Hello, William M. Connolley!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Sea Ice Extent Graph

[edit]

I suggest that in accordance with good practice, the vertical axis of this graph should include labels indicating the units of measurement. I assume that they are km^2 x 10^6 (or m^2 x 10^12 if you prefer) - but this is not explicit - and it should be.

It would also be better if the vertical axis extended all the way down to zero.

Rarely. It doesn't seem a very sensible place. See above William M. Connolley (talk) 08:25, 18 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Did you see en:Naomi Oreskes & en:Erik M. Conway used your File:Seaice-1870-part-2009.png in their new book The Collapse of Western Civilization: A View from the Future? 99.119.131.201 06:51, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't read that so no, I didn't know. How interesting William M. Connolley (talk) 06:58, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File:Seaice-1870-part-2009.png comments?

What does "lightly munged " mean on your File:Seaice-1870-part-2009.png ? See en:Munged password and en:Mung (computer term) for potential confusion. 99.119.129.191 02:03, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Its the second sense. I had to edit the ftp file in some way. "Lightly" means it was a trivial change that you don't need to worry about -W]
With how serious the en:effects of global warming and the conflict-of-interest editing there is on wikipedia, it would be helpful to clarify your slang-ish comment; seeing that is referenced in a book. 99.119.129.191 07:31, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you knowledgeable about "meteorologist" John Sawyer?

[edit]

Are you knowledgeable about en:John Sawyer (meteorologist)? It seems valuable to expand his article.
