Thank you for creating a template for the maps of ukraine. Good idea. --Steschke 09:27, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Pixelquelle is not PD[edit]

Hi, despite your claim, Image:Flaming cocktails.jpg is not PD. Their License is rather annoyingly strict and stupid. -- 217.234.54.161

Copyright tags[edit]

Hi. You changed the borders and image size on some copyright tags. I restored the borders so they look similiar and the tags are more easily recognized. Also the image size of 50px seemed a bit too small, and i changed the images to 64px. Basically I don't mind the exact design of the tags, as long as they are looking similiar. See Commons:Image copyright tags visual. Hope this is OK with you. -- Chris 73 23:55, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Colosseum.jpg[edit]

Hi, there is already a file called Colosseum.jpg in the wikipedia in some languages. Could you change the name in something like: "Colosseum by night.jpg". That would make ik possible to place the beautiful photo in wikipedia for those languages. I would appriciate a lot! Dub 01:57, 12 dec 2004 (UTC)

Xmas message[edit]

You were right about Santa Hat and I'll delete the picture. And I answered about your deleting Xmas message on the Main page talk page. That wasn't very nice of you, to the say the least. villy 08:18, 25 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Image:Identical twin brothers.jpeg[edit]

You deleted Image:Identical twin brothers.jpeg giving the reason: "Stock.xcnhg is not Public Domain, nor is its license compatible with Commons.", what exactly is not "compatable with the Commons" about "There are no usage restrictions for this photo." ? --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 08:19, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Photos and Categories[edit]

Thanks you for your improvement of my link to dvd.jpg with [[:image:dvd.jpg]]. :-)

Also I have observed that you added all my DVD photos [[Category:DVD]]. This not a good idea, because in Wikimedia Commons you must categorize on other way. Would you be so kind to read the article Commons:First steps again. Thanks --ocrho 11:32, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

This is arguable. Many people, myself included, think that images should be put in categories as category pages generate automatic galleries. See Commons:Images on normal pages or categories:Vote. ed g2stalk 10:37, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for your option and link to the voting. I have voted for normal pages. I think you should waiting with your actions during the voting is runing (until 14.1.2005). --ocrho 21:19, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Template:Information[edit]

Hello Ed g2s, User:Arnomane still would like to force his new template without further discussions. For example. he changed the German upload page, which now tries to force you to use this template. I've seen your comments on the template discussion page and I agree with you. I think, the "other versions" parameter is quite obscure (I counted that it is used only on 7 of 120 randomly selected pictures description pages now, that is about 5%), more improvements are required and a larger group of people should be included in this discussion - because it affects all uploaders.

Discussing with Arnomane himself is quite useless - I tried it a lot. He don't like to change anything and forces all people to use it as it is. He even goes through the image list and just replaces descriptions by his template. On one of my "picture of the day", he even removed text parts.

I'm an administrator in the German Wikipedia and contributed more than 230 images to the Commons. But I'm still not sure, where and how this could be discussed here. Do you know what could be done to improve this template? How can more affected people be included? -- Thank you, Aka 07:48, 4 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've created the above, BTW, from the photo library output, which you might find useful.

How long is this image going to hang around on commons with a copyvio tag?--Duk 13:36, 15 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

you tell me - you're the admin and the one who tagged it as a copyvio. If it needs to go on Commons:Deletion requests then why didn't you list it there when you tagged it as a copyvio? The reason I ask is because It was used at .en, leading to its own page and copyvio notice there, which needs to be cleaned up after the image is deleted from commons. --Duk 04:41, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No, Ed just updated the template from one t'other, SPUI was the one who listed it as a copyvio.
James F. (talk) 09:43, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ed tagged it as a copyvio, Jd. What are you doing here? --Duk 16:02, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Quite, check the history properly. ed g2stalk 11:39, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ed, you tagged it as a copyvio, and you are an administrator. --Duk 16:02, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you changed the tag from {{copyrighted}} to {{Copyvio}}. So were you planning to answer my questions (Ed)? They are simple questions. --Duk 15:58, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Read James' comment again, I "updated" the tag. Template:Copyrighted is a deprecated version of Template:Copyvio. I went through the" what links here" for the old template and changed them all to copyvio. SPUI tagged it, so (s)he should list it if (s)he thinks it should be deleted. ed g2stalk 16:05, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Wonderfull, now I understand, and I bet it didn't even hurt to explain, Ed. So does the image need to be listed on Commons:Deletion requests? Your note on my talk page wasn't clear. --Duk 16:14, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't take that tone on my talk page, we did explain, it's not our fault you didn't understand. The image should be listed on deletion requests - but I'm not the one who thinks it's a copyvio. ed g2stalk 16:21, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Check your facts before taking an agressive tone[edit]

