Help with SVG[edit]

This is a continuation of the discussion at Commons:Help desk#Instructions on vectorizing raster image using Inkscape?.

You can try this link (one minute, it works, the other it doesn't, I don't know why): [1].

I'll be more than happy to receive assistance with this task, as well as help with the SVG maps. I do, however, need a street map of New York City. I don't know if I could use Google Maps for this, but I doubt it. --Imdanumber1 22:17, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

That's what I mean: I need that image vectorized and colored red. There are several others like it, but as soon as I learn Inkscape well enough, I guess I can handle the SVG image creator myself. --Imdanumber1 22:50, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

P.S. Try the e-mail again: you could try the Special:Emailuser/Imdanumber1 feature. And please leave me messages on my talk page. Click here to leave me a message. --Imdanumber1 22:50, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Your excellent map (it looks like very many hours of work) has been added to the Oxted Line page. As it's largely in Surrey I have made very minor changes (communities, detail of the layout between Ashurst and Eridge and at East Grinstead) to the western edge and uploaded a new version. Attribution to you, as original artist. If you get a chance, please look it over and make sure I have done you justice! Any style changes (particularly fonts) are system imposed, and not from any preference for mine over yours. Grateful thanks. --Moonraker88 12:49, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Cancel my last: there were problems with the font and some of the text was truncated or missing altogether. I think there's an option to save fonts as paths, but I'm new to Inkscape and I'll have to check this out. My uploaded image is at Image:Kent Rail rev.svg if you want to cast an eye over it, but your version remains on the Wikipedia page for the Oxted Line. --Moonraker88 13:13, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
Got it to work by saving in .png format (which Wikimedia Commons doesn't like). Once again, thanks for the original!--Moonraker88 16:21, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I've removed your Kent Railways map from the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway page of Wikipedia because it shows completely the wrong route for this railway! However, your map is an excellent idea. Can you correct it, so that we can put it back again? You have the RHDR route correct from Hythe to New Romney (the 1927 line). However, beyond New Romney this line continues to Dungeness (the 1928 extention), whereas your map follows the standard gauge line (long closed) from New Romney in a completely different direction, towards Lydd. The 1881 standard gauge line to Dungeness approached Dungeness at a slightly different angle too - correcting this will allow for accommodating the RHDR line correctly through to Dungeness. 84.67.222.148 02:31, 23 May 2007 (UTC) (Brother Timothy Titus on Wikipedia).

The crossing of en:High Speed 1 under the Themse is shown at the wrong location; it is actually further East. It is east of the Dartford Crossing und more or less just under the 380-Volt-Line crossing the Themse. Have a look at the location of en:Ebbsfleet International station (follow the geo-coordinates lead from there to Google Earth) and look. BTW, Google Earth shows the completed station and tunnel entry, Google Maps an earlier stage of construction.

Also, the HS1 shown from the Southfleet Junction to Fawkham Junction is confusing, since it shows it using an old railway line (Gravesend to Swanley) which no longer exists. Any way, it might be a good idea to show closed down lines in grey insteas of black. Or as a dotted line instead of a dash line. What do you think? Greetings from L.Willms 08:54, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Einfach!
ClemRutter 21:05, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your gift. If you go to Dartmoor sometimes, have a look for a special pub. Some years ago I stumbled in there. I don't know the name or the place where it was. It has 6 or 7 rooms each with a different but perfect interieur. The main room is a dchungle room so perfect that you expect the stuffed animals will bite you - and that before the first pin. The other room I visit was a dining area of a ship, build in a way that that it give you the impression of a driving boat. I tried taking photos but the barkeeper a person as bizzare as his pub stopped me. If you interested in this things perhaps you are more lucky. --Marku1988 09:14, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Kent rivers[edit]

