Rename to Snake311[edit]

Hello. I request my account to be renamed Snake311. Thanx:) --Alastor Moody 00:40, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Alastor. Happy to help! Commons has a page just for this, post to COM:CHU and one of us 'crats will take care of it. If Snake311 is an ID you use on another wiki, please do the cross link thing to show you control that ID there. If Snake311 is already used here by someone else, post in the usurp section so we know.... Thanks! ++Lar: t/c 06:49, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Username Caligari[edit]

Hello Lar,
i am Caligari from the German wiktionary. I wanted to create an account on Commons for quite some time but i realised that there is already a user named Caligari. This user was active end of 2005 and only contributed three pictures from which one was cancelled. Now i want to ask You if it is possible to get me this username here on Commons. I would like to upload pictures under the username "Caligari". I am a professional photographer myself and would like to share some pictures.
p.s. by the way, Spacebirdy asked me to send regards...so, best regards! - cheers, Caligari, 15:11, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Gruße! We'd love to have your contributions and usurping the other name should be no problem... just place a request at COM:CHU so it's traceable and archivable (follow the request for a crosslink)... ask if you have any problems. ++Lar: t/c 16:00, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello again, Spacebirdy told me, before getting eventually renamed here on Commons, i have to create an account to rename. sounds obvious to me! so i just created the account User:Caligari27.
ok then, i'll place a request at COM:CHU - thanks for Your help, cheers, Caligari27 16:07, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello Lar,
sorry for the delay. some things need time on a busy day. i just wanted to add my diff-link (or however you want to call that!) here. but you moved it to a subpage i don't know. so could you please add the link where you've put the request. - thank You, cheers :) Caligari27 23:42, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH FOR RENAMING! And thanks for the offer to help!
By the way, do you want me to answer in german next time so you can profound your knowledge? i can also answer in german and english or just in english? you name it. - best regards :D, Caligari 00:09, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

I would also like to thank You Lar :) I can assure You, he will be a gain for this project, kind regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 00:56, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

@"Na und? Wohin sinde alle diesen sehr shönste bilder? :) Bitte macht schell, mann. Ich wünschte ankuken!"

Hello Lar,
as i told birdy before on my talk page, due to contractual reasons i will not be allowed to share publicly any photographical content created by myself - not to mention, to upload content to the internet - before presumably midyear! :( I also stated this on my user page. Well, what can i say: sometimes you have to sign an adhesion contract for stable and good income reasons! All i can do now is to phase out the contract.
In the meantime, i could certainly do other things here as well. I could do translations: french/english/afrikaans to german, german to french/english, french to english, english to french. Next week i will take a closer look around, try out things or offer my help here and there. it would be great, if You could give me a hint maybe where to help or what to do, other than uploading pictures. - best regards, Caligari 16:28, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Hallo Lar,
++Lar: t/c 17:11, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
No, it's not about money "in the first place". when i signed the contract i thought it would be great to have a stable financial condition - settle down, no fear of losing one's livlihood, that's all. it would make things easier, quite contrary to work freelance. (now, i'm not so sure about that any more. to work freelance has in my mind more advantages than disadvantages. but that's a matter of opinion and experience.) apart from that, if i would violate the contract i would be forced to pay a five- to six-figure sum of money!
of course, i would like to examine thoroughly categories; that would be no problem at all! Many thanks for the hint!
By the way, when adressing me you can use the informal "Du" rather than the much more formal "Sie". (that's understood!). Maybe that would be easier for You?! - best regards, :) Caligari 18:10, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

OTRS check[edit]

Hello Lar, would you be so kind as to check the permission for images uploaded by User:Antifaschist 666:

These images are listed for deletion (in november and december), because the description allows use only in wikipedia. Also the given licenses are different, one is CC-BY-2.0 others CC-BY-SA-3.0. We need clarification to delete or keep the images, or to give clear information to the image descriptions. Thank you in advance. --GeorgHHtalk   14:24, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I looked at the ticket to see the permission granted.

From: Uhl <(redacted)>

Subject: Fotos von Pyranja
Created: 11/03/2007 20:11:56

Pyranja
"
Gruß AF666

I am only de-1, so someone who speaks German better might want to validate this, but I read that as Pyrana records saying: "we give permission to Wikipedia to use the referenced photos" and not as "We grant license such and such on the referenced photos". If my interpretation is correct, that statement is not sufficient as it does not grant the needed downstream license... Hope that helps. ++Lar: t/c 16:45, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello Lar,
you wanted me to validate the statement. I can assure you that your interpretation is correct. if you want to have a translation. well, here it is. the statement says
All photographs (owned, taken) by Pyranja, that i have uploaded/that i was uploading, do not pose a copyright infringement. Pyranja stated the following in an e-mail that has been sent to me:
"Pyranja Records allows Wikipedia to use and publish the photographs that can be found in the attachment.
Yours sincerly,
Pyranja"
Best regards and have a nice weekend! :o), Caligari 23:11, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Category:Maritime disasters[edit]

Hi Lar, any plans for Category:Maritime disasters? -- Deadstar (msg) 10:30, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

