Pay attention to copyright
Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content.

We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules.

In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files.

Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions.

Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

File:Florian Thiery 2017.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello there. I'm trying to clean-up the Category:Numismatics, and am left with this one file which I can't make heads or tails of. Other than the word "numismatics", I can't see what the connection to the subject is. The image is a classic Venn diagram, with "Vagueness & Uncertainty", "Numismatics" and "Ceramics", with an intersection of "Challenges". At first glance, this appears to be total nonsense. I can't make out what point you may be trying to present, here. As far as I know, it could be a diagram of "Helicopters", "Aardvarks" and "Zucchinis", with an intersection of "Hockey pucks". Perhaps you may have meant another term other than numismatics?? I just can't see how to classify this item, as I simply can't see the connection to the subject. PoundTales (talk) 23:17, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The img is part of a talk on "How to handle vagueness and uncertainty in graph-based LOD knowledge modelling. Dealing with archaeological numismatic and ceramological real world data" by Florian Thiery M.Sc., Dr. Allard W. Mees, Dr. Karsten Tolle, Dr. David G. Wigg-Wolf (https://graphentechnologien.hypotheses.org/files/2022/01/How_to_handle_vagueness_and_uncertainty_in_graph_etc-Florian_Mees_Tolle_Wolf.pdf). If you think it is not a part of the Numismatics Category, I will delete the connection. Fthierygeo (talk) 08:33, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for the link to the paper. That does clarify a lot. I can see why it was so challenging to model these concepts in a Venn diagram. The fundamental problem, here, is that you're trying to model a three dimensional construct in two dimensions. That, alone, is a major challenge. The main subject of the paper is "Linked Open Data". That should be the central set of the diagram. "Vagueness & Uncertainty" is above it, and the intersection of the two is "Challenges". That is the main theme of the paper ... the challenge of modeling vague and uncertain data within the LOD framework. To either side of the central sets, there are "Numismatics" and "Ceramics". These two sets do not intersect each other. They do intersect LOD and "Vagueness & Uncertainty", and each have a small share in the intersection of "Challenges". This, I believe, is what you were attempting to model.
A complicating factor is an element that belongs in a third dimension, "Archaeology". Let us take the model I've described above, and taking "Vagueness & Uncertainty" as the "top" of the diagram, rotate it to a top down view (looking at it from above). "Vagueness & Uncertainty" is now the central set, and "Numismatics" and "Ceramics" form two of three legs of a tripod, if you will, supporting the "Vagueness & Uncertainty" set in the air, with the LOD set below it and hidden from view. "Archaeology" is the third leg of the tripod. There is a substantial intersection between "Archaeology" and "Numismatics" and between "Archaeology" and "Ceramics", but there is no intersection between "Numismatics" and "Ceramics". If we were to rotate our model back to our original view, we would find "Archaeology" behind "Numismatics" and "Ceramics" (and behind "Linked Open Data", as well).
There may have been a false sense of connection between "Numismatics" and "Ceramics" due to the specific subarea of "Ceramics" that is discussed in the paper, namely "Potters' stamps". If we go back to our top-down view of "Archaeology", "Numismatics" and "Ceramics" and remove "Vagueness & Uncertainty" and LOD, we can add "Potters' stamps" as a subset of "Ceramics" existing on the edge of "Archaeology", just inside of it. We can also add "Potters' stamp punches" also on the edge, but just outside of "Archaeology". (The original punches that made the stamps are seldom found in the archaeological record.) Likewise, we can add "Coin dies" in a similar position within "Numismatics", outside of "Archaeology". (These, too, seldom escape intentional destruction at the end of a monarch's reign.) We can then encompass "Potters' stamp punches" and "Coin dies" with another set, "Metal punches". This set may have a small overlap with "Archaeology", but the intersection of "Archaeology" with "Potters' stamp punches" and with "Coin dies" is slight, at best, if not totally nonexistent.
Another point of confusion comes from the main theme of the paper. The paper does not discuss "Numismatics" and "Ceramics" per se, but rather uses subareas of these fields to illustrate the search for commonalities which may help shed light on the "Challenges" of modeling "Vagueness & Uncertainty" in LOD implementations. It is because "Numismatics" and "Ceramics" are unrelated that any commonalities they may seem to share would, in fact, shed light on the "Challenges" you're trying to address. That is, the commonalities would not be unique to their fields, but would be the common challenges that you are looking for.
I must admit that while I am a technical person, I'm certainly not well-read on LOD modelling, and some of the denser technical discussions in the paper did escape me. I do think I've caught the main themes well enough, though, to model them more accurately in terms of three dimensional Venn diagrams. You're welcome to clarify any misunderstandings I may have. I tried to describe my view of the relationships as best I can without actually drawing my own diagrams. If I've been unclear in any way, don't hesitate to ask.
As far as the relationship of this paper, in Wikipedia terms, to the categories Numismatics and Ceramics, it is minimal, at best. It certainly does relate to Linked Open Data, which is the main subject. I see the connections as similar to a paper on the treatment of gunshot wounds in a hospital emergency room. There may be an incidental connection to gun smithing and ballistics, but the main subject is clearly emergency medicine. That paper would be published in a medical journal, but not in a journal on ballistics, for example. Likewise, this paper certainly belongs in a journal on data modeling, but would not appear in a numismatic or ceramic journal.
Where I do see future potential is if we can get enough material to support a "Numismatic online databases" category, of which, the particular database mentioned, "nomisma.org" would be a subcategory. Likewise, if there is a "Ceramic online databases" category, with a "Samian Research" subcategory, the paper would fall in the scope of both of those subcategories, but not in the top-level categories.
Personally, I see the category structure here on Wikimedia Commons as another exercise in data modeling, but that is material for another conversation. I would like to take a moment, though, to caution you on the use of corporate logos in files posted to Wikimedia Commons. Copyright is a matter of great sensitivity, here, particularly due to the international scope and licensing details of Commons. This is quite different from the various language Wikipedia projects, where Fair Use provisions of some country's copyright laws can be argued and supported. On Commons, the international scope makes Fair Use impossible. If you personally do not own the copyrights to the corporate logos, you cannot claim them as your own work, nor can you argue Fair Use of the logos, as you could on English Wikipedia. For that reason, I advise you to drop the logos, or if you wish to study up on the licensing details, consider posting it on an appropriate Wikipedia, instead. The official policy for Wikimedia Commons on this issue may be found at Commons:Fair use.
I hope these comments are helpful. I mean them all in a spirit of constructive criticism. I'd be happy to review future versions of this file, and clarify any points that I may not have explained quite as well as I intended. We all make mistakes and I'm certainly no exception. Having had some of mine rather rudely pointed out to me, I hope not to do the same with others. I was genuinely confounded by the original diagram and just couldn't find any meaning to it. Thanks again for referring me to the paper, it certainly helped, and I hope my comments are helpful to you, in return. PoundTales (talk) 07:23, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
