Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Military ranks[edit]

The navy ranks are already in place, Egyptian Navy ranks. As for the air force, I am working on the files. Whenever they are ready, I shall have add them here. What do you mean when you say you tried to add them, do you have files? If you do, could you please share them with me. Maybe it will help with the air force rank insignia. Yes, I imagine that would be disappointing. I have the silver star, eagle and swords. But the problem is the eagle wings below the shoulder board. As soon as I get it done, it wouldn't be long before I have it uploaded here.

I want to ask you something regarding the different shoulder board insignia, what is present in the small circle on top, for army, navy and air force? At first I thought it was the Eagle, but then I think that was not right. So, I had placed an anchor for the navy, and two crossing things for the army. I couldn't find anywhere what is actually placed. If you know could you please tell me?

One last thing, I checked the Turco-Egyptian rank insignia, and was wondering if those are files you make, if this is the case, why don't you work with .svg files. They are much better, as they can be rendered into different image sizes. See the diagram itself isn't pixels like normal images, but is a set of geometrical equations.

Re: Egyptian Air Force ranks[edit]

Nice work buddy on the Air Force shoulder board insignia. I have been looking for a source for the eagle below to finish working on those, as I have done for the army and navy insignia shoulder boards.

However, I have something to ask you. Have you worked with SVG files before? If you have, is it possible to export those files as SVGs?

SVG files have a great advantage, you can size them to whichever size suits your use. For example File:EgyptianNavyInsignia-Admiral-shoulderboard.svg, you can get it as a 200 pixel image, 500 pixel image, 1000 pixel image, 2000 pixel image, etc, without affecting the quality of the image. It also makes them easier to edit on the long run.

Please get back to me even if you could not export the files as SVGs, as I have this template. I think the silver star and Saladin eagle here could replace the ones you have. Let's set up a way where I can send you the original file. And maybe also the original material I used for the army and navy non-commissioned officers

Anyway, fantastic work! I'm glad somebody took it up to themselves to finish up with the air force shoulder board insignia.

Egyptian uniforms[edit]

Hello,

I noticed you have uploaded illustrations of egyptian military uniforms. I also noticed you have sourced them as "own work."
This is inaccurate. You have based those uniforms on deviantArt illustrations, mainly of my own making.