I had thought that images such as Image:Eastland_disaster_port_side.jpg might go there. That particular disaster wasn't really a shipwreck. But it never caught on, the images that I had placed there got moved. So it could well go away. However, if you look at some of the stuff in Category:Shipwrecks it's not very well placed there. A boat on top of a house thanks to Katrina isn't really a shipwreck, nor is deliberate destruction of a carrier to form a reef. But oh well. ++Lar: t/c 11:18, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Even though the category Shipwrecks is rather full, I'm not sure that "Maritime disasters" would be of any help. At the moment, it sits there empty - will I delete and it can be recreated when the time is there? Or do you want to fill it with abovementioned image & link it to "Shipwrecks"? -- Deadstar (msg) 15:17, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Nuke it, it was an ill formed idea. If I get inspired maybe I'll do some subcatting in shipwrecks, or you could. ++Lar: t/c 15:35, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Nuked :) -- Deadstar (msg) 16:21, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Oversight[edit]

Oversight policy[edit]

I've created (and protected) a basic page at Commons:Oversight. Obviously, as one the users with +oversight your input is needed to get it working properly. One specific request is can you add a public email to the page, so anonymous users can contact you if needed.--Nilfanion 12:51, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the initiative. I have commented further on the talk and made a few small edits to the page. I hope we can move it to policy soon. Good work! ++Lar: t/c 17:11, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Minor oversight action requested[edit]

Acidentally, I posted a message in User_talk:Nanditoako while I was not logged, so my IP address was recorded. When I realized that I log in, and signed it with my account. Can you remove the modification of 2008-02-05T02:26:17 and 2008-02-05T02:25:41 so my IP will not be disclosed?. Thanks you. Rjgodoy 02:36, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

That is not for use of oversight. Additionally, it is better to email such requests in private. Majorly (talk) 02:39, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Alex is correct on both accounts. ++Lar: t/c 02:50, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

De sysop[edit]

Hi Lar. I am not quite clear about the rules, so I would like to ask first. If I am giving back my sosop tools for one or two weeks, because i want to have a short break, can I get them back after this break without a new election? Regards, abf /talk to me/ 13:51, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

I would say absolutely yes... IIRC, There is no firm policy on this wiki, and no previous cases I can recall, so your case would set a useful precedent, one we could then codify as accepted practice. While we have had community members choose to stand for RfA again after longer absences I don't think that's really necessary if there is no controversy. There is no controversy around your recent actions that I am aware of (did I miss some?) so this would be pretty cut and dried. Make the removal request at Meta, of course, then ask on our admin page when you're ready to come back and I or another crat will flip it back on... all that said, if it's merely to take a break, and your password is secure, why not just not use the admin rights? There's no real need for turnoff/turnon. ++Lar: t/c 14:26, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
The problem is I an busy, and i cant stop me self from deleting  :(, so i only would like to be a normal user for a few weeks. It would be very nice if you could remove them for 1-2 Weeks (or maybe 3) and give them back to me afterwards. Regards and thank you, abf /talk to me/ 14:35, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Done by Spacebirdy. Now i will enjoy my break and ask you (or Eugene) again in a few weeks. abf /talk to me/ 14:53, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
This is a home wiki for me so I prefer not to do steward actions here, to avoid even the appearance of conflict of interest, even when the request is cut and dried. But I'll be happy to flip it back on when you're so jonesed you can't take it any more :) ++Lar: t/c 15:23, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Hey Larry, could you check if I screwed anything up here. Cheers, giggy (:O) 08:38, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

If i understood what you did, you returned to bullets instead of numbered votes (per our practice here, quaint as it may be) and you removed a double edit link? Looked ok to me. ++Lar: t/c 15:16, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, that's about it. Just checking to see if the Main Page is still intact! Cheers, giggy (:O) 06:28, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Er, you didn't ask me about the Main Page! (goes and checks)... appears to be intact. You are going to try harder if you want to be disruptive, I am afraid! ++Lar: t/c 17:13, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Image namesake usurpation[edit]

Hi Lar! I already got a positive answer by admin Strubble on this matter, but I could use a second opinion. --Llapissera -> talk 19:56, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Though I knew what the guidelines for filenaming are, my modus operandi consists on using the closest form of the subject's name: in this case, I'm naming the pictures as close to the artist's name as possible to provide some intuitional use back in Wikipedias, given that I'm only shooting local people who still has no free image to illustrate its article (Raimon does have a suspitious one). Besides, I've been uploading different pictures of one single artist under the same name in order to post a better picture while getting rid of an older, less suitable one (I'd even encourage anyone to supersede any of my contributions with a better one, but I might not do this to other's work), provided no more than a couple of pictures of every average individual are actually being used later. Thus, may I ask a third administrator to make it a two-out-of-three decision, or should I accept yours as a final judgement? --Llapissera -> talk 02:34, 27 February 2008 (UTC) P.S: thanks again; now I owe you two...
I may not know what I'm talking about, so maybe either ask a third admin or ask on the VP for views, I would be happy to be shown wrong. It's not a huge deal to use a short name but it's a bit odd to rename an image that way. Your reasoning does make sense though. ++Lar: t/c 03:29, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Bot documentation[edit]

Hi Lar,

Finally I started thinking seriously about this :). Funny, I remember exactly how Commons:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage came to existence. I was thinking of doing something using AWB on Commons (can't remember what) and asked on #wikimedia-commons about how to get authorization to run AWB here, because the sole documentation that existed then was this. The answer I got from some admin (whose name I fortunately forgot) was: "If you edit too fast, I'll block you; if you do something which is not consensual, I'll block you" (or something along these lines; I do remember very well the twice-cited "I'll block you" part). You can imagine I immediately gave up the idea of doing anything with AWB, and I have used it only after becoming an admin. Anyway, Yonhatan was online and decided to setup a page for requests for AWB usage, the aforementioned CheckPage. Which has survived until today. I thought you'd like to know some Commons history ;).

