Mirzə Ələkbər Sabir adına Mərkəzi Şəhər kitabxanası[edit]
Mirzə Ələkbər Sabir adına Mərkəzi Şəhər kitabxanası - 1918-ci ilin axırlarında Azərbaycan İstehlak Cəmiyyətləri İttifaqı Kooperasiyasının mədəni-maarif şöbəsi Azərbaycan xalqı üşün xeyirxah bir iş görməyi – kütləvi kitabxana açmağı qərara alır. Bu, istehlak cəmiyyətinin gördüyü işlərin ən yaxşısı idi. Lakin azərbaycanlılara məxsus kitabxana aşmaq çox da asan iş deyildir. Çünki o vaxtadək Azərbaycanda mükəmməl bir nəşriyyat olmadığlından kitabxana üçün, ələlxüsus kütləvi kitabxana üçün Azərbaycan dilinfə ədəbiyyat tapmaq mümkün deyildi. O zaman müəllimlərin və ziyalıların əlində müxtəlif vasitələrlə toplanmış bəzi kitablar var idi. Bunlar isə onların özlərinə məxsus kitabxanalarda saxlanılırdı. Bir çox çətinliklərdən sonra bəzilərinə kitabın dəyərindən artıq pul verməklə, bəziləri isə özləri pay verərək xeyli kitab əldə etmək mümkün oldu. Beləliklə Xəzər Sahili İstehlak İttifaqı İdarəsi öz payçılarının hesabına Azərbaycanda birinci kütləvi kitabxananı açdı. İlk illərdə kitabxanada bir neçə yüz kitab və çox az miqdarda oxucu var idi. Kitabxanada olan kitablar ərəb və fars dillərində Orucov qardaşları tərəfindən nəşr olunan islam tarixinə və köhnə mövzulara həsr olunmuş kitablardan ibarət idi.
1200 cilddən ibarət olan kitabxanaya xalq kütləsinə tanıtmaq üçün Azərbaycanın böyük demokrat xalq şairi Sabirin ölümünün 10 illiyi ilə bağlı Mirzə Ələkbər Sabirin adı qoyuldu. Beləliklə kitabxananın rəsmi açılışı sənədlərdə 1919-cu ilin mart ayı kimi göstərildi. 1920-ci ilin ilk günlərində isə kitabxana keçmiş Əzizbəyov küşəsində yerləşən 13 nömrəli binanın ikinci mərtəbəsində yerləşdirildi. O gündən kitabxana bu binada fəaliyyət göstərir. Kitabxana yeni binaya köçdüyü zaman onun kitab fondu türk, ərəb və fars az miqdarda Azərbaycan ədəbiyyatından ibarət idi.
Bu mədəniyyət ocağının yaranmasında N.Nərimanov, D.Bünyadzadə, Ə.Haqverdiyev, Y.V.Çəmənzəminli, M.S.Ordubadi və başqa dövlət xadimlərinin böyük qayğısı və nəcib təşəbbüsü böyük rol oynamışdır. Elə çətin şəraitdə bu insanpərvər adamlar vaxt tapıb mədəniyyət ocaqlarını xalqın istifadəsinə verilməsinə çalışmış və məqsədlərinə nail olmuşllar.
1920-ci ildən başlayaraq Sabir kitabxanası öz işlərini genişləndirmək üçün imkan əldə edir. 10 il sonra 1929-cu ildə kitabxana fondu 12300 nüsxə, oxuculsrın sayı isə 4000 nəfər olur. Oxucuların kitabxanaya cəlb etmək və yaxşı kitabları kütlə içərisində yaymaq üçün kitabxana ədəbi müsamirələr, mübahisələr, ədəbi mühakimələr təşkil edir. Nəticədə yüzlərlə yeni oxucu kitabxanaya gəlirdilər. Kitabxana Azərbaycan qadınlarını da kitabxanaya cəlb etmək məqsədilə 1922-ci ildə “Oxucu qadınlar” dərnəyi də təkil etmişdir.
Kitabxana oxucuların tələbinə görə ictimai-siyasi, ədəbi və elmi məruzələr təşkil etmişdir. Mədəni-maarif ocaqlarına kadrlar hazırlamaq işində öhdəsinə düşən vəzifəni ödəməyə çalışan Sabir adına kitabxana respublikamızın kitabxanaları üçün mütəxəssislər hazırlamaq işində görkəmli yer tutur. 1938-ci ilə qədər kitabxana işçiləri hazırlamaq üçün xüsusi məktəb olmadığından kitabxana işinı təyin olunanlar öz ilk təcrübələrini M.Ə.Sabir adına kitabxanada keçirdilər.
Sabir kitabxanasının müvəffəqiyyəti, onun hesabatının düzgün qurulması ilə sıx bağlı idi. Kitabxana Azərbaycan, rus dillərində elmi, kütləvi-siyasi və bədii əsərlər ilə təmin edilərək həqiqi-kütləvi kitabxana halını aldı. Kitabxana öz fondunu ən yaxşı kitablarla genişləndirməyə və təkmilləşdirməyə başladı. Kitabxanada Azərbaycan və rus abonomenti,oxu zalı, kitabişləmə, səyyar və biblioqrafiya şöbələri fəaliyyət göstəriridi.
Sabir kitabxanası gündəlik hər bir məsələni həll etməyə, kitabları kütlə içərisində yaymağa çalışmışdır. Kitabları daha dərindən öyrənmək üçün kitabxanada ədəbi dərnək təşkil olunmuşdur. Bu dərnəkdə kitabxananın fəal oxucuları sırasında Ə.Haqverdiyev, C.Cabbarlı, A.Şaiq, M.S.Ordubadi kimi görkəmli sənətkarlar ədəbi gəncliyə rəhbərlik etmişlər. (Sonralar isə bu dərnəyə Musa Ələkbərli, Qəşəm Nəcəfzadə də rəhbərlik etmişlər). Azərbaycanda kitabxanalar arasında ilk bibloqrafiya şöbəsi də 1941-ci ildə bu kitabxanada yaradılmışdır.