Hi Clem I have found an excellent map showing what appears to be all (and I mean all!) the drainage pattern of Kent. It shows in detail every stream tributary of the Cray, Medway, Stour, as well as every other single watercourse (eg the River Dour) in the county. I discovered it in The Rural Landscape of Kent by SG McRae and CP Burnham 1973, published by Wye College. Now that we have all the watermills listed, it seems to be important to get some idea of what all those listings are about. As an example, the River Darent article lists mills at Kemsing, Ightham and Sevenoaks, to the east of where your map goes when the river is running to the west. The Ordnance survey map clearly shows a tributary completing an inverted T, as does the map I now have. What is also clear is how close the tributary sources are to each other, especially insofar as the River Medway is concerned. It is an object lesson in river capture - the River Len and the headwaters of the Stour are only yards apart; and this is so for the Beult/Teise and the Rother headwaters. The map was described as being the Kent River Authority area (unfortunately disbanded in 1973). I am quite happy to redraw it, since I feel that it is important to see the full picture of how the county is drained by its rivers, as well as illustrating the streams mention with watermills etc.

What do you think? Peter Shearan 17:21, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Looking for Stone House Hospital Photos[edit]

Dear ClemRutter, I am a wikipedian/wikimedian presently working on an entry for Stone House Hospital in Stone near Dartford (the former City of London Mental Hospital). I have tried without luck contacting other people at sites such as Flickr or Picasa, but have been unable to find any GFDL or otherwise licensed images. If you have, or know of someone who has, an image of this hospital, especially one which shows its central brick tower, I would be most grateful! Many thanks, Arctichistorian01 16:28, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, many thanks for your note. I did manage to find a good, though very small photo -- if you have the ability to get some better ones, I would be grateful. I understand the place is being converted into luxury flats; maybe a pic of the construction might be possible. Kind regards, Arctichistorian01 14:47, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

The system is going to work marvelously! As you put this new template on gallery pages, it should be nice to remove also the corresponding line at User:Multichill/Category suggestions - that avoids doing things a second time. Greetings, Havang(nl) (talk) 16:38, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Template:Populate category[edit]

Hi ClemRutter, i created Template:Populate category and a bot to work with this template. With this template you can tell my bot to work on a certain category and which gallery to get the images from (example). Havang is already playing around with it and it seems to perform good. Could you also give it a go? I think this can be very useful for User:Multichill/Category suggestions. Multichill (talk) 15:21, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

A marvelous job of Multichill, his bot [3] is running with OLYMPIC speed, good for gold. Havang(nl) (talk) 15:36, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Chinese kanji stroke order[edit]

Hi ClemRutter,

I noticed that you added a category to the Commons:CJK stroke order project because there were a host of images on several pages connected with the project that were uncategorised.

There are two things that I found odd about this. First of all was the name of the category. Kanji are Japanese characters of Chinese origin so the term "Chinese kanji" is an oxymoron since kanji aren't Chinese any more (any more than w:tempura is Portugese). Furthermore, most of the characters in the category display the stroke order of simplified Chinese characters, most of which have not been confirmed to share a stroke order with Japanese.

The naming of the category should probably be changed to better reflect it's scope. Which brings us to the second oddity. You said that the category was for uncategorised images. Most of these are automatically added to categories through Template:SOlicense. I am not aware of a single image in that category that wasn't categorised when you created the category.

Perhaps you could clarify this. --Swift (talk) 06:44, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

The following copied was copied over from User talk:Swift. (03:38, 10 October 2008 (UTC))
I bow to you expertise. If I recall correctly I was faced with merging in an orphan category with multiple uncatted images-with an existing well catted group, so the decisions I made were on the principle of doing the least unreversible damage. Apologies if it has caused problems.ClemRutter (talk) 08:28, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
I'm still confused. Can you possibly clarify which categories these were? It seems that all of these images were generated by this project and were already categorised by Template:SOlicence. Which images weren't uncategorised?
Can you provide logs of all of the bot activity on this matter? I looked in the contribution histories of the two bots, but they both seem to be working on multiple tasks simultaneously and don't leave much information in the edit summaries. --Swift (talk) 03:38, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello, ClemRutter!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi! Multichill and I are getting tired of this mapping project so lets stop now. Only small cats are back so only a few ones should end up as uncategorized.