Moving forward: what I found silly was that someone had to added to the AWB CheckPage before requesting a bot flag to do a test run with AWB (because the bot flag would be used with AWB). But of course, if someone is doing a test run with AWB without being added to the CheckPage, an admin that will spot the edits and doesn't remember to check if it's some test run by a user requesting a bot flag, will block the poor bot-aspiring account. So, I think that AWB requests and bot flag requests could be transcluded on a same page. This would mean, imho, to take away Commons:Bots/Requests for flags transclusion from Commons:Administrators/Requests and votes, otherwise Commons:Administrators becomes unbearably long. This may not be a very consensual move, but I believe that in the long run, it's a logical one (big wikis have these processes in separate pages, and hey, we're big :)). This would avoid people asking for two things at the same time. Also, I feel that this list is redundant - why keep a list of bots that use a specific software? If they have a bot flag, they go in Commons:Bots, if they don't, they can be on the approved users list (maybe with a small "(bot account)" mention after the username, or something like this).

So, what do you think of these heresies? Patrícia msg 20:04, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

They don't sound like heresies to me, they sound like a rough proposal that needs to be run past others. Would archival or use of collapsible sections allow us to transclude recent stuff? Maybe we should look into transcludable sections like Wikisource has, you can transclude only PART of a page. ++Lar: t/c 20:56, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
You can transclude only part of a page? That's great! I'll look into that then, and come up with a page layout draft. It's easier to propose a change when one can present a palpable proposal. Also, I realized the two listings in Commons:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage might actually be necessary, since the software is scanning that page for authorized users. Patrícia msg 11:42, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
Transcluding part of a page is something that requires a MediaWiki extension to be installed. en:wikisource has it but most other wikis don't... see mw:Extension:Labeled_Section_Transclusion. Here is an example embeddable s:Page:College_Songs_(Waite,_1887).djvu/22, which is then section transcluded here: s:Oh My Darling, Clementine (I am sure there are better examples, ask user:Jayvdb for some, he's a big user of it over on wikisource) That said I'd leave it to you to see if maybe this would be useful? There are ways to fake it (with variables) for testing to see if it is something we want to ask for. ++Lar: t/c 11:56, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Pointless Comment[edit]

Thanks for the pointless comment!.I've already explained myself (here). And please keep that suggestion to yourself because you're in no position to lecture me about photography. btw, i really liked you're pictures. specially this one (which is a quality image!!). Let's begin with the composition, the picture is named "Fallasburg bridge" but i can barely see a bridge!!. Very bland and uninteresting view point. Bad framing. No focus of interest ( 'cause of framing $ view point). Harsh, distracting shadows. Dead, dull colors. Landscape photographers NEVER shoot at this time of day. Very low quality "it was enlarged probably". Evident JPG artifacts. photoshoped ( badly!, someone doesn't know how to sharpen photos. You'll never get a sharp picture with such a large aperture,F2.6!!!, or lousy camera.)...etc. WOW! You're the next Ernst Haas!!!

"It's better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you're a fool than to open it and remove all doubt" ___Mark Twain. --Ilmarry 19:06, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Um, I don't really find this post helpful at all. My point stands, it is better to get your pics to FP by doing good pics than by getting your friends (or socks) to support them. I certainly don't claim to be a photographer that is very good, but I do claim to be able to spot votestacking when I see it. If you'd rather I was more direct, I can be, but if you turn up on my talk page again I suggest you be more polite. Your "friends" weren't blocked, but that can be changed. Please review COM:MELLOW and try again. ++Lar: t/c 19:23, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Possibly unfree image Image:Fab.jpg[edit]

Hello, I'm new here so I'm not sure how to go about this... I'm pretty sure this picture is in no way free. It should be deleted right? Thanks, Indopug 17:02, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

It may well be, looks a bit off to me. If you think it ought to be deleted, you can nominate it at the Deletion requests page... there is a process description there to help you do it, or ask for help if you need it. If you know the site where the image is from, give the URL in your reason text, that's usually the fastest way to validate that the image is unfree. ++Lar: t/c 17:45, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Do you do IRC? I hardly ever have and don't know some of the basics. I'm getting a message about 'nickname registration services' but /motd returns nothing. What do I need to do to associate myself on IRC with my other accounts? I have ChatZilla. Cheers, "Jack Merridew" 13:08, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Davenbelle[edit]

I have also asserted that User:Davenbelle == User:Jack Merridew and the others. I can not prove this, but, really, no one should be doubting this. And, again, I'm not any of the vandals; another pair hit my meta page recently; that's Grawp and we all know it.

