Logos

Pray answer why you upload logotypes to Commons? They will probably be deleted? Thuresson 04:51, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I get the wikis all mixed up. Sorry. :\ --Tomf688 04:55, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

Image sorting

Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries), or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb 00:51, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I occasionally create pages for my images, but I always categorize them with their copyright tags. --Tomf688 01:18, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Copyright tags aren't enough. Images need subject categories (see Commons:Categories). Dbenbenn 21:01, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

By the way, please use PNG instead of GIF. Dbenbenn 21:01, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Categories, sources

I see you've been adding subject categories; thanks! In addition, could you please provide your source (a URL) when you upload a picture from another web site? For example, a link at Image:Dutch Ruppersberger.jpg would be useful simply to verify who it is, or to find out more about the photo. Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 02:20, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

That particular one seems to be unfree on further inspection. Thought I was looking at his official website, but it was his re-election committee's website. --Tomf688 02:45, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi, do you have a Library of Congress source for this photo? Thuresson 23:15, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

Image:The Earth seen from Apollo 17.jpg

Could you indicate at Image:The Earth seen from Apollo 17.jpg where you got your larger version of that picture? Thanks, User:dbenbenn 21:34, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Image deletion notification Image:John Warner on Meet the Press.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Okay I did it for the latest image of Isaac. I did not use commas or colons in the file name because Firefox does not like that. Good kitty 17:37, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments in Lar's recent RfA!

Dear Lar: I would like to thank you for your support in my recent RfA which passed 20 to 1. I really appreciate the trust you've placed in me. Please help me be a better admin by giving me feedback when you think I need it, and praise when you think I've earned it. Early supports like yours were particularly helpful in letting me know I wasn't crazy for wanting to get involved. Your work on images and templates is something I hope to learn from. All the best. ++Lar: t/c 03:25, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
I chose LEGO to illustrate my thank you messagess, because LEGO is a system that we build things with. Commons holds the building blocks that other wikis use to make great things. Without Commons images and media, other wikis would be much poorer. Let's help build the greatest freely available intellectual collection the world has ever known... together.

Congratulations, an image you uploaded, Image:Hurricane Katrina August 28 2005 NASA.jpg, hasbeen nominated over at Wikipedia:Featured Picture Candidates. You can come and participate in the discussion and vote on it here. NauticaShades 20:26, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

I think the clouds in the new version are saturated with too much blue, especially towards the center of the photo. Wouldn't it be better to upload this into a new image file, especially because it looks so different from the one that was voted up as FP? Good kitty 02:12, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi, are you certain that modification (derivative works) and commercial use is permitted for the G8 photos? Thanks Arniep 01:48, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi- I wonder whether we better delete the image until you get a reply? Arniep 17:55, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Images from such occasions often have a condition that the image is not allowed to be modified or have derivative works made (as in the case of most British government images) in which case we may have already broken the usage conditions. Arniep 22:59, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

propaganda fake

Hi, i've corrected the summary about your Image:Frenchman weeps as Germans enter Paris, June 14, 1940.JPEG

File:Frenchman weeps as the French troops leave Toulon, June 1940.JPEG

picture. this is not paris but toulon, this is not june 14 1940 but somewhere circa 1940, and the portrayed people are not waving nor crying at the germans entering france -as suggests the post-2003 US francophobe cliché- but at the french troops leaving france. these troops were pushed in the south by the german blitzkrieg and they gathered in the french colonies where they will be organized as Free French Forces by a guy you may have heard of called General de Gaulle. the truth is this picture is a screenshot from the 1943 propaganda film directed by Franck Capra for the US army, its called Divide and Conquer, the 3rd film in the Why We Fight series. you might be interested to watch this picture moving in the actual source (http://www.archive.org/details/DivideAndConquer). a nice thing would be to rename your picture as it is currently mislabeled. proposed title is available in the image's page. for your information i would suggest this article by one of your fellow citizen who has its article in wikipedia. Tom/Archive1, congratulations! You now have the the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other SYSOPS, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

kind request

Hi Tom,

I noticed that you tagged Image:Ruth Ginsburg.jpg for deletion. However, it seems that you did not inform its uploader, user:FoekeNoppert, of this action.
Our Commons:Deletion guidelines say this should be done, and I would kindly encourage you to play by this rule. People get understandably angry when their contributions are deleted and no-one tells them about it.

regards,

Thanks for uploading Image:US Government most-wanted Iraqi playing cards.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Did U.S. News and World Report release this photo into the public domain or did they not renew the copyrights? If so, you can probably use {{PD-US}} or create a new template saying that since U.S. News and World Report didn't renew their copyrights in the 60's their work is in the public domain and use this link as a source. I'm sorry, I cannot elaborate further than what I said. OTRS sometimes requires sensitive handling of duties. Your best action is to contact someone else who has access to OTRS and ask them to review the case and see if they agree with my course of action. They also won't be able to give any information, but hopefully their confirmation of my actions as correct will satisfy you that the image really did need to go. You can learn more about OTRS and see people to contact at Commons:OTRS. Thank you for your understanding. MECUtalk 18:22, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

SN 2006gy

Hi Tom

You deleted: "Image:SN 2006gy, NASA illustration.jpg" (noncommercial and educational use only: http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/image_use.html)

If NASA published it, what does it have to do with the Harvard website. And how the heck was I supposed to know? How can I tell what random Universtiy wants to sink their hooks into an image? I mean Berkeley was the only University that NASA mentioned on the page with the image. And isn't Wikimedia Commons non-commercial? --SVTCobra 20:33, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Sorry to be in this mess over these images, but I tagged a bunch of images from the supernova non-commercial as that is what they appear to be. - Image:Sn2006gy collapse ill.jpg, Image:Sn2006gy CHANDRA x-ray.jpg and Image:SN 2006gy, NASA illustration.jpg. Bawolff 23:22, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Could you please undelete this image. You deleted for non commercial licensiing but it is a NASA pic from http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/chandra/multimedia/photos07-052.html i believe. Thanks N:User:Markie

This is NASA image, and the credit clearly states from NASA also. DragonFire1024 21:14, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
Regarding all future replies: these are not PD images. The original source is here and they only permit noncommercial and educational usages per this notice. --Tom (talk - email) 21:20, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
Clearly the credit states: Image credit: Illustration: NASA/CXC/M.Weiss; X-ray: NASA/CXC/UC Berkeley/N.Smith et al.; IR: Lick/UC Berkeley/J.Bloom & C.Hansen. Notice NASA in there? The illustration, the top image, is by NASA as the credit clearly states. DragonFire1024 21:29, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
Not to mention the copyright of the site in general: Operated for NASA by SAO. This site was developed with funding from NASA under Contract NAS8-39073. From the bottom of this page. DragonFire1024 21:33, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
Apparently you failed to read the above link: ''Operated for NASA by SAO. This site was developed with funding from NASA under Contract NAS8-39073. If they are funded by NASA, then they do NOT exist without them. DragonFire1024 21:55, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
