Translation Admin requests

I would like to request translation admin rights having continuous translator contributor. Recently I get acknowledged to the translatable pages and marking them for enumeration by other users though I can do it on my own to help other translation admins. Request for Account creator status

Hi, Was pointed here by Jeff G over at the Help desk,
Long story short at times I can take over 100 images all of which get uploaded here - I'm constantly having to sort files in to 50 batches in order to upload so I was wondering if I could be granted account creator status simply to bypass the 50 upload limit,
I have no intentions of creating accounts or anything like that I would just like it so I can upload everything in one go instead of 50, then 50, then 50 etc etc,

I don't want to raise general concern, but when looking at File:Davey2010 - DSCN6648 08.jpg or File:Davey2010 - DSCN6648 06.jpg from your last batch, I have the feeling that at least a small part of the image classification should be done before uploading.

@Krd and Davey2010: I don't expect this to help. According to Special:ListGroupRights, you need the mass-upload flag. This is available for administrators (fat chance you'll get that without consensus!) and license reviewers (actually not going to happen without consensus either..). Even Extended uploaders never had it, and never will. I intend to propose raising the current limit of 50 a bit, at least for users with the autopatrolled flag. Very soon however autopatrolled users are going to find a new button, "Import images from Flickr". Well I'll upload all later and let you know if it actually works :), Given the fact anyone can easily upload over a thousand images from Flickr in one go I fail to understand the actual point to a ratelimit here but there we are, I do agree the ratelimit should certainly be bumped up to those trusted or to those who hold a right that's not willy-nilly dished out, Anyway not saying you're wrong but yeah I'll give it a bash and shall report back later (will probably upload around 9/10/11pm (UK time) :) –Davey2010^Talk 13:20, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

@Davey2010: go to Special:UploadWizard, click "Share images from Flickr" and enter https://www.flickr.com/photos/th3truthphoto/albums/72157687034727630. I see "You can select up to 50 files to upload.", I would be surprised if you didn't. The limit of 50 files has existed for.. I dunno, never paid attention, but probably long. I could propose raising the limit now, but chances are that would be met with "let's see if nothing unexpected (bugs or whatever) pop up when https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/operations/mediawiki-config/+/485487/ and https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/mediawiki/extensions/UploadWizard/+/485141/ go live". @Davey2010: The limit of 50 is specific to UploadWizard. Flickr2Commons, Commons:Commonist, Commons:VicuñaUploader and any other methods are not affected by this limit. (you may want to try them..) Given that I'm taking 100 images per day for 5 days (500) and then another week (700) means by a week and a half I would've taken and uploaded atleast over a thousand so as such I really need something that can upload 100 in a day as opposed to having to sort everything by 50 (and to make things 1000x worse the spare laptop I use to upload the images the mouse is constantly disabling itself virtually every day so as I said I really need to something that can upload over 100 in one go as opposed to well ... this), Thanks, –Davey2010^Talk 02:39, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

@Krd and Davey2010: do you still need the account creator right?

Davey2010, as I explained above, administrators and license reviewers are exempt from the limit. You'd probably have a better chance when you apply for the latter, but you better also plan on occasionally working on the backlog at Category:License review needed. I recently dumped over a thousand requests in Category:Unreviewed files from Pixabay so there's plenty of work. Request translation admin and GWToolset rights for Chicocvenancio

I would like to have these rights to be able to mark pages for translation and use the GWToolset.

I am very aware of how the Translate extension works and have made several translations here and on meta (with this and my former contractor accoun User:Chicocvenancio (WMF). I believe this would spare other users some work, and that I can competently perform the tasks.

I am involved on several GLAMs and experimenting with GWToolset is an option for uploads.