FYI, n:User:Jack Merridew on wikinews.org is me, too, as is wikt:JackMerridew TEMP on en.wiktionary.org. I have just now created s:User:Jack Merridew on en.wikisource.org and b:User:Jack Merridew on en.wikibooks.org. species:User:Jack Merridew on species.wikimedia.org and v:User:Jack Merridew on en.wikiversity.org. I will cross-acknowledge these - more like tomorrow, as it's late now. I've enabled email on all of mine.

q:User:Jack Merridew on en.wikiquote.org is not me; wikt:User:Jack Merridew on en.wiktionary.org is not me, either. Those were created by Grawp or some such and I would like to usurp them if possible. I miss any? I'm not intending to do much with most of these, just getting them before Grawp does. Oh, if I messed up any of the prefixes, I'll sort it out tomorrow. Cheers, "Jack Merridew" 15:36, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

If you are going to set up more than 3 or 4 accounts and see a need to cross acknowledge them (which is a good thing) a "WikiMatrix" is a good thing to set up, it makes the work a lot easier, you just point TO it from every account you want to cross link, and from the matrix to that account. Makes an N squared problem 2N instead. See m:User:Lar/WikiMatrix, or m:User:EVula/matrix (the latter has links to many others you can see examples of) I use templates to build mine quickly, you are welcome to use those as well. Also, please see [1] especially the results section. To do usurping, follow local wiki process (usually a request at a bureucrat's noticeboard or the like) ... having your wikimatrix set up for accounts you DO control helps establish that you should get the name given to you instead of letting Grawp hold it for bad intent... Hope that helps. ++Lar: t/c 20:08, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Yikes! accountcountitis is right. I'll put something together along those lines; mebbe not right away. Point of above is clarity about what accounts are mine. I did make an inquiry about usurping one of Grawps accounts on wiktionary - the only edit made with the TEMP account - and was ignored. I will look around all the wikis as I have time. Thanks, and Cheers, "Jack Merridew" 10:48, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
I've put together a matrix on meta; meta:User:Jack Merridew/Matrix. I've including en:User:Jack Merridew (doppelganger) which I emailed Ryan about after my en:block and it was blocked by en:User:Dmcdevit; I briefly logged into it after my block with the intent of acknowledging it; this, I'm sure left a CU-log entry which was noticed. I noticed another old account of mine and have include it; User:D2C2E798-72EF-4EA6-A746-5B45D9610DCE. I've also noticed User:Diyarbakir log - new just the other day - which is not me (I was checking to see if I had ever created it). Please let me know if I've made any typos in it or somehow contradicted anything I've said to you. Cheers, "Jack Merridew" 12:35, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

impersonators[edit]

Hi. I've just found this tool; [2] [3] and would suggest that someone may want to take a critical look at the accounts it gives vs the accounts I've listed at m:User:Jack Merridew/Matrix. I've included en:User:Senang Hati as that was the original name of the en:User:Jack Merridew account - it was renamed and later hijacked by Grawp or his kin. I'm not sure if the en:Senang Hati account should be included in the matrix, but will add it if you suggest it, or I think on it it a bit further. See also en:User:Senang Hati (impersonator) (deleted, but see logs and contribs by impersonator; + Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard/Archive 8#I was harassed by my former account). Cheers, User:Jack Merridew a.k.a. David 10:54, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Hmm... I think on the matrix I would include ONLY those accounts that are yours. Trying to keep track of all your impersonator accounts might be a hard thing since Grawp works so hard at this. ++Lar: t/c 12:48, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
I was only raising the possibility of including the SH account because it was originally mine - only for a few days prior to the rename. I have a lot of Grawp userpages watchlisted, but have no intention of wasting time listing them on anything other than a category page - as done on en:wp. Something like 200 there — and I continue to notice more there, but can't do much about them.
I've looked at the other Senang Hati accounts on other than en since I posted the above, and they're obviously Grawp. I know this because, well, I know his smell. Absent solid proof, I expect they can, and should, all be blocked as impersonators — which may be happening as I type. Cheers, User:Jack Merridew a.k.a. David 13:03, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
  • I've done a few updates to my matrix - added a few bits I missed. I also have documented direct impersonators on the talk page and except for a Romanian user and his meta account I believe they are all Grawp. Some of them are on wikis in languages I don't even recognize. My intent here is to offer clarity of my actions and to aid in dealing with the impersonator accounts. There must be somewhere I can present this to get the impersonator accounts blocked; if they are ignored, they will only cause havoc later. I am even considering asking White Cat to block User:Diyarbakir; but also think it not a good move. I have successfully usurped the impersonator accounts on wikt and wikiquote. Please note that I've just made a post to en:User talk:Jack Merridew about en:User:User:Thomas Jerome Newton - an old account of mine. Cheers, User:Jack Merridew a.k.a. David 13:52, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Probably my talk page here is not the most ideal place for this. If it's project wide, somewhere on meta maybe? ++Lar: t/c 14:19, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
I see that. When I started this thread, the matrix was not all that developed. It's late here; tomorrow, I'll look for a place on meta to bring this all up. FWIW, the whole SUL is years too late and will be a hassle on an ongoing basis. Anyone thought of freezing user space across all projects and migrating to a new 'editor' space as a way to park 5 million vandal accounts and start over with all 'editornames' working across all projects? Just a though I had while composing this message. I've designed some very large-scale software systems and think meta may a good place for me to focus on. Cheers, User:Jack Merridew a.k.a. The contributions of TR001[edit]

Hi Lar,

I would be grateful if you could look at the contributions of TR001. I believe many of the images could well have copyright issues, but I am assuming good faith and hope that you will check them yourself. Thanks Seth Whales 06:55, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Could you be more specific please? I did a spot check, found a fair number of high quality images... it's odd that so many different cameras were used, but that is not completely unheard of. If you are pretty sure an image is a copyvio, try finding it on some other website, and then nominating it as an image for deletion, perhaps. ++Lar: t/c 02:50, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Buckingham Palace images[edit]

