Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:50, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Reminder: User Group Meeting this Saturday

Dear Commons Photographers User Group member,

This is a quick reminder that our second virtual meeting will take place this Saturday, September 26. The agenda entails presentations about drone photography, about the story behind a featured picture, and about the future of LRMediaWiki. We'll also discuss photographers’ contacts with the Wikimedia Foundation and the election of representatives for our user group. You'll find information about all of this on the event page:

I'm also inviting you to share some information about yourself and your photography work with other members of the user group on our new membership list:

I hope you're well during these difficult times. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 15:55, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

File:November 5th.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Gunther Burstyn.

This is a photograph of Gunther Burstyn: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunther_Burstyn#/media/File:Gunther_Burstyn.jpg

This is his younger brother, Werner: https://www.bildarchivaustria.at/Pages/ImageDetail.aspx?p_iBildID=15513197 The Austrian Archive captioned it wrongly. I have spoken to them, and they have now corrected. (There was also a third brother, Walther.)

There are two film documentaries about tanks in the First War that show the wrong Burstyn brother. I think Wikipedia can take at least some of the credit for that. The least we can do is try to prevent it from happening again. Hengistmate (talk) 12:54, 22 November 2020 (UTC) Hengistmate (talk) 13:10, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Commons Photographers User Group meeting on Saturday

Dear Commons Photographers User Group member,

I'd like to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, December 12. We'll have two presentations: Habib Mhenni aka Dyolf77 will answer the question Do "we" need DSLRs anymore? and Martin Falbisoner will walk us through the making of his featured picture File:Caribbean_Sea_-_Long_Exposure.jpg.

If you can make it, please add your name to the list of attendees to this page:

I hope to see you in three days. Also, I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best for 2021. Your contributions to Commons make a big difference.

Warmly, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 14:12, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Photographs by Ed Gold

You added the {{NoUploads}} template to the Commons Category:Photographs by Ed Gold. I presume you did this in good faith, thinking that I had uploaded these images without permission. This is not so: all have gone through the OTRS process and are individually tagged with ticket #2020071110005674 confirming that the photographer, Ed Gold has licensed them as CC BY-SA 4.0. Please remove the tag. Michael D. Turnbull (talk) 17:04, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

Apologies, maybe I misunderstood the purpose of your tagging the category. Was it just to discourage others from uploading more photos by Ed Gold that were not correctly licensed? If so that's fine, of course, unless it puts people off using the ones we now have that I uploaded. I'm not sure whether that could be made clearer in the tagging. Michael D. Turnbull (talk) 18:15, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

Your most memorable shot 2020

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

Over the course of the past two years, we've been sharing pictures that have a special meaning with each other at the start of the new year. Today, I'm inviting you add your most memorable shot of 2020 to this page:

I hope you, your familiy, and your friends are well during these difficult times. I wish you all the best for 2021 and I can't wait to see what your most memorable shot of 2020 looks like.

Abergagged

Hello! Do you think I should contact the artist [1] and ask if they would relinquish any copyright on the Captain Tom mural? Would this have any bearing on the copyright status of the file? Local artworks like this are deisgned to be shared, of course. Thanks for all your wonderful photographs over the years. No Swan So Fine (talk) 18:37, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

By all means try contacting them; there are some template email they can use, at Commons:Email templates. Thank you for your kind words. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:00, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

Massrename

Hi Andy, in the hope that you can help me I ask you because I had seen that you are using Perhelions script for massrename. In spite for all my searches I cannot find any hint how to use the script, i.e. to initiate such a rename. I would rather like to have series of filemoves done by a bot - but bot desriptions are also very poor; may be that you know about a bot able to rename (that's my second question)? Almost desperated, -- sarang사랑 07:28, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

