User:DoSia deletion of the user page[edit]

Hi, Could you explain which exactly rule of Commons my user page was violating? I just wanted to intruduce myself, but you deleted my user page claiming that it violates some uknown for me rules. Anyway, thank you for your "warm" welcome on Commons... DoSia (talk) 12:59, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

But it is rather normal, that the user intruduce himself/herself first, and then upload pictures. I'm still waiting from you to show me an exact rule which says that users are not allowed to link to his/her facebook page on his/her own userpage here. Thank you. DoSia (talk) 13:05, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You still did not point to the exact rule which says what you are claiming it is not allowed here. I simply first created my user-page to introduce myself and then started preparing pictures to upload with help of my father. The upload is actually in progress.. You deleted my user page just after several minutes I have created it without clear, personal explanation why you did it. Would not be better to give me a chance before doing such aggressive and discouraging action as deleting my user page? Without my father help I would probably resign from doing here anything after such an "worm" welcome. How many other users have you already discouraged in that way? Your user-page contains links to your private page on flickr and blog and it is OK, but not OK for me to link to my personal page on facebook, why? Again - please provide a link to the rule which give you a right for such an action... DoSia (talk) 14:03, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
While I am not Herby's spokesman, being an uninvolved administrator I'll give you an independent opinion. At the time of deletion of your userpage, you had no uploads, but a user page containing 2 Facebook links. This was clearly indicating to someone (ab)using Commons' webspace for promotional purposes (which does not require being also commercially). Each day scores of people do exactly this. And each day we admins do exactly what Herby has done with your userpage. Almost all new contributors to Commons first upload some files and at a later point of time think of writing something on their userpage. You seem to be the unexpected and rare exception of that rule. --Túrelio (talk) 19:37, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What else do you suggest to be done in response to socking and block evasion?[edit]

  1. What else do you suggest to be done in response to socking and block evasion?
  2. Do you think absolutely nothing should be done?
  3. Should we thank the sockmaster for performing socking and block evasion — by enabling the sockmaster and his socks?
  4. Should we not even bother to check if there is any collateral damage by a CU check with the checkuser tool, and just assume this?
  5. Should an investigation be started at Commons:Requests for checkuser? Would this investigation request result in any Checkuser actions being taken?
  6. Should we change Commons:Blocking policy to explicitly state that it is perfectly okay for a blocked user to perform block evasion via sockpuppetting?

I respect your opinion and value your input and would appreciate answers to these questions, below.

Thank you for your time, -- Cirt (talk) 15:59, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll respond on the admin board thanks --Herby talk thyme 16:38, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple numbers of the socks are NOT dynamic[edit]

  • Herbythyme, multiple numbers of the socks are NOT dynamic.
  • Multiple numbers of the socks exhibit a pattern of having been blocked, then once the block expires, they go right back to being used for block evasion by the sockmaster.

Here are a few examples:

  1. 90.184.205.91 (talk · contribs) = was blocked one week, that short block did NOT deter block evasion, came back to socking and block evasion after block expired.
  2. 83.254.247.75 (talk · contribs) = was blocked one week, that short block did NOT deter block evasion, came back to socking and block evasion after block expired.
  3. 194.47.95.146 (talk · contribs) = used by same sockmaster since December 2009.

Hi,

I notice that you left a warning for the above user. I don't know how many images were left by the time you got there, as they all seem to have been removed very quickly, but this user had seven or eight images and all were very blatant spam in bad faith?

Is there any way a non-admin like me can tag such accounts as apparent spam-only for future admin attention and possible blocking? Or is it likely that the administrator deleting one "speedy" spam image will notice that this isn't a one-off and take action anyway? (I notice that it was you that seemed to have deleted them all).

Thanks for the help either way!

