First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Please carefully read COM:CAT[edit]

Please carefully read COM:CAT about how to categorise media in Wikimedia Commons. The system is completely different from, for instance, Flickr. It comes down to that files should be placed into the most specific category or categories possible. Categories are also not intended to be used in a "poetic" sense. Category:Liberty is meant for files pertaining to freedom causes, and not for files which, in your opinion, evoke the "feeling" of being free whilst on a holiday. Landscapes is not a dustbin category.[edit]

You recently dumped dozens of files into the Landscapes category, including pictures of birds, people, ships and other images that clearly do not belong there. The landscape category regularly becomes overcrowded because of this sort of thing, and has a warning at the top of the page to that effect. If you need to dump images into a category, can i suggest that you create a new category for them. failing that, dump them into a non-overcrowded category such as "Cuban politicians". Die Drohne flog ja höher als 100m, was m.E. die Grenze für private Flüge in Deutschland darstellt. War da problemlos eine Erlaubnis zu bekommen? Wo? Question for you[edit]

With regard to File: Dublin Stephen's Green-44.jpg, would you share a few things with me? What was the weather like that day, clear, sunny cloudy etc.? What adjustments have you made in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom? When you took the shot, do you remember what "mode" that you were running in the Go App for your camera, was it Auto Apiture or shutter mode? Have you made any changes to the gimbal sensitivity settings or were you flying in the "factory default" settings? Would you be willing to upload the original, I would be interested is seeing it. Answer: Thanks, for your feedback. It was very cloudy this day, i used lightroom to modify color, luminanz, lens corrections, brightness and temperature. Categories[edit]

Hi! Thanks you for all your valuable uploads. I took a look at the photos you have uploaded and I couldn't find that many where you have added Categories to it. Could you please do that. If the pics are not in any category, they will not be found or used however fantastic they are. The more cats, the better the chance is that the photo will be used somewhere, which is the whole point about uploading them here.

A quick guide to this is available here: Commons:Categories. On the present FPC, some other users have very kindly helped you with this, but you have quite a backlog. Try to be as specific in the categories as possible, like in the FPC you had added "Category:Ireland", a very very wide and big category, when the correct one was simply "Category:Aerial photographs of St. Stephen's Green". Dronepicr, I am sorry I missed your reply. The rules are for when the file was originally uploaded. Other images from the same flight uploaded under different name would be OK. Other versions of the same file uploaded under the same filename are not OK, and uploaded under different name are likely to be deleted as identical to the original. A lot of those rules are very much in the gray zone and are or are not allowed mostly based on how a code that tests them is written, so I am not 100% sure how the code would react to those scenarios. --Jarekt (talk) 16:11, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Earth 2020[edit]

Hallo Dronepicr,

bald ist es soweit: Vom 1. Mai bis zum 30. Juni 2020 findet zum achten Mal der internationale Wettbewerb Wiki Loves Earth statt. Deutschland ist zum siebten Mal dabei. Dabei können unter anderem Nationalparks, Naturschutzgebiete, Geotope und Naturdenkmäler fotografiert und die Fotos hochgeladen werden. Du hast an einem der vergangenen Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen. Deshalb laden wir dich ein, dieses Jahr wieder mitzumachen. Wir freuen uns auf deine Fotos!

Dieses Jahr ist es aufgrund der Ausgangsbeschränkungen schwieriger aktuelle Fotos zu machen, deshalb läuft der Wettbwerb dieses Mal zwei Monate. Es sind wie immer viele spannende Motive überall in Deutschland zu finden. Neben Naturdenkmälern wie alten Bäumen oder Naturparks im Gebirge und am Meer können Geotope wie Quellen und Aufschlüsse oder FFH-Gebiete fotografiert werden, um sie unter anderem in der Wikipedia zu dokumentieren. In den letzten Jahren sind zahlreiche neue Listen und Artikel in diesen Bereichen entstanden, für die wir uns über Fotos freuen. Als Einstieg für die Suche nach Motiven hilft diese Übersichtsseite. Weitere Informationen erhältst du hier und vor allem unter dieser Anleitung. Falls du im Moment nicht wie sonst in die Natur fahren kannst, findest du vielleicht in den Tiefen deiner Festplatte oder auf dem Smartphone noch interessante Fotos.

Du möchtest am Wettbewerb teilnehmen, dir fehlt aber die richtige Technik? Dann wirf doch mal einen Blick in den Technikpool und das Technikleihportal von Wikimedia Deutschland! Dort findest du Kameras, Objektive und Zubehör verschiedenster Art. Sollte noch Technik fehlen, die deiner Meinung nach angeschafft werden sollte, freut sich Wikimedia Deutschland über dein Feedback zum Technikpool.

Außerdem laden wir Dich ein, vom 1. Mai bis 31. Juli 2020 an der Vorjury teilzunehmen. Diese bewertet die hochgeladenen Bilder und ermittelt so gemeinsam mit der Jury, die im August tagen wird, die Sieger von Wiki Loves Earth 2020 in Deutschland. Das Vorjurytool ist hier bald freigeschaltet. Du benötigst dafür nur deinen Benutzernamen und das Passwort.

Wiki Loves Earth 2022 - Deutschland[edit]

Hallo Dronepicr,

bald ist es soweit: Vom 1. Mai bis zum 30. Juni 2024 findet zum zwölften Mal der internationale Wettbewerb Wiki Loves Earth (kurz: WLE) statt. Dabei können wie immer Nationalparks, Naturschutzgebiete, Geotope und Naturdenkmäler oder andere Schutzgebiete fotografiert und die Fotos hochgeladen werden. Du hast an einem der vergangenen Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen. Deshalb laden wir dich ein, auch dieses Jahr wieder mitzumachen. Wir freuen uns auf deine Fotos!

Der Wettbewerb ist zweigeteilt, das heißt, wir unterscheiden zwischen den beiden Wettbewerbskategorien Landschaft und Detail/Makro. Zur Wettbewerbskategorie Landschaft zählen auch geschützte Einzelbäume. In der Wettbewerbskategorie Detail/Makro werden Pflanzen, Tiere und Pilze in den Schutzgebieten bewertet.

Es sind wie immer viele spannende Motive überall in Deutschland zu finden. Neben Naturdenkmälern wie alten Bäumen oder Naturparks im Gebirge und am Meer können Geotope wie Findlinge, Quellen und Aufschlüsse oder FFH-Gebiete fotografiert werden, um sie unter anderem in der Wikipedia zu dokumentieren. Auch im vergangenen Jahr sind zahlreiche neue Listen und Artikel in diesen Bereichen entstanden, die sich über Fotos freuen – zum Beispiel in Bayern die Liste der Naturdenkmäler im Landkreis Landshut oder die Liste der geschützten Landschaftsbestandteile in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mit ihren Unterlisten oder gar einzelne Artikel wie die Landschaftsschutzgebiete Sommerschafweide an Buchhalden und Sommerschafweide auf Hilbertswiese in Baden-Württemberg.

Wir vergeben in diesem Jahr drei Sonderpreise für Fotos von Feldrainen und Feldgehölzen in geschützten Gebieten.

Außerdem laden wir dich ein, vom 15. Mai bis Mitte Juli 2024 an der Vorjury teilzunehmen. Damit bewertest du die hochgeladenen Bilder und ermittelst so gemeinsam mit der Jury, die Anfang August tagen wird, die Sieger von Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Deutschland. Das Vorjurytool ist bald hier freigeschaltet. Du benötigst dafür nur deinen Benutzernamen und Passwort.