I noticed that some of the mappings looked a little strange. Like Category:Points <> http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=9611090. And Category:Hairdressers <> http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=9611170 . I do not know who made the mapping for these but it is important to check if categories match (check if images look the same). --MGA73 (talk) 20:16, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

Footpath icons[edit]

Hi there. Just stumbled on your footpath icons in the commons when searching for suitable icons – for footpaths. However there are a few glitches I wish to point out:

  • when stacked side by side, the river in the ford icon does not properly align with river icons:

  • nor with each other:

The same problem is evident when stacking waterbank icons on top of one another

Sure. Just give me a few days. Are there any more you need? --ClemRutter (talk) 19:55, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks in advance. I think there also sould be a T junction (as well as inverted T), plus some 90-degree curves/corners. Also, riverbank icons where the river would curve away from the path would be ideal for longer stretches of parallel water&footpaths. Tve4 (talk) 13:25, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Working now- must be a cache on the server.--ClemRutter (talk) 10:17, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
Design issues:- I had intended these icons to represent a small brook/burn/stream rather than a river, hence the broken nature of the line, but it is useful to have them engage with other folks water features. The footpath was always the focus. I never thought of the brook (can I use the German word BACH as all the symbols have german names) as needing to connect- but now it does, deliberately with a slight offset. User:Peeky44 has made a series of icons for off centre watercourses.Category:Icons for railway descriptions/water- which I see no evidence of anyone using- but I have used the same offset.
In doing further FUSSWEG + BACH icons, the question is how will they be used? Will they be used? Does the FUSSWEG take priority over the BACH or is it the other way round? Do we want BACH or Peeky44 WASSER? It is easy, as you are aware to add all the green paths to all of Peeky44's symbols- but there will be a hell of a lot of them to do a definitive job.
Any thoughts--ClemRutter (talk) 10:17, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

why scala[edit]

scala, because in comparison to other languages running on the JVM it seems to be the most useful. i like scala because it does a lot of things right java doesn't: the syntax is much more concise, the typesystem is really useful, and writing code in a functional style is practical. -- 84.153.87.25 19:52, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Categories[edit]

Hi, I don't use a bot, generally I doubt they could categorise the images in as accurate a fasion (look at the Geograph images that were moved on mass in January/February most of which are still in inappropriate categories). I will have a look through your contributions when I get chance and paste the appropriate categories in. Generally I do it as I come across them or do it to the latest files and then if a user appears to be uploading a lot I do go through their contributions page. commonist[edit]

hello clemrutter,

as an editor who has edit the commonist page, I was hoping you can help me. For the past 17 days I have attempted to find a suitable program to upload images to my wiki.

i ran commonist by clicking http://djini.de/software/commonist/ws/commonist.jnlp which started the program. where do i add a wiki to wikis.txt file in this case? I can't find the wikis.txt file.

thank you so much for your hard work,

Adamtheclown (talk) 03:56, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Several points. I have downloaded and installed Commons 0.4.17 on my Linux machines. I can find the wikis.txt file in /home/clemrutter/commonist 0.4.17/etc/.. . To locate it I could run the Search for Files.. tool in the Places Tab. The version you are using- is 0.4.23 and is run in a jnlp packet. I tried to do the same- but
  1. It won't let me upload to wikimedia:commons
  2. I can't find a copy of wikis.txt on my (local) machine
So it looks as this way of using Commonist is a big no-no.
Commons:Tools/Commonist will explain how to download and install java, and then Commonist. I hope this confirms that you are not going mad, and gives you a few leads for a way forward.

--ClemRutter (talk) 14:26, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Clemrutter, thank you so much for responding.
Irrelevant mini-rant
I have spent the past 18 days with literally dozens of hours, asking dozens of questions with no response, thousands of edits re-writing incomprehensible and incorrect guides, trying several different programs, on several different wikis. I think most people would have given up now but my stubbornness is a blessing and a curse :)
I was about to rant on my user page about how as someone that has over 200,000 wiki edits and has been editing since late 2005, has hosted five wikis, knows how to use parsers and install extensions, and extremely complex templates, and is still unable to use these upload multiple programs and is unable to get help speaks volumes about how far the community still has to go in making wikis friendly to everyone.
If you have ever noticed, the wiki guides need a lot of work, and the technical descriptions on Wikipedia are god-awful because they are written in technobabble.
Anyway, thank you for letting me mini-rant here.
Thank you so much for your response confirming what I thought about the 0.4.23 version. I will add this to the guide which still needs extreme improvement.
I tried to install the wiki manually. And got stuck. I will post what happened in a second, if you don't mind helping me. Adamtheclown (talk) 19:17, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Installing commonist[edit]

Any help you give me I will add to the mediawiki commonist page, which will help countless others!
My two computer systems which I tried this on:
Windows Vista 32 bit (terrible program) and Windows 7 I already have an updated 6.0 version of java.