@Sarang: Sorry, I have only just seen this. When viewing a category page, I get a "Mass rename" option, under a "More" tab - do you see that? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:25, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi Andy. I always have difficulty in editing Wikidata when it contains errors. Any chance you could please kindly help me? The above soldier Alfred Tippinge always used that spelling of his name (with an "e") although his parents and son did not. I have attempted to correct the Wikidata on that score but I don't have the skills. I have corrected everything else as far as I know how to. Thanks. Storye book (talk) 17:52, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Deletion tags

I've once again removed the deletion tags from Portsmouth montage and Piccadilly. The Portsmouth montage consists of all free images found on Commons, and the photo of Piccadilly Circus does not differ from this, this, this, or this, which feature on the Wikipedia page. I am keen to hear your reasoning for tagging these two images. If you feel the one of Piccadilly infringes copyright then I hope you'll extend the same courtesy to the rest of the images which feature not only on the Wikipedia page but on Commons too. Jaguar (talk) 17:00, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

@Jaguar: It is important that the images that were used in your excellent Portsmouth_montage.png are identified so the appropriate attributions may be given to the creators of the original images (and to cross check there is no license issues with them). Can you please identify the constituent image sources of your collage, ideally at the deletion discussion. Thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 11:41, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello Pigsonthewing, is this "the" John Mallard? Thanks. Lotje (talk) 08:54, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

John Murray Ince has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Commons, Talibs and some meta thoughts

Hello Andy,

First I thought of replying in Commons:Village pump#"Lock your accounts, redact your Afghanistan pictures", but then decided to "Talk to Andy" first.

It is ironic, as in 2020 the same author had been advising, at the same forum: "you can [still] find out who they are", "a lot of jerks ... are simply stupid", "Archive everything. This is really important. ... Go ahead and use archive.is to MAKE SURE HE CAN’T GET AWAY WITH IT AFTER HE DELETES" [formatting in original], "it’s information you can glean from trying to log into their ... account from incognito mode", with even more specific doxxing instructions and actions at the same URL - I do not provide these it on purpose.

She even intimated violence: "kick his ass, Sea Bass" [with even more expressive formatting and meme, you can check the source] and more.

Let me come up with the right idiom: what is good for goose is good for the gander? (Nomen omen, as per the source, as gender is much involved). Live by the sword, die by the sword, i.e. ξιφοδηλήτῳ, θανάτῳ τίσας ᾇπερ ἦρχεν (c)Aeschylus?

More to the point: IMHO it is a topic for Meta and maybe for Trust and Safety, and not Commons as such. Do reply here or ping me there, if you decide to move the forum.

Yann (talk) 14:06, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

@Yann: A particularly silly thing to do, given that in the very act of uploading it I tagged it with {{speedydelete|1=Undelete in 2025}} and then immediately added it to the relevant category. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:16, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
Hi, To do things properly, either create a DR or add manually the file in the page Category:Undelete in 2025. Otherwise, nobody will know that it has to be undeleted in 2025. Sorry, I didn't see that you did the later. Regards, Yann (talk) 14:24, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

William Pearn image

Andy, What do you mean File:William Pearn - Telephone.jpg's replacement is a reworking. What does reworking mean. Size of file matters little here, I uploaded a far superior version that's clearer and brighter. It has been clearly taken directly from the original picture, the detail proves that; it is certainly not your image manipulated to look brighter or whatever. The new one is more detailed. Broichmore (talk) 11:01, 25 September 2021 (UTC)

Your edit summary ("Improved definition") and lack of change to the stated source suggest that you've applied your personal interpretation of what the image should look like. Nothing wrong with that, but it should be done as as a separate file, not overwriting the original. If it is from a different source, it should still be uploaded separately, and the source stated. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:08, 25 September 2021 (UTC)
Its a moot point, mine came from tumblr, but as you know this painting is privately owned and all the photos obviously come from the same source. What's important is the accuracy of the photo to the object. The best quality pictures here come from the NMM and my picture is their equal. The auction house Eldred's in this case are generally poor in quality. This is not a Turner, Andy. Broichmore (talk) 12:59, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
That edit was just an error on my part. Why all the hubris and no reply to this. Broichmore (talk) 17:52, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

Sparrowhedgerow 2

Hello Andy, @Sparrowhedgerow here again. I want to put the following pictures into Mary's book with the following references attached. Sorry to trouble you again but would you check please that I have the right idea. I have used CC - by - SA - 3.0 and them the name. But for printing in Mary's book should I use GNU license. However, some of those below don't have a GNU license so would that mean I can't use the image.. thanks very much again.

