Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Wenn das Material hier nützlich ist, gebe ich es sehr gern für Wikipedia/Wikimedia her. Schwierigkeiten bereitet zum Teil die Bestimmung, da ich selbst nicht so der Insektenspezialist bin. Noch ein Video

Ich habe versucht ein Video für als "Medium des Tages" für den 16. September einzubauen. Leider ist mir das nicht recht geglückt, konnte leider auch nirgendwo eine Doku finden wie das geht. Viele Grüße --HelgeRieder (talk) 20:20, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Relativ einfach: öffne die Commons-Hauptseite, klicke auf den Link (direkt über dem Bild zum aktuellen "Medium des Tages"), wähle den gewünschten (leeren) Tag (eventuell zuvor oben noch den gewünschten Monat wählen), klicke dann dort auf "Wähle eine neue Multimedia-Datei", den Link am einfachsten in einem neuen Tab öffnen. Trage auf der sich dann öffnenden Seite nur den gewünschten Dateinamen (so wie er auf der Fileseite des Videos unter dem Vorschaubild steht, also gegebenenfalls mit Unterstrichen) ein und speichere ab. Wechsle auf die vorherige Seite zurück, nach einer Aktualisierung sollte dort dann das Vorschaubild am gewünschten Termin erscheinen. Rechts daneben gibt es die Links in verschiedenen Sprachen, wo du die gewünschte Bildunterschrift eintragen kannst. Sollte das Verlinken auf eine nationale Wikipedia per Button nicht funktionieren (wie bei mir), schau dir in einem älteren Datei (mit Link) die Schreibweise an, die ist leicht zu verstehen. Im Übrigen fände ich es gut, wenn da mal noch ein paar Leute mehr mitmachen würden... Gruß, --Pristurus (talk) 21:03, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Vielen Dank ich habs kapiert - mir war nicht klar, dass ich da die Beschreibung nochmals per Hand eingeben muss - aber jetzt hats geklappt. Samson-Videos hab ich noch viele weitere auf WP hochgeladen - siehe die deutschsprachige (und französischsprachige) Seite "Samsonfigur". Hi Pristurus, danke für die netten Worte. Das eine Video hab ich vom 15. auf den 21. verschoben, weil so die Soundfile, die denselben Tag auf enwiki auf der Hauptseite steht auch hier auf der Seite stehen kann (und die Soundfile von netter Qualität ist) - hab das für eine gute Synergie gehalten. lg Hekerui (talk) 09:19, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Ich hab File:Free-Tal-Mallohi-Protest-SyrianEmbassy-Cairo.ogv entfernt, da ist kein Beweis auf der Quellenwebseite, dass das Video unter einer freien Lizenz erhältlich ist. Die Uploads des Nutzers suggerieren vielmehr, dass er einfach Kram hochlädt aus politischer Motivation ungeachtet Urheberrecht. Hekerui (talk) 12:11, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Das wäre kein Problem, wenn ich die Originaldatei hier lokal auf dem PC vorliegen hätte. Bisher gab es aber für mich noch nicht die Notwendigkeit, das zu versuchen, da ich eigentlich lieber Videos selbst erstelle als fremde Filme zu bearbeiten. Hier fand ich das Motiv aber ganz interessant, technisch dagegen das Video zu verwackelt, daher der Beruhigungsversuch (auf Basis der Commonsversion). Wenn dir ein Weg bekannt ist, den Download von Flickr zu bewerkstelligen, lass hören; ansonsten werde ich morgen mal danach suchen, bin jetzt einfach zu müde dazu. Video-Hilfe

Hi Pristurus, kannst du mir damit helfen ein Video zu verbessern? Ich hatte im Oktober 2009 File:Ravi Shankar - Madhuvanti - Shiraz Arts Festival.ogg erstellt indem ich mit Hilfe von irgendeinem Programm das als Quelle genannt YouTube Video mit der besten erhältlichen Qualität als mp4 heruntergeladen hab und dann auf das relativ kleine ogg Format konvertiert hab. Damals hatte ich noch einen Computer von 2003, deshalb hab ich nur das kleine Format konvertiert bekommen, und damals konnte man noch das Video von YouTube extrahieren. Heute geht das nicht mehr. Kannst du mir da helfen ein hochqualitativeres Video von der YouTube-Quelle zu erstellen? Bei File:Ram Narayan at the Shiraz Arts Festival.ogg hatte ich das alte mp4-Video von YouTube noch gespeichert gehabt und konnte deshalb ein viel besseres Ogg-Video erstellen. Ich hatte die mp4 von File:Ram Narayan at the Shiraz Arts Festival.ogg mit Super von erightsoft.com in ogg umgewandelt, aber da gab es zwangsläufig einen Qualitätsverlust denn man musste ein bestimmtes kleineres Format wählen (und die Abmessungen mussten ganze Vielfache einer bestimmten Zahl sein sonst ging es gar nicht). Na ja, Qualitätsverlust hat man bei einen Neuencodierung zwangsläufig immer und theora ist auch nicht gerade der effizienteste Codec. Wenn du die mp4 und die ogg-Datei nebeneinander abspielst, wird das auch durchaus sichtbar werden. Die Umwandlung mache ich hier immer per ffmpeg2theora/Komandozeile, wobei ffmpeg2theora jeweils in einer neueren Version (http://firefogg.org/nightly/) zum Einsatz kommt. Hört sich komplizierter an, als es dann in der Praxis ist: einen separaten Ordner anlegen, dort ffmpeg2theora platzieren. Per Texteditor (z.B. Wordpad) eine Textdatei erstellen mit nur einer Zeile Inhalt: C:\ffmpeg2theora\ffmpeg2theora.exe %1 --aspect 4:3 --index-interval 1000 --keyint 250 --videobitrate 1000 --two-pass --soft-target --speedlevel 0 --audiobitrate 64 (Pfad zum Programm muss natürlich entsprechend geändert werden),diese Datei dann (Namen beliebig) mit der Endung .bat abspeichern. Nun kann man die mp4 einfach auf die Batchdatei ziehen und die Umwandlung beginnt, die fertige Datei wird dann im Verzeichnis der Ausgangs-mp4 erstellt. Ist das Ergebnis zu schlecht bzw. liegt die Ausgangsdatei in großen Abmessungen (HD) vor, wird die Bitrate per Editor z.B. auf 1500 erhöht. Das wäre, grob erklärt, meine Umwandlungsmethode. Wenn du das ausprobieren möchtest und es dabei Probleme geben sollte, kannst du natürlich gern nachfagen. Gruß, --Pristurus (talk) 08:46, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

