You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Hello, TGCP!

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Copyright violations[edit]

Hello TGCP.

Please assume good faith. I try to be BOLD, and I have uploaded many files which are perfectly good, as you can see from my Special:Contributions/TGCP contributions list. There seems to be only four instances in four years where I have misunderstood the rather lengthy and complicated licensing rules :

April 2010 from a NASA paper so I thought that was ok, but which indeed had a copyright notice,
December 2013 regarding Danish coins (website confusingly says "there are no special guidelines for reproduction of coins" )
January 2014 Maersk Lego box - probably easier than the others to check, as Toys have their own category, so I guess fair warning on that one.
Spring 2014 where I think I uploaded images from a Korean paper with a non-commercial CC3 license, but also a copyright. I can find no records of those images - erasing history is not fruitful for adding content. After some detective work, it seems Wikipedia:Copyright_FAQ#Non-commercial_licenses is the reason for deletion (?) - that is not easy to figure out, and I expect some leniency from others in these cases, particularly when no reason is given.

Those few instances over such a long time are hardly reason for such strong words. Overall, I find your action hasty, unbalanced and without proper justification. Please explain your warning. TGCP (talk) 19:34, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello TGCP,

I apologize for hurting your feelings. I should have added that I have absolutely no doubt about your good faith, and that your other contributions (which I did check out before posting) are very welcome. I should also not have expedited the deletion process (1, 2) without talking it through first.

I need to point out however that Wikimedia Commons is not Wikipedia and that although the spirit and contributors are the same, there remains important differences. Specifically, WP:BOLD really does not work here. Files are rarely overwritten or deleted, and certainly, great preliminary care must always be applied when it comes to licensing. This is for two reasons:

Files are re-used elsewhere, and not just in Wikipedia. Any copyright violation that we generate "spreads over" to re-users. Specifically here I was just about to reuse your -excellent- helicopter drag curve uploads at work and take part myself in copyvio before I noticed the mis-licensing.
Copyvio is very expensive here at Commons (ok, admittedly in part because of our own burned infrastructure). All the investigation, signaling, discussion, explanation involved takes lots of time away from contributors who would rather spend it curating our wonderful treasure.

(I don’t want to sound condescending here -- my first upload was a copyvio...)

So all in all, let me turn my too-stern warning into a plead; one to please, please please double, triple, quadruple check the copyright and licensing status of every one of your uploads. By doing so, you not only will save considerable volunteer time and energy down the line, but more importantly, you help make Commons a trusted media repository where re-users can pick-and-choose without having to perform background checks.

Thank you for a balanced and considerate response, despite my lack of afterthought. I get the message - transgression of WM rules is serious, and I will be more careful next time.

Had you just issued the same warning as before, I would probably make a similar mistake next time. So your increased warning was unfortunately nescessary for my learning.

A different editor rightfully deleted my uploads. What frustrated me is that I could not find a way to see the reason; the system should provide better feedback options.

Even this deletion log and the Upload and Creation log does not show anything.

Also I have 'not' become more confident in understanding the rules; there are so many exceptions that it takes an awful long time to investigate all conditions before upload.

I have suggested expanding the diagram on the WP FAQ.

Example of doubt : I wanted to upload a section from this page http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=82844 but their rules are not stated on the page, and the file is protected from saving parts. Having been burned by previous NASA files, I backed off.

I agree that time consumption is critical, which is why I am frustrated with the current hoop jumping during uploads.

I completely understand. I agree with you that the Wikimedia Commons project is doing a poor job at communicating and reaching out. A great part of this is the underlying technology: wiki-based-everything, in my view, is a bad choice for our mission. We also have a consensus-based decision process, which while it produces terrific results for writing articles at Wikipedia, is preventing us from growing into a sound, coherent and efficient structure. And so, we have a messy environment to welcome new users. We have a hundred different licensing schemes and a bazillion different-looking description pages. We can’t build a SFW/NSFW wall to enable corporate or academic in-situ usage. We have photographers exploiting loopholes in licenses for personal profit. We can’t grow non-English contributions past the anecdotal stage.

When I get discouraged I look at the stream of incoming photos in the aviation sub-categories. I look back and I see that just two years ago I was unable to find a decent in-flight photo of an airliner, or of a landing gear, or a Schlieren photograph. And that gets me a little pride back and I go back to uploading my work and sorting out the existing body. We have a treasure here. I try to simply look past the seemingly unsolvable project flaws and contemplate the incredible resource that we provide the world.

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.