-- Sparrowhedgerow 28 Oct 2021 Sparrowhedgerow (talk) 22:50, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

@Sparrowhedgerow: Some minor modifications:

Note that the licences are "BY-SA" not just "SA", and are prefixed "CC", all written as I have shown. As the URLs are all the same you could just give one instance. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:59, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

Andy - that is extremely helpful thanks you. Should I put a url to the image too e.g. for the pictish stone distribution https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pictish_Stone_distribution.jpg; https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en - CC BY-SA 3.0, David Lloyd

I tried to 'talk' to David Lloyd but I can't find him under User talk:david lloyd. How do I communicate with the creators of the images? Is it courtesy to get in touch and thanks them for the use of their work? I am almost finished asking questions - I hope - and I'm sure you hope too. But thanks again for keeping me on the straight and narrow. @Sparrowhedgerow 29/10/21 Sparrowhedgerow (talk) 10:11, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

@Sparrowhedgerow: URLs for the images, in print (as opposed to links from web pages) are nice but not required. There is also no requirement to contact individual photographers, but you might indeed want to let them know, when the work is published, as a courtesy. I've no idea whether David Lloyd has an account here, or how to contact them - you might want to ask User:Catfish Jim and the soapdish, who uploaded that file. It's been my pleasure, Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:46, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

@Sparrowhedgerow again. I notice some of the images have a GNU license - if an image doesn't have a GNU license then can I still use it in Mary's printed book? While I am here again - do you mind if I ask this question? It is about File:Monymusk ReliquaryDSCF6380.jpg - this work is by Johnbod. However a lot of the images of the Monymusk Reliquary have the following notice - "This file was uploaded as part of a partnership between Wikimedia UK and the National Museum of Scotland. This tag does not indicate the copyright status of the attached work. A normal copyright tag is still required. See Commons:Licensing. This work is free and may be used by anyone for any purpose. If you wish to use this content, you do not need to request permission as long as you follow any licensing requirements mentioned on this page. The Wikimedia Foundation has received an e-mail confirming that the copyright holder has approved publication under the terms mentioned on this page. This correspondence has been reviewed by a Volunteer Response Team (VRT) member and stored in our permission archive. The correspondence is available to trusted volunteers as ticket #2019101510006699. If you have questions about the archived correspondence, please use the VRT noticeboard. Ticket link: https://ticket.wikimedia.org/otrs/index.pl?Action=AgentTicketZoom&TicketNumber=2019101510006699" Basically - I am wondering if Johnbod's image is ok if a lot of the other ones are under a partnership between Wikimedia UK and National Museum of Scotland. I'm assuming I can use them too as they say they are free but I'm not sure. NMS charge a lot for copies of images and so I'm wondering why these are free here. They may be less quality but this is good enough for our purposes. Sorry written in a bit of a hurry. Thanks again. @Sparrowhedgerow 29/10/21 Sparrowhedgerow (talk) 15:21, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

@Sparrowhedgerow: Where an image has two (or more) licences, you may choose which to use. the CC image is fine for your purposes. You can use Johnbod's image, regardless of what other images say; and you can use any of the other images, too. NMS have worked with WMUK specifically to make them available to everyone. @Sparrowhedgerow Hopefully the permissions on that file are okay now. If you're going to use it I would prefer that it was used with attribution to David Lloyd... been a while since I was conversant with CC stuff. Catfish Jim and the soapdish (talk) 12:54, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

Commons Photographers User Group: first board election

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

In preparation of the first board election of our group, I invite you to take a look at the following page:

and provide feedback. I've listed a number of positions for our first board and I've also outlined a possible timeline for the elections. The current plan is to open the self-nomination process up on November 15 and then have the election start on December 1.