Ubcule (talk) 17:30, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Such good questions :)
You tagged a few - I picked up on two you hadn't and deleted them.
Best approach - tag with speedy and inform the user. The "no adverts" template is a good one for that sort of obvious spam. You can always post on an admin board to get attention - some folk may question it but it is fine with me. If you find anything that worries you and can see I am around (via activity maybe) feel free to drop a note on here.
As to whether other admins will notice more spam - difficult to answer. I will look if I have time and others may do the same (or not). Thanks for the help :) --Herby talk thyme 17:34, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Plus - it ain't all spam. Personal images are allowed - look at the text/context before deciding. Equally text logos are probably not speedy - again what does it say, is it used on an en article (or other language) etc etc. You may wish to revert yourself on one or two! --Herby talk thyme 17:37, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback.
Yes, I do appreciate that personal images are permitted if they're in reasonable use as part of a user page or userspace content. I've not (intentionally) tagged any that I am aware are in use in that way- I normally check the file usage at the bottom of its page. (BTW, which is the most appropriate "topmost level" category to move obvious userspace images into if they're not already categorised?)
I would assume that if a "personal" image has been uploaded more than a month ago and still hasn't been used in that manner, then it's appropriate to tag it for speedy deletion(?)
I'm also aware that non-copyrightable text logos (plus "simple shapes" et al) are permitted here, and if in doubt normally check what it's meant to represent before deciding if it should be tagged.
You mentioned that "you may wish to revert yourself on one or two"- are there any that you had in mind?
Finally, as I'm not an admin myself, when I tag something, I assume that's all it is- an advice tag for an admin. Since they're the ones with the power, I assume they'll double-check and follow or reject it as they feel appropriate. Perhaps this is wrong? If you think I've been too slapdash in any particular case though, please let me know. Thanks!
Thank you also for the rollback privilege, BTW, I'll take a look into that. All the best, Ubcule (talk) 18:53, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies - short of time.
Looks to me as though other admins have deleted ones I might not have done I guess but it happens :) so forget the reverts.
Personal images I'm more relaxed about than some other admins (& my approach to spam is 100% intolerance). An odd image doesn't seem like the end of the world to me maybe.
I sincerely hope all admins will take care to review deletion requests - that said as time goes by the nose for such things improves (I hope). Cheers --Herby talk thyme 11:40, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for the feedback- I'll probably err a bit more on the side of caution in the future.
My main concern is with Commons getting diluted with self-indulgent, low-quality material that has no plausible reuse potential or interest to anyone beyond the uploader. Ditto copyvios (perhaps even moreso) which dilutes Commons' reliability and usefulness.
I guess the problem with unused personal stuff is determining whether it's self-expression or self-promotion (the latter obviously a form of spam(!)). Anyway, once again, thank you for your feedback! Ubcule (talk) 19:33, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lovefoodies[edit]

Hi Herbythyme, Thanks for your advice about posting on discussions/talk pages. I'm very new to using WikiCommons, and I'm struggling a bit to be honest, with getting around the pages and 'the correct way' of doing things! I will re read the help stuff again and see if I can get it right next time. I didn't realise it was not right to put your URL of where you have placed someones photo. In innocence, I placed the link there so they could go check I used their photo correctly, and also attributed the image in their name. Oh well! I thought I was doing the right thing. Can you suggest another way to let the owner of the photos know where I have placed their photo (or don't they mind where?), and also so I can at least thank them for sharing the photo? I really don't like the idea of just taking a photo from someone without even a 'thanks' somewhere!!! Or would that be ok in the 'talk' section, but just without a link to where I used it? Sorry if I've offended anyone! Nothing meant badly!!! Thanks all for your patience, Mary, Lovefoodies — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lovefoodies (talk • contribs)

Just looking for a 'reply' button or something to your last message....hmmmmmmm anyway, no worries, I will NOT be posting anywhere near 600 links on the site. My goodness! It takes me about 1 hour each time I would like to use a photo, to check if it's the right one, read about it, download it and then write a message the author to let them know. Hopefully the more used to this site I get, the better I will be with the etiquette and speed too :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lovefoodies (talk • contribs)

Sorting for Devonport Leat[edit]

Hi,

Wanted to bounce an idea off you with regards to Category:Devonport Leat (and other similar categories): Using sort keys to arrange the category in distance-order, so File:Devonport leat take off 1.JPG would be listed first, and any in Plymouth last, with a logical progression down the leat.

