Color Cube[edit]

Michael, That's a great job you did on Image:RGB_color_solid_cube.png.

About 20 years ago, I saw a reference attributing the concept of mapping the color space R, G, B into the spatial coordinates x, y z to produce your color cube as coming from Erwin Schroedinger. Since then, I can't find the reference. Do you know if that is correct?

Also, did you use Gouraud_shading?

Thanks - 05:30, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

I have no idea regarding Erwin Schroedinger. Sorry I can't help you. As for the image, it was rendered in POV-Ray, a raytracer. It is too advanced to use Gouraud shading. SharkD (talk) 06:07, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: structure drawing software[edit]

For File:Tapiolite.GIF I used Diamond (Crystal impact), which is not free, and which I use rarely. It would be more convenient for me to talk at english wikipedia, I only notice commons posts on my talk page. Materialscientist (talk) 01:54, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks. I thought you had maybe used POV-Ray. Are there any other images you used this software for? SharkD (talk) 02:05, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, up to a dozen with Diamond (then modified with GIMP), and maybe a few hundreds with ViewerLite (raw or brushed up with GIMP). I usually upload to en.Wiki first, thus only some are on commons. Materialscientist (talk) 04:35, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re. Software used?[edit]

For rhombicuboctahedron I just uploaded it from English Wikipedia as explained in its description page. I think it has been done using Stella. --JRGomà (talk) 08:07, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for responding. I created the template Created with Stella to mark images created using Stella if you'd care to add it to your images. Thanks. SharkD (talk) 03:21, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Software used?[edit]

I am not Ben but as far as I know he uses DS Visualizer for most of his molecule pics including File:Beryllium-hydride-3D-balls.png. It is free but you need to register first. Personally I prefer PyMol. Cheers, Splette (talk) 18:09, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks. However, the file (especially the shading) appears of a somewhat higher quality than the images on the Discovery Studio website. SharkD (talk) 03:18, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind. Ben himself responded below. SharkD (talk) 03:18, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Molecular graphics software[edit]

Hi SharkD,

I use CrystalMaker 8.1 and Accelrys DS Visualizer to make most of my images.

Ben (talk) 18:13, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply! I created a series of templates to mark the software used to create 3D images. For instance, and Created with Stella. I can create ones for CrystalMaker and DSViz if you'd like to use them on your images. SharkD (talk) 03:19, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ahhhhh! That's why you've gone around asking everyone :-) Yes, I think these templates are a good idea. It would be nice to have one for Pymol. It is used quite frequently, especially for proteins. Splette (talk) 08:57, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I could create the template, but I just got done categorizing over 400 POV-Ray images and many others, and don't want to do it again unless there's a tool to make it easier. SharkD (talk) 14:53, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, here you go: Created with PyMOL. SharkD (talk) 14:59, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, Thanks!!! I'll use it right away... Splette (talk) 01:38, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Plato[edit]

Excuse me for answering so late. I made File:Plato-12.png using Blender & YafRay. If you need the source file, i might send it to you. :) KoenB (talk) 18:35, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you could attach the source code somehow to the image page, that would be great. I'm not sure if Blender/Yafray save in a binary or ASCII format. At the very least, please upload higher resolution versions of the files. 1024x1024px at the very minimum. SharkD (talk) 05:26, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The "source code" is in binary format. I guess that is bad? I uploaded a higher resolution version of Plato-12.png. Others to follow. KoenB (talk) 12:52, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Datumizer!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Try embedding the PNG image of the man (as well as the feet, hands, etc.), then creating the boxes and text labels using SVG elements. SharkD  Talk  22:26, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Thank you for going back and making new, improved versions of some of the images you uploaded a few years ago.

I support the deletion discussions where the old version is basically the same as the new one or a crop of it. I opposed where the new one was different or when the new one was a high-resolution version of a crop of the old one. In those cases, it is worth keeping both files. However, if you are inclined to create a new, high-resolution version of the ones that I opposed which either duplicate the old ones or which the old ones could be re-made as crops of the new ones, let me know and I will support deletion.

Also, keep an eye on this page in the Farsi Wikipedia. There is a bot that reverted your edit. I reverted the bot, but if the bot reverts again, the bot-owner may need to be contacted. I can't speak Farsi so I'll be of no use there unless the bot-owner speaks English (or Spanish). Davidwr (talk) 21:36, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

File:Munsell 1929 color solid transparent.png[edit]

SharkD - I'm sorry I missed your tagging this image as a copyright violation, because I don't believe it's a copyright violation to develop an image based on the data when it's clear that there's a significant amount of independent creative judgment in generating the image from the data. Also, it's possible, but not certain, that the data is from the NIST, and therefore public domain. Can you please reconsider? Argyriou (talk) 01:25, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Argyriou: Where would be a better place to discuss this and get more feedback? SharkD  Talk  03:58, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure. The image was used on en:Munsell color system, so the talk page there might be appropriate. It may also be an interesting question for Commons talk:Derivative works. I don't check Commons very often, but if I know there will be discussion I'll try to check in more. Argyriou (talk) 23:12, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Nethack falcons eye class selection.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Music intervals frequency ratio equal tempered pythagorean comparison[edit]

I don't know if you have noticed the discussion of File:Music intervals frequency ratio equal tempered pythagorean comparison.svg, created by you, at Wikipedia:Talk:Cent (music)#Please check the Music intervals frequency ratio equal tempered pythagorean comparison file, but it has been pointed out that the Pythagorean scale chosen is a very odd or rare version. I have created File:Music intervals frequency ratio equal tempered pythagorean comparison on C.png as a correction (you may compare the tables I created in both files descriptions). However, I feel that your file was superior in many ways, and that a recreation of your file using a more common Pythagorean tuning, such as found in my file, may look better. Note that my file uses thirteen Pythagorean pitches, the tritones at each end of the tuning (a W:Pythagorean comma apart), since the tonic is in the middle of the sequence of perfect fifths rather than at the beginning.
