Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Old North Map[edit]

Hi,

I'm currently translating maps for the Breton wikipedia, especially everyting that concerns the Dark Ages of Britain and the Old North, and I would like to know if it would be possible to have a version of this map with the territories but without the names, in order to translate it. If you don't have any blank version, or if you prefer not to let this work be translated, I'll understand.

If it works for you, I'll let you the credit of this work as it is possible on commons, I'll register it as a derivated work.

Map of Northumbria for History of Edinburgh page[edit]

Hello Finn. I recently created a "History of Edinburgh" page on Wikipedia, which focused mainly on the history of the town since its founding in the 12thC. Another editor has expanded my short preamble into a lengthier explanation of the period of Northumbrian rule. If you go to the page, you'll see that it currently has a blank map of Northumbria, which I would like to replace with one showing the names 'Edinburgh', 'Lothian' and 'Bernicia'. A crop of your map would be ideal for this purpose. I've taken the liberty of experimenting with your map and have made a cropped version with the names west of the frontier with Strathclyde removed (as they don't feature in the text). Would you mind me posting this on the page? I'm not quite sure how I would fill in the credit information. I could state that it is an amended version of your map, or you could change the details to show your own credit after I've posted it. I'd like to show you the section of the map I want to use, but for that I'd need your email address. Either that, or if you have a Wikipedia User Talkpage (I haven't found one under your normal name), send me details of that and I'll post a message with the amended image to it.
