Thanks for uploading File:Man Reading Newspaper.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Deletion nominations[edit]

Hi, 'author request' is only a valid reason for deletion within a week after upload. Jcb (talk) 23:24, 21 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jcb! So is there anything I can do at this point to delete all my uploads? It was a major misjudgment on my end that is affecting our small startup and after very careful consideration I decided it's best to remove them. Any help or suggestions, please? Videoplasty (talk) 17:38, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is, if you release your files into a free license, this is irrevocable. Reusers, possibly outside Wikimedia/Wikipedia, must be able to trust that the free content they are using will remain free forever. If we delete the files from our servers, it will be hard for possible reusers to provide evidence that the files they are using are really free. I am not accusing you of anything, but I have seen situations in the past where uploaders somehow got their contributions deleted from our servers and then started to send high bills to reusers, accusing them of copyright violation. Jcb (talk) 17:47, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that possibility, however, it never crossed my mind. I don't have any problem whatsoever with people who are already using it. I imagine new people won't be able to start reusing them if the files are deleted from the servers, so they have nowhere to find them. I understand that in theory they might have been uploaded to another similar place that distributes free files, but in practice, Wikimedia is the only place like that that matters. My Google Webmasters Tools shows only 3-4 people giving attribution, so the files didn't manage to get used by too many people or get distributed far, so I hope it's not too late. Is there anything that I can do at this point? I really insist that this is very important and promise that I have no intention of accusing anyone of copyright violation (as long as they give attribution, of course). Videoplasty (talk) 18:43, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You can to a request at the Administrators Noticeboard in which you explain what your problem is and in which you request a 'courtesy deletion'. It's important that you explain as detailed as possible what the impact of this situation is for you. I think your chances are small, but it may be worth trying. This way you have at least the eyes of several admins on the case, who may have their own thoughts. Jcb (talk) 18:51, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alternative proposal[edit]

Hello Eduard and other people of Videoplasty,

Maybe having the images y'all uploaded here deleted isn't a great idea, they could still positively affect your company, for example look at this license: {{John Ferguson (Sportstune.com)}} which states that whomever wants to use any of the images tagged with this license are obligated to link to their website and name them (the photographer/scanner) by name, this is something y'all could do too, make it mandatory for anyone using your images to link to Videoplasty either as a website or as an app in Google Play or whatever. The license would remain free to use and share (even commercially), however those using your images are forced to link to you and if they don't do so then they're infringing on your copyright ©. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:17, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Changes[edit]

I made some changes to your files to better inform re-users about the licensing terms. See for an example File:Man Waving Hand GIF Animation Loop.gif. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 04:57, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Further discussion[edit]

@Amada44: I came back to do a final check and see if everything is fine and as we agreed, only to find out that some of the GIF files have been resized back to their original upload resolution due to "gif error". I've counted around ±40 of them. Judging by that standard, then most files should be resized back to their original resolution. The only reason we agreed to keep the GIFs was not for them to be usable in any form (we agreed there isn't much educational value), but for people who already used them to have proof that they were once uploaded here, so they can't be sued. Even if broken or pixelated, the GIFs resized by @Alexis Jazz: were good enough to be recognized for that purpose. I only agreed to that once I saw a couple of examples. This was the compromise we reached together after a long debate, our mutual agreement.

I see you even resized some again yourself to provide a better quality conversion in the same low resolution at 100px and while you're technically correct, this is not the quality that I've seen in the examples and approved and it happened after my approval of all the files already resized and uploaded by Alexis Jazz. I want to thank you all for your efforts in resizing, uploading again, modifying the files and dealing with the entire situation. - but I would ask you to please revert them back to what Alexis Jazz provided initially. Then I'm happy to consider this closed, thank you! -- Videoplasty (talk) 12:35, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

Volunteer goodwill only goes so far, you know.. While I was able to automate most of the resizing, the revision deletion @Amada44: did appears to have been mostly manual labour.

The resized GIF files were never supposed to be broken. The examples weren't broken either. I hadn't visually inspected all the resized files and some turned out to be broken. For example Compass 2. I loaded some of those (and Amada44 as well) in a drawing program to resize them using another method. We could've said "fuck it, put the original back!", but we didn't. It has also never been said the files were supposed to be completely unusable. They might still be used as tiny icons.

If you provide a list of the files that were reverted back to the original I can take a look at them. That's about as much as I can and am willing to offer. If you're not happy with our service, you can apply for a refund of the full amount you have paid by posting a message here.

@Alexis Jazz: I'm afraid that's exactly what seems to have happened with some of the GIF files (ie: revert to original). I guess that's why they still show as my own uploads. I'm talking about most GIFs that appear here on my uploads page, some with 250x250 resolution for icons for example [VideoPlasty Uploads]
Let's please keep them at the agreed resolution too and then it's fine. Of course, with rev del included, so we can all finally move on and forget about this whole thing. Thanks! -- Videoplasty (talk) 15:47, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that I had processed them all. But as @Alexis Jazz: said, make a list or upload the 100px version yourself and I will delete the high res version. Amada44  talk to me 09:16, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