Ed, I ask simple, straight forward questions, in good faith for a good reason. And I get what seems like backsass from you and JD. That's my impression, I'm sorry if you think I'm being agressive. --Duk 16:23, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

And when I answer you in kind you take offense?--Duk 16:25, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
"What are you doing here?", "it didn't hurt to explain" and "were you planning to answer my questions" are not phrases you use in polite conversation. Just try and be more civil in future and remember that tone-of-voice doesn't convey in text. Hostility doesn't help anyone. ed g2stalk 16:38, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'll admit to being short, and apologize for my lack of civility (in later posts).--Duk 16:55, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You can't change the past[edit]

Hi Ed. In January, you deleted Image:Closeup of an blue-green human eye.jpeg (correctly, since it was believed that Stock.xchng photos weren't allowed here). You also changed the November 11, 2004 "picture of the day" to a different picture. You can't change the past! I suggest that if a POTD is subsequently deleted due to being unfree, the dead link should be left alone at the POTD archive. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 30 June 2005 18:34 (UTC)

WoW[edit]

Hi Ed g2s,
Could you please block The Wow and fix image Wikiquote.png ?

Thank you, Get_It 00:23, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What kind of an idiot uses gps to (presumably) get the scale and geometry right for a map they make, and then fails to add a scale to the map? Every map worth its salt has a scale. See SPUI's example at Wikimania Media Competition to see how it's done.

Commons:Administrators RFA[edit]

Hi Ed,

Can you take a look at Commons:Administrators. The voting there appears to be almost inactive, and given that the window for nominations is 7 days, it could probably benefit from a little more attention. -- Solipsist 06:41, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the disclaimers have any bearing on the license. The images are still released under the GFDL. ed g2stalk 12:11, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The GFDL states that in any Modified Version you must "Preserve any Warranty Disclaimers". dbenbenn | talk 12:32, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RfA[edit]

Are you archiving the requests for adminship when you process them? If not, we probably should start doing so. ed g2stalk 17:09, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Some time ago, people were asked to create a subpage in order to submit a request for adminship. These subpages still exist, so that it is a kind of archive I guess. Then it changed, I don't really know why. Now, I don't archive but of course I do comment when I delete a vote : they are still reachable through the history page. Of course you're welcome to create a real archive system if you want so. villy 09:47, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I think I changed it to a multi-page system very early on, but it was changed back a few months later. Anyway I have changed it back now again and have compiled an archive from the various page histories: Commons:Administrators/Archive. If you could list nominations here when they are complete that would be good. ed g2stalk 20:31, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, you've done a neat and useful work ; I'll list nominations there from now on. villy 07:48, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

LU maps[edit]

I'm not 100% happy with the SVG renderer yet, so I'd like to keep the PNGs for now. I'll delete them when it's time. ed g2stalk 23:13, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Alright. What's wrong with SVG rendering? Do you think it's a problem with inkscape that will eventually be fixed? dbenbenn | talk 13:08, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering what make and model of bluetooth headset is the one in the image you have on the following page. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Bluetooth_headset.jpg

Travelcard Zone 1[edit]

Thanks for your very neat geographical Travelcard Zone 1 map. There are a couple of nits that it would be great to correct if you could: see the talk page. Thanks! [2] 82.70.194.38 09:16, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Travelcard Zone 2[edit]

If you're just highlighting Zone 2, shouldn't Zone's 1 and 3 be grey and Zone 2 be white? I understand that it's a crop from a full map and they alternate, but because this is highlighting an even‐numbered Zone couldn't you swap the backgrounds? It would help. Also, any ETA on the SVG version? Nickshanks 21:55, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

JavaScript-Screenshots[edit]

The Screenshots you deleted were from the Mozilla-Firefox, not from Internet-Explorer. Why is there a copyright from Microsoft? Or have I to make the screenshots under a Suse-Linux? Please tell me! Thanks --S.Möller 20:15, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've replaced all my screenshots (12 at the moment) with new ones I've taken under "Suse-Linux" with the webbrowser "Konqueror". I hope it will be o.k. now - if not please tell me. Thank you very much for telling me the problem with the copyright. I didn't know that all Windows-Screenshots are under copyright from Microsoft.

deletion of "Image:King Albert II of Belgium 2.jpg[edit]

Hi, you have deleted this image. That picture is still in use on several projects. Deletion of images used are projects is not responsible. That is what why wikipedia-users start to hate commons.