I don't feel this would make a very good media of the day choice in it's current form. In particular the transcode is poor quality since I did it as a quick and dirty transcode in order to make it avaible quickly. Someone prepared to do a few minutes work with ffmpeg could get significantly better results.Geni (talk) 18:18, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Well, the source mp4-file (http://blip.tv/file/get/Aljazeeraasset-Video1212.mp4) has a bit rate of 1000 Kbps and a maximum bit rate of 1400 Kbps only and transcoded files will never have a (objective) better quality than source files, sorry. Trying to transcode in best quality (--videoquality 10) results in an increasing of file size and bit rate without a significant increasing of quality. Hallo Saibo, normalerweise verzichte ich gerne auf Texteinblendungen jedweder Art; hier geht es jedoch darum, eine Entwicklung zu dokumentieren und daher erachte ich in diesem speziellen Fall eine zusätzliche Information zur Zeitachse für notwendig; ein einfaches Weglassen wäre für mich so, als wenn man eine mathematische Kurve ohne das zugehörige Koordinatensystem präsentieren würde. Zugegebenermaßen stört eine Einblendung aber immer auch das Bildgefüge. Mein Vorschlag daher: ich kodiere das Video (in den nächsten Tagen) ohne Datum noch einmal neu und füge die entsprechenden Angaben als separate Untertiteldatei bei, deren Wiedergabe dann ja bei Bedarf vom Betrachter abgeschaltet werden kann. How can I change the thumbtime of a "Media of the Day" video?

For some reason the thumbtime change is only reflected on the MOTD file description page Template:Motd/2011-07-08 (en). Not on Commons:Media_of_the_day (or Template:Motd/2011-07). I did notice this several times. Probably due to caching. But it will work when the 2011-07-08 has arrived on the main page.

Those two sections could be helpful to you: User_talk:Queeg#motd_thumbtime and User_talk:Queeg#Motd.2F2011-06-10_thumbtime. Especially the template User:Saibo/thumbtimefinder I made to make finding thumbs of videos easier. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:25, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

If I make a template that will put your videos into the categories that your videos tend to go into the most often, would you use it for future uploads and not become hostile if I put it on the multitude of videos that are already here?

It (they) would be something like this:

and would always put them into Category:Videos of 2011 (or whatever year); Category:Videos from Germany (if you film from a different political location, the categories would have to be added manually; Category:Videos created by User:Pristurus and then the taxonomy-related categories and video categories.

I manually put those categories onto some of the files File:Anoplotrupes stercorosus.ogv is an example (and a funny video -- at least after watching several similar videos).

No, the subst needs to be added by the user who uses the template. Like in the example I made in my last comment. By the way - shouldn't such user templates be in the user's namespace? You created them in the template namespace. See Category:Templates for specific users ("These should all be contained in the user namespace. See COM:USER#Templates for more information."). Hallo Pristurus! Ich habe eben einige deiner Umbenennungsanträge ausgeführt. Da ich dich sehr oft bei WP:RBIO/B sehe, vermute ich mal, dass Du auch sehr oft Dateien zum Umbenennen hast. Hast Du vielleicht Lust, das Filemove-Recht hier zu beantragen? two things

1. Category:Videos of ethology <-- I had never heard of this "ology" until yesterday. I think it covers most of your more interesting videos.
2. File:Antlion.ogv and File:Inseto_sujo.ogg belong together except for this one problem. The video (2m 3s) ends prematurely for the audio (3m 14s) -- or I would have already put them together. There is another problem also -- the file should not be here and I will request it be deleted soon. It is a classic tragedy, actually -- the perfect MOTD Romeo and Juliet, an ill-fated yet perfect marriage of video and audio from conflicting licenses. A funny tale when briefly described here, but so so boring when told in real time. That tragedy is not my favorite of the authors writing but kind of funny for this situation of bugs in sand and rockabilly....

Unable to sleep, I am assuming it is due to having more of these pairings on my mind and because in real life, when I caught someone breaking a law, had I decreed and delivered the punishment, I would have been in the wrong -- I would have become the criminal. Black and white is a difficult thing when it comes to crime -- anyways, upload has completed; too bad because I was going to rant about US Government and their needing to take more loans to pay their debts which seems related....

