Hello, Sims2aholic8!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Shiri_Maimon_-_Israel_2005.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Abzeronow (talk) 17:04, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Eurovision 2024 Semifinal Map change.[edit]

Hello,

I don't use these talk features on Wikipedia often but I wanted to know why you changed the semifinal map colors on the Eurovision 2024 page. I noticed that the participation maps have also been updated recently to blue and grey instead of the green and yellow. Is it an order from Wikipedia to update the colors every few years, or are people just bored and want to change them? (Personally, I prefer the older colors.)

@StudiedPort5: You can see the full discussion of the reasoning behind the change of colours en:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#Colors on the map and en:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#New semi allocation maps. There were quite a few points raised in these discussions, but in summary I suppose the main point that came up in the discussion for changing the colour scheme of the main participation maps is that green and red are colours which can prove difficult for those with colour-blindness to differentiate. Changing to blue and red, and blue and green before the contest itself, makes it a lot easier for everyone to understand the state of play at a glance. On top of this there were some additional queries around making a distinction between the finalists and semi-finalists before the contest final, and also making the colour scheme more subdued and less straining on the eyes. A separate conversation then came up about changing the semi allocation maps because the new colour scheme for the participating countries was now very similar to the original scheme for these maps, so a new scheme here as well also made a lot of sense. Hopefully this answers your question, it certainly had nothing to do with "being bored". Sims2aholic8 (talk) 16:32, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand now, thank you for taking the time to respond. Since I got into Eurovision 5 years ago, I've been messing around by making my own maps with those color schemes, so it was a little surprising seeing them change after so long. While i'm here though, I always wondered how people updated those maps on the pages. I know the maps are based on MapChart, but how exactly are they updated on Wikipedia? StudiedPort5 (talk) 17:29, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem at all! I've not constructed any of the maps from scratch, I don't have that technical knowledge required. We have some template files (File:Eurovision events Map 2.svg) which are tweaked as is necessary to match border changes over time. Sims2aholic8 (talk) 21:40, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
