Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Die Karte enthält gravierende Fehler.

Die nördliche grenze des Westerwaldes ist z.B. die Sieg. Das Köln+Koblenz unmittelbar am Rand der Eifel liegt wage ich zu bezweifeln. Allein schon Zülpich (Zülpicher Börde) wäre eine eher grenzwertige Behauptung. Ich halte die Karte für nicht ganz repräsentativ bzw. eher hergestellt zur tourismusförderung. --217.255.135.6 18:21, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Die sachlichen Hinweise sind schon brauchbarer. Aber zunächst einmal: auch deine Kritik enthält Fehler. Zum ersten ist es nicht „meine“ Karte; wie sich aus der längeren Versionshistorie der Datei ergibt, nahm ich an der bestehenden Datei einige Ergänzungen und Verbesserungen vor. Zum zweiten ist deine Kritk im Tenor sehr anmaßend; es steht dir nicht zu, von anderen dies und jenes zu verlangen, beachte also bitte in Zukunft die Höflichkeitsregeln, insbeondere Nr. 6. Zum dritten wird die alte Eifelkarte in keinem Artikel mehr verwendet, sondern die neuere, die du oben anführst und ebenso der Artikel zur Eifel in der deutschen WP, ersetzt dank Wiki-Prinzip die ältere. ich will DIR doch in person nichts. Du hast sicher da eine menge zeit und fleiß investiert. Sie gibt aber in weiten teilen nicht das wieder, was unsere kinder z.b. in der schule lernen bzw, gelernt haben. Das ist sicher nicht "enzyklopädisch"  :-) (schweres wort). Lieber Anonymus, ich hab' den Eindruck, du verstehst Einiges in der WP nicht recht; ich kann nur ein letztes Mal wiederholen: 1. Die kritisierte Karte kann sein, wie sie will, es ist nicht meine, daher bist du hier an der falschen Stelle. 2. Es besteht kein Anlass, etwas an ihr etwas zu ändern, da sie im ANR nicht mehr verwendet wird. 3. Sie kann nicht gelöscht werden, da sie in früheren Artikelversionen verwendet (verlinkt) wurde und diese in WP grundsätzlich zugänglich und infolgedessen diese Links aufzulösen sind; ganz abgesehen davon stellen vermeintliche Qualitätsmängel auch gar keinen Löschgrund dar. Meine Gegenvorschläge lauten: 1. Deine Kritik gehört in die Diskussion zur kritisierten Karte selbst; wenn DU möchtest, bringe sie dort an. 2. In WP kann man auch anonym mitarbeiten, so dass DU SELBST Änderungen an den Dateien vornehmen kannst (die aber andere wiederum jederzeit ändern können). 3. Überdenke noch einmal deinen Tonfall, ich finde ihn weiterhin anmaßend (‚Das ist sicher nicht "enzyklopädisch"‘?); der Ton macht die Musik und in der WP ist durchaus die deutsche Rechtschreibung üblich. es sind 3 versionen dieser karte entstanden. Soweit ok, wenn man diese zumindest aus den jeweiligen categoryien entnommem hat. Es existiert eine 4. version ( leider auch fehlerbehaftet, siehe diese im artikel zur eifel). Bild verbessert, Datei optimiert[edit]

Hello.
Did you read “please help ensure that Commons content can be reused widely — including use in printed media — by uploading photographic images at high resolution” in Commons:File types #Highest resolution before doing this? Or are you familiar with the first paragraph of Commons:Preparing images for upload, perhaps? If you don’t realize basics of digital graphics, then Commons doesn’t want your “improvements”. Hi. Yes I know the basics of digital graphics well, because it's part of my job. And image quality is not (only) a question of data volume! You know? The picture in question is bad illuminated and his file needs unnecessarily long loading time, if someone wants to display the origin. Two reasons form my improvement, because to display the picture is the files most important function! (His first and so far only use is at de:Oettinger_Brauerei.) The new resolution, by the way, is completely sufficient for all usual prints. And if someone decides to need the little higher resolution, but bloated and bad illuminated original file, he finds it furthermore in the history. There isn't any problem to change the data garbage, quite the reverse! And realize: it's an unimportant bear bottle and not, for example, Westminster Abbey (3000x4000 px, 4 MB!) – 15 MB for it are still nonsense! --WinfriedSchneider (talk) 12:03, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, the criticism was justified, the first improvement to bright, but not succeded. As the result I made it better and loaded another image in two versions of data density, the smaller file at last for less loading time when displaying. Bitte keine Originalbilder überschreiben![edit]

