Color Cube[edit]

Michael, That's a great job you did on Image:RGB_color_solid_cube.png.

About 20 years ago, I saw a reference attributing the concept of mapping the color space R, G, B into the spatial coordinates x, y z to produce your color cube as coming from Erwin Schroedinger. Since then, I can't find the reference. Do you know if that is correct?

Also, did you use Gouraud_shading?

I have no idea regarding Erwin Schroedinger. Sorry I can't help you. As for the image, it was rendered in POV-Ray, a raytracer. It is too advanced to use Gouraud shading. SharkD (talk) 06:07, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: structure drawing software[edit]

For File:Tapiolite.GIF I used Diamond (Crystal impact), which is not free, and which I use rarely. It would be more convenient for me to talk at english wikipedia, I only notice commons posts on my talk page. Materialscientist (talk) 01:54, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, up to a dozen with Diamond (then modified with GIMP), and maybe a few hundreds with ViewerLite (raw or brushed up with GIMP). I usually upload to en.Wiki first, thus only some are on commons. Materialscientist (talk) 04:35, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply! I created a series of templates to mark the software used to create 3D images. For instance, {{Created with Persistence of Vision}} and {{Created with Stella}}. If you could attach the source code somehow to the image page, that would be great. I'm not sure if Blender/Yafray save in a binary or ASCII format. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thank you for going back and making new, improved versions of some of the images you uploaded a few years ago.

I support the deletion discussions where the old version is basically the same as the new one or a crop of it. I opposed where the new one was different or when the new one was a high-resolution version of a crop of the old one. In those cases, it is worth keeping both files. However, if you are inclined to create a new, high-resolution version of the ones that I opposed which either duplicate the old ones or which the old ones could be re-made as crops of the new ones, let me know and I will support deletion.

Also, keep an eye on this page in the Farsi Wikipedia. There is a bot that reverted your edit. I reverted the bot, but if the bot reverts again, the bot-owner may need to be contacted. SharkD - I'm sorry I missed your tagging this image as a copyright violation, because I don't believe it's a copyright violation to develop an image based on the data when it's clear that there's a significant amount of independent creative judgment in generating the image from the data. I don't know if you have noticed the discussion of File:Music intervals frequency ratio equal tempered pythagorean comparison.svg, created by you, at Wikipedia:Talk:Cent (music)#Please check the Music intervals frequency ratio equal tempered pythagorean comparison file, but it has been pointed out that the Pythagorean scale chosen is a very odd or rare version. I have created File:Music intervals frequency ratio equal tempered pythagorean comparison on C.png as a correction (you may compare the tables I created in both files descriptions). However, I feel that your file was superior in many ways, and that a recreation of your file using a more common Pythagorean tuning, such as found in my file, may look better. Note that my file uses thirteen Pythagorean pitches, the tritones at each end of the tuning (a W:Pythagorean comma apart), since the tonic is in the middle of the sequence of perfect fifths rather than at the beginning.