1. Download the two files. (not mentioned in the mediawiki tutorial):

  • commonist-0.4.23-bin.zip binary
  • commonist-0.4.23-src.zip sourcecode

2. Extract both the binary and sourcecode files to your desktop. [4]

The mediawiki instructions on this are incomplete and I need to rewrite. Combining both the commonist page and mediawiki instructions I did the following

3. Open Start >> run [5]

4. Type cmd.exe and click OK [6]

5. Change the directory to c:\ by typing chdir c:\ [7]

6. Find the location of the bin folder. [8]

7. In the cmd window, change the directory to the folder where you located the bin folder. Type cd followed by the location of commononist.bat on your computer. [9]

8. Type in bin/commononist.bat and press enter. [10]

This is where I commonist.bat and myself get stuck. What next? There are obvious errors in what is displayed. Adamtheclown (talk) 20:07, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Mirroring File:MeophamGreen.svg[edit]

Hi Clem, I was wondering whether you could mirror File:MeophamGreen.svg or make a new image of it that is mirrored left to right. The idea is to make a new schematic of the gears (with more detail, ...) based on the watermill schematic (modified). At present, the orientation of both images isn't right, mirroring would make both images much better understandable. Thanks in advance. 91.182.68.120 09:03, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

I have flipped- File:MeophamGreenRaw.svg to File:MeophamGreenRawMirror.svg. There are several similar files in Category:Meopham Windmill- some have text others are there to act as templates. Feel free to use the best one.--ClemRutter (talk) 10:23, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
Any chance you could also add the text ? I allready improved the main windmill article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windmill ) For the text though, it would help to have the parts indicated on the image.

91.182.61.226 10:59, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

mmm Not top of my todo list. All you need to do is open the file in Inkscape. Ctrl Shift L to see if there is a text layer. Select the object and move to the new spot- and then spend two or three days lining them all up! I'll give a hand later--ClemRutter (talk) 11:29, 3 December 2010 (UTC).
I'm still working on the main article and making the appropriate subarticles, so I can't work on this for the moment. I guess I'll just mirror my image instead, and perhaps other that might come in, it doesn't look as nice, but perhaps it'll go quicker that way. If it doesn't we can work further with this image.

Re: Chatham Dockyard[edit]

Hi,

(Glad to see its watchlisted ;)). I'm not entirely sure how best to work out Chatham (and to a lesser extent Portsmouth). My opinion, which your message confirms, is that the historic dockyard in Chatham is part of the naval base of Chatham (when was the historic bit made open to the public?). The active centre of the base in the post-WW2 period is different to the historic part. However the historic centre is/was still part of the base, so logically belongs in the naval base category (see also the WP take on it Category:Royal Navy bases in England).

The historic dockyard probably deserves a distinct category from the rest of the base - if there is media of the base? I certainly don't think the buildings category was appropriate, though it might be appropriate for certain images in the category. The dockyard is not a building itself, but a set of buildings, slipways, dry docks etc etc.--Nilfanion (talk) 20:44, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

