Hello. Categorise/lang and CatDiffuse/lang are on the correct templates, I believe. {{CatDiffuse/lang}} is on {{CatDiffuse}}. {{Categorise/lang}} is on {{Categorise}}.

Your browser may be looking at an old version. In the Firefox browser hold down the "Shift" key while clicking the reload button at the top of the browser. This will pull up the very latest version of the template.

I changed {{Categorise}} because it was taking up too much space in my opinion. So I got rid of the top and bottom margins. Plus I think it reads better, and makes more sense now. I also think it looks better with the light blue background, and the image to the left. People might pay more attention to it now. Here is the old version:

http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/8374/categorisenewimagebj8.png is a good image. I think the new, smaller template is getting better results than the old, larger templates. And more people seem to be adding the new template to categories now because it is smaller and more clear in its instructions. Several people thought the old template was too large. It was pushing other things down the page past the first screen. I don't know what else could be written to make it clearer. I think the current image is good, and that the template would be clearer if both images were used. One on each end of the template. --Timeshifter (talk) 15:18, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Administrative notice

[edit]
Deutsch

Dear D-Kuru/archiv/2008. I am writing to you to inform you that because of inactivity, you may lose your adminship on Commons.

Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a two-week poll on the proposed policy's talk page).

If you want to keep your adminship, you have to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days. Note that if you don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will then lose the adminship anyways.

Thank you,
abf /talk to me/ 11:18, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

The file should be immediately keep in my opinion. Yug (talk) 19:27, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

I checked the number of pages transcluding {{CatDiffuse}} versus {{Categorise}}. See:

{{Categorise}} is already more popular. Probably because it is named with one word instead of combining parts of 2 words. So it is easier to remember. Plus it better captures the attention of people. The overall design is good. The image tells people not to file stuff here. So the image is important in my opinion.

{{CatDiffuse}} says "This category requires frequent maintenance to avoid becoming too large." That is not as clear. It makes it sound like it is OK to file stuff here most of the time.

We could ask people to remove the templates from categories once their images are all categorized in subcategories. That might help. --Timeshifter (talk) 22:10, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

"The overall design is good." I agree, but maybe we can create a better one...
Who would be as crazy and would clean up several categories?
I redisigned the template again User:D-Kuru/Template:Categorise/2.0#2: It's a big bigger now and I included a link to possible tutorial page. I think that a small tutorial is essential, because a) Category:CommonsRoot is the main category of all main categories and b) it's more effective if you can just copy something. Of course the tutorial should be available in several languages. Tell me what you think about it
--D-Kuru (talk) 16:46, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Commons:Categories is already linked from the template. It is a tutorial. I believe that "Search for more categories here" is essential to the template. If you also want to link to a short tutorial that is a good idea. Maybe a link from something short like this:
"Short tutorial"
I don't think though that it needs to be separated to the right as "How to categorise?" is now.
I think people much prefer smaller templates. So it is better in my opinion to keep the text down to 2 lines on most monitors. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:59, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Commons:Categories is too much information for new people on commons. I don't know many users who really read instructions on commons. I'm sure that many people don't read this instructions, because reading them is much longer than dooing the wrong thing. Commons:Categories gives now quick information for questions which turnes up while working. People categorise image in a flase category, because it would take much more time to read everything. (I know that you don't need to read everything so that you're able to create new categories, but new users don't know)
Category:CommonsRoot is too big for many users, because they don't know where they can find something (I think that even I would have to search for a quite long time). Because users, who worked on commons for some time, usually know what they do and how to do it, they usually don't need Commons:Categories and Category:CommonsRoot. Maybe a link to the categorysystem of Commons is essential, but I think Category:CommonsRoot is the wrong way.
The idea of separting the template is that you see an empty space where you find that what you (maybe) searched for. A big template with a bit free space is maybe for eyecatching than a small, crowded one. Short Tutorial is a good idea, because it tell everybody exactly that what it should be.
No matter if people like small templates or not. I don't want to include much more text than there is already written.
Category:Bong vs. Category:Bongs - An admin told some time ago that you usually use the plural for categorynames. For example: Category:Spoons, Category:Automobiles, Category:Trees,... If not possible (Category:Joint) or there is no plural (Category:Yellow) you use the singular of course. It's also written on Commons:Categories: "Category names that refer to objects or groups of people should generally be in plural form: Category:Tools, Category:Artists, Category:Lakes, etc, as opposed to Category:History, Category:Weather, Category:Music."
--D-Kuru (talk) 18:55, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
I don't think there should be 2 categories Category:Bong and Category:Bongs. I agree that the plural version is better. But unless someone moves many of the images then the singular version is better for now in my opinion. In other words, creating a second category without moving many of the images is confusing to most people. I guess a category redirect could be added to the singular category. I just noticed only one image in Category:Bongs, and no category redirect from Category:Bong. So people would not find all the images.
If you can find a short tutorial, then you could link to it from {{Categorise}}. At the top of the short tutorial a link to the long tutorial could be added. This way people could look for more answers in the long tutorial if necessary.
Do you know a better place to start browsing for categories than Category:CommonsRoot? I don't. It is not linked from the sidebar, and so I think it is important to link to it from the template. Most readers have never been there, or even know how to get there. --Timeshifter (talk) 05:01, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
I told a bot to move all files from cat:bong to cat:bongs, but it seems that the bot is a bit busy right now. I think that it just takes a bit more time.
There is no short tutorial, because on commons everything has to mentioned in the same infopage (don't ask why). I also thought about including a link to com:cat. I thought about a "basic tutorial" an an "advanced tutorial" on a different page or with a new headline (depends on how big the basic tutorial will be).
There is a good entrance on the german main page of commons. Have a look at the right half side at the translated version of translate.google.com. In the top right corner is a short list of categories which could be used.
I know that the whole right side would be too large for a small template, but I'm sure that there is a good way to include it.
--D-Kuru (talk) 10:54, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Can we copy this thread to Template talk:Categorise? It is less work than keeping up 2 threads on 2 talk pages.
Where does one ask for this type of bot help? I could use it for changing category names.
What is com:cat? It is red-linked.
I think the Main Page would be better than Category:CommonsRoot for people to search for more categories. So we could change that link in the template.
A basic tutorial would be helpful. --Timeshifter (talk) 15:10, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Good idea. You can copy it.
You can ask for that servive on User_talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. For moving a category just place {{move cat|old name|new name}} below "move requests".
com:cat should be COM:Cat
--D-Kuru (talk) 15:49, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Edit: Seems that the bot has some problems right now. Only a few edits a day isn't the ordinary day.