File:Phyllobius pyri (Wollenberg).ogv should have File:Pretty Little Thing.ogg. This file is right on the edge of being acceptable -- it might be, actually.

Not that it should concern you whatsoever, but perhaps those who in judgement are reading this, Category:Public domain has a bunch of images in it -- license enforcers should be cleaning/reviewing their domains and systems, in my opinion. -- Queeg (talk) 16:12, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

I have never noticed this category. As a zoologist I know this "ology" and I also remember to the early 70th when Konrad Lorenz, Karl von Frisch and Nikolaas Tinbergen got the Nobel price and also the later on "no coment to my life between 1933 and 1945" (Konrad Lorenz)... However there exist nice films of him swimming with greylag geese showing the phenomen of filial imprinting (may be we can get the films in a few years). OK, in future I will use this category.

My videos are in the first place made for use in wikipedia. And I do not believe that there is an additional information for the wikipedia user in an additional audio part with music. However I know in commons things are different. So if you like it feel free to combine whatever you want (within the law) and create new files by this way.

Tip: If you like to multiplex vorbis and theora please do not a re-encoding of audio and/or video parts (whenever possible). In this case the quality of the resulting new file will inevitably decrease. Have a look to here. OogJoin should be your friend (command: oggJoin outputfile.ogv inputVideo.ogv inputAudio.ogg). I have wondered the reason that flac is not one of the formats allowed here at commons. I understand many of the reasons that wav format is not allowed. There is also Xiph software that doesn't acknowledge flac. Perhaps the only real reason is that flac was designed and stabilized more recently than ogg.

Thank you very much for the file! "Multiplexing" is an interesting terminology. The two files were multiplexed in real time for me. Probably accidentally or in an instance of unpredictable harmony which happened only because I know that your videos have no sound and would rather be accomplishing more than one task at a time. Those few moments were very very beautiful.

The file really needs to be gotten rid of here -- it does not belong here. It was annoying me though. Nagging. Festering. Like this maybe. The annoyance was greater than the wrong. -- Queeg (talk) 02:47, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Since you mention it on the VP, I took the permission to ask you a question about videos. ;o)

I made some short videos with my compact Nikon Coolpick 3100, and I would like to upload them to Commons, but some are much too big, even after conversion to Theora. See Category:Videos and sounds by Yann Forget and my questions here: Commons:Graphic Lab/Video and sound workshop‎. The biggest is 663 MB in AVI and still 133 MB in Theora.

There are a few opportunity to bring it up to commons: you may upload it in 2 or more parts (you can cut it in virtualdub using the <- symbol for the beginning of a part and -> for the end, push delete to cut it off, save it as avi1. Reload the source and cut of the first part and save it as avi2). Or resize it analogue the procedure described at the village pump. A command line saved as batch (~.bat) like

ffmpeg2theora.exe x-720 y-576 %1 --aspect 16:9 --index-interval 150 --keyint 300 --videobitrate 1200 --two-pass --soft-target --speedlevel 0 --audiobitrate 64

Hi Gestumblindi, da stimme ich dir voll zu, es gibt da keine Probleme! Bei dem Template geht es nur darum, dass ein Admin bzw. eine dazu berechtigte Person die Lizenz unabhängig bestätigt (für den Fall, dass die Seite aus dem Netz verschwindet oder die Lizenz nachträglich dort geändert wird, passiert z.B. mit flickr-Content öfters). Das dient damit dann nicht nur commons, sondern sichert auch dich selbst rechtlich ab, that´s all. Solltest du in so einem Fall beim nächsten Upload einfach selbst im Quellentext einfügen, als Resultat erscheint dann nach Durchführung der Überprüfung eine entsprechende Notiz in der Beschreibung. Jau, ich denke du hast mein Anliegen verstanden. Klar, im Moment braucht man das wirklich nicht unbedingt, die Lizenz ist ja wohl auf absehbare Zeit einsehbar. Probleme könnte es hingegen in 50 oder 70 Jahren geben, wenn dann jemand dein Video zur Dokumentation (wie war das damals im Ort) heranziehen sollte. Aber es wäre meinerseits rechthaberisch und kindisch, auf dem Template bestehen zu wollen; ob das Verfahren im konkreten Fall sinnig ist oder nicht, magst du selbst beurteilen. Verallgemeinert finde ich das Procedere als solches schon sinnvoll, die im Kontext produzierte Meldung hingegen weniger, weil sie unnötigerweise den Eindruck erwecken kann, dass da Zweifel an der Glaubwürdigkeit des Uploaders bestehen würden und darum geht es nun wirklich nicht. The problem may be the page Commons:Picture_of_the_day where you are able to select/change both media types (Motd/Potd) side by side. Sometimes a user simply choose a wrong template (we all make mistakes). Leider habe ich bei allen Dateien, die kleiner als 4 Megabyte sind, keinen blassen Schimmer was denn nicht stimmt. Abspielen kann ich alle Dateien sowohl im Firefox als auch im VLC Player. Das sieht mir nach 4:3 aus, sollte also richtig resized sein. Im Zweifel kann man ja bei noch aktiven Usern mal nach dem Ausgangsmaterial fragen, mit mediainfo sollte das auch recht einfach unter allen OS verlässlich durch den User feststellbar sein. Ansonsten ist virtualdub für den Zweck gut brauchbar: mit Rechtsklick auf das Ausgabefenster erhält man alle irgendwie gängigen Formate angezeigt; der Nachtei ist hier allerdings, dass sich ogv-files nur über ein Avisynthskript öffnen lassen; dazu braucht man Avisynth sowie ffmpegsource (dll extrahiert in ~Aviysinth/Plugins) und ein passendes Skript (per Editor oder besser per Avsp:

