Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

@Hamaredha: The picture was removed because according to Iraqi copyright law, all government works (including ballots) are copyrighted for 50 years after publication. Only non-copyrighted files are permitted on Wikimedia Commons. If you want to upload a copyrighted file, you can do so on individual Wikipedia sites, but they must be uploaded to each site (different languages) separately. Hey! Indeed it does. I have just returned home from a year in Turkey (where Wikipedia is blocked, so I have only had limited access to it). Turkish polls[edit]

Hi again. The Turkish polling graph will be updated regularly, you don't have to remind me every month. I appreciate that you're paying close attention to it, but given that there aren't that many polls coming out each month, and the changes are not very dramatic, it doesn't need an update every week. Tunisian colors[edit]

Hello. I would like us to eventually agree on a common color table for the tunisian parties, considering the english speaking and french speaking wiki often use contents from each others. I have come to agree on the use of #C49A6C for "Courant de l'amour" and #000000 for "Machrouu Tounes", taking from their logos. For "L'Alternative tunisienne", however, I find the color you picked of a too vivid blue, and I hope we could agree on #033274 which I took from the shade of the logo, and only lightened it a bit so it doesn't look too close to black. Same goes with your color for "Mouvement du peuple". I'm not colorblind in any way, but I find it really hard to distinguish it from the color next to it on your rendering, with both parties blurring into one bunch of seats. I hope we could agree on a slightly different color : #FF363A, which is a bit darker, while still coming from the logo. On a completely different matter, I think it would be better to place the independent list seats on the center, as they aren't on the far right, but neutral by definition. @Aréat: Absolutely. I agree with the change for L'Alternative tunisienne (I only initially made the color vivid blue to distinguish it more from the black of Machrouu Tounes), and I believe the color you selected for the Mouvement du peuple is acceptable if it is distinguishable from the shades of red used by Nidaa Tounes and Au cœur de la Tunisie. In terms of the independent list seats, I generally have no personal preference; on enwiki the general consensus is to group all the independents together, but the side they're placed on does not necessarily matter since they can have different ideologies from each other anyway, although they are usually listed on the right side by convention/tradition (examples of this include legislatures such as Ireland's, Mexico's, etc). Well, I tend to disagree with the practice, as these diagrams are often used to judge of the results of the left and right leaning parties, and placing them on the right give a false look. Also, as they do tend to have different ideologies, placing them on the center is more realistic, in my opinion. But, yes, they must be grouped together. Stand-your-ground law map[edit]

I saw that you edited the stand-your-ground law map recently. Can you please edit it further so that Ohio is shown as a stand-your-ground law state (dark green)? SB 175 passed the Senate on the 18th last month and has been on DeWine's desk long enough that, without a veto, it's now law and will be in effect within ~90 days. Thanks, and have a good one. yes, but take care, crwflags.com has a lot of mistakes on many of their flags. Often they don't use the flags which are in official use by the canton governments. And amazon.de tries to sell the flags. You need good trusty sources and one of them is this official publication (2019). Thank you, – Doc Taxon

@TheTaraStark: sure! I generally use one of a few different ways. The first is to save the file under the "optimized SVG" format in Inkscape. The second is using an external optimizer like SVGOMG or Vecta Nano. Regardless, you should check to make sure the files render correctly on Wikimedia sites, as they currently use a different renderer. Please stop overwriting files[edit]

Hi, I have reverted your overwriting of the Canton of Bern Flag. Please stop overwriting existing designs. This has gone on for too long and needs to stop. At the moment all the canton's flags with the name "Flag of Canton of..." are using the same source and same colors and are a set so they need to stay as is. If you want to upload a new version with different colors you are free to do so but please upload it as a different file. By overwriting you are messing up the display of the flag and COA in many Wikipedias. Please note that I have tried to upload your version as a seperate file but was unable as the system still considers it a duplicate of the existing file. It may take a moment to autorize the upload. Syracuse, NY City Flag[edit]

Hello @HapHaxion I'm the designer of the First Light flag of Syracuse, NY. I'd like to link my official First Light flag SVG file that I uploaded in Wikimedia Commons to the flag image displayed on the wiki for Syracuse, NY. That file will hold official info regarding the flag. I linked it yesterday but seems as if you've reverted back to your unofficial version of the flag. Can we resolve this? @FirstLightSYR: What can be done is that the two can be merged so both items point to the same file name (in this case per convention the file name would be Flag of Syracuse, New York). I've already updated the description under that file name to more closely reflect yours, and will apply the necessary template to get the merge. I also double checked to see if anyone reverted or replaced anything on the Syracuse article but after checking the dates on your file and mine it looks like yours was uploaded later. @FirstLightSYR: Ah I see the problem. Per COM:UAL, in order to overwrite an existing file, your account must be autoconfirmed (have 10 or more edits and be four or more days old). Looking at your contributions, you fulfil the first requirement but not the second. My guess is if you wait a couple more days the problem should hopefully resolve. In the meantime, if there's any changes you need made to any of the files you've uploaded you can post a message here and I can try and perform that edit until the time period requirement elapses. @FirstLightSYR: I haven't co-opted anything; as stated in the file description of the main flag, I only created the vector file and am claiming no ownership over the original design. The original author of the design is listed. The variant files you uploaded still have your username in the description. Wikimedia projects are a collaborative effort, and uploaded items can be licensed as required by the original copyright owner (such as whether free entirely or with certain conditions here on Commons; or limited fair use on some local wikis) if not a user's own work (if it was claimed to be such, that would be stated). Either way the creator is usually always listed in the description. I would also recommend viewing COM:HD and COM:VP (as well as Commons:Community portal) if you have further questions. Coat of arms of the Royal Norwegian Navy[edit]

Hi,

I see no reason as to why we should need two coats of arms of the Royal Norwegian Navy when both are in the SVG format. I have been updating a fair amount of the Norwegian military coats of arms here on Wikimedia Commons and am planning on creating quite a few coats for the Royal Norwegian Navy. As the coat you have made is closer to the design as used by the Norwegian military itself than File:Coat of arms of the Royal Norwegian Navy.svg, I was planning on using your coat of arms as the baseline for the new coats. I am also working on organizing and categorizing the coats here. Therefore I wonder if it would be fine by you if I uploaded your file to overwrite the other coat, and then send in a deletion request for your file. Any thoughts? @Worldlydev: Honestly I'd be fine either way, although I uploaded the one I did separately on purpose since the images and colours are different (they can be listed in the "other versions" field if needed as well). Hi HapHaxon, I was trying to add a Mongol War banner I sourced from https://artsandculture.google.com/story/mongolian-empire-the-national-museum-of-mongolia/TwWB3jMjdJwYKg?hl=en to the the Mongol Empire page, but it got removed. I had a discussion with the person who removed it and they claimed that since it was a battle banner and not a symbol of the mongol empire it shouldn't be added. @Colohisto: unfortunately, as the file is upload protected, I can only request an admin or someone with appropriate permissions to update the file. The message I posted on the talk page was the most recent action taken regarding the situation, and as of yet no one has responded. I've made requests on the admin noticeboard as well per Category:Commons protected edit requests due to the lack of response, but with no success.