Question about a cat change

[edit]

I agree with most of your recent changes I've noticed, but not this one. I would presume that Category:Hemp related illustrations is for illustrations where hemp is the subject matter; these are paintings on various topics that happen to be on hemp cloth, and I would think that Category:Hemp was more correct. I leave it to you to make the decision, though. - Jmabel ! talk 06:18, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

I just moved it, so that Category:Hemp is a bit emptier. However, if somebody sells "paintings on hemp cloth" the painitings are hemp related, even Category:Hemp related illustrations is as a single category not the best idea.
I multicategorised the picture in cat:hemp and cat:hemp related illustrations. I will move the picture into another category if there is a better named category.

WTF?

[edit]

You should ask CommonsDelinker to replace dupes before delete them! Now Delinker remove deleted images from articles instead of replacing them.--Ahonc (talk) 16:15, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

I hoped that I'm faster than CommnsDelinker, seems that I wasn't. I collected them on the previewpage so that I don't edit them every few images.
I've added the rest so that they don't get removed.
--D-Kuru (talk) 16:20, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
And what to do with images which removed from articles?--Ahonc (talk) 16:23, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
So, how did you do it so fast? :)--Ahonc (talk) 16:26, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
I thought about that probelm for a while and I don't see any solution. The old pictures aren't used any longer and it seems as if the usage-function is off again. I hope that there are wikipedian out there who see the missing images and replace it or contact me (if I'm right, CommonsDeliker includes the reason of the deltion on commons in the reason of the delition on the wikipedian project where an image gets removed. SO it shouldn't be too hard to find the new images)
I don't like the dupes tool very much (furthermore the dupes tool uses the usage-funtion), but I also don't want to submit every 6 images (my standart, because of the width of firefox) a new side on CommonsDeliker's page. Deleting duplicates sometimes really suck...^^
So fast? It took me about 40 minutes to collect the universal replace commands...
--D-Kuru (talk) 16:42, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Fast because you make edits after two minutes after my edit. :) I also think that dupes' tool is not good (I usually add 10 rows and then save page). CommonsDelinker sees Deletion log and removes images from it. That's why you should delete images AFTER the replacing by CommonsDelinker and adding notification by CommonsDelinkerHelper.--Ahonc (talk) 19:51, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

--Kolossos (talk) 21:14, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Ethiopian naked baby (Image:HamerVillage7.jpg)

[edit]

Hello, I was VERY surprised by this request, but you can delete this picture if you please, as there is another one of much better quality anyway, and unquestionably innocent ! See Image:HamerVillage1.jpg. But again, this was totally unexpected... Ji-Elle (talk) 18:59, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

HamerVillage1.jpg is much better.
The reason why I started the deltion request is that I'm not sure if this image is lawful for commons. As I wrote in the deletion request: "Some time ago images of naked girls got deleted too"
Let's see what other user say.