In Avsp gib´s einen Cropeditor, der die gefundenen Werte gleich ans Skript anhängt:

ansonsten kann man diese auch anschließend in Virtualdub per nulltransform-Filter und cropping ermitteln. Das Skript (natürlich den Pfad/Dateinamen in 1.Zeile angepasst) abgespeichert (mit Endung .avs) lässt sich dann direkt in Virtualdub öffnen. Hat man dort die geeignete AR gefunden, fügt man einfach dem Avs-Skript eine entsprechende Zeile hinzu:

lanczosresize(640,480)"

speichert erneut ab und wirft es ffmpeg2theora zum Fraß vor.. Dieser Weg ist natürlich kein Dogma sondern einer unter vielen, aber so mache ich persönlich sowas am liebsten. Help with OggSplit

Hello, I uploaded some wonderful old movies from Segundo de Chomon, e.g. File:Les Kiriki acrobates japonais (1907).ogv from the Internet Archive, but some of them have an additional music which should be removed. I tried to use OggSplit (with Windows 7). The program says it created files... but I can't find them. Any suggestion ? Thanks, — Racconish ^Tk 20:41, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

A simple way to do it is creating a batch file:

1. find and select oggSplit.exe
2. right-click it and sent to desktop (create a shortcut)
3. right-click the shortcut select the file properties and copy the complete path. Delete the shortcut..
4. use the windows editor to create a new file and paste the path to here followed by a single space followed by %1. (example: N:\Programm-Ordner\Video\ffmpeg2theora\OggVideoTools\bin\oggSplit.exe %1)
5. save it as oggSplit.bat wherever you want.
6. Drag and drop a ogv file on it and you will find the new created files in your source folder (in the form theora_xxxxxx.ogv and vorbis_xxxxxx.oga).

Mach ich gern, ist aber auch nicht sonderlich schwer: auf Commons:Multimediadatei_des_Tages findest du in der rechten Spalte die entsprechenden Links zu den Tages-Templates in Englisch. Wenn ein solches in Englisch bereits existiert, kannst du direkt unter dem Vorschaubild auch eine deutschsprachige Version eingeben. Ein Beispiel findest du jeweils unter "Details" auf jeder Templateseite.

Ein anderes "Standbild" für die spätere Anzeige auf der Hauptseite kannst du ebenfalls in der rechten Spalte der "Multimediadatei des Tages" unter zusätzliche Optionen->thumbtime festlegen. Okay, mal der Reihe nach:

1. Geh auf die Hauptseite
2. Unter der aktuellen Mediendatei des Tages findest du den Link Frühere Multimediadateien des Tages, öffne diesen.
3. Angezeigt werden nun auf der linken Seite (tageweise) die Motds des aktuellen Monats. Oben auf der Seite kannst du alternativ einen anderen Monat zur Anzeige wählen.
4. Direkt unter jedem Vorschaubild findest du einen Link zum Bearbeiten/Eintragen der Mediendatei für den jeweiligen Tag ("Wähle eine neue Multimedia-Datei")
5. Direkt rechts neben jedem Vorschaubild findest du einen Link zum Bearbeiten/Eintragen der englischen Dateibeschreibung: "English" . Beispiel: Deine Motd vom 26.4 English; wähle dort im Seitenmenü "Bearbeiten" und du kannst wie gewohnt Änderungen vornehmen. Über dem Kasten zur Textbearbeitung findest du unter "Details" Beispieltemplates (jeweils für die Beschreibung, das gewünschte Vorschaubild und die eigentliche Mediendatei selbst), die du bei einer Neuanlage als Vorlage kopieren und dann mit deinen neuen Daten überschreiben kannst. Der Templateaufbau sollte soweit verständlich sein. Wenn du nach einer Änderung/Neueingabe die Vorschau wählst und bereits eine Mediendatei gewählt wurde, sollte dein Text jetzt unter dem nun generiertem Bild angezeigt werden; ist dies ok, kannst du abspeichern.
6. für ein anders Vorschaubild geh wieder auf Frühere Multimediadateien des Tages; unterhalb der "English"-Links klappe die "zusätzlichen Optionen" auf, dort die "thumbtime" anklicken, unter Details das Beispieltemplate ins Textfeld kopieren, Datum ändern und die Zeitangabe für das gewünschte Frame eintragen. Zur Auswahl kannst du den thumbtimefinder benutzen.
7. Um eine deutschsprachige Beschreibung zu erstellen findest du die Links jeweils innerhalb des Rahmens um das Vorschaubild direkt unterhalb der Playersteuerelemente (für den 26.4: Template:Motd/2013-04-26 (de). Die Bearbeitung ist analog zu Englisch, nur das "en" muss noch durch ein "de" ersetzt werden.