Hi there Lar - So over on en.wp, a gallery of photographs of Buckingham Palace suddenly appeared today, clearly professional photographs, but all stored here at Commons. I did a little hunting to find out where they may have come from. Here's one match:

Image:The_Grand_Staircase.1.jpg
Grand Staircase

Unfortunately, I've never run into a Commons copyvio so am not sure where to add tags or what the process is for concern. This same user seems to have uploaded a whole raft of images along these lines, and I'd appreciate your helping me through the process of sorting it out. I'm not on Commons that much, so if you could ping me on en.wp, I'll pop over here and read your advice. Thanks in advance for your help. Risker 21:43, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Ya, I heard about this independently from another source :) ... however those are not QUITE the same image, just taken from almost exactly the same place (check the columns and the positions of the stair rails) However, scope out [4] for possibly more. I am not a brit so I could use some help sorting out which ones are dodgy and if there are any good ones. You can nominate more than one thing at a time if you want, or do it individually, see Commons:Deletion_requests for the description and process. ++Lar: t/c 21:50, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
PS, see also Help:Mass_deletion_request .... oh, and you may want to turn on mail notify here, you can have it notify of any page that changes on your watchlist. ++Lar: t/c 21:54, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions. However, they look like exactly the same photo to me when I do a split screen. There's no doubt that many of the others are taken from that same website. Our "independent" source" even made a big deal about taking that page off his watchlist...as if... Will work on this for a bit after dinner, I guess...or maybe con Giggy into doing it for me ;-) Risker 21:58, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, the answer to where these photos came from is here.[5] Aside from the fact I've found most of the Buckingham Palace ones and some of the Windsor Castle ones at www.royalcollection.org.uk , I wonder if the remainder of the photos from those two places come from their respective guides. Not as sure about some of the other photos; those from the Victoria & Albert could have been taken for personal use, but there are restrictions here.[6] The Waddesdon Manor ones I haven't found elsewhere as of this time. Risker 23:40, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Again, when I look at the one you gave as an example trust me, they don't QUITE match. But on the other hand I'd nom the Buck and Winds ones... the Wadd and V&A maybe let go for now. The uploader hasn't been around for a while... an email to him/her might be polite. Maybe there is an explanation. who knows. ++Lar: t/c 02:22, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

deprecated function in your monobook.js[edit]

Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.

This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.

To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello! I'm the owner of the unified login joystick, but at your project I have the account named joystick.pl, because the one named joystick had already been in use when I registered. Therefore I request for renaming the user nick from joystick in order to vacate it, so as to let me change my user name from joystick.pl to joystick and unify my SUL. --Joystick.pl 13:44, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

You say "at your project" ... At which project? Commons? If so, Commons has a page to request local renames... Hello Lar, I'm a bit unsure in what to do in this case, and would appreciate some help from a more experienced 'crat :). Thanks in advance, Patrícia msg 17:24, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

The password cannot be recovered, even by a dev. If you are convinced of the bonafides of the user, usurp Suwa to something like Suwa_usurped and then Suwatest to Suwa. Are they a good user elsewhere? that's how I would decide whether to do this. (the flip side is if Suwa is the real user and this Suwatest is a vandal.. have to guard against that, use your judgement...) This tool by Luxo runs very slow but may help you decide. Looks clean to me. ++Lar: t/c 17:58, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I just asked Suwa for a crosslink, that should work, hopefully. Cheers, Patrícia msg 18:53, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Copyrighted wiki logos[edit]

See the wiki logos, copyrighted, at the top of User:OsamaK/dupes6, where I'm currently working on dupes. Is there some special reason these copyrighted images are on commons? I read the link but don't see why they're here. RlevseTalk 14:18, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Scrolling down you can see more like this. Hmm. RlevseTalk 14:31, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Images copyrighted or trademarked by WMF are a special exemption to normal Commons policy. Many projects need them and it would be wasteful to require individual projects to host them (think of all the interwiki link boxes for example). It's documented somewhere, although I forget where. They use a special license template... (see for example, Image:Wikinews-logo.bs.png) {{CopyrightByWikimedia}}.
Getting rid of dups is goodness but in at least one case (the puzzle logo and de:wp variants) it was an improvement effort, and it probably makes sense to retain the various copies for a while. ++Lar: t/c 14:33, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

User Bothnia[edit]

Hi Lar. You are no doubt aware of the WikiDrama taking place over SUL, the username 'Islander', and myself and a chap over at sv.wp. Regardless of your views on this matter, I would like to request your help with a harrassment problem I am having with Bothnia. (S)he initially came to my talk page at en.wp to 'protest' about my actions. Avurch stepped in, I tried to defend myself, Bothnia continued. Eventually Cary Bass, Wikimedia volunteer coordinator, stepped in to state that she would contact me regarding the matter. Me and Cary are now in private conversation, via email, and thus the matter is now only between myself, sv Islander and Cary. Another user then joined in, to which I replied that the matter was now being discussed privately. For Bothnia this was not good enough, so (s)he accused me of a cover-up. I re-stated that I wanted publically to end this discussion, as I was in talks with Cary Bass regarding it, and I closed the discussion with {{discussion top}} and {{discussion bottom}}. In reponse to this, Bothnia created a new section, the originally named 'Protest (part 2)'. Again Avurch backed me up, I re-stated that publically the discussion had ended, and Bothnia continued (which, being completely fed up, I reverted).