Hallo! Ich habe die Änderung bei File:Dülmen, Wiesmann Sports Cars, Wiesmann Spyder Concept -- 2018 -- 9978.jpg zurückgesetzt. Aus meiner Sicht ist das keine Verbesserung (zeigt auch das Differenzbild) zumal ich auf Basis der RAW-Dateien arbeite und Änderungen sich nicht in meinem lokalen Bestand - der Basis - niederschlagen. Entsprechend den Hinweisen bei dem Bild und bei COM:OVERWRITE (DO NOT overwrite … Files that have been awarded a special status like Commons Featured Picture, Commons Quality Image, or similar status on another Wikimedia project.) sollten solche Überschreibungen unterbleiben. Es ist ein Verstoß gegen die Lizenzregeln, denn die Urheberschaft wurde erweitert, aber nicht kenntlich gemacht. Eine Änderung auf dieser Seite wäre allerdings auch ein Lizenzverstoß. Lade veränderte Dateien bitte unter neuem Namen unter Ergänzung deiner Urheberschaft hoch. Bitte unterlasse solche Änderungen in Zukunft. Danke. --XRay 💬 07:32, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ich habe zwar schon an das offizielle Regelwerk erinnert, aber zwei Dinge möchte ich trotzdem zusätzlich hervorheben: Berücksichtigen die Interessen Interessen Interessen des Erstellers und Creative Commons Namensnennung-Share Alike 4.0 International. Bedenke immer, dass Medien aus Wikimedia Commons auch außerhalb der Wikimedia-Welt Verwendung finden und ein Link immer genau zu dem Medium zeigen muss, welches genutzt wurde. --XRay 💬 17:34, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@WinfriedSchneider: OK. Für mich ist das immer höchst ärgerlich. Bild, Autorenangabe und Lizenz bilden eine untrennbare Einheit. Ich als Fotograf habe genau das Bild in genau dieser Fassung unter der genannten Lizenz freigegeben. Entsprechend habe ich das auch als Hinweis bei allen Bildern formuliert. Eigentlich ergibt sich das von selbst aus der Lizenz, dass Bilder nicht verändert werden. Eine vermeintliche Verbesserung ist immer subjektiv. Ich habe schon Ausreden gehört, dass es ja in der Versionshistorie stehen würde. Diese aus der Wikipedia stammende Denkweise zieht aber nicht, denn Wikimedia Commons ist ein Medienarchiv für alle (!) Wikimedia-Projekte und für die weite Verwendung in der weiten Welt. Bilder tauchen in Büchern, Zeitschriften, Ausstellungen, ... aus. Und dann muss der Link, der dort angegeben wird, auch passen. Er muss zu genau dem Bild zeigen, welches Verwendung findet. Deine Änderung mag klein gewesen sein, auch lossless JPEG ist möglich, aber auch "klein" ist relativ. Andere beschneiden die Bilder, empfinden das als Verbesserung und laden sie über meine Originale. Und als Autor bin nach wie vor ich angegeben. Daher lehne ich so etwas grundsätzlich ab. Verbesserungen am Original sind möglich, aber dann bitte erst beim Autor nachfragen. Ich mache so etwas selbst. So ist sichergestellt, dass sich das Bild aus meinem Bestand, welches ich ja weiter nutze, davon profitiert und auch alle, die dieses Bild nutzen. Lizenzgerechte Ableitungen sind immer möglich, dann aber bitte unter einem neuen Namen mit angepasster Urheberschaft. Ich weiß, es gibt ein paar Bilder mit deutlich schlechter Qualität bei Wikimedia Commons. Und es gibt auch etliche Fotograf:innen, die sich nach dem Upload um nichts mehr kümmern. Was meine Person betrifft: Ich fotografiere mit Leidenschaft und stehe zu meinen Bildern - und ich pflege sie auch. Die anderen Fotograf:innen z. B. aus der Commons Photographers User Group verfahren da kaum anders. Vielleicht kannst du meinen Ärger verstehen. Ich versuche, ein Verständnis für uns Fotograf:innen zu bekommen, die sich engagiert um ihre Bilder kümmern und die viel Aufwand in ihre Bilder stecken - und dieses Bild dann unter freier Lizenz bei Wikimedia Commons für die Allgemeinheit spenden. (Ich gehe ja auch nicht mit einem Stift in eine Gemäldeausstellung und "verbessere" dort die Bilder. ;-) ) --XRay 💬 10:49, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@XRay: Dein Erläuterung zum Thema Bilder ist sehr anregend. In meiner langen WP-Erfahrung ist mir dies so noch nicht begegnet, obwohl ich durch beruflichen Hintergrund in der Druckvorstufe gerne schlechte Bilder verbessere. Damit meine ich dann aber wirklich schlechte, farbstichige, kontrastlose und so was, die in der Wikipedia einfach kein gutes Bild abgeben, nicht mal als Miniatur. Die sind dann aber von Amateuren hier hinterlassen worden, die sich nicht weiter darum kümmern, also sicher nicht Deine verantwortliche Haltung als Autor mitbringen. Jedenfalls ist dies mein gewachsener Eindruck. Und jedenfalls nehme ich aus der Diskussion hier mit, künftig genauer darauf zu achten, welche Lizenz für das Bild hinterlassen wurde. In Deinem Fall hier, dem Wiesmann Spyder, geschah das ohne darauf zu achten, sorry, im Eifer des Gefechts eben. Und Danke für den Hinweis, Bilder als Ableitung unter eigenen Namen hochzuladen mit Verweis auf den Ursprung. Das ist durchaus löblich. Bei deinem vorgenannten Bild hast du Oursana als Urheber:in angegeben, dich aber nicht genannt. Ich will ja nichts sagen, aber so ist es ein Verstoß gegen die Lizenzregeln.
