Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.

Överkategorisering[edit]

Hej. Kul med alla nya bilder som bot:en laddar upp!

Det verkar dock vara en hel del överkategorisering i förhållande till rådande struktur. Går det att göra något åt detta? Det blir ett väldigt städarbete så som det är nu. Exempel: File:Lugnås kyrka - KMB - 16000200165329.jpg Bilden på Lugnås kyrka har korrekt skapats i Category:Lugnås kyrka, men den har fått även lagts direkt i Churches in Mariestad Municipality och Buildings in Mariestad Municipality. Då Category:Lugnås kyrka från start är underkategori till Churches in Mariestad Municipality som i sin tur är underkategori till Buildings in Mariestad Municipality så blir bilden i och med detta överkategoriserad. @I99pema: Hej! Jo, vi är medvetna om det. Själva uppladdningsomgången kommer att avslutas inom ett par dagar. Vi kommer då köra en runda över alla filer som fått en specifik kyrkokategori och ta bort eventuella Municipality-kategorier. Om bilden tagits inuti kyrkobyggnaden, och det finns en kategori som heter "interior of x church/kyrka", skall bilden läggas där, och du behöver inte direkt använda kategorin "x church/kyrka". J 1982 (talk) 16:30, 5 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@I99pema: Boten för att plocka bort kommunkategorierna från bilder i kyrkokategorierna tuggar nu. Hojtar till när den är färdig.
@J 1982: Problemet är att det ofta saknas metadata som säger att bilden var tagen innuti kyrkan, därför kunde de kategorierna inte automatiskt sättas./André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 19:37, 5 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@André Costa (WMSE): Fint. Hur kommer det sig att boten i uppladdningen misslyckats med att identifiera så många kategorier, och finns det något som kan göras i efterhand? Exempel File:Nittorps kyrka - KMB - 16000200162928.jpg blev inte lagd i Category:Nittorps kyrka, vilket förövrig gäller de flesta bilder i Category:Churches in Tranemo Municipality --I99pema (talk) 08:28, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@I99pema: Problemet var att det inte fanns någon data genom vilken vi exakt kunder säga vilken kyrka som avbildades. Men eftersom det fanns så pass många kyrkbilder så gjorde vi en speciallösning utifrån de kyrkokategorier som vi automatiskt kunde identifiera. Anledningen till dubbelkategoriseringen var att denna speciallösning inte sa till övriga kategoriseringsmekanismer att bilden redan var hanterad. Anledningen till att så många kyrkkategorier missades är en kombination av att kyrkonanmn inte alltid anges på samam sätt, att strukturen i kategoriträden inte alltid ser likadan ut samt i vissa fall att commonscat länkarna från Wikidata har pekat fel.
Bortsett från de insattser jag nu gjort (vilket hanterade felet jag nämnde ovan) så tror jag inte att det är något annat som man automatiskt kan åtgärda. Sedan kan man självfallet skapa fler Wikidatakopplingar, rätta Commonscat kopplingar för kommuner, sakap nya kategorier etc. men det blir då inför framtida importer av liknande slag. Däremot ska det vara så att den manuella kategoriseringen här resulterar i att RAÄ uppdaterar sina kopplingar på bilderna så att de sedan länkar till en unik kyrka. Category:Media contributed by RAÄ: needing categorisation (no exact match)[edit]

Går det på något sätt att få denna kategori att automatiskt tas bort när man sorterar in i en kategori? Jag ser det som ett problem att vi nu gör dubbelarbeten i uppstädandet. Om en användare utgår ifrån kategorin Churches in xxx för att sortera in / skapa upp rätt underkategori så kommer bilden ändå att ligga kvar som okategoriserad. Jag ser samtidigt att andra användare utgår ifrån denna kategori när flyttarna görs, vilket då kan bli ett onödigt extraarbete. @I99pema: Ett rimligt steg är nog att gå igenom bilderna i no exact match-kategorin och se om de även ligger i en kategori med " kyrka" i namnet. Åtminstone för kyrkorna (som utgör merparten av uppladdningen) verkar det som ett säkert sätt att hitta bilder där åtgärdskategorin kan tas bort automatiskt. Det låter bra. Man skulle sedan även kunna köra en städning på " kapell". Mitt mål är att gå igenom samtliga län och sortera in lösa bilder i rätt kategori. Få kyrkbilder i Östergötlands län[edit]