Now, the reason I've actually come to you here on commons is this. Bothnia is now accusing me of abusing sysop powers, twisting facts (I never stated that anything was policy over at the meta SUL page), (s)he is accusing me of forming a "major scandal", and is claiming that this is now so big that it no longer concerns just me and sv Islander, but in fact the entire WikiMedia project userbase (or as good as). Enough. a) I merely asked sv Islander if he'd be willing to change his username, b) regardless of whether I was right or not, it was none of Bothnia's or anyone else's business, c) I am now discussing the matter privately with Cary Bass, and have requested that these public discussions stop, and yet d) Bothnia continues to harrass me, and inflate this situation out of all proportions.

Regardless of your views on the situation between myself and sv Islander, you must surely see the clear harrassment by Bothnia. I would sincerely appreciate any help you can offer both here and over at en.wp.

Thank you. TheIslander 00:26, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

I've reviewed some of this. There is a lot to review, not helped by being scattered in many places. I confess that this is a thorny mess, both of you have valid claims to the ID. But I think you did yourself no favors with your initial approach. It's not yet clear what policy, if any, will be put in place. I'm not sure exactly what action you want me to take, here on Commons, or on en:wp. Could you rearticulate succinctly what it is you are advocating I do? ++Lar: t/c 02:06, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Succinctly: ignore what is going on between myself and sv Islander, as that is being dealt with privately off-wiki between myself and Cary Bass. Keep an eye on User:Bothnia, as (s)he is harassing me, as I have shown above. Over at en.wp I would probably have warned and maybe blocked her by now, but I definitely don't wish to take this action as it is me that (s)he is harrassing. Thanks for your help, TheIslander 08:05, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Wikimedia logo mosaic/ConstructionNotes[edit]

Is there any plans to start working on other logos? It will be interesting to do Wikipedia's logo as it is mainly white, gray, and black. And if Wikispecies' mosaic logo is composed only from organisms, that will be also interesting. What would you say? OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:28, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I know of no plans. I don't personally have an interest in doing so but it sounds neat. I think the puzzle logo would be hard primarily because it's shades of gray, you would need careful control of which pics went where, rather than just using red/green/blue/white. Using only organism images seems a neat touch for Wikispecies! I am happy to share what I learned in doing this project with others who decide to take it on... ++Lar: t/c 10:15, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
So how do you do the templates and program them? OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:26, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
I first generated data on what colors the cells needed to be (by downsampling a logo to the desired cell dimensions, then roughing it in), then used a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to generate the initial template invocations. I can share that with you if you like. It's not very documented but should be fairly obvious.++Lar: t/c 17:36, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Hiya. I'm perfectly cool with changing it from a speedy to a deletion request for discussion. And if folks judge that I'm being overly strict in my interpretation--then great! We get to keep a really good picture! Werewombat (talk) 03:02, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
Good deal. I think I framed it to avoid the issue, we'll see what others think. ++Lar: t/c 03:05, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
Hey, I hope it doesn't seem like I'm picking on you. I sometimes go off the deep end arguing esoteric points, get a bit competitive supporting some logic that makes some sort of sense to me, dig in my heels. It ends up being a bit of a logic puzzle for me, and I lose sight of the fact that it's not really earthshakingly important to begin with. Please understand it's not personal, and if I've been overaggressive, I apologize. Werewombat (talk) 16:17, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
Picking on me? Hardly! You may have noticed that I changed my !vote to D based on the strength of the arguments... so certainly I have no hard feelings. (I changed it back because I believe Paul is going to come through with the permission... but if not I'll delete it myself) I will go further, you're performing a very valuable service. Please do keep raising issues with images that you think might be problematic, it's how we get things fixed. Best. ++Lar: t/c 04:54, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
And now that it's wrapped up, I'll say kudos to you for contacting and obtaining permission from the sculptor. If our roles had been reversed, I can only imagine I would have thrown up my hands and let it be deleted. Your extra mile here is a real example for all Wikifolk. Werewombat (talk) 05:51, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Keep finding things that need attention, you do a service to the project when you do. ++Lar: t/c 12:15, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Ping[edit]

Seems you're over here tonight more so than the other place. Enough drama for you? I've emailed you a quick question about that en.wp article we discussed the other night, if you have 30 spare seconds to check. Thanks. Risker (talk) 05:15, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

too much drama, actually. here AND there. And how do you know where I am? Stalker! email answered. twice. ++Lar: t/c 05:38, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey, could you please give your opinion here. Thanks, —Giggy 06:23, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing up my account[edit]

Hey dude, Thanks for fixing up my unified account stuff. Muchly appreciated. You said you recreated the account with my old Commons username. I have no intention of using it, so you should probably delete it. (That is, if it's not going to delete any images.) Again, thanks. :) Jeremy Visser (talk) 04:29, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

No worries, mate. There is no way to delete accounts. I suggest you set up a redirect on both pages. Then ask that they be protected. I can send you the pw, send me an email from your new account via the on-wiki email facility. It is polite after renames to find all references to the old account and fix them, IF you haven't set up redirects. That is reason to take control of the old account... ++Lar: t/c 12:13, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Username merge?[edit]