I arrived in Chatham in 1981, just as the closure was announced. Everything except buildings, in the Georgian dockyard were flattened. I have tried document it in Chatham Dockyard with maps File:ChathamDefences post1820.svg. The buildings themselves have an world wide architectural significance (I think) as they were always the most technologically advanced and formed the precursors to the Lancashire cotton mill (my current obsession) and thus fire proof design and the factory system. The bit that we understand as the naval base was round the basins- the bit we know as St Maryś island- this is where the nuclear subs were refitted. The story goes that the inhabitants on the new houses are not allowed to eat any vegetable they grow- heavy metals and radiation! So to save electricity they just plug their carrots in the light sockets and watch them glow!
I really can't say whether the naval base did use the redundant Georgian building as I didn't have security clearance. I think the computer system was at that end though but it has been demolished its not there now. --ClemRutter (talk) 00:47, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
Sounds familiar - and certainly worth trying to arrange a visit to see if there's worthwhile stuff locked away. I'm predictably more familiar with Devonport, where the South yard (the old bit) is pretty much surplus to requirements, and is used mostly for civilian work rather than any naval stuff. It could (and should) be opened up to the public like the historic part of Portsmouth but...
Actually there is the same problem you have with Chatham at Portsmouth, except Portsmouth is still an active naval base of course. Its bizarre that there isn't a category for HMNB Portsmouth itself, only for the historic bit - you'd think we'd have dozens of snaps of ships at anchor!
Back on topic - In both Chatham and Portsmouth, the modern historic bits that are basically museums probably belong in sub-categories of the (non-existent) category for the naval base itself, though it be better to create a "former" bases subcat. Remember the topic of "Chatham naval base" is not the same thing as "Chatham naval base in 1980", but also includes things like "Chatham naval base in 1750". The ships built at Chatham are relevant to the naval base, as are your excellent maps. It goes without saying that photographs of base when it was active belong in the category for the base too. I'm not sure what exactly the Chatham one should be called, but that's a side issue.
By the way, you might want to sort out Category:Chatham at some point (some Geograph stuff is dumped there). A bit of nit-picky feedback on the maps too - the gun wharf at the south doesn't need a . in its label, and in the later maps there a "700" obscured by a wall line to the east :)--Nilfanion (talk) 11:44, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Please Don't duplicate categories[edit]

This category Category:Wear Mill, Stockport you created is just a duplicate of Category:Weir Mill, Stockport that already existed and you seem to have done this knowing another category existed as you linked to it. Rather then create a duplicate add alternative names to a discription and/or rename the origional, create a redirect if you think it needed. I redirected the empty category to the one in use, I don't actually care which spelling is used but please only use one category rather than duplicate. as this ends up in media being all over the place and hard to sort out! Oxyman (talk) 12:56, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Wear Mill, Stockport This was a difficult one- I created both cats on the same day. I explained in the text why. Your edit is fine. No matter how far back you search (like 1870!), both spellings were used though Wear wins on Google count. I don't know of any equivalent case. When we get to classify the geograph upload there will be many more images- Folks who Hotcat, who search the existence of one name will never see that there is a cat for the other spelling- hence the need for 2. All I can say is well spotted.--ClemRutter (talk) 17:04, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for answering, Hotcat does 'see' redirected cats and it places media put in these into the tergeted cat, so it's a good idea in these instances to create a redirect, I have been trying to categorise some of the geograph images and have found instances of duplicated cats such as Welwyn/Digswell Viaduct, I went with Category:Welwyn Viaduct in the end. Hopefully redirects will avoid this! As an asside I have been trying to categorise various stations (to cater for the geograph upload) and it can be a challenge finding out if a different name is due to the station being renamed or it being a totally diferent one nearby, possibly closed! Best Oxyman (talk) 18:57, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Cat-a-lot and Geograph[edit]

I've been doing some experimenting, and have managed to a fork of Cat-a-Lot working with the categories listed at Category:Images from the Geograph British Isles project needing categories by grid square, see these edits: [11], [12] and [13]. I'm not an expert at JS, so this is a barely functional hack and its farrr from ideal.

The behaviour is exactly right IMO, if you want to do that copy User:NilfaBot/monobook.js to User:ClemRutter/monobook.js or User:ClemRutter/vector.js. There are a few drawbacks though:

  1. The date is hard-coded in the JS, be better if it did it automatically.
  2. More important, it is not compatible with Cat-a-Lot. So you can't use that script when Cat-a-Lot is active in your gadgets, and vice versa.