You have not give a notice to the uploader about this. User:Mtcv. I can not find the notification about this on the page Commons:Deletion requests. Your deletion comment is very cryptic "(NC, ND)". Please clarify your actions. Please respond here. Greetings, --Walter 18:18, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The image was marked as coming from an EU website, thus prohibiting commerial use (Non Commercial, NC), and derivative works (ND). These images are not acceptable on Wikimedia Commons. It is the responsibility of the users who add the images to the articles to check the license first. ed g2stalk 18:13, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Do you not find you you have also a responsibility against the Wikimedia projects who are using that image? Commons is for creating a catalog of free to use files, yes that is true. But also to serve the wikimedia projects. And if there are files that have a license that can not be used for commons that should be deleted. But not when projects are still using them! That is just plain inresponsible. That image should be fase-out. Or kept until a new file can be found that can be used freely. I have now replaced the deleted photo Image:King Albert II of Belgium 2.jpg whit the national side of the euro coin of Belgium. It is not great but now the link is not broken anymore and there some type of picture of the king.
Can you point me where you have informed the uploader of this file about the deletion nomination and the entry about this on the Deletion requests page? --Walter 11:25, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That is not how we deal with copyright violations on commons. The are "speedy deletions". It would be nice if I could inform every user, and check every implementation across the projects, but that would make the task restrictively laborious, and it's more important to get rid of the unsuitable material. ed g2stalk 20:14, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Compass[edit]

Hi. Image:Compass.svg is misleading. The shadow implies that the compass hangs vertically over a table or something, which is not really the way it's used. Can that shadow be changed to suggest that the compas is lying horizontally on a table? Thanks. AdiJapan 09:01, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not revert another admin.[edit]

The debate was closed by another admin. Arbitrarily reverting me only serves to encourage those that we do not cooperate, and that commons is useless and pointless. If you have an issue with my decision to close the debate, don't take it up on the same page, thereby demonstrating your faithlessness. Take it up on my user talk page or with an arbitrator. But do not revert me again.

Plenty of people saw that debate and participated in it, and there was a definite agreement that the use of the Olympic Flags would not violate the terms of usage. Contrary to your bringing up the same arguments that have already been discussed. Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 04:59, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The resolution of the debate was that Commons was adequately tagging and sourcing the images in order that it be clear that their usage must adhere to the regulations of the copyright owners. We have done so. Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 14:46, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I believe it would be against Commons interests to delete images as useful as these. I have created a tag specific to the IOC on which I am strongly encouraging debate: {{Copyrighted IOC}}. Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 15:08, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Potd2 template[edit]

Hi while I agree with some of your changes I do not with others at [3]. I did not use to much subtemplates for the captions and such as this makes the system rather complicated and as I think directly entering the translation at a certain usage is more transparent and the little more text is worth it. With respect to: <div class="{{Potd/float {{{float|center}}}}}"> it will break on the Motd2 template. I don't know why but it does not center it. Thus I made it directly. Those Croatian images[edit]

I'm afraid all uploads User:Neoneo13 made on November 12, 2005 are likely to be copyvios. I'm on a slow link the next couple of days and thus can't follow this through, but it appears that they might all be scanned or copied from tourist office publications, not just Image:Dubrovnik (near), Croatia.jpg. See e.g. Image:Split Riva.jpg. I'm also sure about Image:Croatian coast.jpg, although I didn't find it yet (as I said, I'm on a slow link—image loading takes ages!). And likewise for all his other uploads from that day. And what's with Image:Cakovec Stari grad.jpg, uploaded on October 24, 2005? He says in the upload comment it was "fair use", but he tagged it as {{Copyrighted free use}}... Lupo 19:40, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commons-l subscription[edit]