So, wenn die Beschreibung immer noch zu unverständlich ist, sag´s ruhig; dann würde ich gegebenenfalls einen Videomitschnitt eines Eintrags machen. Gruß, --Pristurus (talk) 23:27, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello Psubhashish, as far as I know we have no special proceeder for video and audio files. So you have to do the nomination in the same way used for pictures. Thumbtime?

Hallo Pristurus, könntest Du mir helfen wie das funktioniert, bei einem Video das Vorschaubild zu ändern? Ich versuche das gerade bei diesem Video (→). Weil bei dem Frame gerade das Licht ausgefallen war, sieht es total düster aus und sollte dauerhaft geändert werden. So wie Du es seinerzeit bei dem vieldiskutierten MOTD gemacht hattest, ich schaffe es aber nicht... (noch nichtmal hier mit "|thumbtime=0:01:00.t" anscheinend). Hallo .js, lass das .t einfach weg und die 10/tel Sekunde wird per Dezimalpunkt eingebunden: |thumbtime=0:01| wäre genau Sekunde 1, |thumbtime=6:35.6| wäre 6 Minuten, 35,6 Sekunden. Zum Aussuchen eines geeigneten Frames kannst du aber auch User:Saibo/thumbtimefinder benutzen und den Wert vom dort erwähltem Vorschaubild einfach kopieren. Das geht im Moment nur auf der Hauptseite per Template, jedoch nicht auf der Dateibeschreibungsseite und auch nicht in "normalen" Galerien (beides ist ärgerlich..). Du kannst dir aber hier auf commons eine Galerie mit dieser Möglichkeit basteln, schau mal z.B. in den Quellentext (Menü->bearbeiten) meiner Spinnenseite. Nö, irgendwelche Auswirkungen auf anderen Seiten sollte dies nicht hervorrufen. Letztlich würde da nur ein entsprechendes Software-Update helfen. Nochmal kurz zusammengefasst:

• Man kann weder auf der Dateibeschreibungsseite noch bei irgendeiner Einbindung das default thumbnail ändern.
• Man kann jedesmal aufs neue und nur für eine einzelne Einbindung (z.B. im Artikel oder MOTD) das thumbnail ändern.

.js, du McZusatz hat ja bugzilla:20647 verlinkt, dort kannst du die "Softwareabteilung" nochmal auf die Notwendigkeit einer Änderung hinweisen; oder aber benutze die Multimedia mailing list, um auf das Problem aufmerksam zu machen. Es betrifft ja nicht nur Videos in Galerien, sondern in Wikipedia etwa auch die Einbindung von historischen Filmen in die entsprechenden Filminfoboxen oder auch von Tiervideos in den zugehörigen Taxoboxen. Hi, and thank you for bringing this to my attention. I did wonder about this issue myself, but I am not a legal expert and I was not sure what to do. The problem is that as far as I can tell, YouTube's attribution license is "Attribution 3.0 Unported" but the videos on my channel have various other licenses as well, such as CC BY 2.0, CC BY 2.5 and so on. (A lot are CC BY 3.0 though.) So I left them all as "YouTube Standard License". However, thinking about it now, I agree that CC BY 3.0 is the closest license and so I tried to change all the licenses of the videos on my YouTube channel to "Attribution" (i.e. CC BY 3.0). Thank you for pointing this issue out, and please let me know if there are any other issues.The Nature Box (talk) 22:17, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

Just an update on this topic. I tried to change the license of all the videos on my channel to “Attribution” about 1 hour ago. But then, when I tried clicking the “Remix this video” button on YouTube, I got the error “Video is not usable due to a copyright claim.” I think the issue is that, if you remix the video with YouTube’s system it will credit the author of the original video as “The Nature Box”, when in fact that is not the correct author. For the moment, I have left the license on my channel to “Standard YouTube license.” It clearly says in the video description of all my videos who the author is, so now I think that Standard YouTube license might be the best one. Does anyone have any advice about how this matter can be tackled? I have carefully checked the Creative Commons license (for example, CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en). Please note it saysː “You are free to Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format” and “Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially”. Please note the part saying that “commercial use” is OK. All creative commons licenses on Wikimedia allow for commercial use -- that's the whole point of Wikimedia Commonsǃ Wikimedia Commons calls itself “a database of 23,989,533 freely usable media files to which anyone can contribute” — it doesn’t say “a database of 23,989,533 freely usable media files (except on YouTube) to which anyone can contribute”.

With CC BY-SA 3.0, it says “Under the following terms: Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.

Well, in 99% of the videos on my YouTube channel I did not “remix, transform, or build upon the material” – it is exactly the original material. In 1% (perhaps less) of the videos I have removed music or blurred people’s faces, but I am not even sure that would be classified as “transform”? Therefore, I think that this part about “you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original” does not apply to my usage on YouTube, and it is not possible to do that on YouTube anyway. (Another point to mention about Creative Commons licenses is that you do not need the uploader's permission to use the file. Hi Pristurus, Thank you very much for your great contributions to Wikimedia Commons! I have a question about Media of the Day. Is it true that anyone can select a file for Media of the Day? If so, would you mind explaining how to do it? For example, I can see that this page has all the media files for the current month. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Media_of_the_day There is a caption in English “Choose a new media file” but that takes you to a new page and it is not clear at all how to select a new file from there. In short:

1. Open Commons:Media_of_the_day.
2. Go to an empty day and select Choose a new media file
3. copy the Motd filename template to the page and replace the filename and date with the new filename/date, save it.
4. go back to Commons:Media_of_the_day. Your chosen file should be visible now, open (on the right side of it) the en - link, copy and paste the Motd description template, edit and save it.
5. if you need another preview picture, use User:Saibo/thumbtimefinder to find a better one. Go back to Commons:Media_of_the_day again. Select Advanced options->thumbtime, use the Motd thumbtime template, edit it and save the page.