I'm super excited to get this going and I'm very much looking forward to hearing from you. Please use this talk page for your thoughts.

I hope you're safe and well, and I wish you all the best! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 23:56, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello again Sparrowhedgerow here. I wondered if you would help me with another query - we want to use an image of the Deskford Carnyx. There is a very nice one at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Replica_of_the_Deskford_Carnyx_(9487528587).jpg Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic license. Can we use a 2.0 license image? and do we reference it as I have? There is another image with a 3.0 license - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leichestown_Deskford_carnyx_reconstruction._Museum_of_ScotlandDSCF6323.jpg which I have referenced as - https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en - CC BY-SA 3.0 Johnbod Am I better to use a 3.0 license image. Another query - there was an image with a 4.0 license - can we use them? and again how do we reference it? Thank you as always for your help @Sparrowhedgerow 16/11/21 Sparrowhedgerow (talk) 22:16, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

Medea-chart database on old nautical charts

Hi, I’m sending this message to all participants of Commons Wikimaps listed here, so that I can be pretty sure it will get to some of you. I am the Principal Investigator of the ERC funded project Medea-Chart ([4]), hosted by the University of Lisbon, whose scientific objective is the study of the genesis, evolution and use of nautical charts from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. One of the visible outcomes of our project is the Medea-Chart database, aimed at storing and making available information and images of all extant manuscript nautical charts: [5]. Since the images of old maps and charts are now in the public domain and our database is open to all, I’m sure your project could benefit from it. The most obvious way would be to download from there all the images you are interested in, but I imagine you could use the tool for more sophisticated purposes. For now, I invite all of you to go there, browse the database, do geographical searches, read our “Chart of the Week” mini-articles, etc. You don’t even need to register for that. Registration is only required for those interested in downloading high resolution images or producing reports. Best wishes and have fun, Alvesgaspar (talk) 21:20, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

@Alvesgaspar: Thank you for reaching out to our community in this way.
"download from there all the images you are interested in" It would probably be better, if you are able, for you to upload all of the PD images, with whatever metadata you are able to share under PD or open licence. We have tools that allow bulk uploads in such cases.
It would also be possible to create a Wikidata entry for each chart.
I've worked as a Wikimedian in Residence with other institutions on similar projects, should you require assistance. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:43, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Board election: voting is open!

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

The voting phase for our group's board election starts today. Please consider casting your vote. Voting ends on December 17.

I wish you all the best for the rest of the year 2021. Stay safe and healthy! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 17:03, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

This isn't US Gov work, as could have been determined by looking at the actual scanned document in the PDF file.

The previous DR may have been closed but clearly had a comment indicating some of the issues in the scans had copyright notices.

As I said in the most recent DR Commons:Deletion requests/File:Cranberries; - the national cranberry magazine (IA cranberriesnatio6668port).pdf, It would be appreciated that if items get renominated, some effort is made, including the possibility that there may be an incorrect license involved.

It perhaps wasn't clear enough that the original PD-US-Gov license was incorrect in the original DR. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:00, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

Clean crop

Nice job on File:The New Yorker 0020, 1925-07-04 - page 4 - header.jpg. I also made File:The New Yorker 0001 1925-02-21 (page 3 crop) (cropped).jpg, which is the same header from a different issue. As you can see from Category:The New Yorker, Volume 001, Issue 01, I made a lot of crops as JPGs and then converted them into PNGs to remove that discolored background and turned it into a transparency or made some shaky lines into straight ones (File:The New Yorker 0001 1925-02-21 (page 28 crop) (cropped) 6.png). Are you much an image-editing whiz? I'm pretty bad at it and I think that there must be a more efficient way to work. If you're not or otherwise not motivated to work on these, NBD. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:46, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

@Koavf: I'm not much of an image whiz, and I only made the header crop because I was working on the page to extract the cartoon, which is what I was really interested in. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:31, 29 December 2021 (UTC)

Fae uploads...