Hello Ed g2s,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 22:51, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps that's the reason why you don't understand the logo copyright stuff, because your country has the "sweat of the brow" kind of copyright, according to which non-exceptional logos are actually copyright protected.[4] So please please don't misunderstand my position, it does not apply to your country, but only to those coutries with design patents and non-sweat-of-the-brow-like copyright. --Rtc 02:24, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright question[edit]

Hello, I have a question regarding Image:LeeSmith.jpg which you have tagged. I downloaded it from a web source that did not establish any copyright information. I then proceeded to alter the image a bit; I cropped its borders to make it smaller, and changed it from color to b/w. Does this qualify as a new image?
Thanks, your advice is greatly valued. Em-jay-es 06:20, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, it does not. Do you really think you can fool copyright that easily? No copyright information = No permission. If you are cropping the image you have broken law in two ways: a) you copied the picture without permission, b) you changed the picture without permission. Make a photo yourself, that qualifies as a new image. --Rtc 13:58, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for Rtc's bluntness, but essentially he's right. A modified image is a w:derivative work. Thanks, ed g2stalk 14:39, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

metro maps[edit]

Hi, I was fascinated by your maps of the underground. Great work.

I've been living in London on and off for about 8 years now. These days I split my time with Oslo. I'm back in London now for about a year, I wondered how the size of Oslo metro compared to the London underground. I thought it'd be cool to draw a map with the Oslo metro superimposed on top of the London underground. It'd give a nice sense of scale to both the cities - whose metro maps we often use to orient ourselves. So a couple of questions:

  1. If I collected the GPS data for the Oslo stations (or if someone did it in the meantime), would you be willing to run a map for the two cities on top of each other? I assume a simple correction for the centers of Oslo and London could be used. I'd be happy to try to do it myself, but I'm not very experienced with PHP and SQL.
  2. Perhaps this could be a fun project for more cities - London, New York, Moscow, Vienna, etc..
  3. Comment on the London maps - you may be aware of the 'ghost' stations that exist on the tube. It'd be cool to have them included in your maps. These stations include the British Museum station, York Way, and others. Check the tinyurl page: yahcau (i was spam blocked for posting the url)

Thanks again. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

after short investigation I've found out that it was you who deleted this image. At first I hope you are really sure it was a copyvio, the image originated at Flickr and it was not on a free license. Out of curiosity - have you asked on the requests for deletion? But more important - please, be that kind and clean up the mess now, and swap the images on all the projects on pages which are still linking to this image. Beginning with iPod, going through and checking various Wikipedias.

My point is I'm a sysop on pl: and while we are pro Commons, we do expect Commons admins to clean up after themselves or at least notify about deletions of media files we are actually using. I know the software we are all using (MediaWiki, namely) is not that friendly we all wish it were and Commons sysops have loads of things to do anyway but that's anoying and difficult to do that job for us, additionally with no sysop powers on Commons and without prior notification. This deletion was spotted out by me so fast only by chance.

I hope you understand my point. Even if I were a sysadmin on Commons it wouldn't be very nice to expect me (or any other person) to clean after some other admin. Sysops are expected to know their ways ande all responsibility for their actions.

Best regards and thanks for understanding,

aegis maelstrom δ 16:40, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ed. I see you have deleted the above-mentioned image which I uploaded using FlickrLickr. You state it is an "obvious copyvio." It's not so obvious to me, or I would not have uploaded it in the first place. Before I did so, I looked around the Internet for that very picture and could not find it. Is the copyvio obvious to anyone else? Did you discuss the deletion with anyone before pushing the Delete button? I could not find any such discussion. Kind regards, and keep up the good work. – Tintazul talk 15:10, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your arguments could probably be rebated one by one... but as a whole they make all the sense. I never worry about shots being "too good" to be an amateur's work - nothing prevents a professional photojournalist from sharing his pics on Flickr, in low res, and with borders/watermarks. Nothing, that is, except exclusivity contracts with their employers; or if they're free-lance, I would think they would sell all of the picture's rights to someone. What are the odds of that? 0,01% or lower – but if you just delete all the professional-looking pictures, I am sure it drops to zero {humour}. So, let's just say you are 99% right and are being practical; I'm claiming the remaining 1% of reason {humour} and say I'm erring on the user's side.
If I may ask, please use a fuller description, other than simply "obvious copyvio" - it wasn't obvious to me (it is more evident now.) Now, had you said "copyvio: low res, no EXIF, border, professional shot" I probably wouldn't have asked; this is useful as I had thought all pics were subject to discussion before deletion. You were right, though, and I will use a similar set of rules when evaluating Flickr images. Cheers – Tintazul talk 16:50, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gibbs building pic[edit]

Hi there, I've shoved a summary box on your great pic of the Gibbs building - cd you add a bit of description, since only the category hints to the ignorant reader that this is Cambridge.