I'd suggest you put the script on to whichever of vector and monobook you don't normally use. That way to enable it you swap to the other skin and disable Cat-a-Lot, and reverse to go back to normal. Doing it all on the same skin would be a pain. A second dedicated account would also work.--Nilfanion (talk) 10:02, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Not nude men?[edit]

Here and elsewhere, why are you removing these from Category:Nude men, but leaving them in Category:Nude women? Both the men & the women are naked and body-painted. - Jmabel ! talk 00:21, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

And this even more so. It's hard to imagine someone more clearly nude, or nude in a more public situation. - Jmabel ! talk 00:27, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

There seems to be a related conversation on the Commons:Help desk, I will be mentioning these there. - Jmabel ! talk 00:27, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

  • [comment moved from my talk page, let's keep the discussion in one place, please just use tb if you think I might have failed to notice a reply. - Jmabel ! talk] As far as I am aware- the cat was becoming bloated, and these images were already in subcats. Just a bit of tidying- not important to me, if you are looking after them. :) --ClemRutter (talk) 17:26, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
    • Seems to me that most of these did not have a relevant subcat. And it's a real pain going back & restoring categories, because there is, of course, nothing left on the file itself to indicate former categories. The only way to go at it is really to go via either my watchlist or your user contributions, so only someone aware of the history has any reasonable chance of making a correction. I also remove categories a lot, myself, when subcategories are present, but it needs to be done with a light hand. If categories are "bloated" it's OK to replace with more specific categories, but not to lose the information in the absence of more specific categories. - Jmabel ! talk

Nudist adolescent girls[edit]

Hi. This removing is not acceptable. Please don't do such modifications again. I remind you that : 1) Commons is not censored ; 2) Nudism is a subject of knowledge and deserves to be illustrated as any subject ; 3) for files showing people, there's a logic of category tree by gender and by age. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 08:00, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry but these images clearly show girls that are more than 12 yo and less than 18 yo (as specified here). I agree to say we cannot know their age for sure, but that's the most plausible guess. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 14:59, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
Would you really dare saying this girl with the cap (also seen here) is either 18yo (or older) or 12yo (or younger) ?! --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 15:48, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
Oh and by the way, why did you remove the category:Nude men on many files where we do see nude men ? Do you really want to be constructive for the project ? --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 16:23, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
You don't seem really aware of the rules and functioning of Commons (at least not everything).
this file, for instance, has no category that can be considered as a subcat of "nude men". Therefore either you keep the "nude men" cat or you add/create a relevant subcat. But it's not acceptable to say "there were far to many bicycles and body paint for me". It's not a valid argument. If you find tons of pictures of the Eiffel Tower in the main cat of the Eiffel Tower, you wouldn't remove the cat. That works the same here.
As for the FKK picture : well, I guess you're wrong because this girl is surely less than 20 ! In any case, on Commons, we judge on ages (at least on what we can guess), not from development stages... and Commons is not based in Germany BTW. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 17:56, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
"A lot has changed since 2004" > what do you mean by that ? --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 08:16, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
Work has been done on the formalisation of categories. Some times the scheme chosen defies logic, other times it is logical but wierd Canals in Cheshire but Rivers of Cheshire for example. Sometime a decision is changed- fine if you are studying that area but hard if you are just passing through. I have been passing through these images since November 2007, when I rewrote the Naturism article taking it from stub to a B, and doubled its length. I can understand why you are twitchy- there are a lot of censorship pressures- to resist, and due to Californian/Floridan/US?EU and local laws this category is almost impossible to populate. I am glad you are attempting to look after it- I have other interests but still keep uploading the occassional shot taken in FKK-Anlage (Naturist sites)- though usualy just cat- them geographically zB File:Cèze Génèse Jumping Rocks 5947.JPG. I do question the wisdom of WP of using the word Adolescent to describe teenagers as it has an entirely different meaning to the Red Top Tabloids (gutter press) and could generate unnecessary press attacks- but if the decision has passed the lawyers we stick with it. Best wishes --ClemRutter (talk) 09:19, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Textiel[edit]

Hallo,

One can unfold category trees by clicking on the plus signs in category displays. For a more complete overview, you can try this tool. For a good communication with people, you can probably better rely on your knowledge of English than to hope that google translate will do the work for you. --Foroa (talk) 07:21, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Commons:Sexual content[edit]