Hi.

Any chance you could also try and find more author detail for other uploaded books in the same category? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:28, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

@ShakespeareFan00: I shall do so as and when I come across them, but I am unlikely to have time to do so in bulk. Best thing, if you know of any and don't have time to find them yourself, is to add them to a tracking category. Nominating them for deletion, speedy or otherwise, is not helpful. First I added right cat: Saint Peter's Basilica in art (exterior), then I used a sortkey to place it at the beginning of Saint Peter's Basilica in views of Rome. This is not so difficult to see. Without sortkey files are sorted by their name, which are not created with view to later sorting. I sorted the whole cat grouping views and sorting in general from remote to close.--Oursana (talk) 08:48, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

@Oursana: I know what a sort key is, and how they work. What was "difficult to see" was what I asked: What does "006" signify, when used as a sot key on this image? The answer appears to be "nothing". I do not accept that sort keys are intended to be used in the manner you describe, when your intent is opaque to other users. Please desist from doing so, at least until you have established community consensus for such practice. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:13, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
006 is a very clear sortkey meaning Position 006 from remote to close, numeric, I did improve the gallery, at least not disturb because there is no other sorting and my sorting is better than sorting by files name. And you used the wrong cat anyway and in general, let's say more than 99% other users do not complain, even thank. I am active in Wikipedia:Kontor Hamburg and my sorting of Hamburg photographs is appreciated. Sometimes with paintings I mention the sortkey on the Category page. Only by sorting I found some precious fotos which I put on St Peter's Gallery. --Oursana (talk) 13:24, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Yes I saw it, it is not the first time, it is difficult to find the older discussions which ended difus; by the way I attended one course of yours in Esino Lario. If I do not sort your file what are you bothering. If you see the cat now, it is improved same motivs are all grouped together, I really miss the understanding to protect a category sorted eventually by the more opaque and eventual sortkey of the file names, that bothers me--Oursana (talk) 13:57, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello, I converted your speedy deletion request to a regular request because, while it's clear the file is not own work of the uploader (as you rightly cited), the actual source is less definitive because the tweet you mentioned was cropped from an original. I thought I'd let you know because I transferred your reason (attached with speedy delete view) to the deletion request, and in case you wanted to review it further to identify the true source/license. — Bacon Noodles (talkcontribsuploads) 14:30, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Negative stereotypes of Black people in art has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed.

Thank you!

You're invited to provide input…

Dear fellow member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

At our last meeting end of August, we talked about getting in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation and offering our help for improving Wikimedia Commons. Today, I invite you to provide your input on a draft open letter to the Foundation. Over the course of the next ten days, we'll further improve the text together, before inviting people to sign it. If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.

In the meanwhile, I hope you're well and have a great time taking photos! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 08:42, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi, Pigsonthewing. On the Category:Vintage guitars, our main concern is the production years of each guitars/bass guitars, so I've set the sort key in chronological order. Most of the files under that category have been already set the sort key. What's wrong? --Clusternote (talk) 22:35, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
P.S. for 11 years ago, I uploaded and created Category:Pink Floyd Interstellar Exhibition Paris although these were low resolution photographs. Then, you provided high-quality Category:Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains, and I'm thanks for your contributions. --Clusternote (talk) 22:57, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

It's my understanding that such category keys are not to be used. Where was this decision made, and where is it documented? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:15, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
Wikimedia sites seems not the purely rule-driven community but the place where users can propose the ideas each other and find the better ways through trial and error. If you have better proposal, we are welcome. --Clusternote (talk) 22:00, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
So no agreement to use such a scheme, then? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:14, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
I was asked to explain in the comment field of that file, so I explained. Then, you asked if it was ruled out, so I explained that it was a trial-and-error based effort, and optionally I asked what your suggestions were. If you haven't any suggestions, we're done. --Clusternote (talk) 23:56, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Online workshop this weekend

Dear Commons Photographers User Group member,

This coming Saturday, October 8, we'll host an online post processing workshop. On behalf of our events coordinator Shreya I invite you to sign up for the event using this Google form.

