Ask and ye shall receive

Fixed the '1945 problem' in rev 86805[1]. Will try to get it pushed out soon. Kaldari (talk) 01:16, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks.
Other problems that could be fixed are:
one, two and three digit years (dates on antiques), dates BC: : Error: Invalid time., : Error: Invalid time., : 2024
Support for two-digit year representation for 20/21st century years needs to be removed for this : 12.02.1989
has the ugly habit of assuming stuff. With it assumes that - as the day is unspecified - the current day of this month is meant: "01.08.2010". Which is horrendously stupid.
is also weird in that it accepts 2001-02-31 (and displays it as March 3) but refuses 2001-02-32.
And of course multi-language support would be necessary, if we want to replace ISOdate with .
Another useful feature would be if would be able to autodetect the necessary date format. should display "1945" and should display "January 1945". --Slomox (talk) 12:06, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
I tried to start parsing through ISOdate to figure out how changes to would affect it, but I just got a headache and gave up. Is there any possibility that you or someone else who is familiar with the template could add some HTML comments and whitespace into it to so that it is more readable? Kaldari (talk) 23:18, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
"Support for two-digit year representation for 20/21st century years needs to be removed for this 12.02.1989: 12.02.1989" Can you elaborate on this? What's wrong with that example? It looks correct as far as I can tell. Kaldari (talk) 23:20, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Added arbitrary (and user) language support in rev 86927. Most of the rest of these bugs are due to php's DateTime constructor.[2][3] Kaldari (talk) 00:40, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
Most of the rest of these bugs are due to php's DateTime constructor. They are, but they are still problems.
Can you elaborate on this? What's wrong with that example? It's not exactly wrong, but we need to be able to format dates in the 1st century AD too. Therefore should refer to a 1st century date and render as 12.02.89, not 12.02.1989. --Slomox (talk) 09:37, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
To most people (in the US at least) 89-02-12 means February 12, 1989. Similarly 11-11-11 means November 11, 2011. This is why PHP's DateTime constructor automatically adds 1900 or 2000 to the date. At best, those types of dates are ambiguous and should be discouraged if possible. Better to use the ISO valid form 0011-11-11. Kaldari (talk) 18:52, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
Please vote for the fixing the PHP bug here: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=54597 Kaldari (talk) 18:53, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
BTW, the 1945 fix is deployed to live Commons now. If you could add any inline documentation to ISOdate it would be greatly appreciated. Kaldari (talk) 18:55, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Translations

Hi Slomox, where could I write an info in order to initiate translation of the templates Before and Between? (I hope I have not created copies of already existing templates, I couldn't find anything of that function, although trivial and often needed.) Thanks, --Petrus Adamus (talk) 20:25, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Is there a difference to "<" and "between"? Probably they are the same, I guess.
As for your question: I do not know any good place to request translations for templates. --Slomox (talk) 21:03, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
Today I have found the template Other date, thus that my ones are copies, actually. I have embedded Other date in them, so they effectively just forward the parameters now and the translations is sorted out that way. --Petrus Adamus (talk) 21:12, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Barnstar

The Template Barnstar

You are hereby presented the technical barnstar for your nearly unparalled work in the creation of Template:ISOdate. If ever there was a template beast that no one thought tamable, it was this one; and yet you have accomplished it, to the great assistance of multilingualism and to the ease of editing. Magog the Ogre (talk) 06:46, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks ;-) I'm not proud of the ugly creature I created and I hope that I someday can release it from its suffering but until that day it does its job. --Slomox (talk) 20:58, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Slomox/Archiv!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

RTL

Hi, can you see this topic? Template talk:Description#RTL thank you :) −ebraminiotalk 13:21, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

thanks, working fine! but please watch it again, also please add this language Pnb on Dir.−ebraminiotalk 23:04, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
hi, can you delete that now? not used on template namespace. −ebraminiotalk 07:35, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
No reason to rush this. Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Description/dir is not yet empty. I guess it's just pages that have not yet been updated and they'll probably disappear soon. But I won't delete the template as long as that has not happened. --Slomox (talk) 19:43, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
wow! Still have some transclusion but I can not find where is it! All of linked pages needs a null edit I think, may a robot can do it.
Sorry, Can you delete CD with all of its subpages? it is created by myself, but now all of its usage moved to Formatnum. (with your helps on Template talk:Formatnum) −ebraminiotalk 00:08, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
My bot is doing null edits and seems working well. Number of transclusions are decreasing. −ebraminiotalk 00:44, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Template:Description/dir now can deleted i think. −ebraminiotalk 08:57, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
I deleted it. --Slomox (talk) 09:23, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

"talk" localisation

I've noticed (from some fiddling around with my account language preferences) that the "talk" description in signatures isn't generally localised (see eg Commons:Café - it's all "talk" in the midst of Spanish discussion). From MediaWiki:Common.js I deduce it's the lack of localisation there (it does work for some languages) - but for instance for French I don't get a "d", I get nothing, which is a bit odd. Anyway, can we try and get a lot more localisation done? All it would take is going through the different languages to use the translation from the relevant Wikipedia, eg es:MediaWiki:Signature. Rd232 (talk) 16:56, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

It does work for me when I use "?uselang=fr". I do see the "d". If you create a list with the translations, I can update MediaWiki:Common.js. No problem. --Slomox (talk) 10:18, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Maybe it was a caching issue, it's fine now. I'm collecting translations at User:Rd232/talktable. Rd232 (talk) 13:24, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Fotd

Hi, the uncategorised templates Fotd, Template:Fotd/Day, FotdAllLanguages catch my eye - what are these for? Can they be deleted? It seems like an idea that didn't go anywhere. Rd232 (talk) 01:38, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Also GetFotdLang. Rd232 (talk) 15:39, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
They can be deleted. --Slomox (talk) 13:28, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi I noticed that you used a parameter "l" rather than "1" in some Coa-desc. Was there any reason for that or can I replace them ? As you noticed, "in a perfect solution no aliases should exist at all". Beside shouldn't the template use City rather than language specific parameters, at least for languages where city names have no declensions ?--Zolo (talk) 02:10, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

It's documented in the documentation ;-) 1 is the name in the default language and l is the name of the page the link should point to (if different from 1). Looking at their monospace font representations it wasn't the wisest decision to choose l out of all possible parameter names... But in most cases people hopefully use instead of anyway, I guess. --Slomox (talk) 14:34, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
Oops sorry yes I should have started with the documentation page... So I suppose that there is no other solution (unless once again we get some more flexible databasish system)--Zolo (talk) 08:26, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Bild mit falscher Benennung

Hallo Slomox.

language names in low German

Slomox, as mentionned on template talk:Language, MediaWiki now supports a language parser that takes a language parameter so that gives . It would make sense to use it in place of our own Language. However I want to make sure we wont lose anything. It seems that the parser does not support nds yet, so we should export what we have in the template. Could you check that the following are correct (and add some if you wish) ?--Zolo (talk) 18:08, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

I changed vrm and zea in your list, the rest is okay. But I thought there will be CLDR support in the parser function? The Low Saxon names exist in CLDR (at least in the repository, I'm not sure about the published version). --Slomox (talk) 18:27, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
Oh sorry I had not noticed that it was in the original CLDR (it is not in the mediawiki version). The CLDR list is much more comprehensive but data are marked "draft=unconfirmed". Not sure of what it implies. --Zolo (talk) 22:02, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