Bombyliidae

Hallo Pristurus, ich genieße einmal wieder Deine fantastischen Filme. Unglaublich, wie Du die Pipunculidae in den Fokus gesetzt hast. Der Film zu der Bombyliidae, die im Sand wühlt, wird als Eiablage bezeichnet. Da wäre ich vorsichtig, denn Verwandte der Gattung Bombylius sammeln Sand in ihrer Sandkammer - und danach sieht es hier aus. Damit werden die Eier verklebt, die dann getarnt in Hymenoptera-Nester gesetzt oder geschossen werden. Beste Grüße und auf ein Wiedersehen. --Dysmachus (talk) 18:53, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

Die Pipunculidae haben es mir nicht sonderlich schwer gemacht: da sie mehr als eine Stunde ca 50cm über Boden immer nur in einem kleinen Areal ihren Hexentanz aufführten, hab ich die Kamera einfach aufs Stativ gestellt, laufen lassen und im Schnitt dann das Material verwendet, das brauchbar war.

Was die Villa betrifft, so könnte es wohl so sein wie du sagst. Damals dachte ich an Eiablage, weil sich genau an der betreffenden Stelle sehr viele Hymnopteren-Nester befanden (auch diese Viecher waren genau da aktiv). Da ich heute einige Stunden wartend vor diversen Mauselöchern verbringen durfte und es in der "Eich von Niederbrechen" viele Bombylus gab, habe ich denen auch mal zugeschaut: die tauchten in der Tat mit dem Abdomen in den Sand (aber nur 1 bis 2 sec.), dann flogen sie auf und kurz darauf sah man schon den "Zielwurf" (teilweise mit Vorstrecken des Hinterleibs in Zielrichtung und Richtungsänderung zur Ausnutzung des Trägheitsprinzips).

Apropos "Eich von Niederbrechen", hätte du als Kurator Interesse an einer hessischen Lacerta bilineata für Wiesbaden? Habe da heute eine Leiche aufgesammelt, nicht mehr ganz frisch und mit Wunde im oberen Drittel des Schwanzes (wohl von einer Krähe erlegt). Ansonsten geht die demnächst nach Bonn. Na dann freue ich mich auf weitere Filme on den Wollschwebern. Das muß dann auch auf der Wikipedia-Seite verlinkt werden, da es zu den spannensten Verhaltensweisen der Dipteren zählt. Die Lacerta bilineata würden wir sehr gerne übernehmen. Ist sie eingefroren? Mit etwas Glück könnte man sie mit PEG präparieren, andernfalls natürlich in Alk und Frost konservieren. Ein früherer Doktorand in Darmstadt hat über die Tiere geforscht. Mit Bonn arbeiten wir regelmäßig zusammen und haben auch schon Material ausgetauscht. So erhielten wir auch eine Heliobolus lugubris, die in der Ausstellung steht. Auf ein Wiedersehen - in Wiesbaden haben wir gerade eine große Ausstellung zu den Zweiflüglern und eine zum Vulkanischen Glas der Eifel und Hessens. --Dysmachus (talk) 09:11, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

Sorry ich bin etwas spät mit meiner Antwort, dein Beitrag ist mir irgendwie auf meiner Beobachtungsliste entgangen. Nein, Bombyliidae-Videos von dort gibts nicht, da standen die Smaragde im Vordergrund und Fliegen mit Tele zu filmen schließt sich nun mal aus. Vielleicht entschädigt dich aber das hier etwas dafür. Den Grünling habe ich gleich in Alkohol geworfen; der war nicht mehr so prickelnd frisch, hatte wohl schon einige Tage gelegen und war bereits gut besucht von diversen Dipteren. Eigentlich plane ich für Monatsmitte/ende nochmal (wenns lohnt auch mehrmals) nach Frankfurt und Darmstadt zu kommen; mit dem Übungsplatz hat es im letzten Jahr leider nicht geklappt, da war alles voller Polizei und privaten Wachdiensten. Im Vorfeld hatte es dort wohl einige Demos wegen der NSA-Geschichte gegeben, vielleicht ist das mit den Raubfliegen ja jetzt etwas besser machbar. Was soll man noch sagen? Fantastisch, was für ein toller Film zur Eiablage. Dieses Glück ist mir bei Cyrtopogon bisher nicht widerfahren - oder war es mangelhafte Geduld? Ich freue mich auf ein Wiedersehen - habe überwiegend Urlaub im Juni. Der Truppenplatz im Autobahndreieck hat einen neuen Zaun erhalten. Möglicheweise erreicht man ihn noch von Norden kommend. Ja, zur Hochspannungsleitung mit den anfliegenden, etwas größeren Zweiflüglern wollte ich sowieso nochmal hin; und die Paarung und Eiablage von Molobratia teutonus (Okriftel) würde ich auch gern noch probieren zu erwischen. Wenn das Wetter mitspielt, werde ich nächste Woche mal in Frankfurt schauen, ob schon was zu finden ist. Was Cyrtopogon betrifft, war das wohl Glück; am Tag zuvor war ich an der selben Stelle, da waren aber nur sonnenbadende/jagende Tiere zu finden. Wiki Loves Earth 2015 - die Organisatoren sagen Danke

Hallo Pristurus,

am 31. Mai 2015 endete der Fotowettbewerb Wiki Loves Earth, an dem Du mit Deinen Bildern teilgenommen hast. Dafür möchten wir Dir herzlich danken.