Det är väldigt få bilder uppladdade i Östergötlands län. Det saknas exempelvis helt i Boxholm Category:Listed churches in Boxholm Municipality. Är detta som det skall, eller har något gått fel i upplandningen av detta län? --I99pema (talk) 12:30, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@I99pema: Tack för rapporten. Det verkar ha blivit en felaktig koppling mellan bildfilens id och beskrivningens id. Märk gärna sådan bilder med Category:Media contributed by SMM: wrong image så ska vi försöka undersöka vad som orsakat det. Hej @I99pema: . Jag upptäckte nu att beskrivningarna faktiskt stämmer och länkar till rätt objekt. MEN det är konstverk med en fram och baksida. Tittar man noggrant i beskrivningen så talar den om framsidan och frånsidan, och den teckning du länkade till är just frånsidan. =) Den negativa nyheten är att det finns ca. 240 sådana bilder (listade på phab:P6954)/André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 12:24, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hej, laddar du objekter, ladda de i resp. kategorier, esp. om sådana finns! T.ex. File:U513_Rimbo_kyrka_-_KMB_-_16000300028311.jpg ska ju in i Category:Upplands runinskrifter 513, eller åtminstone Category:Runestones, Uppland! Municipality har ingenting att göra med medeltid och det går inte att hitta sådana bilder utanför Upplandska stenar. Annars lämna dem kvar på kmb sidan, det blir lättare att hitta de där! Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

as the latter is a part of the former. Furthermore, most of these pictures did not make the cut to compete in the final, which the first mentioned entity could say to represent.

Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in Iran with bad coordinates[edit]

Alicia, I just noticed this in this GLAM newsletter about Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in Iran with bad coordinates. You are right that bad coordinates are replicated into SDC. But as you said it makes it also easier to spot. In fact the WLM images for Iran were much worse as you think. With geogroup I thought I had corrected all of the incorrect coordinates for Iran. Many had lat and lon interchanged. Your query had a slightly different angle so some are still incorrect. The source of the mistakes originates for the lists on fa: wikipedia. In November last year I managed to correct this (see for example this. As Farsi numerals are different form the Roman numarals I used excel to find/replace thoste, then intecahnded lat and lon, and changed the numerals back........
I also checked all other WLM coordinates, but there were much less coordinate mistakes, which I corrected too.
For images from Wiki Loves Earth Brazil there still is a challenge. See also this (archied) request. HenkvD (talk) 12:20, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fel information på bilder från RAÄ[edit]

Hej! Har hittat två bilder med fel information. Tittar man på andra bilder från Category:Svenneby gamla kyrka är det uppenbart att de inte är samma kyrka. Bilderna verkar istället vara inifrån Category:Svenneby kyrka. Har mailat ata(at)raa.se om felet, och fått ärendenummer I-2210-0008.

WLE-bilder med märkligt depicts (P180)[edit]

Hej!

Igår kväll tittade jag igenom lite bilder från WLE Sverige och upptäckte då att AliciaFagervingWMSE-bot (talk · contribs) hade gjort några märkliga depicts (P180)-redigeringar. Kaninhålet ledde mig vidare till Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in Armenia & Nagorno-Karabakh där jag upptäckte att boten gjort många redigeringar (se sökning) där Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in Armenia & Nagorno-Karabakh‎ (Q109484553) satts som värde för depicts (P180), vilket känns märkligt. -- LevandeMänniska (talk), 13:15, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your opinion about OpenRefine and its Wikimedia Commons features: two (!) surveys[edit]

Hi! You have recently tried/used Wikimedia Commons features in OpenRefine (uploading files, or editing existing files). I'm curious to hear how this has gone, also if you only briefly tried these features.

To help the OpenRefine team with future improvements, it would be immensely helpful if you would be willing to spend a bit of time filling in two surveys. (Yes, two! Each of them uses a different method and (open source) platform).

  1. A first, classical, survey (fully anonymous) where you can tell us how you use the Commons features in OpenRefine, and how you (want to) learn to use them better;
  2. A second, more experimental survey (also fully anonymous) in which you prioritize the features that matter most to you. This second survey is a bit strange in that you can 'just keep clicking'. Feel free to use it as long or as briefly as you want; you can stop any time. Please also add your own suggestions!

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category[edit]

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:100 000 Bildminnen/Photographs by Anna Rudbeck.