I hope you're well. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:50, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Illustrations are illustrations

Hi Andy - why do you keep removing illustrations from the (illustrations) subcategory where they clearly belong? An illustration is anything that has been used to illustrate a book, journal, magazine, or other printed material; that includes reproduced photographs, as well as paintings or line drawings. If you see e.g. this similar file, it is clearly indicated by its supplier Biodiversity Heritage Library that it is an illustration; see line 12 "Click here to view book online to see this illustration in context in a browseable online version of this book" (my emphasis). There are probably tens of thousands of other similar files categorised as illustrations. To say that they are not as you appear to be doing by your actions, is completely contrary to normal usage of the term. Please stop taking them out of the correct categories! - MPF (talk) 23:06, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

For the same reason I have explained to you elsewhere - they are not "illustrations" in the sense used on Commons. Note that Category:Illustrations is itself categorised in Category:Graphic design. I have a series of books which includes a photograph of every known paintings by van Gough. Shall we move all images of his works to "Category:Illustrations by van Gogh"? Furthermore, you are miscategorising PDFs and images of text articles, and even - most ridiculously - audio files, as illustrations. By all means point to consensus to include photographs scanned from books only in Illustration sub categories. Until you can do so, your removal of such files to this inappropriate categories, apparently because you want to keep parent categories for images in "demand among using wikipedias", is not "correct", it is disruptive. (I note that the Ichthyaetus melanocephalus photograph was only in an illustration subcategory because you wrongly put it there.) Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:44, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
Category:Illustrations is also categorised in Category:Depictions. en:Illustration says "An illustration is a decoration, interpretation or visual explanation of a text, concept or process, designed for integration in print and digital published media, such as posters, flyers, magazines, books, teaching materials, animations, video games and films .... Contemporary illustration uses a wide range of styles and techniques, including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, montage, digital design, multimedia ('text, audio, images, animations, or video'!), 3D modelling". That is a pretty wide range of availability; I've italicised a few that contradict your narrow interpretation. "By all means point to consensus to include photographs scanned from books only in Illustration sub categories" - how about you point to any consensus that specifically exclude photographs scanned from books, particularly when major providers like BHL explicitly state them to be illustrations. File:The birds of Yorkshire - being a historical account of the avi-fauna of the County (1907) (14568958607).jpg carries the clear statement that it is an illustration; while it may now be a museum specimen, there is no explicit evidence to state that it is. It was "obtained", but there is no statement of accession to any museum - at publication, it was privately held, as shown by "I ... have failed to obtain permission from the owner of the specimen to make it public", so your categorisation is unproven and dubious.
As for your book of van Gough art; yes, scans from that, as opposed to direct photos of the art works, could very reasonably be subcategorised separately. They will be easily distinguished by the printed dot pattern (cf. e.g. File:Druckraster.jpg, File:TrameQuadri.png), which means they differ markedly from direct photos, being much lower quality and not matching the originals in detail. That is why that Mediterranean Gull file is correctly classified by BHL as an illustration.
You accuse me of disruptive editing. I suggest then that you block my wiki account, and set a bot to revert every edit I have ever made. I certainly don't feel much like continuing to edit here if my edits are ruled disruptive and are just going to get reverted. Your behaviour towards me is strongly putting me off wishing to continue here. - MPF (talk) 23:07, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

"By all means point to consensus to include photographs scanned from books only in Illustration sub categories."

Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:15, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
I very much doubt there is any consensus either way, either to include them, or to exclude them. Has it ever even been discussed? - MPF (talk) 16:54, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