Dieses Jahr haben sich 26 Länder am Wettbewerb beteiligt, insgesamt wurden dabei 108.444 Bilder hochgeladen. Aus Deutschland kamen 14.115 Fotos, was einem Anteil von 13 % entspricht. Sehr erfreulich ist die hohe Zahl von 1000 Teilnehmern allein beim deutschen Wettbewerb. Einen Überblick findest du auf unserer Ergebnisseite.

Die deutsche Jury hat Ende Juni auf einer Sitzung in Fulda die Top100 und die Preisträger ausgewählt. Eine Entscheidung der internationalen Jury wird noch im Juli erwartet.

Ein anderer Fotowettbewerb steht bereits vor der Tür. Im September findet zum fünften Mal der Wettbewerb Wiki Loves Monuments statt, bei dem Kultur- und Baudenkmäler bebildert werden sollen. Mit dem Fotografieren dafür kann jetzt schon begonnen werden. Vielleicht möchtest Du Dich sogar an der Organisation dieses Wettbewerbs oder von Wiki Loves Earth 2016 beteiligen?

Judging from the nest and markings on the bodies, I feel sure these are paper wasps in the genus Polistes. I think they could be
(1) European paper wasps (Polistes dominula)

Holger, richtigerweise hast du ja schon Sebastian Wallroth kontaktiert. Im Prinzip hat er natürlich Recht, besser handhabbar für die verschiedenen Sprachversionen von Wikipedia sind externe Textdateien. Ob du das nun jetzt/zukünftig so machst oder den Text direkt mit dem Video kodierst, liegt natürlich bei dir; aber mach auf jeden Fall bitte weiter mit deiner Videoerstellung, Eigenproduktionen sind hier auf commons ja leider die Ausnahme! We have no explicit rules for the selection process. So feel free to add whatever you want. In my opinion we should try to get a colorful mix of media from different continents and countries, historic and recent files, culture and sciences (and so on..). I also agree with that aim. We have a number of PD movies from the US, but nearly nothing from elsewhere. I will try to find more of the later. Du erhältst diese Nachricht als Teilnehmer von Wiki Loves Earth 2014 oder 2015. Dieses Jahr wird sich Deutschland wieder am Fotowettbewerb Wiki Loves Earth beteiligen. Wir würden uns über weitere Bilder von Dir freuen. Der Zeitraum für das Hochladen der Naturbilder ist vom 1. bis 31. Mai 2016.

Für die Weitergabe an den internationalen Wettbewerb ist ab diesem Jahr eine Mindestauflösung von 2 Megapixeln erforderlich. Bitte gib an, in welchem Schutzgebiet oder an welchem Schutzobjekt (z.B. Naturdenkmal, Geotop) die Fotos gemacht wurden. Wenn Bilder gar nicht zugeordnet werden können, gelangen sie nicht in die Wertung. In die Bilder eingefügte Zusätze wie der Name des Fotografen, Datum, Beschreibung oder ein Rahmen sind unerwünscht.

Seit der letzten Runde sind unter anderem Listen aller FFH-Gebiete und EU-Vogelschutzgebiete in Deutschland erstellt worden, die nun ebenfalls auf Bilder warten.

Dieses Jahr wird eine Vorjury die Vorauswahl der Bilder nach den Wettbewerbsregeln übernehmen. Als Teilnehmer aus den Vorjahren kannst Du Dich daran beteiligen. Bei Interesse bitte unter WLE-Vorjury eintragen, ein Zugangscode kommt per E-Mail.

Ein Herzliches Dankeschön für Deinen WLE-Beitrag 2016

Hallo Pristurus,

der diesjährige Fotowettbewerb „Wiki Loves Earth“ liegt hinter uns. Für Deutschland haben mehr als 1100 Teilnehmer über 18.000 Fotos hochgeladen. Damit sind wir ein gutes Stück vorangekommen bei der Dokumentation der Schutzgebiete und zu schützenden Objekte unserer Natur.

Vorjury und Hauptjury haben eine Auslese nach qualitativen Kriterien vorgenommen und im Ergebnis wurden 100 Preisträger ermittelt. Die TOP-100-Fotos von 64 Fotografen findet Ihr auf unserer WLE-Projektseite.

Doch der gesamte Fotoschatz lässt sich mit nur 100 Fotos kaum erfassen. Daher habe ich nach Themenfeldern eine persönliche Auswahl vorgenommen und diese in Form von Kalenderpostern zusammengestellt. Über ein offizielles Poster mit den TOP-100 hinaus gibt es auch Poster zu Flora, Fauna, Landschaften und zur Geologie. Für jeden Geschmack dürfte bei dieser Kollektion etwas dabei sind. Wer Lust hat kann sich eine preisgünstige Druckerei suchen und ein solches Poster für ca. 15 € im Format A1 ausdrucken lassen. Alle fünf Poster zusammen zeigen mehr als 400 Fotos von über 160 Teilnehmern.