It will be a tricky to work out properly, as for each image I will need to measure the distance from the head, along the leat. That said, my GIS skills should be up to that... But it will take a fair bit of time, do you think it will be worthwhile?--Nilfanion (talk) 11:37, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think I'll have a try at that at some point, though like you say, it will be a ton of work.
With regards to the leat merger - that proposal is a tad overzealous. There are a lot of mixed terms, so I wouldn't mind someone tidying it up a bit. But merging it all to aqueduct is silly.--Nilfanion (talk) 14:54, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've traced the leat from the East Dart to the edge of the city (38 km). I'd love to plot the full length (as then I can produce a map for the WP article) but that need real research. Its possible, as I've managed to follow Devonport Leat to Devonport, Plymouth Leat to Mutley and also found Stonehouse Leat...
I have the entire moorland stretch, so I can work on that sorting project.--Nilfanion (talk) 23:25, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And its done - let me know what you think? :)--Nilfanion (talk) 14:10, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'll add a quick note to the cat description. The sorting wasn't bad (thanks to GIS), but maintaining it properly will be somewhat tedious. One side benefit is unsorted files will likely be dumped at the end of the cat. I'll probably do the same with Plymouth Leat and other similar features at some point.--Nilfanion (talk) 16:18, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Please consider[edit]

Hi Herby,
thanks for the message; I don't think that people should be allowed to strike negative comments about them anywhere, not just on their talk pages, but as my time is very limited these days, I am not going to interfere more with Malcolm's talk page any more. I only noticed his removing that comment because I have that page on my watchlist to see if there any updates regarding his unblock request.

However, as for the time of the block, I think that it is pretty well-deserved; Malcolm was blocked a few times for a week, and it didn't bring any good to his behaviour, so I think that a longer break should be just enough for him to consider his attitude towards other users on Commons, especially with regards to calling other fascists or antisemites. odder (talk) 21:51, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am not aware of any policies that regulate these matters, at least on Commons. However, from my on-wiki experience I can tell that removing negative comments about yourself is not a good sign—and I see that other administrators share similar views. odder (talk) 09:43, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Herbythyme's revert of 76.21.4.232's removal of the deletion-tag from the image page was fully in accordance with our policy. The DR might be bogus, nevertheless it needs correct processing. --Túrelio (talk) 21:57, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cross-wiki socks[edit]

Hi Herby. Can you take a look at User talk:KosovaSuperstars? I referred to User:RealMadridCF2012 in blocking this sock, but I forgot to mention the cross-wiki detail. Should User:RealMadridCF2012 be blocked here? I noticed you've blocked this sock of the user as well. Should a category for these socks be started here? Thanks for your time. Sock problem[edit]

Hi Herby. Can you please take a look at User talk:INeverCry#Delete the files of Gastombino1921? I already blocked User:Damian Carp Romero indef as a sock of User:Damian Romero who I blocked for a week. This new account User:Gastombino1921 has uploaded the same kind of football images, but I'm not sure if I should just block the acct as a sock, and what I should do regarding the main acct? User name issues[edit]

Hello, you blocked user "Quelle & Meyer Verlag GmbH & Co.". I now seem to stand in front of a Gordian knot: I am representative and acting on behalf of this company. Earlier, I had uploaded some picture files via my private account. Soon there arose problems since it wasn't me who holds the rights but the company. So I installed a second account with the company's name. This was blocked by you immediately. I am puzzled about what to do now. Block of Carliitaeliza[edit]

