly they aren't famous. Educational value in this case is in the look and arrangement of the album page as a whole, not in photographs inside. If there was another similar picture available in Commons, I would love to use it. I definitely do not insist on this my photo, unfortunately I did find nothing suitable there. And I still believe that the article deserves an image of this type. Of course, the decision is yours. If you do not agree, let it deleted, I don't intend to use it in my user page. --Photolis (talk) 22:07, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I restored the photo, good luck in the future. Taivo (talk) 22:52, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Laser-princip-cz.webm was nominated for MOTD[edit]

Your file has been nominated for a Media of the Day.

Your contribution to this project has been noticed. A file Laser-princip-cz.webm, which was uploaded by you, has been nominated to be displayed on the Main Page of this project as a Media of the Day. You can view this and other nominations at Commons talk:Media of the day. It is always a good idea to let other contributors know when you think your file would look good as a featured media file, provide descriptions in different languages, and perhaps spread the joy by nominating media of other uploaders, that you believe deserve that. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 06:20, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