I do not agree about deleting this Peugeot badge. I have taken this picture myself, so I am not violating any copyright... --Alfacevedoa (Talk)

If you think so integrate it in the deletion request.
Even you have taken this picture on your own, you can violate a copyright if you create a derevativ work. A logo doesn't become free only because you create a derevativ work of it. The logo is still copyrighted!
--D-Kuru (talk) 10:59, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

As the person who tagged Image:SpiderQueen.jpg for deletion, I should point out that it's not a screenshot. The point is that someone has created an image of a game character, and that that the character is under copyright; as such the image is a derivative work, which can't be released under a license suitable for Commons (or Wikipedia, where it was being used); attempting to release it under such a license made it a copyright violation. 212.32.72.167 12:00, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Even it's fan art, if the self-made fan art looks like the real character there is no real difference between a screenshot and the own work.
Both ends in the violation of copyright. If the image gets deleted for beeing a fan art or for beeing a screenshot is not important.
If the uploader wants to use this image he can upload it under the fair use licence on en.wiki.
--D-Kuru (talk) 12:15, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I know. I am, after all, the chap who tagged it as a copyright violation. But deleting an image under an inaccurate summary could give the uploader a false idea that they are in the right. 212.32.117.7 19:11, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
If the author uploader has any questions he is free to aks me ;-)
"are all commons admins this thick?" Not all, but some get If they delete the same copyvios every day. Maybe I'm a bit thicker than the average.

Re: "your edit on COM:WP"

[edit]

I would have preferred you asked for clarification on the Village Pump where I made the comment originally; you may not be the only person confused. Anyway, I assume you meant this edit rather than the one you actually linked? If so, here's what I said: "Child porn is as in-scope as real pornography is, and we have plenty of pictures of that." Of course pornography (I should have said "adult pornography" rather than "real") is in-scope. The various Wikipedias all have articles on pornography and we have tons of pictures of it on the Commons. The only reason we don't have child porn photos is because they're illegal (and possible because they're grossly immoral, but we have pictures of lynchings and whatnot here so I'm not so sure on that). I hope that clears up my comment. Powers (talk) 14:58, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

You're right. I meant your suggested edit. I just mixed two of your contibutions.
What you mean with "we have pictures of lynchings"? Are you talking about something like Category:Firing squad? If Yes: Do you think that CP is as immoral as pictures of lynchings?
--D-Kuru (talk) 11:45, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
I mean something like this: Image:Lynching-of-woman-1911.jpg. And yes, I find that just as repellent as child porn. But that's beside the point; the only point I was trying to make is that pornography is within the scope of the site's mission, because it is an encyclopedic topic. I think you want to know whats up with your picture. I think Template:No source since/es will help you more than I can. You just have to add information description (what is this); source (where is it from); date (when it was taken/created); author (who has created this image); permission (the correct licence - I don't know which the correct licece is, but I don't think that it's {{GFDL}}
I told Anna, who is a native spanish speaker, to help you so that that image gets fixed.

[edit]

Hi D-Kuru, I noticed you changed (here) the license of the image Image:Logo wk 2018 Be-Ne.png to PD-ineligible. I don't think that is correct. I think it is a standard logo and copyright protected. And therefore needed to be deleted. Miho (talk) 15:46, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

In fact it's a logo, but I would say that's ineligible for copyright. However, you are free to start a deletion request. I've started a discussion on the Admins noticeboard. Maybe you want to write your thoughts there.

You can do it any thing with my picture and all my work if you want because I´m tired.Too mutch work on this "scope" for nothing and finally I only recive discutions. Good bye.

I'm talking about Commons's project scope. The meaning of "out of scope" is that it does not follow the guidelines of Commons's scope.
Not in scope are fe. personal artwork and unused, non educational files. Even your picture is a nice one I couldn't think of a use in a project of wikimedia.
May you want to upload the first one of the picture series. Could be categorised in Category:Women in art

deleting derivative works

[edit]

I have requested that an Image you deleted be undeleted. In the future, it might be helpful if rather than unilaterally deleting items without notice you took the time to either initiate discussion to determine if the image in question is actually prohibited as you assume, or at least notify the original contributor. Also, items which do qualify for fair use and which are being used in wikipedia should probably be moved there rather than deleted outright so that they can continue to be used there. --Bachrach44 (talk) 18:07, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi D-Kuru