Hi Herby, I noticed you blocked User:Carliitaeliza as abusing multiple accounts, but didn't present any evidence of this. You should be aware that we don't block users on Commons just because they're blocked on other wikis like Spanish Wikipedia. Can you explain this action? Thank you. Dcoetzee (talk) 23:45, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Involved as far as I can see with this case along with a number of other accounts. I rarely block users simply because they are blocked elsewhere. If I do it will be because of genuinely disruptive behaviour (for example there is a puppeteers who regularly creates accounts on Commons to disrupt ja.wp and I regularly block them and the underlying IPs). --Herby talk thyme 08:34, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My User Page[edit]

Why did you delete my user page? --Mox La Push (talk) 05:34, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I put that link on my user page as a "project-related bookmark ... [or] other working material." Specifically, I put it there to make it easier for me to follow the disposition of a copyright lawsuit with implications for the Wikimedia Commons that I discussed at the village pump. If you had looked at the page linked to or my contributions at the village pump you might possibly have figured that out. Alternatively, you could have simply asked before so quickly and aggressively policing user space. In any case, that single link was not non-allowable content. Kindly restore the page and please chill out a little. --Mox La Push (talk) 06:07, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GhiathArodaki[edit]

I noticed that you recently blocked User:178.61.35.103 for one day for vandalism. Note that this IP is almost certainly User:GhiathArodaki evading his week-long block; you may want to extend the block on the IP to match the duration of User:GhiathArodaki's block. See en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/GhiathArodaki for further evidence linking the two accounts. —Psychonaut (talk) 16:32, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes fair;y well aware of who it was given the edits however the IP may well be dynamic. For someone who has the longest list of blocks on Commons (AFAIK) I still tend to block softly to start with. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 17:04, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK - upload by a puppet account user who - between the accounts - have uploaded a number of similar copyvios. Add in the fact that it looks far more like a pro image that I just haven't tracked down the real source of yet and the precautionary principle applies for now at least. --Herby talk thyme 18:21, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I did a little investigating and found out that the picture was taken by a photographer named Vivien Killilea at Niveas Grammy party back in 2011... So I guess it was uploaded without permission.. Apologies but an IP edit with the summary "test" is quite typical of the current levels of vandalism. Had you been logged in I assure you I would not have reverted it. --Herby talk thyme 07:43, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
IP = vandal? Bad style. Please look at the content of an edit. This was no vandalism. --TMg 13:12, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nope that is not what I said. I said that the combination of the edit summary and the fact that it was from an IP is very characteristic of sum Xrumer bot behaviours. I also apologised and I am genuinely sorry about it. --Herby talk thyme 13:25, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You say you did not looked at the content of the edit? Is this how vandal fighting works? IP + short summary = revert? What do you think is the intention of a spam bot that adds a test template transclusion to a template talk page? It's not that I have a problem with vandal fighting. This is a very important job. Please delete more images (yes, I'm serious, there are way to much out-of-scope images at commons). But we (= all MediaWiki projects) have a major problem with new users giving up because their first edits "disapear" and they don't understand why. Please be careful. Thanks. --TMg 14:17, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, sorry, nevermind. When I tried to use the Flickr upload bot, I was told you had deleted the image before I had a chance to edit it (within seconds)... but the logs don't show that you deleted any images today at all. I think what happened is, you had previously deleted an image with the name I was trying to use, and the bot got confused. I apologize. Have a great day! – Quadell (talk) 17:12, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have tightened the filter to less edits, and removed a bit of text. There is still only the one false positive, I have set it to be actively blocking those, and I will look to see what we can do with 113. For the moment, I may turn it off, or we can look to the next iteration of 112, and tune it to pick any changes the spammers make.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:12, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This may be a coincidence, but it's weird enough to atleast show someone. Can you take a quick look at the unblock request for User talk:Nicolas-a (bottom of pg) and compare it to the unblock request for User talk:Badbuu1000 (bottom of pg)? What are the chances that 2 indef blocked users would use the same rationale word for word: "I'm awfully sorry and beg to unblock me please", and not be related? The Nicolas-a account uploads Russian copyvios, while User:Sridhar1000 and his usual socks like BadBuu1000 go for Indian stuff, but it still seems like a possible match. Thx for your time. On using CU on Commons[edit]

Those who know me well enough, and there are a few left, will not be that surprised that I have returned to post this (& it is all I will do). I have always had the greatest of respect for the communities who trusted me with CU with CU rights here and elsewhere so this statement is mostly for them. However it probably should be read by those who are ignorant of the day to day work done on the front line by admins here and on other projects as well as anyone else with an interest in the subject.