Wenn alles klappt, dann wird das TOP-100-Poster in Kürze auch in höherer Auflage gedruckt und auf der bevorstehenden WikiCon in der Region Stuttgart (Kornwestheim) für die Teilnehmer zum Mitnehmen und Weiterverteilen vorliegen. Auf dieser vom 16.-18. September stattfindenden Konferenz wollen wir auch nächste Schritte und mögliche Projekte mit Blick auf WLE-2017 diskutieren. Vorschläge für eine WLE-Preisverleihung und einen WLE-Workshop im Rahmen der WikiCon liegen auf dem Tisch. Es wäre schön, wenn auch Du dabei wärst.

Der Kalender reicht übrigens bis Juni 2017 und soll dazu einladen, schon in den kommenden Wochen und Monaten erneut auf Fototour rund um den Naturschutz zu gehen. Möge Euch ein Poster bis zum 4. Thank you very much Pristurusǃ I'm sorry I didn't explain very well. I think the first 19 seconds of the video is Lampides boeticus and then the rest of the video is Leptotes pirithous. The patterns on the wings seem to be slightly different between the two sepcies. And Lampides boeticus has more of an orange colour around the two blue circles. Perhaps this video could be split in two?

Hi Pristurus, I hope you are enjoying this summerǃ Someone pointed out that this video https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ichthyosaura_alpestris_larva_-_2015-06-06.webm might be a fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra). The comment was "The shape of Ichthyosaura alpestris and Salamandra salamandra is different, and Salamandra salamandra has a yellowish spot where the limbs join the body". Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. bald ist es soweit: Vom 1. Mai bis zum 30. Juni 2020 findet zum achten Mal der internationale Wettbewerb Wiki Loves Earth statt. Deutschland ist zum siebten Mal dabei. Dabei können unter anderem Nationalparks, Naturschutzgebiete, Geotope und Naturdenkmäler fotografiert und die Fotos hochgeladen werden. Du hast an einem der vergangenen Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen. Deshalb laden wir dich ein, dieses Jahr wieder mitzumachen. Wir freuen uns auf deine Fotos!

Dieses Jahr ist es aufgrund der Ausgangsbeschränkungen schwieriger aktuelle Fotos zu machen, deshalb läuft der Wettbwerb dieses Mal zwei Monate. Es sind wie immer viele spannende Motive überall in Deutschland zu finden. Neben Naturdenkmälern wie alten Bäumen oder Naturparks im Gebirge und am Meer können Geotope wie Quellen und Aufschlüsse oder FFH-Gebiete fotografiert werden, um sie unter anderem in der Wikipedia zu dokumentieren. In den letzten Jahren sind zahlreiche neue Listen und Artikel in diesen Bereichen entstanden, für die wir uns über Fotos freuen. Als Einstieg für die Suche nach Motiven hilft diese Übersichtsseite. Weitere Informationen erhältst du hier und vor allem unter dieser Anleitung. Falls du im Moment nicht wie sonst in die Natur fahren kannst, findest du vielleicht in den Tiefen deiner Festplatte oder auf dem Smartphone noch interessante Fotos.

Du möchtest am Wettbewerb teilnehmen, dir fehlt aber die richtige Technik? Dann wirf doch mal einen Blick in den Technikpool und das Technikleihportal von Wikimedia Deutschland! Dort findest du Kameras, Objektive und Zubehör verschiedenster Art. Sollte noch Technik fehlen, die deiner Meinung nach angeschafft werden sollte, freut sich Wikimedia Deutschland über dein Feedback zum Technikpool.

Außerdem laden wir Dich ein, vom 1. Mai bis 31. Juli 2020 an der Vorjury teilzunehmen. Seit dem vergangenen Jahr ist der Wettbewerb zweigeteilt, das heißt wir unterscheiden zwischen den beiden Bereichen Landschaft und Detail/Makro. Zu Landschaft zählen auch geschützte Einzelbäume. Im Bereich Detail/Makro werden Pflanzen, Tiere und Pilze bewertet.

Es sind wie immer viele spannende Motive überall in Deutschland zu finden. Neben Naturdenkmälern wie alten Bäumen oder Naturparks im Gebirge und am Meer können Geotope wie Findlinge, Quellen und Aufschlüsse oder FFH-Gebiete fotografiert werden, um sie unter anderem in der Wikipedia zu dokumentieren. Auch im vergangenen Jahr sind zahlreiche neue Listen und Artikel in diesen Bereichen entstanden, für die wir uns über Fotos freuen - zum Beispiel in Bayern Liste der Naturdenkmäler im Landkreis Würzburg oder in Sachsen Liste der Naturdenkmale in Stollberg/Erzgeb.

Als Einstieg für die Suche nach Motiven hilft diese Übersichtsseite. Weitere Informationen erhältst du bei WLE 2022 – Deutschland und unter dieser Anleitung.

In diesem Jahr feiert die FFH-Richtlinie ihren 30. Geburtstag. Aus diesem Grund vergeben wir fünf Sonderpreise für die Fotografen, die die meisten FFH-Gebiete fotografieren.

Außerdem laden wir Dich ein, vom 1. Mai bis 30. Juni 2022 an der Vorjury teilzunehmen.