I know it's tedious doing detailed descriptions, but I used to work in the photo archives at en:Bruce Castle and trust me, by the time they're 100 (even 50) years old, the descriptions are incredibly valuable (social/architectural/materials/etc history). Pics as good as yours are will hopefully be in use for a v long time and by people from many contexts. Make easier? Ta, JackyR 19:11, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Administrative notice[edit]

Deutsch

Dear Ed g2s. I am writing to you to inform you that because of inactivity, you may lose your adminship on Commons.

Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a two-week poll on the proposed policy's talk page).

If you want to keep your adminship, you have to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days. Note that if you don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will then lose the adminship anyways.

Thank you,

Hi Ed g2s. Thanks for signing at this page. Please note that your sysop-rights will be removed the next time we run an inactivity-section without any new notice, if you do not do 5 admin-actions till then.

LUL maps, again![edit]

Hi there, I'm a user on wikipedia (OutrageousBenedict) and I'm very interested in your project about geographical underground maps. I'm trying to get hold of the svg file for the entire system. I have a few old maps (30's) of the network produced by LPTB which are extremely accurate. I'd like to integrate them if I may, however doing it to a .png file would be very time consuming, so I'm after the svg to edit in a vector graphics programme. If you could get in touch with me I'd really appreciate it!

Many thanks!

PNG demo resizing[edit]

Hi Ed – your recent re-rendering of File:PNG transparency demonstration 1.png used a different resolution (800×600, rather than 320×240) from the previous, thus breaking it on the Portable Network Graphics page. Presumably this was not the intention – I’ve fixed it for now by resizing, but of course this degrades quality.

Perhaps you’d rather re-render it at 320×240, or perhaps provide two resolutions? Thanks!

100m progression[edit]

Hi,

you appear to be the author of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:World_record_progression_100m_men.png. As I interpret the image, you give the respective marks surrounded by an interval dependent on the timing device, specifically using 0.1s for hand-times. However, some early hand-times did not have that high a precision. In particular, I suspect that the very first entries were measured in 1/5ths of a second. This also explains the seeming discontinuity.

(This obviously also disregards other complications, such as the hand-times and FAT not being strictly comparable, even with security intervals.) 94.220.254.186 07:29, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Emirates Stadium East Side Night Composite Picture.[edit]

Hi,

Would love to talk to you about your brilliant picture and potentially acquiring your permission to use the picture as a basis for a piece of artwork. There is a real dearth of quality nighttime shots of The Emirates and yours is the only that has caught my eye, I intend to use it as a reference picture to get the perspective right on a piece that would look into the viability of a series of late night Stadium paintings that try to capture the magic of a midweek, late kickoff. Depending on the success of the work I'd be tempted to look at a limited run of prints for sale and obviously that is why I'd really like to gain your permission or even discuss purchasing the rights to the image.

I'm a design student coming into my final year and I'm currently going through the process of raising funds for my degree show. So in my spare time this summer I'm currently creating sport related artwork and offering the works for print. http://jonnyculkinkartart.tumblr.com/ Here is a link to the work so you get an idea of what I'd be trying to create.

I've been having real trouble getting in touch with you as for some reason my account is deciding it's "logged out" when I try to get in touch with you via email or discussion, so apologies if this message has come up somewhere it shouldn't, I admit I have no idea what I'm doing on Wikipedia as I've only created this account for this purpose.

My email address is jonnyculkinATgmail.com (replace the AT with @), if you wouldn't mind getting in touch on there in order to discuss this further as I'm not sure how replies would work on this site.

Thanks,

Jonny

Hi Ed, in 2004 you uploaded your picture File:Long Beach, CA at night.jpg. It is used on the Dutch Wikipedia in an article on, well, Long Beach. The caption there previously read, literally translated, "Downtown Longbeach by night". That was recently changed to "(...) by evening". Both are correct as the English night could mean both "evening" and "night" when translated to Dutch, depending on the context. It's nothing important, but it made me curious nonetheless.