Content deletion required

See Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#User:Ralf Roletschek. Sadly it seems at least one of our admins is unaware of the problem of OUTING another user. I have tried and failed to get them to remove the content. Please could a crat delete the outing discussion and revisions, and remind Jcb and other admins that publishing the real life identity and occupation of a user on Commons is a serious offence, even if the user apparently has published their name here, and even if the information is easily searched for, and regardless of whether the information is correct. -- Colin (talk) 16:45, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

  • A.Savin, I don't want to be in argument with you but ask you also read en:WP:OUTING. Here I quote a bit:

"If you see an editor post personal information about another person, do not confirm or deny the accuracy of the information. Doing so would give the person posting the information, and anyone else who saw the page, feedback on the accuracy of the material. For the same reason, do not treat incorrect attempts at outing any differently from correct attempts. When reporting an attempted outing take care not to comment on the accuracy of the information. Outing should usually be described as "an attempted outing" or similar, to make it clear that the information may or may not be true, and it should be made clear to the users blocked for outing that the block log and notice does not confirm the information."

As we all know, a full name is not unique in the world. So googling a name is unreliable. When you deny one match, all you do is make other matches more likely, possibly to the extent that the match becomes obvious. So this is an area where we should say nothing and delete all such discussion. What's more, Commons:Paid contribution disclosure policy says that on Commons paid editing/uploading does not require disclosure. So while on Wikipedia there is tension between paid-editing investigations and OUTING, on Commons there should be none. We have no right to investigate whether images are paid for or whether anyone involved is an employee of any company, so we have absolutely zero defence when attempting to out someone as a member of a company/agency. Of course it is permissible to ask politely (though not demand) in order perhaps to clarify who took/owns a photo, say (see Commons:Guidance for paid editors). -- Colin (talk) 09:28, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

account creator

Hi all. I am writing to see if a crat could assign me the account creator right so I can move pages with no rate limits. Currently, there are many (many in terms of thousands) aviation files that contains naming errors such as Boeing B.777 instead of Boeing 777. Boeing aircrafts either go by Boeing 7X7 or B7X7, Boeing B7X7 is not the correct usage, and saying Boeing Boeing 777 is definitely wrong (Boeing B.777) In addition, Airbus files have similar naming errors too, although they aren't as bad as Boeing's. The dot (.) in Airbus A.320 should not be there at all. I did some checks and all of the websites either use Airbus A320 or A320, with the former being more common. I've already moved 1k-2k files already but I'm always hit by the ratelimit and for unknown reasons, the massrename stops. Request for Account creator (noratelimit)

This request was approached with a starting point of "crap" for uploads that include several contributors, including me. It is not surprising that there is no apparent rush to comply.

With respect to the technical issue of cat-a-lot dropping changes because of the user's account not having noratelimit, could you reference a Phabricator ticket please? It is not obvious that this would be the cause of dropouts compared to other issues, or that a work-around is not as simple as re-running the tool on the same selection, based on pragmatic experience not a lot of extra effort.

Note that I have successfully used very slow pywikibot scripts, in some cases with more severe than usual throttles, to make very large mass changes. A slow housekeeping run over several days, has distinct benefits compared to super fast mass changes. --Fæ (talk) 15:56, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

A week or so later they were raised, so most users don't run into problems anymore.. unless you categorize many, many, many files. Looking at the search results, actually not very many, I count 82 files, most from Faebot. I did upload something like 80,000 avionics files in total, so maybe I just stuck to the standard subst:chc which ended up elsewhere. Not sure how many different uploaders are in your to_do cat, you may benefit from working out the list.

If as it appears, you are re-catting or otherwise housekeeping 140,000 files and would like to do more of these very large change projects, I strongly recommend you do not use cat-a-lot but run simple command line changes from python + pywikibot. This gives you far greater control about doing multiple housekeeping fixes at the same time, and gives you detailed control over stuff like throttling. Other solutions like AWB might be even easier to run, but I stopped using that tool years ago. --Fæ (talk) 16:27, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Can you link some of those 82 files? There should be none so I want to investigate this. I see three files: File:RAF Avia Antonov AN-26B Bakema-1.jpg which is categorized as Category:Images uploaded by Fæ but actually uploaded by Russavia, a result of bad dupe merging. On File:106TH ANNUAL BANQUET (held by) FRIENDLY SONS OF ST. PATRICK (at) DELMONICO'S (REST;) (NYPL Hades-269842-4000001208).tiff, a Russavia sock touched that file to remove {{Check categories}} so I will make no difference to it in the end. File:Let L-410UVP Turbolet, Lithuania - Air Force JP6757852.jpg was categorized by a Russavia sock. This file is also in Category:Files uploaded in cooperation with blocked accounts.. was that a project in cooperation with Russavia? - Alexis Jazz ^{ping plz} 16:51, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello. User:GifTagger is an admin bot, which is inactive for almost 4 years. User:Alexis Jazz brought up this issue [8]. Consequently, I left a message [9] for its operator, User:McZusatz, who are themselves inactive for about 1.5 years. Should I initiate its de-adminship process now, i.e. send a formal user talk message and an email to the operator? Or should I ignore it now and postpone the issue to the next de-adminship phase, which is Feb-Mar 2020? Please note that tomorrow is the deadline for the current de-adminship phase. Please advise. Requesting Account Creator

