Hello, Teinesavaii!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Categories[edit]

Hello Teinesavaii, many thanks for your very beautiful pictures from Samoa. When categorizing images, please make sure that the categories are existing. Also please avoid overcategorization and supercategories. Samoa is already sorted under Polynesia and Oceania, so it's not necessary to categorize every picture again with Polynesia and Oceania. You may check main-Category:Samoa for existing cats and sub-cats. I just created Category:Villages in Samoa and Category:Tourism in Samoa (for hotels and resorts) so that you can sort more images in - if you have. And for landscapes and views you may use Category:Views from Samoa. Many thanks --Telim tor (talk) 09:41, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your requests on my page[edit]

This is regarding your requests.

1) This is an error. The "usage" page has different errors very often. Sometimes it is working - sometimes not. There's nothing what you can do on your side, unfortunately... Check again in some hours, maybe then it is working.

2) Only admins can delete images. What you can do is the following: You as the uploader have to add the following template at the beginning of the file: correct name.jpg. So in your case it is Samoa scenic coastline with palm trees foreground 1.JPG. I will do this for you now. In the future you can add such a tag on your own. An administrator will speedy-delete those "bad name" pictures usually within 1 or 2 days.

Samoa category of my uploaded photos[edit]

I've added back in the Samoa category for all my uploaded photos. Because the sub-categories in Samoa were so confusing, I had problems actually finding my photos again.Teinesavaii (talk) 13:26, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you clarify the "rights chain" on this image? How are you in a position to grant the CC license? Or did someone else (e.g. the photographer or an heir) already grant it? - Jmabel ! talk 00:11, 31 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The image is licenced New Zealand licence CC-BY-SA 3.0 at NZ Electronic Text Centre, licence CC-BY-SA, images from book Vikings of the Sunrise by Te Rangi Hiroa (Sir Peter Buck), Victoria University of Wellington, Library catalogue, NZ. I've read all the copyright notes and thought these licensed images are okay to upload in commons. I've just started uploading historical images for Samoa wiki project. Am I wrong? I might have ticked the wrong box when uploading - but would appreciate your feedback on legality. Thank you.Teinesavaii (talk) 03:52, 31 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like you are entirely right, but probably ought to be clearer in what you put in the individual image descriptions. I'm not sure which of the many upload tools/pages you are using, but sometimes just "ticking the box" doesn't fill in everything that should be made clear. It would probably be a good idea once you've uploaded to hand-edit the "permission" and possibly "author" fields. I thin part of what is confusing is that you are putting some of the permission information in the "author" field. Also, it can be useful to say explicitly who grants the permissions when that's distinct from the uploader (you). Are the CC rights granted directly by Te Rangi Hiroa (Sir Peter Buck)? By the archive? See, for example, what I did at File:Pike Place Market - Boulton's Tavern -1962.jpg where I link the page where permission is granted, indicate who granted the permission, etc.
If you find yourself writing the same thing over and over, and it's more than a few words, you might actually want to create a template for the particular chain of rights.
Understand: I'm not the police. I'm not even an admin. I just have seen over and over what kind of things get questioned after the fact, and I'm trying to help you do this in a way where you won't have to argue over it with someone later. - Jmabel ! talk 04:04, 31 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Only an author can licence it. Author is Ernst von Hesse-Warteggn died in 1918, first published in germany. It's public domain (70 years after death of author) according to german laws : tag it with PD-old-70 (or even PD-old-80 in this case)--Lilyu (talk) 03:49, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

merci! I'll do that Teinesavaii (talk) 04:02, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is plenty of images :) i'll help you !
i see you are sometimes not sure with copyrights ([1]), you can contact me anytime if you need help with licences ^^
Really, don't tag with a creative commons license something which is not your own work, or that is not already tagged CC-something somewhere else ;)--Lilyu (talk) 04:07, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
merci de votre aide. que permis devrais-je cocher pour les images de vieux livres ? Appréciez-le vraiment.Teinesavaii (talk) 04:11, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for trying in french ^^, but you can speak in english, it's ok.
For the 1902 published book 'Samoa Uma' by Llewella Pierce Churchill, like File:Lauaki Namulauulu Mamoe.jpg or File:Fale Samoa Construction 1902 .jpg, it's harder. I'm sure it's public domain, but it's harder to find for which legal reason, because we don't know what is the date of death for the two possible photographers. And it is US photographers publishing photos in England (outside USA). I will ask around.--Lilyu (talk) 04:53, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Iaorana samoan cousin, i'm from tahiti.--Lilyu (talk) 05:02, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For File:Pala a Samoan girl 1896.jpg (place a : before File as in :File:Pala a Samoan girl 1896.jpg to create a link and not display the image), the copyright license is ok :) --Lilyu (talk) 05:21, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Va'a canoe, Matavai village, Savaii, Samoa MS.JPG
Cool ! a wood va'a for the wikipedia article ! There is not a lot of this left, nowadays in tahiti, most people do va'a as a sport, and have modern plastic canoe that are designed for speed.--Lilyu (talk) 05:23, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for the help! that's my uncle's fishing va'a - there's still plenty of them in Savai'i. Teinesavaii (talk) 06:12, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For File:Pala a Samoan girl 1896.jpg, the tag PD-US is ok :) (i was wrong)

for images from 1902 published book Samoa Uma by Llewella Pierce Churchill, like File:Lauaki Namulauulu Mamoe.jpg or File:Fale Samoa Construction 1902 .jpg, the correct tag is PD-1923, as it is published outside USA before 1923 by non US citizens. I was not sure, but than i saw the photographers were from apia (not american samoa). Do you know date of death of photographers ?

I'm sure, it's in public domain in US, because of that, but the PD-1923 say it has to be public domain in the country of origin too to be uploaded on commons. What is strange is that the template say it has to be in PD too in the country it was first published :s I don't know if it's an error of the template that look confusing, or if its really needed for uploads on commons --Lilyu (talk) 06:24, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

yes yes, for all images from 1896 published book Talofa, Samoa: A Summer Sail to an Enchanted Isle, the PD-US was good, sorry. i made a small mistake because of the wording of the PD-1923 template, which i'll see if it needs to be corrected.

Hi, the problem is that this sentence : You can use it but only if its free to everyone, even if you alter it. No commercial use of this image is permitted. is in contradiction with the licences you used: GFDL + CC BY SA. And Commons dont accept restrictions over commercial use (see COM:L).
I have appeal the speedy deletion, because multilicencing allows to share this file under non "free" licences, as long as there is at least also one that comply with COM:L policy. Though, it would be better if you remove the "non commercial use" sentence, and just licence it with GFDL & CC BY SA 3.0.--Lilyu (talk) 05:05, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The way, he/she put that phrase into the description, is not "multilicencing". Legitimate multilicencing would be to put it under CC-BY-SA and CC-BY-NC, though that wouldn't make any sense. --Túrelio (talk) 16:24, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I took the photo myself so I'm the author. It was one of the first photos I'd uploaded to Commons and I hadn't understood the different types of licensing and ticked the wrong box. I'll do it again.Teinesavaii (talk) 20:30, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gday, I have undertaken the file rename. While doing so, I have not created a redirect, and I have delinked the image from where it was being used on WP. Would you be so kind to make the appropriate commentary on the image's talk page to reflect your rename request. Thanks. billinghurst sDrewth 13:23, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