Hi Clem, I removed the use of the Fact template from the Commons:Sexual content proposal. I do not dispute your right to question the assumptions made in the proposal (though it might have been better to do so on the talk page), however templates with similar names on different wikis have different jobs and effects. Here Fact is not the same as en:Template:Fact at enwiki, rather on Commons it is used to tag files that have misleading names and descriptions, and sends such files to Category:Accuracy disputes, which is a file maintenance category which is not suitable for discussions.--KTo288 (talk) 12:33, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Clem. I'm not going to argue that one! I left the image from the bridge looking down the ship canal in Category:Manchester Ship Canal, but removed the one looking up the River Irwell. As you say it's a debatable point, but I'm happy either way. Skinsmoke (talk) 15:30, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Map tagging[edit]

Hi Clem,

You've been doing some fantastic work on the map tagging!

One little reminder though: when you have tagged some maps for a book, could you be sure to leave a template in the index, to link to them? There seem to be a couple of occasions where you've tagged several maps or plans, but then put "no maps" in the index.

The great thing, though, is all the tags you've been adding! Thank you so much, and please keep up the hard work -- we're definitely winning! Jheald (talk) 23:46, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

that makes more sense- but understood the bot cleaned that up. If you want to loose the will to live look at the geology section. Same map laden tomes repeated year after year after ..--ClemRutter (talk) 09:29, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
Agreed, the geology section can be a nightmare. I think I've fixed all the rest. There will eventually be a bot run to clear up inconsistencies, but not while people are still editing by hand. Thanks again for all your hard work and tagging! All best, Jheald (talk) 10:53, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

Feedback[edit]

The purpose of the British Library event was to launch this event and to gain so me experience of the possible problems- and hopefully to refine the system so it can be used again. Wikim(p)edia often makes the process overcomplex due to Wikimedians being so bloody clever- so what I would like to do is to simplify the system so a bright ten year old can do the task reliably- so here are a few thoughts:

1 Keyboard time

The only reason we need humans at all is their ability to recognise a map- but the pinch point is tagging the images, the physical process of moving the cursor accurately and pressing a button. A further obstacle is typing in no maps) and Has 20000 times.

    • Question- can't this all be done by a database query run by a bot?

If you require the human to confirm that he has visited all the images in a Flickr page- surely swiping away the would be sufficient to alert a bot that the page was completed- and it could decide whether the page was tagged or no maps) thus saving 60000 to 120000 key strokes and 20000 precision cursor movements. This also simplifies the Instructions that need to be taught to your humans.

2 Reducing complexity of the task

If you can reduce the complexity of the human instructions, you reduce error and open the task to wider range of participants (the smart ten year old).

    • Question- is there any reason why we can't write a third tag . that resolves to the text No maps). The instruction to participants then becomes
  • Select a section in this list and click edit
  • In the Preview you will see booktitles followed by the purple words- Untagged maps? - select one it will take you to a Flickr gallery- on each of the maps or ground plans you find tag (t) it with map (and the other words if needed). When finished, backarrow back.
  • In the editor change the to read or
  • Preview and save the page.
3 A further thought
  • Question :Does the human need to enter anything on the Wikipedia page. As they are mainly typing tmap on the Flickr page- would in not suffice to tag one image in that gallery with the tag BLWMOSM, and allow software to detect that and with it build the or templates onto the WM page.

4 Current instructions

Going back to the header instruction on the Editing Commons:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection/Synoptic index/England - Yorkshire- they are ambiguous in that item three, contains an if that may refer to two templates not one if it is read one way. I query the use of were and not are as a subjunctive is not applicable in a conditional. (Or am I confusing my English and German grammar?). I don't see that this duplex process actually reflects human practice- when both the map recognition and the Flickr tagging happen in a single process before anything is reported back to the WM page. (However it is the obvious way for software to proceed- and good practice.) If the duplex process is allowed to stand and my suggestion for a is adopted, then Instruction 2 becomes

5 Format of the index

In a long page like Commons:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection/Synoptic index/England - Yorkshire a lot of editor mouse-stokes could be saved if the general items that lie raw under main section ==Yorkshire== were placed in a sub-sub- section ====General==== like the the following items ====York====, so they could be seen in preview and editor at the same time. At the moment there is a six-page scroll.