Over the years I have had the tools on various projects I have run thousands of CU actions. Maybe 2% of these have been on "real users". There has always been a valid reason for the action. Either an actual request or posting by an experienced trusted person on any admin board or my talk page would have got my attention and if warranted CU would have been run. On Commons I often found I was deleting a file recently uploaded (and deleted) by a different user name. If this had been deleted as a copyright violation or similar I would usually run CU - I have found 100s of accounts where puppets had been created to evade blocks and upload copyrighted files or totally out of scope images.

The other 98% of the checks have been on accounts created to disrupt or abuse projects. These accounts were almost always created on abused IP addresses (few are stupid enough to use their own IPs). In the old days these were folk such as "Willy on wheels", Haggar, Grawp and the like. For the past year or so projects have had a vast number of accounts created by scripts or programs such as Xrumer for spam/disruption. Some of these are used on the day they are created, some are dormant for months. There is no point "warning" such accounts - they are not used by humans, equally simply deleting the spam is pointless as it will be reposted for the same reason. Running CU on these allows the project more globally to be aware of problem IPs and often ranges that are being abused across many projects (Commons and Meta being hub projects are often the source of such accounts). My contact with stewards has allowed these to be reviewed for global blocking to try and keep the flood down. To give some idea of the scale of the problem I just checked Meta's user creation log from yesterday. Of around 100 accounts created there in the previous 24 hours I estimate that somewhere between a third and a half of those accounts are bot created for abuse - Commons figures will be similar.

That others do not use CU like this is of no real interest to me - I was a frontline admin here and elsewhere dealing with the day to day junk that arrives. Few do it and even fewer do it for long periods - I did. I didn't get it right all the time - I am human and I made mistakes but I did try and serve the communities that trusted me to the best of my ability.

There are a few people here who I have enormous respect for - a number have posted above for which thanks. However, while it has always irritated me when people say "Commons is broken" sadly that feels like the way it is to me. Too many people take joy in aggressive arguments (usually quite pointlessly) when there is always enough work to be done. When I look at the fact that I am being indirectly attacked for attempting to keep this community clear of bot attacks by people who are quite ignorant it saddens me. I think it highly unlikely I will ever be back. However I remain grateful to those in the community who trusted me. --Herby talk thyme 18:24, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your efforts to prevent damage trough CUs. --87.153.113.16 18:53, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm grateful also as it.quote admin: your central anti-spam efforts allowed many small wikis admins like me to slack (and sometimes, get some useful stuff done). --Nemo 20:22, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Personal trust has nothing, absolutely nothing!, to do with having problems with the kind of the use of the tools. To critizise this is not to crizizise you. If you feel so - I'm sorry, it's never that, what I wanted to say. On the other hand is That others do not use CU like this is [us ?] of no real interest to me for me a bad argument. --Liesbeth Lasst (talk) 23:08, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So sorry to see you go. You have really been an asset to Commons. Hope all is well offline. Jonathunder (talk) 02:50, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey[edit]

Welcome semi-back and possibly good bye again. It was nice to see you breeze in though. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 14:42, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I echo the above sentiments; you've always been one I've enjoyed working with over the years. --O (висчвын) 01:41, 14 August 2013 (GMT)

Me too... apart from a few emails, you are not much around here anymore. How are you? Any chance of you coming back? Trijnsteltalk 22:32, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to see you; once in a while, at least. JKadavoor Jee 13:27, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bye bye, thanks for your work efforts. --cyrfaw (talk) 08:46, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
