Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Sotos~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. Nom de panneau[edit]

Bonjour, je sais que vous contribuez beaucoup pour les articles des Hautes-Pyrénées, et j'en profite pour vous en remercier. De fait, vous êtes quasiment le seul à avoir complété la Category:City limit signs in Hautes-Pyrénées. Cependant, les seuls fichiers "mal nommés" (non harmonisés) sont ceux que j'ai importé, à savoir ceux de la commune d'Avezac-Prat-Lahitte (File:Panneau Avezac (Hautes-Pyrénées).jpg, File:Panneau Prat (Hautes-Pyrénées).jpg et File:Panneau Lahitte (Hautes-Pyrénées).jpg). J'aurais donc souhaité que vous me disiez comment vous faites pour nommer vos fichiers, afin que je demande le renommage des fichiers. Merci d'avance. Catégorisation des églises[edit]

Bonjour

Lorsqu'il existe une catégory "Buildings of..." au niveau de la catégorie principale d'une commune, la catégrorie "Eglise of..." doit être une catégorisée uniquement dans la catégorue "Buildings of..." car les églises sont des édifices ou constructions communaux comme les autres (hôtels de ville, chateaux, lavoirs,...). Il n'y a donc pas de raison de mettre les catégorie "Eglise of..." à la fois sous la catégorie "Buildings of..." et sous la catégorie principale de la commune, car cela ne respecte pas les règles de hiérarchie des catégories (une categorie de niveau N ne peut pas appartenir à une catégorie du niveau N-1 et à celle du niveau N-2)

Nommage des photos[edit]

Bonjour

Merci beaucoup pour les nombreuses photos des communes du département des Hautes-Pyrénées que vous versez dans Commons.

Cependant, serait-il possible que vous indiquiez au moins le nom de la commune dans le nom de vos photos car uniquement "65 HP..." cela n'est pas assez suffisant pour faire des recherches globales des images d'une commune et cela n'aide pas non plus aux catégorisations.

Clés de tri des églises[edit]

Bonjour Sotos. Sur la catégorie d'une église comme celle-ci, si la clé de tri (DEFAULTSORT) indique « Eglise ... », ajouter une autre clé de tri « Eglise » à la catégorie de la commune est redondant. Par ailleurs, commons n'ayant pas évolué pour classer logiquement les lettres accentuées, la clé de tri « Boô-Silhen » est fautive. Père Igor (talk) 09:32, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments France 2019[edit]

Bonjour,

Le concours Wiki Loves Monuments France est de retour et ouvert jusqu'à 31 septembre ! Déjà 8310 photos ont été importés cette année, vous aussi rejoignez le concours !

Le concours concerne tous les monuments présents dans la base Mérimée (qu'ils soient classés, inscrits ou simplement classés). De l'imposant château aux ruines industrielles, de la chapelle au coin de la rue aux mégalithes en forêt, c'est un impressionnant patrimoine qui attend d'être photographié et documenté. Où que vous soyez il y a des monuments autour de chez vous. Enfin, vous pouvez mettre en ligne autant de photos que vous le souhaitez de ces monuments. Pour information, le règlement est disponible sur le site du concours. Nous attendons vos photos avec impatience !

Les plus belles photos seront sélectionnées par un jury national composé d'amateurs et de professionnels, de contributeurs à Wikimedia Commons et d'acteurs du patrimoine. Un jury international sélectionnera ensuite des meilleures photographies mondiales.

Si vous avez des questions, l'équipe organisatrice se fera un plaisir d'y répondre.

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photography contest hosted on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore and intangible cultural heritage from around the world, such as folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folktales, folk games, folk religion, mythology, and many more.

The campaign invites participants to document photographs, videos, and audios linked to folk culture and fit within the contest's theme. Through this campaign, you may become a part of a community dedicated to preserving our intangible culture, which has been brought and passed down for thousands of years.

How to Contribute?

The dates for the submission in the photography contest on Wikimedia Commons are from 1 February to 31 March 2023. Probably you are wondering how you can take part. It’s simple: grab a camera, record an image, video or audio under the folklore theme and start uploading ! To learn more about the rules, check out our Project page on Wikimedia Common. Here are the exciting prizes which you can win internationally.

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.
