Sports by continent categories[edit]

Hello, Jh0an1 Uzca73gu1. I noticed that you created several categories for sports in the Americas and sports in Central America. The Americas and Central America are not continents, so these categories should not be under "by continent" categories. The categories for Central America can go under North America, because Central America is part of North America. The categories for the Americas are probably not needed, because the entries there can go under North America, South America, or possibly both if there are any that apply to both. Not everything for the western hemisphere needs to go under "the Americas". Thanks, and feel free to ask if you have any questions about this. --Auntof6 (talk) 00:35, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Auntof6. I understand your exposition. Your criterion (Central America is part of North America) is valid for anglophone countries. But for other American languages, the criterion is different: Central America is a different region that North America and it's different that South America, and "the Americas" is a continent (please, see Number of continents section in the articles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent and Modelos continentales section in https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continente).

In Wikipedia in Spanish: "América Central, también llamada Centroamérica y América del Centro, es la región geográfica dentro del continente americano comprendida entre América del Norte y América del Sur." (Central America is the geographical region in the American continent located between North America and South America).

(The Central America is a subcontinent bordered at North with Yucatan Peninsula, at México, and at South with Colombia, at West with Pacific Ocean and at East with Atlantic Ocean.)

The different criterions are difficult. However, Wikimedia Commons is the wiki for all the people, anglophone and no anglophone. Thank you for your suggestions. If the best presentation, for all people, anglophone and no anglophone, is as you suggest, I agree with you.

I understand that different people may look at the continents differently. There are several ways of determining what a continent is. However, here on Wikimedia Commons it needs to be done one way, consistently. It was decided that the way to do it here is to include North America and South America, and not include Central America or the Americas. It's not because that's a wrong way to look at them, just that it's not the way it's done here. For reference, the seven continents recognized here are displayed at the top of Category:Continents.
There were discussions about this in the past. One of the discussions is here. Another is here. You can see in those discussions that an administrator warned the editor involved at that time that he/she should not continue changing the way continents are defined here without first getting consensus to do so. Please minimize the number of things that are categorized under "the Americas".
Also, you can reply here. There is no need to reply on my talk page, because I am watching your talk page for replies. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:06, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that here on Wikimedia Commons the continents divisions needs to be done one way, consistently. However, in the former threads I can see discussions, but I don't see a consensus, but a imposition. (Note: I made the today work without to read the Verdy p contributions).

The original consensus would have been way back when the continent categories were originally created. I can't point you to a discussion for that: such discussion was probably done among the people who originally set up the site. Since the continents have been managed one way for so long, it would require a consensus to change it. If you want, we can ask administrators to comment here, or you can start a discussion if you think we should change it. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:35, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your explanation. I'll follow your initial suggestions.