Hello. I just tried to perform a username globalisation, when I noted that I actually and unintentionally have two accounts on the Commons: User:Tve4 and User:TeVe, the last one being the one I have used the most. How do I merge these two, or can I? I want to merge User:TeVe contributions to the User:Tve4, so I can use this username on all projects. Thanks for any advise. –TeVe (talk) 12:36, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

(Just a confimation of the above one. –Tve4 (talk) 12:37, 5 July 2008 (UTC))
Hi. It is not possible to merge accounts, unfortunately. What I would advise you to do is to get the account with more contributions named the way you want it named (if it's not already... you can do so by requesting a rename at COM:CHU) prior to your SUL globalization. the other account's user and user talk pages should be redirected to the primary one, and a note left that contributions are also by the primary. Hope that helps. ++Lar: t/c 16:13, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

I hit the honey pot![edit]

I was browsing flickr for free media and came upon this little gem. 783 Totally free (cc-by-2.0), high resolution marketing and publicity photos from Ford Motor Company!! Yes, it seems to be legit as I know of no other place to get uncompressed originals (see exif data). I is raeping it as we speak, see Category:Taken by Ford Motor Company... \(^_^)/ --Dragon695 (talk) 17:03, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Holy smokes! If that's truely a legit source (and it seems it is!!!) that is awesome. Also, they've been (perhaps inadvertantly) paying attention to what Durova and Jehochman were saying about how to get a jump on your competition by giving out free images that show YOUR products instead of THEIRS... ++Lar: t/c 17:50, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I agree - that's awesome. I've awarded a barnstar at Dragon's en talk page. Nice job! Kelly (talk) 18:25, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

You were mentioned, and I know you a bit better than I know any of the others mentioned. I'm hoping to encourage the good and avoid the bad vis-a-vis Ethical Management of the English Language Wikipedia, on Wikiversity. I tried looking into it a bit, but found the drama boards to be fairly uninformative. I'm not really asking for you to get involved, but would appreciate a few pointers if you have any to offer :-). Thus far they seem to be both constructive and prolific, which we Wikiversitans respect. --SB_Johnny | talk 20:10, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

RfA[edit]

I'm curious why you closed the nomination a day early. Doesn't the voting page say that nominations remain there for seven days? It was added only six days ago with this edit [7]. --EncycloPetey (talk) 05:45, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

I used this time 01:12, 19 July 2008 (UTC) (your signature time on the self nomination) as the start time and closed it at 05:04, 26 July 2008 (UTC). Normally the time that someone signs is the start time, and that was over 7 days. In reviewing the history, though, I see that you waited a considerable time after that to make it public, although I'm not sure why. I missed that at the close. I'll have to start checking that time more closely. (no doubt this is part of why on en:wp, custom is that RfA's start when they are "accepted" which is supposed to happen only after transclusion.)I apologise if you feel I acted wrongly and would like to work with you to rectify matters. What would you like to see happen? Do you think that if I undo the close and the time is extended, that there is a significant chance you would pass? Please let me know. Would you prefer to continue this on my talk, or yours? I like to keep things threaded. ++Lar: t/c 13:09, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
At this point, any damage to the nomination process is done now, so I don't know that re-opening the same vote would necessarily solve anything. Re-opening would not be the same as having left open for another day, and it will be disappointing to not know how the final vote might have gone. I think at this point, the fact the you've acknowledged the error is sufficient in itselfa nd the matter could rest. --EncycloPetey (talk) 16:56, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
The "error" is actually more of a comedy of errors, your initial mistake in not transcluding contributed to it as well. I don't know that I would have expected the outcome to be different, except perhaps numerically... the result, I suspect, barring some surprising shift in sentiment, would be the same. I'm nevertheless willing to reopen and even extend it a few more days if you want. Just let me know. ++Lar: t/c 17:00, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Withdrawn[edit]

Brynn's withdrawn her RfA; as you're a crat, I guess you should finish up. :\ Lewis Collard! (lol, internet) 04:41, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Doesn't take a 'crat for withdraw. Hope you don't mind lar. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 04:49, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Mind???? So I can laze, take glory, credit, etc. without actually working? Heck no. I archived it, though, since you forgot that part. Why did she withdraw, I don't quite get it. Was it something Collard said? Crucify him! ++Lar: t/c 04:59, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Ok, didn't know there was an archive. But I'll remember that for next time. The withdraw was not Collard's fault, he tried to stop it. Short version, she didn't want to deal with the less than kind people that show up on RFA's. It is unfortunate, but it is her decision. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 06:43, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Characterization[edit]

Is there any other way you can describe crosswiki voting other than drive by? Best, NonvocalScream (talk) 18:34, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

That characterisation conveys precisely what I want to say about those votes... if you have a different wording to suggest, that conveys the same connotation of uninvolved folk causing drama, I'm open to a change. ++Lar: t/c 18:53, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
It is perhaps that I take it as a char of my edit. I was one of those previously uninvolved. NonvocalScream (talk) 18:55, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
"char" == "characterization"? Well, looking at your contribs, you at least have some here, and some of those are actual image work. Not enough to run for admin, perhaps, but more than Felonious Monk (talk · contribs), or than Orangemarlin (talk · contribs) do. ++Lar: t/c 19:21, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Proportional Vote Weighting[edit]