Comments to my stalkers. This is an incredibly important and enjoyable task- and the British Library meetup was thought provoking and fun. A free images in Category:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection event 31 October 2014

--ClemRutter (talk) 20:29, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi Clem. First can I really thank you for the above -- it's incredibly useful (and so rare) to have such a detailed feedback, I can't thank you enough. That said, I shouldn't be the only one to see it and comment -- because I did so much of the original set up, I'm likely to be most blind and most resistant about its shortcomings. So people reading this, if Clem is right, please say so, to make sure I get the message.
So, to take your points:
(5) Yes. You're right. This is something I've become more aware of -- the index is much easier to edit, if it's broken up into chunks of about 10 to 15 items, with a separate edit button for each chunk. A separate subhead for "General" makes huge sense. The only downside now is it would be a lot of work to create now across all of the index pages, but feel very free to add such a subhead to a section you're working on, or to otherwise change the index in any other way you think would help.
(4) You're probably right. I'm not seeing the word "were" in the link you've posted, so I'm not 100% sure which part of which sentence you're referring to. As to the duplex process, the reason I suggested this was that I think it is useful particularly for large pages, and as the safest way to do it. For large pages, it means if one gets called away from the process at any time, one just needs to save the already-edited index page, and then it will accurately point to all the maps that have already been tagged. I also find that, particularly if I've got distracted and have started rotating a lot of non-map images, then having already edited the index page means I don't have to remember whether there were any maps or not. Finally, it's also kind of a tip, that becuase of the way Flickr's infinite scroll jumps about, for large pages (>100 images), it can be a good idea to scroll all the way down to the bottom first (keeping an eye to see whether there were any maps), and then slowly work back up the page, tagging everything that should be tagged.
I entirely agree that for pages with very few images, I will usually add once HasMaps at the end, when I remove UntaggedMaps. But this is a short-cut. If we're trying to keep the length of instructions down, but still give instructions that work well in the safest way and the most general case, I still think it's not a bad idea to encourage people to add HasMaps first, then tag, then remove UntaggedMaps.
However as noted above, I'm probably the person least likely to find fault in my own system, so please everybody pile in and tell me if Clem is right, and this is advice that ought to be changed. Jheald (talk) 23:45, 18 November 2014 (UTC) (more to follow)
(3) Getting a bot to fill in HasMaps or NoMaps. Yes, this could probably de done. But I'm quite new to writing bots (or at least ones that run continuously), so I was very happy to be writing a bot that only had to update one page -- the overall total status page. I would also be a little nervous of the edit conflicts that might ensue, if both the bot and a human were updating a section in the same period. There's something I think to be said for getting a human to make the decisive claim. But again, this may just be me having a blindspot to deficiencies in something that I made.
(2) I suppose psychologically I was resistant to requiring people to enter an 8-digit system number as a template field, when for the purposes of the output that system number would then be entirely ignored. But if others feel that such a template would streamline the process, by requiring less editing from the initial UntaggedMaps template, then I would be very happy for such a template to be created.
(1) I suppose that what you say is right. But I was nervous that too many people might remove the UntaggedMaps template before all the maps had been tagged, so I wanted people to positively make the declaration that the book really did have no maps; or did indeed have maps.
Clem, these are really good points. Even if I've initially been resistant, let's see what people like User:Mauricen53 think. If he (and other people who've done a lot of tagging) agree with you, then it shouldn't be too hard to see what we can do.
Thank you again for this really thorough set of thoughts. All best, Jheald (talk) 00:10, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

No revenge[edit]

  • Hi, this is not revenge nomination. Please, see Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Vikiçizer. I'm still sad for toy files, they're gonna be deleted. My files about toy pianos deleted like yours. And they said "Please do start a deletion request for any files or categories you think are copyright violations. If you want I can show you some easy ways to start a DR" and i'm doing what i believed. We're gonna see the results about nominations. thanks...Vikiçizer (talk) 16:18, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