I need an explanation why User talk:ABF has deleted the image UPLA-logo?, Thanks, Efguerre (talk) 22:46, 28 November 2008

Logos are NOT allowed as long as they aren't ineligible for copyright. Yamaha logo.svg is ineligible for copyright, because it's not creative enough to be copyrighted. Your image is eligible for copyright and not a {{Coat of Arms}} and thereby not allowed on Commons. en:Image:Imagen-Upla.png is tagged with {{Non-free logo}} which is fair use which is not allowed on Commons.
--D-Kuru (talk) 11:59, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

This is the second montage I made for Islamabad. The first one got deleted for the same reason and now the second one will be deleted because one of the Wiki images is a copyright violation which amazingly escaped the eyes of all patrols until recently. I guess you better recruit more people who monitor newly uploaded images. Cheers. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 09:55, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

I know that en.wiki has a big lack of adins which patrol new images or have a intuition of which image could be a copyvio. Moreover there is no button for "tineye" (Tineye is google for images).
It's not as easy as you may think to recruit people who patrol new images. It's takes a lot of time to check the images and you need experience to see which image could be a copyviofile.
This image don't has to be deleted if you supersede the copyvioimage and update your image. The old version would be deleted. It's up to you what you want to do.
--D-Kuru (talk)
Well usually people in general don't know much about copyrights in images, its easier to patrol articles indeed. I have a question, I asked others as well, none answered. Can wallpapers be used on WikiCommons? Or they are copyrighted too. The same Centaurus image is present on many different sites, one of them is the official website of the corp. where it can be downloaded as a wallpaper. See here. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 12:49, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
P.S: I have uploaded a new version, again all images are from Wikiworld. Kindly check the sources and delete the old one. Thankyou. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 13:24, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Why on earth did you think this image came from indefence.is? The source is given on the very next line, where you could have verified the license (CC-BY-2.0) and saved everyone a lot of time. Physchim62 (talk) 13:47, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

My ***, you really do want to waste people's time, don't you! If you want to hunt out copyvios, try doing the harder stuff of checking the Commons' archives instead of harassing innocent Flickr uploaders when you have no reason to believe that the picture is not theirs. Physchim62 (talk) 02:38, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

I finally got a written permission via email from the author but I have hard time trying to email the OTRS system. I don't know how to figure out my email connection on the "outlook express", can you help me out please.Thanks!--Executioner (talk) 18:50, 1 December 2008 (UTC) Maybe I can send you the emailed permission and you then send it to OTRS, what you say?--Executioner (talk) 19:12, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

The best way is it if your friend send the email to OTRS. The best way is it to use the template on Commons:Email templates. This would be the following text for your image:

To permissions-commons@wikimedia.org

I hereby assert that I am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of WORK http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Pashtun_girl_of_Afghanistan.jpg.

I agree to publish that work under the free licenses cc-by-sa-3.0 and GFDL from http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Choosing_a_license#Common_free_licenses.

I acknowledge that I grant anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product, and to modify it according to their needs, as long as they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws.

I am aware that I always retain copyright of my work, and retain the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be attributed to me.

I am aware that the free license only concerns copyright, and I reserve the option to take action against anyone who uses this work in a libelous way, or in violation of personality rights, trademark restrictions, etc.

I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the work may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

DATE, NAME OF THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER

Just copy the text, fill in the date and the copyrightholder and send it to your friend that he can mail it to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org". That should be enough. Maybe he/you should add the story that it's a photo of a photo and that there is no other image of this photo in your friends camera, but that he has taken the image and agrees with the terms listed above.
--D-Kuru (talk) 19:43, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
I did all that but me and (especially Mr. Javed) both cannot send e-mails to OTRS because we never used the Microsoft Outlook Express before for sending and recieving emails. We can't figure-out the Outlook Express' on our PCs to send emails. Is there any other way to send an email to OTRS besides the Outlook Express?
How about if I go back to Mr. Javed and make him sign the above agreement on a piece of paper and I take photo of the agreement as evidence and upload it here to Commons? Will that work?--Executioner (talk) 20:52, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
If Outlook works depends on which email account you have. Just having outlook without any Email adress don't really help us. You can also create a free email account on yahoo or gmx or some other free mailing service. However, the sheet would be the easiest way to do it. If you creat such a sheet be sure to include the information that the sheet also must be usable under a free licence.
As you said you used Outlook. Seems to me that you don't have an email adress ("name@webside.domain" like "example@wikimedia.org") so the sheet would be the best and the savest thing to do it.