I frequently move pages and I have got stumbled upon ratelimit several times. (Sorry I don't know if there is any log to check it!) And I am also involved in real life wiki activities like trainings around wikimedia projects including commons. So account creator right would be great help to me. I know I am only allowed to use account creator rights in real life events for real people who are actually present for the events. @Krd: , I requested account creator some ten days ago, I saw you resolved other requests of all kinds(even those which came later on) but this is kept pending even after ten days. So I am curious about what could be the reason, I had requested these rights to make my page/file moving seamless and I already have account creator rights on enwiki, I had similar rights on testwiki and mrwiki (it was for offline work I do!). So I don't think there should be any issues in granting me these rights as I am familiar with account creation process. Hi,

I'm part of the Wiki Loves Monuments international team. We are photos of national winners. As part of our publicity, I have to reach out to the winners and ask for their permission to use their photos on our social media. So I end up sending the same email to many people because of which I believe I trigger the rate limit and get blocked every once in a while. Is it possible to give some access that would stop triggering that flag. Even a temporary privilege for a month or two should be sufficient.

I thought that this would be a simple change to the infobox code, but it turned out to be a lot more complicated than I expected, see the discussion at Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Interface_admin_request. Thanks to @Zhuyifei1999: , the gadget has now been implemented, and the discussion about enabling this by default is now at Commons:Village_pump/Proposals#Displaying_multiple_images_in_the_Wikidata_Infobox_using_Javascript. I would still like to have interface admin access so that I can maintain that code and other codes as needed in the future. Flag UploadStatsBot

Hi there,

UploadStatsBot is popping up on Recent Changes as it is not a flagged bot. It was approved in 2014, but not assigned the bot flag per the operator putting "N" in the bot flag requested box. That is a broader topic needing a general discussion. Hiding small automated edits makes sense. But should major changes be hidden just because they where made by a script? Considering myself only one of its maintainers, with the primary goal to offer a value to Commons' users, you may assign the bot user group to UploadStatsBot. I can set the bot flag in the bot's source code after it has been flagged, whenever I have some spare time left for it. However, please note that assigning the bot user group to a user means more that just flagging edits as bot: Rate limits disappear and the attack surface as well as incident expand on malfunctions potentially increases. -- Rillke^(q?) 14:35, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

ipblock-exempt

With several 4-hour long train journeys a month, these are useful quiet times to review and consider Commons projects. However, the train WiFi, depending on provider, tends to block even viewing Commons pages, so I sometimes use an independent IP redirect service or attempt to use the mobile addresses which may not normally blocked for reading. Even then, the anti-vandal approach of restricting open proxies means that even when I can log in, it is not possible to post edits while on the train. I have not analysed the IP blocks, but my presumption is that these are known commercial open proxies that may be used far more widely than the train providers alone. There are methods I have used of working around this for urgent purposes, like tunnelling to my own headless server, but doing so has more potential to compromise browser sessions, or attract external hacks, and tends to be awkwardly slow.

Following IP block exemption, requests for the exemption can be made privately but should be made directly to checkusers or bureaucrats, so raising here as there is no confidential reason for this request. I think that an exemption would enable me to log in and edit using a free service like that run by Cloudflare, or via a TOR browser, making it easier to respond to issues when travelling, such as from bot activities. My presumption is that more complex services like running a shell on toolforge would fail, which is probably just as well.

Anyway requesting the exemption or better advice, so I can try editing Commons when travelling. It seems low risk as my account has 2FA set up and I would only log in using my main account. --Fæ (talk) 13:58, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
