Hello, Pjposullivan!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

"Diocese of Lancaster" and "Lancashire"[edit]

There are parts of the Diocese of Lancaster that are not in Lancashire. There are parts of Lancashire that are not in the Diocese of Lancaster. So your recent change to the categories isn't correct. Can you please undo what you did? -- Dr Greg  talk  22:56, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Dr Greg. Funnily enough I was just looking that up now. I think i also made the same mistake with a few other dioceses. Sure, no worries, will undo it. Pjposullivan (talk) 23:35, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! -- Dr Greg  talk  19:08, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Thank you FDMS4, the owner of the photos has now changed the license for both photos:

Are they now on the right license?

Thanks for the input, Pjposullivan (talk) 21:18, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Yes, great, pinging User:McZusatz who enforced the deletion.    FDMS  4    21:26, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
@Pjposullivan: File:St Cuthbert's Church Venerable Bede window, Durham by Lawrence OP.jpg is still NC-ND at the source according to flickr. --McZusatz (talk) 21:40, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
@FDMS4: Ever thought about RfA? ;) --McZusatz (talk) 21:40, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
@McZusatz: Yes, thanks, but I'm unfortunately rather busy at the moment :).    FDMS  4    21:58, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Hi McZusatz, I messaged the owner of the photos last night and I think that the Venerable Bede window (https://www.flickr.com/photos/paullew/14078019597/) has been switched to the same license as the Lady Chapel window. Thanks again for helping me with this, Pjposullivan (talk) 12:38, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello Pjposullivan,

the following content you uploaded is not free and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:Immaculate Conception Church, Massey.jpg

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files which can be used for any purpose, including:

  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload works you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

And also:

Yours sincerely, Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:22, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Hedwig in Washington, thank you, I was the one who put those pictures up for deletion. By doing so, I was trying to undo my past mistakes. Thank you for deleting them. Pjposullivan (talk) 09:15, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
No problem, no worries. Smile --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 23:06, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