If you count voters with 10 or more edits as being fully counted votes, why not proportionally weight those with fewer than 10 votes with weight n/10? That way, someone with nine edits would have their vote weighted at 90%, and someone with one edit would have their vote weighted at 10%. This kind of proportional weighting would reduce the temptation for gaming the system by disingenuosly piling up a record of otherwise pointless edits, just to get one's baseline edit count up for future votes. —Moulton (talk) 07:30, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Feel free to comment on that idea at Commons_talk:Administrators/Requests_and_votes#Suffrage_requirements_for_all_admin.2C_bcat.2C_and_CU_votes. Myself it seems rather complicated. But it may spur some thinking. ++Lar: t/c 13:44, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Good idea. I'll post the proposal and see whose eyes glaze over.  :) —Moulton (talk) 14:58, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you[edit]

Hey Lar, Thanks for welcoming me back into the admin fold here on commons. I thought I might garner a fair amount of opposes, but thankfully that was not the case. To be honest, wikipedia will always be my primary contribution, and featured articles and new article creation are what brought me to wikipedia in the first place. I place them much over the mundane adminship, although I do help out when necessary or asked for. The same applies here, I love contributing images (photographs & svg diagrams/maps) more than daily patrolling afds/ifds. On your suggestion, I did check out what has changed, and new features, asked questions here and there, and got myself acquainted with all updates. I'm currently working on a script (that is using all my free time) to make uploads easier. I'm hoping that would be the next big thing for commons, and image uploading in general. Problem is, I have just 3 days experience in Perl programming, and my script does not seem to work. I've called in the experts to review the code. :) Nichalp (talk) 06:01, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Hmm... regarding your script, I would advise you not to reinvent the wheel. What I mean by that is that there are a lot of scripts out there that might have bits and pieces you can use... nose around. Look at stuff like CommonsHelper, look at Botwiki (mostly python oriented but I put my perl code there... botwiki:Perl:AntiVandalHelper.pl shows how to use the MediaWiki package), look at source of stuff on the toolserver, etc. Programming is fun... Good luck! ++Lar: t/c 13:43, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I took a good look at all those pages in the site. Many of them are useful but none that could help me. See the problem is that till date the only reliable way of mass upload is the file upload script by Eloquence. But that is kinda outdated as far as {{information}} and {{location dec}} information addition are concerned. If I had 100+ images to upload, it would be a real pain to type out the details in a small text file. So, I modified my the file upload script to pick up a CSV file (something that can be easily be created in a spreadsheet). I've listed the code here: w:User:Nichalp/code). So far I am stuck, I can read the CSV file if I run that part independently, but when merged with the FUS, it refuses to read. I've already asked someone to take a look, lets see what they have to say. Nichalp (talk) 19:30, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Commons Scope - Pdf and Djvu files[edit]

I have added some text dealing with these based on the discussion on the talk page. Users are by no means unanimous about which files should be allowed, and I have tried to follow the majority opinion. Thus, the suggestion is that if a Pdf or Djvu file is educationally useful even to a single other Wiki it should be kept. Would you like to comment before this page goes live? Please do so at the bottom of the talk page. Regards, --MichaelMaggs (talk) 21:56, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Commons policy on images of minors?[edit]

Hi Lar, I was recently involved in the deletion of some pages on en:wp by User:Nenetcurry, who has uploaded images here on Commons. They appear to be images of a young girl, and may have been added without the permission of the subject and/or the subject's responsible adult. Does Commons have a policy to address the uploading of images of children without the permission of a responsible adult? I'd kind of like to see these images deleted, but am not sure of the policy here. Thanks. Risker (talk) 16:06, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Well one has gone 'cos it was a dupe :). I think we would need to see an OTRS based model release. Based on you not liking it & me the same I think I'll deleted on grounds of "model age uncertain". Of course if others disagree.... --Herby talk thyme 16:16, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
✓ Done & blocked per en wp. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 16:20, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh thanks, Herbythyme. Seems Lar has talk page watchers here too! I will make note of that "model age uncertain" reason for deletion, as I am sure it will come in handy in the future. I suspect it was a friend or classmate who uploaded, thinking it would be cool for their friend to be in Wikipedia, and not realising the potential for repercussions. Best, Risker (talk) 16:28, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
I was at lunch ... thanks Herby. I would have done the same, but with more hemming and hawing. :) Commons continues to refine its policies in this area, but I for one prefer to err on accidentally deleting something that could have stayed, then sorting it out later, rather than keeping something longer than necessary if we end up deleting. What happened on en:wp btw??? ++Lar: t/c 17:03, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
(ec) No problem. Be careful though - my deletion reasons have been found questionable by others before! Had to do something else & now out of time but may well be worth someone checking SUL for both the commons user & the en one. I know there were other wikis with the name but I'm not sure about SUL. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 17:06, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Your monobook.css[edit]

Hey Larry, I'm having some problems with your monobook.css content, I added it a while ago in my own but now I'm trying to get rid of it but I seem to have a problem. I first tried to just empty my monobook.css but that didn't work so I thought, maybe deleting it would, turned out I was wrong. I tried some other skin & that worked but this one seems to be really stuck in & I can't get it removed. Would be nice if you have any ideas, thanks. --Kanonkas(talk) 16:24, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

hmm... not thinking of anything offhand. Are you sure you did the purge browser cache and server cache thing? (browser cache with cntl-shift-R or whatever your browser uses, and server cache with the action=purge suffix). Other than that, no ideas, sorry. Maybe ask on VP? I wasn't really aware many people used my monobook.css ++Lar: t/c 17:53, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Tried both options, thanks for replying back. Regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 18:33, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
